Revolutionary leader Oliver Cromwell was executed on 30th January, 1661 - despite having been dead for more than two years. His body was exhumed from its tomb in Westminster Abbey on the instruction of King Charles II, who sought retribution for those involved in the trial and execution of his father, Charles I. Along with other Regicides, Cromwell's corpse was disinterred and subjected to public abuse. On the anniversary of Charles I's beheading, Cromwell's head was mounted on a spike and stuck on the roof of Westminster Hall - where it remained for thirty years. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly track the illustrious history of Cromwell's head from that date forth; consider whether the crowd in attendance at the ‘execution' really hated their former Lord Protector as much as their jeering suggests; and explain how the intervention of a future Prime Minister prevented Cromwell's relic being put on public display as recently as the 19th Century… Further Reading: • ‘Oliver Cromwell: Hero or Villain?' Open Q&A - From EINs To Trusts: Building A Private Financial Fortress & Winning Arbitration

Send us fan responses! Paperwork beats myth every time. We walk through an end-to-end playbook for operating privately while staying effective in public systems: EIN-first setups, layered holding companies, trusts as beneficiaries, and documented cash flow that builds real business credit. Along the way, you'll hear candid wins, including arbitration results against major carriers for inaccurate credit reporting and the exact framing that turns “bad credit” into provable harm.We break down why treating all courts as tax courts changes your approach, how to get an EIN without a Social Security Number, and why the county recorder can be your strongest ally. The structure matters: multiple holding companies reduce risk, a 508(c)(1)(A) private ministry can serve as beneficiary, and a public-facing 501(c)(3) can make banks more comfortable. Private membership associations help legitimize inter-entity fees and create receipts that support funding and underwriting, while careful recordkeeping turns accounts into assets instead of liabilities.IDs and jurisdiction come up with nuance: tribal IDs, Palau IDs, private titles, and county filings are tools, not shields. We stress responsibility, informed use of affidavits and explanatory statements, and the difference between travel claims and legal compliance. The core rule is simple and repeated: you only control what you create. Build the entities, keep the records, move the cash flow, and use arbitration clauses the right way. It's not about gaming the system; it's about understanding it well enough to stand your ground. If you're ready to replace guesswork with process and hear what actually works from people doing it, this one's for you. In this episode of the Oil Groundup Podcast, host Rory Johnston welcomes Ronald Smith, a consultant with 25 years of experience analyzing the Russian oil and gas sector. The discussion delves into why Russia's industry is far more complex than other OPEC+ members due to its vast refining sector and extensive pipeline networks that crisscross continental Asia. Smith explains the geographic evolution of production, highlighting West Siberia as the current "anchor" while exploring the future potential of Arctic and East Siberian greenfields. Listeners will learn about the immense logistical hurdles of operating in the world's largest swamp and the technological shift toward horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracking in deeper, tighter horizons. The conversation also uncovers how Russia's tax regime and ruble devaluation serve as unique economic buffers, allowing production to remain resilient despite international sanctions and price caps. Finally, Smith provides a forward-looking assessment of Russia's commitment to OPEC+ and the strategic importance of the massive Vostok Oil project in maintaining future global supply.Ronald's Substack can be found HERE

WealthTalk
The Family Wealth Fortress: WealthBuilders' Most Comprehensive Programme Yet

WealthTalk

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2026 41:32

Key Topics Covered: 1. Why the Family Wealth Fortress, Why Now Inheritance tax on pensions from April 2027 is forcing families to rethink legacy planning. “High net worth” is now effectively £1m plus once pensions are included, meaning far more families are exposed. Many people have a patchwork of advice and products that is hard to coordinate, hard to optimise, and hard for executors to manage. 2. From Patchwork Quilt to Fortress Thinking The goal is to make wealth transfer elegant, organised, and resilient for the next generation. Kevin frames this as moving from wealth abundance into legacy, with a clear process rather than “hinting” at legacy planning. WealthBuilders positions itself as the central coordinator, like a “wealth GP”, bringing specialists in when needed. 3. The Seven Integrations (The Fortress Framework) Tax: proactive “event led” planning, especially inheritance tax, not just annual returns. Legal: wills, powers of attorney, protection, and avoiding disputes such as contentious probate. Financial: building wealth is not enough, families need planning for protection and perpetuation too. Structures: holding companies, family investment companies, trusts, share classes, and intergenerational planning. SSAS and pensions: using family pension structures, earmarking, and cascading to reduce future inheritance tax impact. Recurring income: inheritance tax is on capital not income, so understanding income enables smarter gifting. Legacy: involving the next generation early through trusteeship, shareholding, and participation in the family plan. 4. Record Keeping, Gifting, and the Digital Vault Families need clear documentation to avoid confusion, delays, and challenges after death. Kevin highlights using intention and execution records (for example IHT documentation) to reduce HMRC risk. A digital vault brings tax, legal, financial, structures, and gifting records into one accessible place for executors. 5. Who It's For and How to Take the First Step This is application based, limited capacity, and aimed at families typically 55 plus with estates around £1m plus. It is designed to be implemented over 3 to 5 years, still broken down into manageable steps. A practical first move is using the free inheritance tax calculator to understand your current exposure.   Actionable Takeaways: Don't assume your current advice is joined up, check how tax, legal, financial and structures connect. Start planning for inheritance tax now, especially with pensions being included from April 2027. Move from reactive planning to proactive “event led” planning for key life events. Get your documentation organised and accessible, so executors are not left guessing. Involve the next generation earlier, so wealth transfer includes wisdom, not just money. Take the first step by using the IHT calculator and booking a conversation if the fortress approach fits your situation.   Resources & Next Steps: WealthBuilders 'The Family Wealth Fortress' Download our FREE Pensions and Inheritance Tax Guide WealthBuilders Membership: Free access to guides, webinars, and community   Connect with Us: Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and all major platforms.   Next Steps On Your WealthBuilding Journey:   Join the WealthBuilders Facebook Community Schedule a 1:1 call with one of our team Become a member of WealthBuilders If you have been enjoying listening to WealthTalk - Please Leave Us A Review!

On the single-issue side, Batman/Superman: World's Finest #47 wraps up the Absorbicon chaos with the Joker/Luthor fusion, the world briefly losing knowledge, and a lingering "Fusion" mystery locked away in the Fortress of Solitude; DC KO: Green Lantern – Galactic Slam #1 becomes the week's standout as Jeremy Adams brings Kyle Rayner into WAM's multiversal wrestling spectacle, delivers Omega Bam Man's origin, and ties the concept directly into Darkseid and the DC KO stakes; Titans #31 splits focus between Donna Troy and Arsenal battling Grail on Earth and Nightwing/Raven's Gemworld complications as Terra turns opportunistic; Superman Unlimited #9 launches "Die Laughing" with a new, more hands-on Prankster targeting Perry White and Superman leveraging Clark Kent's reporting to bait the killer into exposing himself, while also planting Mxyzptlk-related seeds; Catwoman #83 continues Selina's Europe-set intrigue with Falcone connections and Court of Owls pressure as the run edges toward a more familiar Gotham-facing direction; Nightwing #134 keeps Dick in the Fifth Dimension facing the Zanni while real-world consequences escalate, including damage that reverberates back to Blüdhaven; and Wonder Woman #29 begins a two-part "The Village" detour to Themyscira with striking Jeff Spokes visuals and Strife's arrival setting the hook for what comes next, before both hosts give their rankings with Galactic Slam taking the top spot.

Guest: Royal Hansen, VP of Engineering at Google, former CISO of Alphabet Topics: The "God-Like Designer" Fallacy: You've argued that we need to move away from the "God-like designer" model of security—where we pre-calculate every risk like building a bridge—and towards a biological model. Can you explain why that old engineering mindset is becoming risky in today's cloud and AI environments? Resilience vs. Robustness: In your view, what is the practical difference between a robust system (like a fortress that eventually breaks) and a resilient system (like an immune system)? How does a CISO start shifting their team's focus from creating the former to nurturing the latter? Securing the Unknown: We're entering an era where AI agents will call other agents, creating pathways we never explicitly designed. If we can't predict these interactions, how can we possibly secure them? What does "emergent security" look like in practice? Primitives for Agents: You mentioned the need for new "biological primitives" for these agents—things like time-bound access or inherent throttling. Are these just new names for old concepts like Zero Trust, or is there something different about how we need to apply them to AI? The Compliance Friction: There's a massive tension between this dynamic, probabilistic reality and the static, checklist-based world of many compliance regimes. How do you, as a leader, bridge that gap? How do you convince an auditor or a board that a "probabilistic" approach doesn't just mean "we don't know for sure"?  "Safe" Failures: How can organizations get comfortable with the idea of designing for allowable failure in their subsystems, rather than striving for 100% uptime and security everywhere? How to Build a Business Fortress: Liquidity, Cash Flow, and Exit Readiness with David Barnett   Build a Business Fortress: Why Liquidity Beats Leverage and Most Businesses Never Sell   Most owners assume the big payoff will come when they finally sell the business. The hard truth is that roughly 80 percent of small businesses listed for sale never actually sell as going concerns. The real payoff is in the years of ownership: the cash flow you extract, the wealth you build outside the business, and the resilience you create so you can survive the next punch in the face. In this episode of Profit Answer Man, David Barnett, author of The Business Fortress, joins me to talk about how to make your company stronger, safer, and more valuable long before you ever talk to a buyer.   In This Episode, You'll Learn:  Cash Flow Problems Are Symptoms, Not Causes. Owners often shout "I have a cash flow problem" and immediately reach for more sales or more debt. David reminds us that cash flow pain is usually a symptom of a broken model: mispriced services, hidden payroll costs, or not truly knowing what it costs to deliver your product. A missing 4–5 percent in labor burden or benefits can wipe out half your planned profit before you even notice. Liquidity Is More Powerful Than Leverage. Everyone celebrates "other people's money." David flips the script: leverage depends on someone else's lending decision; liquidity is under your control. Lines of credit can be cut, termed out, or called just when you need them most. A healthy cash reserve inside your business lets you ride out downturns and seize opportunities when competitors stumble. Growth Can Quietly Crush Your Cash. On paper, growth looks amazing. In reality, fast growth often demands a massive "investment in accounts receivable." You hire staff, buy equipment, and deliver work long before you get paid. Without a plan for the cash gap, owners end up borrowing heavily just to float receivables, which weakens the balance sheet and increases risk. The Real Risk: Will Cash Flow Continue After You Leave? Buyers ask two questions: "What is the cash flow?" and "Will this cash flow continue after I become the owner?" The second question determines whether they do the deal at all and what terms they demand. If all the goodwill lives in you as the owner, or in a few concentrated customers, the risk to the buyer skyrockets and the value of the business drops. Most Businesses Never Actually Sell. David shares a sobering statistic: about 80 percent of businesses listed on the big marketplaces never sell as operating companies. Some equipment may get sold off, but the business itself doesn't transfer. That's why he urges owners to build wealth both inside and outside the business, treat the company as a cash-flowing asset, and have a plan B that does not depend on a big exit check.   Key Takeaway: Treat your business like a fortress you're slowly building over time: strengthen cash flow, build liquidity, reduce dependence on debt, and design the company so cash flow continues even after you step away.   Bio: Barnett loves to say that it took him 10 years to un-learn what he was taught in business school.  University had trained him to be a middle-manager in big enterprises, he was totally unprepared for the realities of small business. After a career in advertising sales, Barnett started several businesses including a commercial debt brokerage house.  Helping to finance small and medium sized businesses led to the field of business brokerage.  Over several years, Barnett sold dozens of businesses for others while also managing his own portfolio of income properties and starting his career as a local private investor. Barnett regularly consults with professionals and banks on business and asset values.  Presently he also works with entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs around the world who are buying, selling or trying to improve their businesses.   Links: Blog: www.DavidCBarnett.com LinkedIn: http://ca.linkedin.com/in/davidbarnettmoncton Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DBarnettMoncton/ YouTube: https://www.SmallBusinessAndDealMakingPodcast.com Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/dbarnettmoncton Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dbarnettmoncton/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DBarnettMoncton Email List Signup: https://www.DavidCBarnettList.com   Conclusion: Building a Business Fortress isn't about chasing bigger numbers or hoping for a heroic exit someday. It's about creating a company that produces steady cash flow, protects you when the economy tightens, and gives you real options for the future. As David Barnett reminds us, the real payoff is in the years you own the business—not in a sale that may or may not happen. When you prioritize liquidity, understand your true costs, reduce dependence on debt, and build wealth outside the business, you create a fortress that can withstand storms and deliver lasting freedom. The question isn't whether your business will sell someday—it's whether it's strong enough to support the life you want today.   #ProfitAnswerMan #BusinessFortress #CashFlow #SmallBusinessFinance #Liquidity #ExitPlanning #BusinessSale #Entrepreneurship #BusinessOwner #FinancialFreedom   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available! PREVIEW THE STRATEGIC FORTRESS OF SYRACUSE Colleague Professor James Romm. Romm details the military might of Syracuse under the Dionysius dynasty, specifically describing "the island," a peninsula connected to the mainland by a causeway. Protected by walls and a natural fresh water spring, this zone became an unassailable fortress that allowed the tyrants to withstand sieges. Analogy: Plato visiting Syracuse was like a theoretical physicist visiting an active nuclear reactor during a meltdown. He left the safe, theoretical environment of his Academy to study the dangerous, real-world "laboratory" of high-stakes power and tyranny. 16001

Caomh McGillion briefly stops by to help Cam sum up Bruce Willis' 30 VOD & Limited Release Movies prior to his retirement.   Which initial ones were rather reasonable B-movies/unofficial DIE HARD sequels?   Which ones easily rivaled the most infamous Steven Seagal/Mel Gibson/John Travolta/Sylvester Stallone/Eric Roberts/Mickey Rourke movies of late?   How did the producer of NARC/LONE SURVIVOR/THE IRISHMAN orchestrate such a ponzi scheme with these bottom-of-the-barrel Action flicks?   Were any of the other ensemble comedies & mystery flicks surprisingly well-done despite only having Bruce in a brief part?   All that and a proper farewell to one of cinema's once popular stars!     MOVIES REVIEWED: Set Up, Catch .44, Lay the Favorite, The Cold Light of Day, Fire with Fire, The Prince, Vice (2015), Rock the Kasbah, Extraction (2016), Precious Cargo, Marauders, Once Upon a Time in Venice, First Kill, Acts of Violence, Reprisal, Air Strike, Motherless Brooklyn, 10 Minutes Gone, Trauma Center, Survive the Night, Hard Kill, Breach, Cosmic Sin, Midnight in the Switchgrass, Out of Death, Survive the Game, APEX, Deadlock, Fortress, American Siege, Gasoline Alley, A Day to Die, Fortress: Sniper's Eye, Corrective Measures, Vendetta (2022), White Elephant, Wrong Place, Wire Room, Paradise City & Assassin (2023)             MUSIC USED: "Torn Jeans Medium" by Apple Free-To-Use Music.   "Die Hard 1 & 3 Trailer Music" by John Erik Alexander.   "Cool Rock," "Exhilarate," "Hitman," "Hot Rock," "Delay Rock" and "Rock Hybrid" by Kevin MacLeod. Hello everyone!!We're wrapping up the year in serious fashion, diving once back into Imperialism everywhere, with the 2025 Superman, and bringing our superhero liasion along, André!This was a film really well talked about for being positive, and progressive and... things which it isn't. It's still imperialist and still very much on the US' side when thinking about anything. So come along as we look at this at first, maybe good superhero film, and yet, rather vile film, regardless of its liberal good intentions.Enjoy! And do check out André's text on superhero films and his interview with good friend Jon from Horror Vanguard:https://operamundi.uol.com.br/cultura/filmes-de-super-heroi-e-possivel-escapar-do-cinismo/https://youtu.be/-KFmOxZ1-z4?list=LLIf you can and are interested in early episodes and our bonus content, soon to be plenty more, check out our Patreon!https://www.patreon.com/leftpage Also! In London, located on the north bank of the River Thames, stands a tower that the mere mention of the name inspires feelings of dread and the macabre and that is because this structure's thousand-year-old history is full of imprisonment, torture and execution. Many famous names in history met their final demise at the Tower of London. The Great Tower was not always a prison. It served as a royal residence for a time and is officially known as His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. Control of this piece of property usually signified control of the country. Because so much mystery, intrigue and death is associated with the structure, it is reputed to be quite haunted. Our infamous Lady in White is only one of the many spooks people claim to have seen or felt. Todd Rapp got his career started in equity options at Goldman Sachs in the late 1990's, a wild time in which a bubble inflated and burst and provided critical lessons in both gamma and vega risk in the process. Now the CEO of the Fortress Multi-Manager Group, Todd leans heavily on his derivatives DNA in the areas of sourcing uncorrelated return streams, portfolio construction and both measuring and managing risk. Early training has shaped his long-term view that markets express probability through delta, option curvature, and distribution structure rather than through static price movements. Our conversation connects early risk management lessons to today's landscape, where market concentration echoes 1999, yet correlation conditions differ meaningfully. Todd notes that unlike the prior cycle, today's equity index shows low intra-index correlation, making dispersion, risk sizing, and factor neutrality more fundamental for return generation. We also explore how the multi-manager architecture seeks to harness uncorrelated strategies packaged with capital efficiency and leverage, producing return streams engineered to operate through dispersion. Todd highlights how understanding optionality remains central to managing equity factor shocks, beta instability, and correlation convergence events.Lastly, we touch on the human capital side of building a business. Having interviewed hundreds of risk takers over the years, Todd looks for individuals who have something to prove, suggesting that having experienced adversity is important because, “if you don't have a significant drawdown in your past, it's in your future.”I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Todd Rapp.
