Over in Columbia, EDP renewables is selling equipment earmarked for its alpha and beta wind farms as part of its exit from Columbia. The Portuguese company is auctioning 90 complete Vestas V 1 62, 5 0.6 megawatt units through its Spanish portal. The auction includes nacelles, hubs, powertrains, 450 tower sections and 270 blades. RWE recently conducted a six hour rescue exercise at its North Sea Ost Offshore wind farm in Germany, simulating various emergency scenarios. The company temporarily suspended operations to practice rescuing injured technicians under real conditions, uh, scenarios included evacuating and injured worker from inside a turbine and rescuing a technician [00:02:00] from a service vessel. The exercise was planned in collaboration with the German Association for Maritime Emergency Management and involved a rescue helicopter and paramedics. A new report from Global Energy Think tank. Ember shows renewable energy from wind and solar generated more electricity in the US than coal last year, a first since coal peaked in 2007. Coal generation has fallen to a historic lows of 15% of total usage while wind and solar produced 17% of the nation's electricity. In the middle of the United States, Oklahoma now generates about 41% of, of its electricity from wind and solar outpacing coals since 2016. Now this transition continues despite state legislators considering bills that would restrict the location of new renewable energy projects. Over in the uk the Rampion two offshore wind farm off England's Sussex coast has received government consent to add up to 90 new wind turbines. The expansion project will nearly double the [00:03:00] size of the existing 116 turbine facility. Developers say the enlarged wind farm could power over 1 million homes and reduce carbon emissions by about 1.8 million tons annually. Construction is planned to begin in 2027 with completion expected by 2030.

As a subsidiary of the Nikon Corporation, Nikon Metrology has welcomed the recent comprehensive update to Volume 5.1 of the automotive measurement standards issued by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). The newly updated VDA standards cover a more comprehensive array of measurement applications within the automotive sector, addressing the industry's growing demand for more diverse and sophisticated metrology solutions. As Andreas Fuchs, Application Engineer at Nikon Metrology explains: “We already offer innovative, traceable measurement solutions based on national and international standards for the automotive industry. The new standard defines very precisely the procedures for evaluating the precise technology that we provide. After all, with the APDIS Laser Radar, our portfolio has featured a product for some time now that can also deliver traceable inline measurements as described in VDA Volume 5.1. Incidentally, those who use this technology no longer need a dedicated measuring room for a fixed CMM – enabling them to save a great deal of money, time and space.” The APDIS Laser Radar represents a USP with its proven ability to measure details at a distance without needing handheld probes, targets or surface preparation. This makes it ideal for automating repetitive inspection tasks with high accuracy. The system covers many manufacturing, industrial and research applications, including those that involve hard-to-reach features and are complex, delicate, or labour-intensive. The additional benefits of the APDIS Laser Radar include fast and accurate automated measurements with minimal set-up time for maximum productivity with flexible and portable installation. This allows for the absolute and accurate measurement of parts during production or wherever required, including directly on the production line. The APDIS Laser Radar, in particular, displays its strengths in the automotive industry. For example, the system can measure automotive features with absolute accuracy at high speed with no part preparation, whether inline or offline. With inline measurement, data can be collected in a much larger sample, resulting in a much more extensive data volume for process control. Therefore, it is wise to develop and use smart evaluation methods or systems and, in the process, adapt the reaction speed to the increased data volume. “These days, inline measuring technology tends to measure 100% of the parts, giving a very dense test sample with an extremely short response time and close to production,” says Fuchs. “When the part goes through, a real-time statement regarding the quality of the part is delivered immediately – meaning the response time, as well as statistical and general process control, are far better than before. A measuring room, on the other hand, only provides information about ongoing quality with a delay. In addition, there are no statements about the ongoing process, and production continues.” VDA Volume 5.1 appears to consider the trend that measurements are increasingly being made using traceable inline measuring systems instead of offline in the measuring room, making the implementation of suitability certificates for inline measuring processes in accordance with VDA Volume 5 more critical. VDA Volume 5.1 introduces an eight-stage model for evaluating inline measuring systems throughout their lifecycle. This model generates suitability certificates crucial for system release, ensuring compliance with automotive manufacturing standards. These certificates are significant in procurement as tenders for measuring systems regularly reference VDA volumes, highlighting the importance of standards in guiding industry-wide quality control and measurement practices.

Green hydrogen is a key part of Germany's drive to decarbonize industry and transition to clean energy. To that end, the country is establishing a core network, spanning 10,000 kilometers all across Europe's largest economy. What are challenges faced by the new distribution grid? How many of the old natural-gas pipelines can be repurposed? How much new construction is needed. Germany's biggest gas network operator and the German Association for Gas and Water give us some answers.    Our Guests:   Philipp Ginsberg is Head of Grid and Heating Policy at the DVGW, the German Association for Gas and Water, which currently has around 14,000 members, including 2,000 utility companies. Since its formation more than 150 years ago, it has been the first point of contact for all questions relating to the supply of gas and drinking water in Germany. Niko Bosnjak is Head of Communications & Energy Policy at Open Grid Europe. With around 13,000 kilometers of pipelines, Open Grid Europe is the largest of Germany's 16 long-distance gas network operators.

Last week the leading lights of Europe's electricity industry gathered for the annual Eurelectric Power Summit at the Lagonissi Beach Resort just outside Athens. The conference - under the hashtag this year of #lights on - lasted two days and covered the key issues facing Europe's and the world's power sectors. Two topics in particular stood out: the need to accelerate the build out of transmission, and the pressures and opportunities offered by digitization and AI. At the event, Eurelectric published a brace of reports on these two topics. On the final day of the conference, Michael caught up with Leonhard Birnbaum, Chairman and CEO of German utility and distribution grid operator E.ON and President of Eurelectric, on a sunny and windy terrace just outside the conference centre to discuss all this and more.Leonhard began his professional career at McKinsey in Düsseldorf. After holding various positions, he was Senior Partner for the energy and industrial sector. In 2008, he joined RWE AG and was appointed to the Board of Management the same year. He served as Chief Strategy Officer and as RWE Group's Chief Commercial Officer until 2013, when he was appointed as member of the Board of Management of E.ON SE and took on a variety of responsibilities within the Board. From 2018 until 2021 he was responsible for the innogy integration project, and from 2019 to 2020, he was also Chairman of the Board of Management of innogy SE. In 2021, he was appointed to his current role as CEO of E.ON SE, in which he is responsible for Communications & Political Affairs, Corporate Audit, Strategy, Group and Executive HR, HSE & Sustainability, Legal & Compliance and Nuclear Coordination. Grindel studied mathematics with a minor in business administration at the University of Münster. He joined Ubisoft in 1998 and worked for three years in the marketing and business development department. He then moved to the game development studio Blue Byte after it was acquired by Ubisoft. As a producer, he was responsible for the "The Settlers" brand, and in 2010 he launched the live operation unit at Ubisoft Blue Byte. In 2014, he took on the role of managing director.    Felix Falk has been managing director of game since February 1, 2018. From 2009 to 2016, he was managing director of the Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (USK). As vice chairman of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), he helped develop the global labeling standard for online games and apps during this time. From 2004 to 2009, he headed the office of Monika Griefahn, chair of the Committee for Culture and Media in the German Bundestag. Researchers assume that there are a good 1 million higher organisms and 1 billion species of microbes. The sea is an almost inexhaustible source of natural substances. However, 95% of them are unexplored, in the deep sea even 99%. Marine tec is of great importance. An Online Panel about Global Labour in the Pandemic organized by the Working Group on Labour Struggles of the German Association for Critical Social Research and the Global Labour Journal. The Panel is part of the AkG event series Gesellschaftsforschung in Zeiten sozialer Distanzierung (Social research in times of social distancing). The COVID-19 pandemic is intrinsically linked to the way work is organised in global capitalism. The health risks for workers are considerable, in particular for those who do not have the opportunity to work from the safety of their home. Care workers, be they paid or unpaid, are on the frontline of the efforts to contain the spread of the virus – be it by working in hospitals or nursing homes, looking after sick relatives, or schooling children. The economic fallout from the health crisis and its management hit those hardest who own nothing but their labour power. In the first week of June, the first Conference for Research Software Engineering in Germany (deRSE2019) took place in Potsdam, organized by the German Gesellschaft für Informatik (Fachbereich Softwaretechnik) and the German Association for Research Software Engineers (de-RSE). The conference was addressing research software and the people behind it within the German research landscape and aimed to get those diverse group of people together. Prof. Doris Fischer discovered her passion for China business and economics in the 1980s, a time where this combination in an academic context was not established yet. It used to be a combination of two separate major courses of study but times have changed and today it is an accepted interdisciplinary research field . Although research on the topic has been established, there are still not many interdisciplinary courses of study like the one in Würzburg. In order to understand the economic development, the transmission and growth of the Chinese economy, one has to understand economic concepts on the one hand and cultural, systematical aspects – the rules of the game – on the other hand. The country once known as the workbench of the world is transforming and challenging the Western world in all sectors. There are lots of economic puzzles that come with the fast development and the size of the country, which affords creating multiple layers of understanding. This is what makes it so challenging and interesting. China and its economy is changing at an extremely high pace  and the textbooks – which have been written from scratch – have to be updated at least every two years.   In the second part of this Episode we talk about the Master program for China business and economics, that is offered by Prof. Fischer at the University of Wuerzburg. To summarize, the interdisciplinary program is a combination of economics, language, culture, applied research, and projects. It prepares students to either work for Western or Chinese companies in China and also for firms in Germany that transact with Chinese companies. Even if the students do not end up in one of the two named fields, they are equipped with a profound knowledge and understanding of China business and economics. Definitions of healthy ageing include survival to a specific age, being free of chronic diseases, autonomy in activities of daily living, wellbeing, good quality of life, high social participation, only mild cognitive or functional impairment, and little or no disability. The working group Epidemiology of Ageing of the German Association of Epidemiology organized a workshop in 2012 with the aim to present different indicators used in German studies and to discuss their impact on health for an ageing middle-European population. Workshop presentations focused on prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity, development of healthy life expectancy at the transition to oldest-age, physical activity, assessment of cognitive capability, and functioning and disability in old age. The communication describes the results regarding specific indicators for Germany, and hereby contributes to the further development of a set of indicators for the assessment of healthy ageing.

The new Japanese history textbook by the revisionist Tsukuru-kai is at the center of a debate on neo-nationalism and the growing influence of right-wing intellectuals in Japan. This is part of an agenda that calls into question many assumptions on which post-war Japanese society has been built. As Hidetsugu Yagi, president of Tsukuru-kai until recently, pointed out, from the society's point of view "history textbooks are bad, but civic textbooks used in Japanese middle schools are worse" So far, the "New Civic Textbook" (Atarashii komin kyokasho) for middle schools has received less scholarly attention than the notorious history textbook.This paper will introduce the Civic textbook and its main assumptions about present and future Japanese society. In many ways the textbook tries to explain what makes "a good Japanese citizen" and therefore can serve as a key to understanding revisionist thinking on contemporary Japan. The analysis of texts and illustrations brings to light an image of Japanese society threatened from within and from outside. The paper focuses on how social change is dealt with in the "New Civic Textbook" and what solutions its narrative implies when addressing dramatic demographic challenges, changing family patterns and gender roles.Klaus Vollmer holds an M.A. and a PhD (1993) in Japanese Studies, Hamburg University. Post-doc research fellow Osaka City University, (prohibitions of killing and meat-eating in pre-modern Japan).
