CUPRA LEON EHYBRID 2020 REVIEW "ike the old Golf GTE (and indeed the new one) the Cupra eHybrid uses a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The former makes 148bhp and 184lb ft of torque, the latter 113bhp. The other relevant numbers are six (the number of ratios in the dual-clutch transmission), 12.8 (the capacity, in kilowatt hours, of the lithium-ion battery) and 32 (approximate grams per kilometer of CO2, with UK figures yet to be confirmed). Here are two more: 6.7sec to 62mph, and 140mph flat out." writes evo.co.uk: "Cupra quotes 32 miles of all-electric range – a real-world 20-25 miles is more likely. The pseudo five-cylinder growl in Sport and Cupra modes isn’t too bad and ramps up the drama, and outright pace is brisk enough, but the electric and petrol elements always seem to be fighting each other. The electric motor doesn’t quite have the power on its own for that satisfying EV-only thrust of a full-electric car, but rousing the engine takes several beats longer than you’d hope too." https://www.evo.co.uk/cupra/203183/cupra-leon-ehybrid-2020-review-are-hybrids-and-hot-hatchbacks-still-mutually-exclusive MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS PHEV AVAILABLE IN 2021 "Mitsubishi has announced the redesigned Eclipse Cross, which will be offered in select markets in Asia, Europe and Australia for the first time as a plug-in hybrid with a modified version of the drive system from the Outlander PHEV." according to electrive: "Sales of the new model are scheduled to start in early 2021 in select markets, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. At this point, there are no plans to bring the hybrid version of the vehicle to market in the USA. Mitsubishi does not provide any performance data, but since the Eclipse Cross PHEV basically takes over the drive system from the Outlander PHEV – albeit with modifications to match its own chassis – we at least indicate the performance of the new part-time electric motor." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/15/mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-phev-available-in-2021/ FIAT CHRYSLER WILL INVEST UP TO $1.5 BILLION TO BUILD EVS IN WINDSOR "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will invest between $1.35 billion and $1.5 billion in its Windsor assembly plant in Canada to build electric vehicles as part of a tentative deal with Canadian autoworkers, Unifor National President Jerry Dias said on Thursday." reports Autoblog: "The auto union said FCA would invest in a state-of-the-art vehicle platform that will enable the assembly of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, with at least one new model in 2025. The announcement comes less than a month after Unifor said Ford would invest $1.46 billion in its Oakville and Windsor plants." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/15/fiat-chrysler-canada-electric-vehicle-deal-unifor/ NIO NARROWS GAP WITH TESLA " Nio, viewed as a bellwether of the Chinese electric-vehicle industry, narrowed the gap with US carmaker Tesla, mainland China’s highest selling electric-car marque, over the last three months." according to the South China MOrning Post: "The company, started by William Li Bin in 2014, delivered 3,226 of its ES6 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) in September, a year-on-year increase of 87 per cent, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In August, its sales rose 58 per cent, with the company selling 2,840 ES6s. Tesla, on the other hand, led the sector by quite a distance last month, by a margin of 8,103, having delivered 11,329 of the Model 3 cars built at its Shanghai-based Gigafactory 3. In June, however, the gap between Tesla and Nio was wider" https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3105773/chinese-electric-car-bellwether-marque-nio-narrows-gap-tesla EVS TO RETURN POWER TO GRID WITH ABB INTELLIGENT CHARGING As part of a contract with France’s DREEV, a joint venture between Électricité de France (EDF) and Nuvve, which specializes in intelligent charging for EVs, ABB will supply its brand-new 11 kW bi-directional charging technology, specially designed for V2G. ABB’s solution integrated with DREEV software technology will enable EV drivers to export surplus power back to the grid. With potential to generate up to 20€/EV/month, V2G thereby reduces the total cost of ownership and further boosts the adoption of EVs. Bi-directional chargers also help smooth the flow of uneven generation of electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind. Under the partnership, ABB will supply V2G bi-directional kiosks in France, followed by installations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and Germany. The light and compact 11 kW charger delivers a quick and flexible charge and is fully compatible with current and future EVs. It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA IS PREPARING TO LAUNCH FULL SELF-DRIVING SUBSCRIPTION "Tesla is preparing to launch a new Full Self-Driving monthly subscription based on an update to its mobile app and it is putting a deadline on the newly reintroduced Enhanced Autopilot package." writes electrek: "Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla planned to release such an option “toward the end of the year”. With the FSD package’s price back into focus as Tesla reintroduced its Enhanced Autopilot package yesterday, we see evidence that the subscription launch might be imminent. While Tesla has had codes to prepare for a new subscription model for a while, this update closer to the end of the year could indicate that Tesla is preparing to soon release the new way to access its Full Self-Driving software. When confirming plans to offer a monthly subscription to access the features, Musk made it clear that buying the FSD package will remain the best option financially" https://electrek.co/2020/09/20/tesla-full-self-driving-subscription-deadline-enhanced-autopilot/ BUY THE ONLY 220-MPH RIMAC CONCEPT ONE ON THE MARKET "hat we have here is the only Rimac Concept One coupe on sale right. Yes, that Rimac Concept One, the ultra-rare electric hypercar Richard Hammond famously drove off a cliff in 2017 while filming an episode of The Grand Tour. Only eight were built, seven remain, and this is an incredibly rare chance for someone to acquire one of the fastest electric cars on earth. For $1.6 million—electric speed isn't cheap." writes The Drive: "The Rimac One is all-electric using a 90-kWh battery and four hub-mounted electric motors generating 1,224 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of instant torque. According to Rimac, this kind of performance allows the Concept One to reach zero to 60 in under 2.5 seconds and run silently all the way up to 220 mph. There’s not a lot of information on this car except that it has a little over 100 miles on the clock." https://www.thedrive.com/news/36559/nows-your-chance-to-buy-the-only-220-mph-rimac-concept-one-on-the-market UK POLICE & FIRE SERVICES BUY PEUGEOT ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Peugeot is seeing growing demand from UK Police and Fire services for electrified vehicles. The French company said, 13 per cent of the cars ordered were all-electric with the e-208 being among the bestsellers to serve in British emergency services." says electrive: "The all-new e-208, launched in January this year, accounted for 81 vehicles within the final total of 611 cars to 38 forces. These vehicles delivered have been put to operational use, supporting frontline activity across the UK, according to the Peugeot press information. The other vehicles on order include 308 and 308 SW, Traveller, 3008 SUV and 5008 SUV, Partner, Expert and Boxer vans as well as the all-new 208 and said e-208. Mayn of these are from Peugeot’s electrified line-up on offer in the UK." https://www.electrive.com/2020/09/20/uk-police-fire-services-buy-peugeot-electric-vehicles/ ACCELERATED ELECTRODE DRYING COULD REDUCE BATTERY PRODUCTION COST "The quality of Li-ion battery cells depends on the electrode layers that store the battery’s energy. Both the anode and the cathode material are applied in a thin layer of water-based or solvent-based paste onto a conducting foil made of copper (anode) and aluminum (cathode). Researchers of KIT’s Thin Film Technology (TFT) group developed a coating process that allows electrodes to be produced in less time than with traditional methods." says ChargedEVs: "EPIC focuses on energy-efficient drying technologies and optimal moisture management for the materials used along the process chain, from drying to cell assembly. TFT studies conventional drying processes, high-power radiators and drying management in general." TFT’s Dr. Philip Scharfer: "Higher coating speeds are particularly attractive when drying time can be reduced and the expensive drying line does not have to be extended." TESLA BATTERY DAY COULD INTRODUCE US TO THE WORLD OF DRY ELECTRODE MANUFACTURING. As per TEsmanian: "Currently, batteries use what's called a wet slurry technology to coat the electrode foils for a battery. What they do is they mix a super toxic solvent with some binder, with some carbon and with the active material. And then they run it through a drying line and those drying lines are hundreds of feet long and consume huge amounts of energy" In contrast, a binder, the carbon material, and the active material are mixed up in Maxwell's dry electrode technology, resulting in a dough or bubblegum-like substance which will run through a machine similar to an extruder. One of the benefits of using dry battery technology would be that it decreased the degradation of batteries.". and it could speed up the process by 16x. And from the UK Guardian "Patrick Hummel, an analyst at investment bank UBS, said he was expecting news of a battery containing so-called dry electrodes. These would be produced with a simplified manufacturing process that does not require energy-intensive drying before the electrodes are fitted in batteries. The rewards for developing that technology are potentially enormous for an electric carmarker, removing some of the obstacles to breaking the stranglehold of fossil fuels. Dry electrodes are expected to deliver gains in energy density of as much as 50%, and they could be cheaper to make too. They could also allow Musk to achieve his professed aim of eradicating ethically questionable cobalt from Tesla’s batteries" https://chargedevs.com/newswire/accelerated-electrode-drying-could-reduce-battery-production-cost/ https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-million-mile-battery-maxwell-dry-battery-electrode-technology https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/sep/20/sober-investors-hope-to-get-a-buzz-from-teslas-battery-day CHARGEPOINT REPORTEDLY CLOSER TO GOING PUBLIC "ChargePoint Inc., one of the world's oldest and largest electric vehicle charging networks, is nearing a deal to go public through a reverse merger with Switchback Energy Acquisition Corp, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The deal for ChargePoint could value the company at more than $2 billion (1.54 billion pounds) and be announced as early as next week, the sources said, cautioning that talks could still collapse and terms may still change." says Autoblog: "Switchback Energy is a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) which raised $300 million in an initial public offering in July 2019. A SPAC is a shell company that uses IPO proceeds, together with debt, to acquire another company, typically within two years. Investors are not notified in advance what the SPAC will buy. Nikola went public earlier this year through a SPAC merger while electric carmaker Fisker has agreed to a reverse merger with Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/19/chargepoint-ev-charging-company-nearing-ipo/ GOLF GTE REVIEWED "Packing a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines the 112-horsepower electric motor with a 147 HP 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine, it does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.7 seconds and has a 140 mph (225 km/h) top speed." reports CarScoops: "Compared to its predecessor, the new Golf GTE has a 50% bigger battery. The 13 kWh unit takes five hours to charge at 2.3 kW and 3 hours and 40 minutes at 3.6 kW, and gives the car a zero-emission range of around 37 miles (60 km) with a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h). So, can the new generation Golf GTE be considered the electrified version of the 2020 Golf GTI Mk8? VOLKSWAGEN INTRODUCES GOLF EHYBRID AND GOLF GTE PLUG-IN HYBRIDS Volkswagen is electrifying the eighth generation of the Golf with two new plug-in hybrid versions: the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE. This means that no less than two Golf models are now available as plug-in hybrid models for the first time. The new Golf plug-in hybrid versions feature a 50 percent-higher energy capacity (13 kWh) compared with the plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf Mk7. This allows a wider electric range. When the battery is charged, the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE start electrically and therefore with zero local emissions. The Golf eHybrid covers up to 80 kilometres fully electrically, while the Golf GTE boasts a locally zero emissions range of up to 62 kilometres. The E-MODE also permits all-electric driving on country roads and motorways. CHINESE EV MAKER XPENG LOOKS TO RAISE UP TO $1.11 BILLION IN U.S. IPO "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer XPeng said it hopes to raise up to $1.11 billion in its initial public offering (IPO) in New York, seeking to ride the enthusiasm for EVs even as U.S.-China relations remain strained." says Autobog: "The company said on Friday it intends to sell 85 million shares American depositary share (ADS), each representing two class A ordinary share, priced between $11 and $13 per share. At the top end of the range, XPeng's valuation stood at $9.17 billion. Share prices of EV makers including Tesla and Nio have surged in recent months. Founded in 2014, Guangzhou-based XPeng delivered its first Xpeng G3 vehicle to customers in December 2018 and launched a second model in April this year. The company manufactures cars in two factories in China." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/21/xpeng-ipo-valuation/ NIO TO EXPAND TO EUROPE IN 2021 "The Chinese electric car startup Nio wants to implement its expansion plans faster than originally planned. Nio currently operates exclusively in China – now first vehicles from the manufacturer are to be offered in Europe as early as the second half of 2021." according to electrive: "Company CEO William Li announced that the brand is to be represented in the most important global markets by 2023/2024. In Europe, Nio initially plans to compete in individual countries but has not yet revealed which countries these will be. It is quite possible that Nio could offer its models at significantly favourable prices in Europe. So far the startup offers their ES8, ES6 and EC6 in China." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/24/nio-to-expand-to-europe-in-2021/ TESLA FIGHTS BACK AGAINST OWNERS HACKING THEIR CARS TO UNLOCK PERFORMANCE BOOST "Tesla is starting to fight back against owners who are hacking their cars to unlock a performance boost that the automaker is itself selling as a software update. The most recent example is offering a $2,000 “Acceleration Boost” for the Model 3 Dual Motor. It unlocks roughly 50 hp in the Model 3 powertrain and shortens the 0 to 60 mph acceleration to 3.9 seconds." writes Fred at Electrek: "Earlier this year, we reported on a company called Ingenext that released a device that enabled Tesla owners to unlock the same capacity for half the price. All Model 3 owners have to do is plug a connector to their MCU, and they automatically get the 50 hp boost plus a few other features from Ingenext, like a “Drift mode.” But as it was suspected, Tesla is starting to fight back against the hack. Tesla says that it detected “incompatible vehicle modification,” and that it could result in a “potential risk of damage or shutdown.” The notification apparently stays stuck on the screen like that, but the vehicle remains drivable." Ingenext said they'll have a patch in the next couple of weeks https://electrek.co/2020/08/22/tesla-fights-back-against-owners-hacking-unlock-performance-boost/ PERFORMANCE BOOST UPGRADE COMPANY IS NOW WORKING ON TESLA MODEL 3 SR+ The same company is also working on an upgrade to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, but not for better performance “Here is the list of features that will be available for this module: - rear heated seats control with the web app or by the rear passenger with rear windows switches; - ambient lights; - automatic driver door opening; - automatic frunk and trunk opening with proximity sensors; - drift mode; - battery pack heating; - live data: battery pack state of health, beginning of life pack energy, full nominal pack energy, isolation resistance of the battery, HV battery voltage, and current, LV battery voltage and current, battery, and charger temperature. We are also working on a module for the Model Y.” https://insideevs.com/news/440643/ingenext-upgrade-tesla-model-3-sr/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles HUBJECT & ENEL X STREAMLINE CHARGING PAYMENTS "Hubject has selected Enel X Financial Services, a subsidiary of Enel X, to provide financial services for payments between charging point operators (CPOs) and e-mobility service providers (EMPs) on its Intercharge eRoaming platform." says electrive: "The service, called Intercharge Settlement, will provide an automated, future-proof payment and invoicing solution and will be available in all eurozone countries by the end of this year. The aim of the new service is to reduce B2B process costs and help improve the profitability of all partner companies involved. Hubject says the partnership is also expected to facilitate “eRoaming as a key enabler of the widespread adoption of electric vehicles”." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/24/hubject-enelx-streamline-charging-payments/ FIAT E-DUCATO LAUNCHED "Fiat has confirmed UK pricing and specifications for the E-Ducato, it's pure-electric large van. Starting at £47,675 (exc VAT inc PiVG) the E-Ducato has a range of up to 148 miles on a charge, and comes with a choice of two battery options." accordin gto NExt Green Car: "The 79 kWh E-Ducato has the headline 148 mile range figure, though there's also a 47 kWh model with a range of up to 78 miles on a charge. Those figures rise to 192 and 99 miles respectively for the WLTP City range - that completed within an urban environment. The E-Ducato is Fiat's first entry into the electric vehicle market - a pure-EV Fiat 500e is on its way - and both will charge at up to 50 kW from DC units. AC charging is possible at up to 7 kW on the 47 kWh model and 11 kW on the 79 kWh E-Ducato. The panel van is available in two different heights, and three wheelbase wheelbase sizes. The chassis cab is available in three lengths and four wheelbase sizes." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8971/fiat-educato-launched/ ŠKODA ENYAQ IV NEARLY READY FOR ITS ELECTRIC LAUNCH "On September 1st, the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV will have its first 15 minutes of fame at its world premiere in Prague, the Czech Republic." according to CleanTechnica: " “The cars come with an 11 kW onboard charger and can obtain an 80% recharge in 40 minutes using a 125 kW Level 3 charger. Bringing extra attention to the ENYAQ and letting it have its world premiere before the ID.4 has one gives it more room to shine and stimulate the idea that ŠKODA is also super serious about electrification." CEO Bernhard Maier says: “The ENYAQ iV marks the beginning of a new era for ŠKODA, it is the figurehead of our E-Mobility campaign. With it, we’re making E-Mobility Simply Clever thanks to long ranges and short charging times. At the same time, the ENYAQ iV takes ŠKODA-typical virtues such as superior interior space, a trendsetting design and maximum functionality to a new level. Our first all-electric e-model based on Volkswagen Group’s modular electric car platform will be built at our main plant in Mladá Boleslav, at the heart of ŠKODA. This is an important step towards securing the future of the location and safeguarding jobs in the region.” https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/20/skoda-enyaq-iv-nearly-ready-for-its-electric-launch/ You can listen to all 873 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #742 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK LAUNCH DELAYED UNTIL 2021 "Rivian has confirmed that the launch of its R1T electric pickup truck will be delayed at least slightly." reports InsideEVs: "The reason is COVID-19. Planned for 2020, the new launch schedule calls for first deliveries of the electric truck sometime in 2021. When in 2021 will depend on a lot of factors, including how long the lockdown remains in place." https://insideevs.com/news/408382/rivian-r1t-truck-delay-launch/ MERCEDES-AMG EQS ELECTRIC FASTBACK VS TESLA MODEL S & PORSCHE TAYCAN "For years, Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and BMW have postured about reproducible performance and track times for electric cars." write Green Car Reports today: "Yet neither of them have managed to present a fully electric model that—like the Porsche Taycan—represents the performance side of EVs in anything approaching the fervor shown in the Model 3 Performance. That’s likely to change with a top-performance version of the upcoming Mercedes EQS that might, like the fully electric 7-Series BMW confirmed last month is on the way, boast better performance than internal-combustion models. To compete with the Model S Plaid, it would likely have outputs in the vicinity of 800 hp and 1000 lb-ft, according to reports. The EQS will already face a growing group of rivals that includes the Porsche Taycan, the Lucid Air, and the upcoming Jaguar XJ, plus the Cadillac Celestiq, a flagship fastback for the GM luxury brand. " So how long until we see the Mercedes-Benz EQS AMG? https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127722_mercedes-amg-eqs-electric-fastback-could-challenge-tesla-model-s-plaid-porsche-taycan SKODA CITIGO-E IV WITHDRAWN FROM SALE DUE TO HIGH DEMAND "Skoda’s first electric production car, the Citigo-e iV, has been temporarily removed from sale after all UK examples sold out in less than two months." says Autocar: "Roughly 400 units of the Bratislava-built electric city car were allocated to the UK market and they began arriving in dealerships in late January. By mid-March, all had been sold. The Citigo has now been removed from Skoda’s online configurator. The Citigo-e iV, sibling to the Volkswagen e-Up and Seat Mii Electric, is one of the most affordable mainstream EVs on sale, with a starting price of £16,955. It offers a claimed range of 161 mile." https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/skoda-citigo-e-iv-withdrawn-from-sale-due-to-high-demand WHY THE NEW SUPERB PHEV IS VITAL FOR SKODA "Škoda's has many electrified models on the way, including the Kodiaq iV, Octavia iV and Octavia RS iV petrol plug-in hybrids, with the fully electric Enyaq iV due to join the Citigoe iV. This armada is being led by the company's biggest, most expensive car, the Superb, in 1.4-litre iV form." reports Glenn Brooks at just-auto: "Series production didn't get fully underway until year end, which was then followed by build for right-hand drive markets. UK deliveries commenced at the end of January. As at mid-February, which was the last time that Škoda reported progress, some 2,000 examples had been produced." This sits along with the Golf GTE, the SEAT Leon, the Cupra eHybrid, the Audi A3 TFSIe, the Passat GTE. I would always caution on the DSG gearbox which I'm not a fan of. https://www.just-auto.com/analysis/why-the-new-superb-phev-is-vital-for-skoda_id194309.aspx THIN-FILM SOLAR CAR COVER CAN RECHARGE YOUR EV WHILE IT IS PARKED " Armor, a thin-film solar company located in France. One of its products is called ASCA, which uses semi conductor compounds based on organic polymers printed on flexible films. " says CleanTechnica: "The flexibility means ASCA thin-film solar products can be mounted on curved surfaces, something traditional solar panels cannot do. Recently, the company demonstrated a car cover embedded with ASCA thin-film solar panels. The thin-film solar panels cover an area of 4 square meters — enough to provide supplementary power to the vehicle and increase its range up to 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) a day based on the car being exposed to the sun for 8 hours." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/06/thin-film-solar-car-cover-can-recharge-your-ev-while-it-is-parked/ TESLA BOOSTS MODEL Y PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN FREMONT "Tesla is using the period of the widespread closure of its plant in Fremont, California, due to the Covid 19 pandemic to make several improvements, including increasing production capacity for the Model Y." says electrive: "Tesla also wants to increase the production of the Model Y, which only started in January 2020. Thus, the forced break in production is to be used to set up a new conveyor belt for the Model Y, called Phase 3. Tesla took over the Fremont plant from Toyota a good ten years ago. Since the production of the Model S started in 2012, there have been no significant breaks for rebuilding work. All expansions for the Model X, Model 3 and later the Model Y have been carried out during ongoing operations." https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/07/tesla-is-boosting-model-y-production-capacity-in-fremont/ TESLA GETS IN TROUBLE FOR USING HAL 9000 FOR SENTRY MODE, SWITCHING TO PORTAL TURRET "Tesla apparently got in trouble for using imagery representing HAL 9000 from the movie ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ for Sentry Mode so it is switching to something that now seems inspired by a turret from the video game Portal." according to Electrek: "Now Tesla hacker green, who had access to an upcoming Tesla update in the early access program, reported on Twitter that MGM, who owns the rights to 2001: A Space Odyssey, has issued a copyright claim against Tesla forcing them to stop using the image." https://electrek.co/2020/04/06/tesla-trouble-hal9000-sentry-mode-switches-portal-turret/ TESLA HIKING THE PRICE OF SELF DRIVING "Tesla plans to bump up the price of its "Full Self-Driving" feature on July 1, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Friday." reports a Business Insider story: "The add-on currently costs $7,000, but many of the capabilities it promises are still in development — essentially, buyers are paying for software updates that Tesla will release incrementally. Musk also said in a Friday tweet that he hopes to introduce traffic-light and stop-sign recognition in the US in a few weeks, but Tesla has historically failed to meet the timelines its CEO has publicly set forth." https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-will-hike-price-semi-autonomous-full-self-driving-package-2020-4 TESLA TO ROLL OUT WIFI GARAGE DOOR OPENING FEATURES INDEPENDENT OF HOMELINK "Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla will be utilizing WiFi integration to assist drivers in opening their smart garage doors. Automatic garage door opening is available through Homelink. However, some garage doors are not compatible with Homelink and instead use an internet connection through WiFi to operate." says Joey at Teslarati: "The new WiFi integrated opening system also alleviates the need to carry bulky garage door openers that can be lost or stolen, or even the need to pull out a smartphone to open the garage door." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-wifi-garage-door-opening-no-homelink/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in? Show #711 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER MICHAEL AND LUKE TURRELL Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER GILBERTO ROSADO TESLA MODEL 3 IS DECLARED UK CAR OF THE YEAR Tesla’s Model 3 has been crowned UK Car of the Year 2020, making it back-to-back wins for electric vehicles at the awards following the Jaguar I-PACE’s victory in 2019. After emerging triumphant as Best Executive car when the category winners were announced on 12th February, the Tesla battled it out against eight other new cars for the overall title. Three of these cars were EVs and the popularity of another one of the trio – the Kia e-Niro – ensured the closest-ever winning margin in the history of the UK Car of the Year Awards. The 29-strong panel of judges who deliberated the UK Car of the Year Awards was understandably quick to commend the efforts of Tesla. Top Gear’s Tom Ford said: “Clean, crisp and technological inside, the Model 3 drives and performs like we think EVs should. Makes others in the sector feel stuffy and awkward.” Auto Trader’s Rory Reid added the Tesla was “the most important car in a generation because it sets the standard for what electric cars should be: affordable, aspirational, fun and very cool”. Instead of being restricted to their own category in the Awards, EVs compete directly against internal combustion engined-vehicles. Three of the nine finalists from the nine vehicle segment categories were electric models and the panel gave their approval to the latest developments in technology, with 21 of the 29 votes going to battery-powered vehicles. The Kia e-Niro pushed the Model 3 all the way to finish just one point behind the Tesla, while the third of the EV trio – the Porsche Taycan – finished in joint third space. http://ukcoty.co.uk/uncategorized/tesla-model-3-wins-uk-car-of-the-year-2020/ CITROËN’S TINY, TWO-SEAT AMI EV WILL COSTS $22 A MONTH "After World War II, French automaker Citroën launched cheap and simple cars to gets its home country moving again. Citroën is now applying that same philosophy to electric cars with the launch of a small two-seat EV that drivers can rent for the equivalent of $22 a month." writes DigitalTrends: "The Ami has a top speed of 28 mph, and a 5.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that provides 43 miles of range (as measured on the European testing cycle). A full recharge from the 220-volt home outlets typical in Europe takes 3 hours, according to Citroën. Technically, it’s a “quadricycle,” according to Citroën. That means it can be driven without a license, by people as young as 14 in France and 16 in other European countries, according to the automaker. Citroën will offer the Ami as a long-term rental for an initial payment of 2,644 euros ($2,907 U.S.), and 19.99 euros ($21.98) a month after that. " https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/citron-ami-electric-car-available-for-long-term-rental-in-europe/ MICROLINO BUBBLE CAR-INSPIRED EV REBOOTS AT GENEVA AUTO SHOW "The original Micro Mobility Systems (MMS) Microlino electric vehicle never made it to series production, but the car is already getting a second generation. Set to debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, the Microlino 2.0 will feature a new design, more space, better driving dynamics, and a safer structure. With about 17,000 reservations in hand, MMS is now planning production to begin in 2021." says Autoblog: "As for power and efficiency, the Microlino 2.0 claims to have a "stronger and more efficient e-motor," though no specs were provided. The old model made 15 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque and had two batteries options: an 8-kWh battery provided up to 77 miles of range or a 14.4-kWh battery provided up to 124 miles." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/27/updated-microlino-ev-bubble-car-debuts/ NISSAN LEAF E+ GETS LIMITED ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL "New to the line-up is the Nissan Leaf e+ N-Tec, of which just 1,000 examples will be offered. This trim is priced at £32,795 (including the £3,500 government plug-in car grant) which represents a £3,100 saving on the range-topping Leaf e+ Tekna." writes TheCarExpert: "This comes at the compromise of equipment but retains the larger 62kWh powertrain offered by the Leaf e+, which Nissan claims can deliver up to 239 miles of range between charges. For comparison, the standard 40kWh powertrain delivers a claimed 168 miles. Goodies added for no cost over the standard Leaf includes LED fog flights, semi-autonomous ProPilot features, an electronic parking brake and a metallic blue front splitter." https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/nissan-leaf-e-gets-limited-entry-level-model/ ALL-NEW VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTE PLUG-IN HYBRID UNVEILED The plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf GTE essentially consists of a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the hybrid module with an electric motor and a new lithium-ion battery. Compared with its predecessor, the all-electric range has increased significantly to now around 60 km. Volkswagen’s engineers have achieved the increase in range by improving the Golf’s aerodynamics and managing to increase the energy content of the battery by 50% to 13 kWh. It can be driven at speeds of up to 130 km/h in all-electric mode. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the Golf GTE always starts in all-electric E-MODE. The drive switches to Hybrid mode if the energy capacity of the battery drops below a certain level or if the speed rises above 130 km/h. PRODUCTION LAUNCH OF THE A-CLASS PLUG-IN HYBRID "Mercedes-Benz has started production of the plug-in hybrid versions of the A-Class at its compact car plant in Rastatt. However, Mercedes does not specify when the vehicles will be delivered to customers." reports electrive; "The PHEV versions will be assembled on the same line as the conventional internal combustion models. This will allow Mercedes to better utilize production capacity. Since Mercedes installs a larger battery of 15.6 kWh than in most other compact PHEVs, the drive battery mounted under the rear seat “blocks” the usual path for the exhaust system towards the rear. The exhaust is located centrally under the car floor, the rear silencer was packed into the center tunnel. In addition, the fuel tank was moved into the installation space of the axles. According to Daimler, this means that the A 250 e has “only slight restrictions on the boot volume compared to its non-hybrid sister models”. DC direct current charging reduces the charging time from 10 to 80 per cent to 25 minutes. Assuming a net capacity of 14 kWh, this results in a charging capacity of around 24 kW." ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS IN ENVISION SOLAR INFRASTRUCTURE Electrify America is investing $2 million in solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in rural California that are not tied to the electrical grid. The investment will expand access to sustainable EV charging to drivers in rural areas, including the Central, Coachella, and Imperial Valleys. Electrify America is sourcing the chargers from Envision Solar, a San Diego-based sustainable technology company. The EV ARC 2020 is a transportable, solar-powered electric vehicle-charging infrastructure product. Each standalone station is equipped with a 4.28-kilowatt (kW) sun-tracking solar array, 32kWh of on-board battery storage, and two Electrify America Level 2 EV chargers capable of charging speeds up to 6kW. This combination allows for two customers to charge their vehicles at the same time using 100 percent renewable electricity – regardless of weather or time of day. PANASONIC PULLS OUT OF TESLA SOLAR PLANT IN NEW YORK "Panasonic will exit solar cell production at Tesla's New York plant, the latest sign of strain in a partnership where Panasonic's status as the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker's exclusive battery supplier is ending." writes Autoblog: "Tesla has informed New York that Panasonic's withdrawal "has no bearing on Tesla's current operations", the state said in a statement. Panasonic said in a statement on Wednesday that it would cease production by the end of May and exit the factory by the end of September. Panasonic said it would continue its automotive battery joint venture with Tesla in the U.S. state of Nevada, which just reported its first quarterly profit after years of production problems and delays. Welcome to new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ANDREA JEFFERSON Audi Q5 TFSI "Audi of America is introducing its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of its bestselling SUV, the Audi Q5. The Audi Q5 TFSI e (earlier post) will be joined by the A8 TFSI e and the Audi A7 TFSI e in the coming months." says Green Car Congress: "The Audi Q5 TFSI e is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI engine coupled with an electric motor that sits between the engine and 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission. The lithium-ion battery pack, located under the luggage compartment floor, is made up of 104 prismatic cells and stores 14.1 kWh of energy with a voltage of 381 volts. The climate control system uses a highly efficient heat pump that pools the waste heat from the high-voltage components. The Audi Q5 TFSI e has a range of 20 miles. This mode can be selected for driving scenarios when an engine might not be needed." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/01/20200117-q5e.html Q7 e-tron 3.0 V6 TDI Diesel, but it's quick and smooth. AUDI RS "Audi Sport is embracing electrification, planning a range of plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles wearing S and RS badges." according to CarAdvice.com.au: "Audi Sport isn’t just planning RS-badged battery-electric models. It’s also confirmed it’ll introduce RS-badged plug-in hybrid vehicles and Autocar reports one of these is expected to be the next-generation RS4, not due until after 2022." BMW "Leaked order guides have revealed the starting price of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e, which will launch in the United States in Q1 2020." says CarScoops: "the plug-in hybrid version of the premium compact SUV will start at $49,545, including destination. Its main rivals, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e and Volvo XC60 T8, can be had from $51,645 and $54,945, respectively. The arrival of the X3 xDrive30e will bump the number of available models to four, excluding the top X3 M. The lineup kicks off with the X3 sDrive30i, followed by the X3 xDrive30i, which have MSRPs of $41,950 and $43,950, respectively, while the 382 horsepower X3 M40i will set you back $55,900. The plug-in hybrid X3 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 181 hp and a 107 hp electric motor that’s integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission. With the battery fully charged, the X3 xDrive30e has an all-electric range of almost 20 miles (32 km)." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/01/2020-bmw-x3-xdrive30e-phev-will-undercut-the-competition-by-several-thousand-dollars/ In the UK: "BMW has expanded its already extensive plug-in hybrid line-up with the addition of the X1 xDrive 25e - soon to be followed by an X2 model with the badge." according to Next Green Car: " the X1 will offer a range of up to 35 miles on a single charge. X2 specifications are yet to be confirmed, with its launch due in the summer, but expect very similar figures to the X1. BMW’s drive systems are carried over from other PHEV models, which include Auto eDrive, Max eDrive, and Save Battery. Charging the 10 kWh battery will take a little over three hours on a standard 3 kW home or public charge point. Both the X1 and X2 models will join PHEV options already available in the shape of the 2 Series Active Tourer, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X5, and i8 ranges, plus BMW’s group stable-mate Mini with the Countryman Cooper S E, as well as the all-electric i3." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8827/bmw-launches-x1-phev-with-x2-soon-to-follow/ CITROEN "Citroën announced the debut of its first plug-in model, the Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid at the Brussels Motor Show (January 10-19), which starts electrification of the brand" reports InsideEVs: "The C5 Aircross SUV plug-in hybrid version, already available to order, is Citroën’s first plug-in hybrid model of the Core Model Strategy, which by 2025 will lead to 100% of the range having an electrified version, with a new electrified offer every year." https://insideevs.com/news/391491/citroen-c5-aircross-suv-hybrid/ HYUNDAI "Hyundai and Kia are intensifying their electrification efforts by planning to have 13 hybrids, six plug-in hybrids, 23 EVs and two fuel cell vehicles on sale by the middle of the decade. 2020 will be the year when the most important SUVs from the two brands will be electrified as Hyundai will introduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Santa Fe and the next-generation Tucson. Clarity PHEV’s drive motor produces 181-horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque, drawing power from electricity generated by the gasoline engine and from a 17-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack with a recharge time of just 2.5 hours at 240 volts. JEEP Jeep will introduce plug-in hybrid versions of the Wrangler, Compass, and Renegade. Autoblog says: "The one we’re most interested in is the Wrangler 4xe. We’ve known that a plug-in Wrangler was on its way for a while now, and we’ve even seen detailed spy shots of it. So, now that Jeep has pulled the covers off at the glamorous Consumer Electronics Show, we get to hear all the gritty details, right? Wrong. FCA isn’t talking about the Wrangler 4xe until a later date." Fiat Chrysler said: "Electrification, including the upcoming no-compromise Jeep 4xe vehicles, will modernize the Jeep brand as it strives to become the leader in 'green' eco-friendly premium technology" CNBC specultes: "When initially unveiled last year, Fiat Chrysler said the Compass and Renegade plug-in models would offer about 50 kilometers, or 31 miles, of pure-electric range and a new 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/01/10/jeep-wrangler-ces-plug-in-4xe/ https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/06/fiat-chrysler-showcases-new-hybrid-electric-jeeps-at-ces-this-week.html MERCEDES-BENZ "Mercedes-AMG is readying a plug-in hybrid version of its GT 4-Door, slated for launch this year." repotrs Car Advice: "The next Mercedes-AMG C63 is also expected to swap its V8 and rear-wheel-drive for a plug-in hybrid, four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive, providing a direct rival for the next RS4. https://www.caradvice.com.au/817171/audi-introducing-rs-badged-phevs-and-evs-resurrected-r8-e-tron/ MINI Mini Countryman Plug In Hybrid. 26 miles range, three cylinder engine, prices from £32,000 RENAULT News on the Renault Captur E-Tech plug-in arriving in teh UK from June. Leasing.com: "Renault Captur E-Tech, uses the same 1.6-litre engine which is mated to a plug-in hybrid system with an increased 9.8kWH battery pack and 400v electrical system. It can run at 100% electric for 30 miles with a top speed of 85mph. Renault claims the Captur E-Tech can offer 188mpg and emits 34g/km of CO2. Unique driving modes such as ‘Sport’ allows both the petrol and electric engines to combine to take full advantage of available power. ‘E-Save’ on the other hand limits the use of the electric motor and can save at least 40 percent of battery power by drawing it from the combustion motor. https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/renault-clio-hybrid-and-captur-plug-in-hybrid-to-debut-at-brussels-motor-show/ SEAT "Cupra is hard at work developing a plug-in hybrid version of the next-generation Seat Leon set to premiere on January 28." according to CarScoops: "The new Seat Leon will be based on an updated version of the VW Group’s MQB platform, much like the new VW Golf and Skoda Octavia and sold in a number of petrol and diesel-powered guises. Cupra, the Spanish automaker’s performance car sub-brand will initially launch a plug-in hybrid version with 241 hp. The added grunt should help propel it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in roughly 6.5 seconds and will be good for an all-electric of up to 35 miles (56 km) thanks to the 13 kWh battery pack." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/01/seat-confirms-upcoming-leon-cupra-with-a-241-hp-plug-in-hybrid-powertrain/ SKODA In teh UK: "Škoda’s much-anticipated Superb iV plug-in hybrid is now available to order, priced from £31,970. The brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid, the Superb iV – which will be joined plug-in versions of the fourth-gen Octavia in Q2 2020 – combines a 156hp version of the brand’s 1.4 TSI petrol with a 116hp electric motor, giving a total 218hp and offered in both hatch and estate guise. The result is sub-40g/km CO2 emissions with an electric-only range of up to 35 miles and total range of up to 578 miles." https://fleetworld.co.uk/first-ever-plug-in-hybrid-skoda-opens-for-orders/ Meanwile AutoExpress reports: "The next Skoda Octavia vRS hot hatch will come with petrol, diesel and plug-in performance options. VW Group’s plug-in hybrid powertrain to become a performance variant in its own right. The new Octavia vRS PHEV will use the same 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine as the recently launched Golf GTE. No power figures have been confirmed for the hot hybrid, but Auto Express understands that the new model is being tuned to match the output of the petrol vRS. That model will use the 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor. The car will have a battery of at least 13kWh. that battery will give it the ability to go for about 30 miles on electricity alone" https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/skoda/octavia/108748/new-2020-skoda-octavia-vrs-ready-for-hybrid-power VW Golf GTE - 31 miles range but not currently availble to order in some countries. PAssat GTE - again unavailable due to high demand. Other honourable mentions: Volvo XC90 T8 four-cylinder petrols. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid V6 petrol. Mitsubishi Outlander for 30 miles of range. Hyundai IONIQ PHEV starts at £26,000 but 39 miles of range. Mercedes-Benz C-Class C350 E Saloon and Estate have a 6.2kWh pack. TONY BULLOCK I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have and provide some perspective as an owner of a Niro PHEV since August 2018 - one who fully intends to get a BEV as his next car. So far I've done just over 9,400 miles and the vast majority of that has been on battery. Why I chose the PHEV: I had a 63-plate Toyota diesel that I hated driving for environmental reasons. We needed something bigger for the family to take luggage, guitars, friends etc. around. There wasn't anything in my price range that was suitable. The eNiro would have fitted the bill for practical reasons, but it's still pricey. Toyota salesman tried to sell me a hybrid. One Kia salesman tried to sell me a Sportage diesel to clear stock. The same dealer subsequently let me drive their eNiro which he absolutely raved about! :-) I picked up the PHEV from the Midlands and drove it back to Kent. It only took about a week to get it but it was the very last in the UK, otherwise it was a three month wait. If a suitable BEV for my family's lifestyle had been available and affordable in July 2018 then I'd have definitely got one. I certainly don't regret getting the PHEV, but I wish I could have got the BEV. Show #476 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 19th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and welcome to another Saturday Special interview. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patreon supporters - firstly on Patreon it's just NATHAN. Plus thanks to new Producer PHILLIP STONE and Producer DR FRANK KEARNEY. VOLKSWAGEN BRINGING 48V MHEV TO EIGHT-GENERATION GOLF The eighth-generation of the bestselling Volkswagen Golf bestseller will feature a 48V mild hybrid electric drive system. In 2018, Volkswagen announced at the Vienna The Group is now delivering on its promise and bringing the technology into series production this year with the eighth generation Golf, one of the best-selling vehicles in the world. Initially, the 48V hybrid drive will be available with the EA211 evo family, 1.0 and 1.5l displacement and dual-clutch gearbox (DSG)." reports Green Car Congress: "Compared to current Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV), for example in the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, the MHEV drive equipped with 48V technology offers a reduced range of functions, but is significantly more cost-effective. While the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) charges the battery via the grid with a plug, the MHEV does not have a battery that can be recharged via a plug, but is equipped with a 48V belt starter generator." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/05/201900518-golf48.html TESLA INSURANCE INFO LEAKED InsideEVs says: "Our Twitter friends @TheTeslaShow have uncovered the very first bit of real information on Tesla's planned car insurance program. This leaked bit of code has now vanished, but thanks to the quick work of @TheTeslaShow, we've got the info right here for you. Tesla (well, mainly Elon Musk) seems to think this insurance offering will be a huge addition for the automaker, though others disagree, as the insurance business is indeed a tricky one to conquer. Regardless, it seems Tesla is pushing forward with this and now we have some concrete proof." "Introducing Tesla Insurance. Select Tesla Insurance for low rates and one seamless experience. Match your existing coverage or select a new plan with an instant quote." https://insideevs.com/news/350174/tesla-insurance-info-leak/ CHEVY BOLT EUV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT IN THE WILD "[GM has] said it will build another crossover alongside the Bolt, which is rumored to be called the Bolt EUV (as a trademark dug up by GM Authority could suggest), and is almost certainly what you see in the photos caught by our spy photographer, above." according to Autoblog: "This definitely looks more like a legitimate crossover than the Bolt (which Chevy also, questionably, refers to as a crossover), but beyond its more upright stance, it's hard to tell what this thing actually looks like under that thick cladding and camouflage. We expect it to be larger than the current Bolt, but it's hard to tell by how much until some of the camo comes off. We can see that there's no exhaust, and the video below confirms it runs silently as expected for an electric car. We don't have official word yet, but based on intel and GM's general timeline, we could likely see a production version of the vehicle you see in these spy photos come late next year." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/17/chevy-bolt-euv-electric-crossover-spy-photos/?guccounter=1 BOLT MOBILITY UNVEILS $9,999 ELECTRIC CAR "Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest human, is backing an electric car startup based in Florida called Bolt Mobility. This past week, the company unveiled its first car, the B-Nano, which it says it has been working on in secret for the past two years." reports Clean Technica: "According to AutoBlog, the B-Nano — which resembles the Renault Twizy in size and simplicity — is intended to be used much like the two wheeled vehicles used in bike sharing schemes. Short trips of between 2 and 15 miles are its design envelope. No maximum range or top speed is specified by the company. But the battery — whatever size it is — is engineered to be easily swapped out for fresh battery quickly and easily. Just who would be doing the swapping and where and for how much are questions with no answers at present. What is known is that the base model of the B-Nano will sell for a mere $9,999. Reservations are being accepted now for just $999." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/19/bolt-mobility-unveils-9999-electric-car-designed-for-car-sharing-in-cities/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK David Allen If I must make a decision, then it is imperative hardware is right at the outset. Once the car is in the field, it gets VERY expensive to fix, replace, or upgrade hardware. Software, thanks to OTA updates, can be fixed, and features can be added, but only to the limits of the hardware. Rich Fowler Hardware! Specifically, seats! Software can't fix a terrible seat. My analogy is that if you play cards, the hardware is the deck, and the software is the rule set. If the deck is missing half the cards, you can't play a lot of games you want to play with it, and you have to invent some other game with a different set of rules. That new game may or may not be more fun, but it's not the game you were looking for when you bought the deck in the first place. John Fruhwirth Since you are forcing us to choose between hardware and software as being more important in our EVs, I'm coming down on the side of hardware. Why? because hardware is the necessary basis/foundation for software. Without hardware to run on, software is useless. However, the reverse is not true. Hardware is definitely useful without software as we can compensate for the lack of software with our wet/brain ware. So, while software is nice, hardware is a must. However, the combination of hardware and software is where it's at and gives us the biggest bang for our transportation bucks. Ron KeRENski I think the right answer, for where we are in the EV market evolution, is actually hardware. Assuming a starting point with comparable software capabilities, the right hardware in a car rolling off of the line today means that software improvements over the next 5-10 years can reach backwards to owners. Nothing builds brand loyalty like not being left behind and improving the resale value of my trade-in due to a high demand, used market. Will Adams since you aren’t allowing the correct answer it has to be Software that is more important. Great software can make bad hardware work, but really bad software can make even the best hardware unusable Howard Smith Hardware is the most important part to get right on an EV. Hardware reliability provides value because the car will last longer. EV owners have to pay more upfront for their cars; they need to be durable over the long run. Software is easily updated; hardware is not. David Nye This is a very easy one to answer, no fence sitting necessary. Hardware is king, it must be right from day one. Software finessing and “polishing” can follow later with OTA updates. Tesla is of course the classic example- early release software in Teslas has at times had it’s issues, and of course critics, but it just keeps getting better and better. The Tesla you drive today will only be better in a year’s time. Imagine if you had to keep visiting the service centre for hardware fixes! Rob Crawford If your EV has FSD, then the hardware is more important. Simpley because it's the hardware that allows the car to drive in FSD mode. Without the hardware FSD isn't possible. And the hardware must be strong, rugged dependable to function perfectly, immatating what a driver can do only better. Now... I can answer the same question about the importance of the software. Software also plays an important part when it comes to FSD, without over the air updates, then the FSD will lag, and won't run correctly, as designed. So my answer is both Hardware and Software are important for the safest in functionality of an EV, especially pertaining to FSD. Software is important to the functionality of EVs in general. An ICE car couldn't even function as a self driving car. Tony Goodwin After a lot of thought, on balance hardware - in particular the fitment of sensors and processing power allowing for additional functionality - is much more important than software. Hardware changes post-delivery will likely be both difficult and expensive to fit and always require a dealer visit, whereas software can add capabilities to existing hardware as techniques are refined and "AI" knowledge iterates. It is also possible to do this OTA as well as being carried out at dealerships. Victor Wood Hardware is the most important to get correct. Software can always be updated relatively easily whereas hardware is not something that can be easily and cheaply swapped out. The cost of looking out say an autopilot hardware swap out must be sky high compared to the cost of pushing software over the air. For cars like mine where there is no OTA updates it’s still cheap to do a software update as in effect it’s “only” the time to put the software onto an SD card and to put that in the car that causes costs. The last 2 updates for my Ioniq I did myself after getting the software on an SD card from the dealer. It took 15 minutes. Andrew Beshera Hardware is more important over software because software is cheaper & easier to update. Andrew Jacobs Software is easily more important because you can have the best hardware in the world and bad software will render it useless. If you have great software and poor hardware, the software is going to improve the hardware limitations. Just look at the YouTube videos where people cover cameras to see how well autopilot works. Autopilot mainly uses the front forward stereo cameras. Even with the others blocked it can still work. Software is king. Bill Pollock HARDWARE is the most important thing to get right off the start. Hardware is expensive to upgrade, and often can not be done. I do however think that hardware should be designed to be as swapable as possible. For example, as battery tech improves, we should be able to upgrade with minimal intrusion. BTW-The Tesla Model 3 is not an easy battery to swap. The tech has to basically dismantle the interior of the car to get at fasteners. The S and X batteries were designed for easy replacement. I hope they Y has corrected this Model 3 shortfall. Michael McClure This is a no brainer. Hardware is static; software is not.I drive a 2015 Tesla Model S with AP1 that I picked up used last year. That’s old hardware, but I keep getting OTA updates all the time that make it feel ‘new’. Aaron Patel Hardware. You can't change the number of cells in your battery once it's sitting in your driveway. Autopilot software can be okay today but then gets incrementally better month after month until it's great. I just reached 1 year in my Model 3 and the day after I picked it up I got a software update that added automatic wipers. Cabin overheat protection, Nav on Auto, TeslaCam, Sentry Mode, Atari games, dog mode...... 28,000 miles later, the car keeps getting better! Tuesday 24th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 16th April, shows 19,675 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,673 Model 3’s being built per week. A quick heads up, in the UK the Commercial Vehicle Show starts today for 3 days. The new long range e-NV200 will be on show, with the 40kWh battery which should allow for around 110-120 real world miles of use for the van / people carrier. VW says they can’t keep up with demand for their Plug Ins, the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, so much so they’re closed the order books for now as factories are flat out. And I saw a tweet today from someone in the know that Hyundai IONIQ waiting time in Germany is almost a year! If anyone from Hyundai is listening please contact me and tell me that’s wrong, and that people can get it quicker. And lots was happening on Earth Day last weekend, including Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser welcoming a fleet of 14 new pure EV Protera buses to start service on May 1, carrying 4.8million passengers a year. Plus City Furniture tweeted on Earth Day they had ordered 5 Tesla Semi Trucks, the first furniture retailer in the US to go electric. TESLA BACK IN BUSINESS Elon Musk’s recentl all-staff email confirmed the rumours, both Gigafactory 1 and Fremont were to shut down for a planned 3-5 days to upgrade equipment and systems needed to unlock the next wave of production targets, up to 6,000 Model 3’s per week by the end of June. And it looks like that shutdown is over, because 5,170 new Model 3 VINs have been registered. A reminder that tracks VIN numbers is one of the metrics used by the Bloomberg tracker I mention at the start of the show. However it’s only one way of measuring and, at times, not the most accurate. Previous weeks have seen them register between 3,000 and 4,800 VINs with NHTSA so this is large batch. This could well keep them going for the next 2 weeks, if the tracker figures are correct of 3,000 Model 3s per week. FERRARI’S SILENT FUTURE Two years ago Ferrari said never to an electric car. Bossman Sergio Marchinne is not a fan! Fast forward to today and they’ve been testing a hybrid at their own test track in Maranello. We reported on the video last month which showed, according to the YouTuber, a Ferrari taking off in silence. Bloomberg say: “Next year, Ferrari will start offering the technology in a sports car, its first model that can run entirely on battery power for any significant distance. The hybrid engine will soon be an option on all new models, and from 2020 the carmaker will use it as the sole drivetrain for its first sport-utility vehicle, which Marchionne says will be the fastest SUV on the market.” ABB BRING THE TERRA Maker of charging stations and sponsors of Formula E, everyones favourite Swedish-Swiss tech company ABB is busy this week showing off some new toys. Although with other charging groups such as CHAdeMO, they’re at an industrial technology show in Hannover all this week and attendees are getting a glimpse of their 350kW Terra chargers. The CEO of ABB, Ulrich Spiesshofer said in Hanover: “This high-power fast charger provides electric vehicles with up to seven times more range in the same charging time than with previous models” You may remember, if you’ve listened to previous podcasts, these are the chargers chosen by Electrify America for the 2,000 new chargers in almost 500 locations to be rolled out this year and next. They’ll cater for all options, CCS and CHAdeMo, although the CHAdeMO side will be software limited to 50kW whilst tests are ongoing, and then they’ll be delimited to 100kW. VOLVO TO SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE Volvo said yesterday they want to share as much as possible when it comes to their battery technology, to keep down R&D costs across its brands, which include Japan’s UD Trucks, Scania and Mack Trucks in the US. Battery technology is not only the differentiator for the most part, but the biggest cost of many EVs. Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer at Volvo Group Trucks Technology, told Reuters: ““We’re really striving to reuse a lot when it comes to expensive components, which are expensive when it comes to development and production costs ... not only between the truck brands but also the bus brands and construction equipment. The benefit of the group is that we can get high volumes when we re-use components across the group.” We recently covered the story of Volvo’s first battery powered medium-duty trucks for deliveries and refuse collection. They joined Mitsubishi’s Fuso all electric truck which is already in use in the USA and Europe, and VW aren’t far behind with theirs too thanks to an alliance with Toyota, with the aim of using scale to reduce costs. A GLIMPSE INTO AN ELECTRIC FUTURE London had a remarkable drop in air pollution on Sunday, in fact is was down by 89%. What could cause pollution to plummet like that for such a specific time period? The answer is people who choose to run 26.2 miles on a Sunday morning and for some of them, that’s their idea of a good time! Marathon runners are mad, and I know because I’ve completed the London marathon, but my knees thanks me for moving in Triathlons. King’s College London took air samples during the London Marathon on Sunday when combustion-engined cars, buses and trucks area banned from the centre of the city to make room for runners. It’s the particularly harmful NOx Nitrogen Oxides which fell almost 90%. And it gives us a glimpse into the future of what the most polluted cities will be like when only EVs are being used for personal and public transport, a change which can’t come quick enough. And all thanks to 40,000 runners. Which, incidentally, is the same amount of people who die prematurely from emissions every year in Great Britain. For any cities watching on, maybe those who have announced their own permanent bans on petrol and diesel, the results will show how quickly the air quality can start to improve, and give them the confidence to move forwards with only allowing EVs on the roads. CHINESE BATTERY FIRM REPORTED TO BE SETTING UP ON VW DOORSTEP For anyone who doubts the Chinese are coming to make your cars, just like they make that mini-computer you have next to called a mobile phone, or cell phone, just take a look at the news happening almost daily now. They have big plans for the USA and Europe, and not just with their own brands, but with the parts used to power other makers as well. Chinese battery maker Tianjin Lishen are looking to open a sales office in the land of the luxury European car, Germany, so it can supply them with the batteries needed for all their EVs. Reuters claim: “A source close to Volkswagen said the company is in advanced talks with Tianjin Lishen on lithium-ion battery supply contracts, but agreements have not yet been signed. Any new office would be located near Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen has its headquarters, the source at Tianjin said, declining to give more specific detail.” What does that mean? Well VW want to sell 3million electrified vehicles annually by 2025 and each of their 300 models will be electrified by 2030. As supply chains go, on the numbers VW work with, those deals will indeed be in negotiations. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 23rd March 2018. RIGHT HAND DRIVE MODEL 3s Firstly I can see from the podcast stats there’s a 2:1 chance you’re listening North America. This show has about twice as many listeners in the USA compared to everywhere else. Second by the is the UK, and then it’s Europe. So a note from any Model 3 reservation holders hoping for a right hand drive car – Elon Musk tweeted at 10:22am on Thursday morning in reply to a question. Tom on Twitter said: “What I really want to know is some info on the roadmap for Model 3 in the UK. How long do I have to watch and cry at amazing YouTube reviews?”. Well Elon saw it, from all the thousands of mentions he gets each day, and replied: “Probably mid next year before we are able to make RHD. Wish it could be sooner. Maybe try a Model S, used or new in the meantime? Used is better than a new 3 imo, unless you want a smaller car”. And that’s the problem Elon…you’ve been to the UK, you know everything is smaller here from hotel rooms to parking spaces. American’s come to Europe, book a hotel room, and go “where’s the rest of it?”. A Model S is biiig. However, I agree. I’ve been looking on the approved used Tesla website for a while now and £50,000 buys a great car, with warranty, direct from Tesla. My monthly train ticket from down here by the beach in Poole to London is £800 a month, the same price for finance on a used Tesla Model S. I can’t tell you, as I sit on a crowded train 5 days a week, how much I’d rather be driving a Model S instead. DAIMLER TRUCKS HIT THE ROAD Everyone is talking about the Tesla Semi Truck but Daimler Trucks handed over the first all-electric trucks to customers this week. They are smaller, 7.5tonne trucks with 100km range for urban, last mile use. Trucks destined for the Europe and the USA are made in Portugal. And this model is already being used since last September in New York, Japan and Germany. FASTER FAST CHARGING AT HOME American EVSE maker ClipperCreek just launched the new 64amp EV charger for $969, the cheapest 64amp system around, which can deliver 15.4kW of power. If you want to charge your EV at home with this, whilst it’s a great price, you’ll probably need to beef up your home power installation a bit. They say they’re launching this Level 2 charger because more EVs are on the market which can charge at faster speeds. SEAT ANNOUNCES NEW EV The 4th Gen SEAT Leon will go into production in 2019, and confirmed to be a Plug In Hybrid, which could mean there is hybrid tech in the rather rapid, and very hot, Cupra variant. And actually rather than being badged Seat, could be badged Cupra under it’s own name rather than a sub brand. Chances are they might do what their owner, VW, do with the Golf GTE. It will be on sale in 2020. Also in 2020 will be their first full Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) built on VW’s MEB platform. 311 miles is the range given, so this basically the VW I.D. but in SEAT form. Only 15% of SEAT sales are outside Europe so if you’re listening to this and a bit in the dark as to who they are, they’re the Spanish, slightly less premium and and slightly cheaper bit of VW. MAINSTREAM VIEW OF NISSAN LEAF Here in the UK the Huffington Post has reviewed the new Nissan LEAF. Youtube videos and reviews of the new leaf are now quite common, but let’s see what a mainstream, non-EV focussed publication has to say. Highlights include: “Nissan leaf: it now has a range of 235-miles, can be charged to 80% in just 40mins, and can drive itself even in slow-moving city centres” So just to stop there – 235 miles? You’ll be lucky. Self-driving? I think Nissan would like you to call it driving assist. And as for rapid charging, Nissan PR are doing a good job of addressing complaints from people whose LEAF gets grumpy on a rapid. Let’s continue: “The interior looks and feels about as futuristic as Windows 95, which is a real shame. Considering the industry’s desire to actively move people over to electric cars, this feels like a missed opportunity.” That’s interesting because every review of the every EV which has even slightly different styling, inside or outside, is critical. Look at every review of the i3 and someone is bound to say something about it’s looks. Onwards: “There is half a digital screen behind the wheel which offers a glimmer of technological hope, but is actually quite confusing to navigate. And the screen in the centre console is not great. Car manufacturers who won’t use high-resolution touchscreen displays for their cars are frustrating: it’s not technically difficult, yet so many skimp on the display. The result is something that’s low-resolution and really slow to respond.” Here I do agree. Look at the display even on a cheap £200 tablet and it shames most cars apart from a Tesla. Why are car makers so behind with screen technology? Finally: “The e-Pedal, which turns the accelerator into a brake when you pull your foot back, feels deeply odd to begin with. But you do get used to it, and the premise is that you can do everything with one foot.” MORE BOLTS FOR AUSTIN 20 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s are heading to Texas for the Maven service. You can have a car for $229 per week for unlimited miles, insurance and maintenance. Maven Gig drivers get access to Maven Charging and you can reserve and do everything through the app. Maven Gig is the rideshare platform also used for deliveries. They say: “Maven now offers its first all-electric fleet of cars for use in the gig economy, making it easier for Austinites who want to get the most out of their side hustle. Today 20 Chevrolet Bolt EVs became available for freelance drivers in Austin to earn money on their own schedules. The city’s passion for tech start-ups, combined with its high concentration of college students, makes it the ideal location for Maven Gig. Maven is working with Austin Energy, the Austin Transportation Department, and Rocky Mountain Institute to create infrastructure solutions leading to an all-electric future. Maven will leverage Austin’s Plug-in EVerywhere™ network of EV chargers, including Electric Drive, Austin’s downtown smart mobility showcase complete with a DC Fast Charger and solar kiosk.” ZERO EMISSION MILES MORE IMPORTANT For those of you not familiar with Tony Seba from RethinkX, depending on which twitter comment you read, he’s either a visionary who is more accurate about future transport than anyone else, or a salesman who relies on the oxygen of publicity created by making wild claims. You should read his thoughts and watch him on Youtube, do some critical thinking and make your own mind up. A new article on the RethinkX website says those who are leading climate policy change are getting it wrong by focussing on Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) and it’s the zero emission miles which matter. He says countries and States such as California are all about setting sales targets for vehicles by certain dates, and focussed on the charging infrastructure. The problem, says Tony, is that personal cars aren’t driven enough, with ride sharing like Uber and Lyft using cars 10 times more. Private cars are driven on average 4% of the time. He says those who build the models which policymakers use are basing it all on private ownership. Take an ICE car and turn it into a battery electric car. This is aided in places like America with tax rebates and here in Europe with a direct subsidy. Tony’s whole philosophy is Transport As A Service, where EV’s, autonomous vehicels and on-demand transport come together. His theory is that, if Level 4 autonomous electric vehicles were licenced in 2020, by 2030 95% of miles driven would be driven by them. My take is that we shouldn’t abandon the focus on EV’s but combine both approaches. I think it’s the best way to decarbonize cities and population dense areas. I work in the capital, London, and used to live there. I owned a car and a motorhome both parked on street – don’t laugh. It makes total sense for fewer cars to drive more miles. It eases congestion, is safer, quicker and cheaper. All those EVs can drive themselves back to ‘base’ during quiet times and feed power back to the grid when we’re cooking our dinner. But I also live outside London in a small town, and I come from a country village. The idea of losing personal mobility isn’t so attractive. Being in an area where a car is minutes away is fine, having a car 20 minutes away from driving all the way to your house to take you to the shop for milk and eggs? I’m not bought into that yet even if it’s cheaper. Economics are powerful, but so are habits. Out in the country personal mobility is a way of life very different to a city with a great bus system, mass transit, tube, and Uber. Where I live we’re a long way from every having Uber licenced to operate here. Either way Tony makes you think and I followed with interest his speech which opened the day at the recent rEVolution conference. Please do ready more. MODEL 3 AND SIRI MAKE FRIENDS Tesla’s software engineers have been pulling more than a few long shifts recently. Along with vastly improved Autopilot which, according to all the YouTube reviews cropping up this week, seems to have almost magical abilities. Model 3 owners have something else to cheer. The Model 3 now works with Apple’s Siri. You can ask Siri to check if you locked it, and even where you left it. Although if you don’t know where you left your car, you probably need more help than a virtual assistant. NEW VOLVO ENGINE FOR PHEVs I told you on a previous podcast about Volvo, and in turn parent company Geely, calling time on investing in R&D for new combustion engines. So given their life cycle, the new crop of Volvo engines are the last ones we’ll see, and they’ll probably last to the mid 2020’s. For the first time they’ve made a 3 cylinder engine for their electrified XC40, with the Drive-E powertrain making up 10% of sales. Volvo say: “the new three-cylinder powertrain has been deliberately designed for integration into Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars. A hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Saturday 3rd March 2018. DUAL MOTOR DELIGHT Firstly some news in brief, and this a tweet coming from Ride The Lightning podcasts Ryan McCaffrey, or DMC Ryan on twitter…the first dual motor Tesla Model 3 seen on the road: ”I spotted #8370 in the wild this weekend in San Francisco. It’s red with 19″ Sport wheels, if you’re curious.” GTE BECOMES THREE …but first, where do you stand on Plug In Hybrids? I think they’re the gateway drug of the next 5 years to get people used to driving on electric. They provide the safety net for those who worry that, for the one long trip they do each year, somehow the tabloid newspapers are right and batteries don’t go very far. Others say that if you’re going to plug a car in, just plug in a pure battery electric car. One of the most effective engineering solutions is the way VW’s drivetrain works so well in the Golf GTE and Passat GTE. All electric when you want, up to 80mph, and it seamlessly works with a petrol motor when for either range or power. Well now the third GTE has been spotted and it’s the ever popular crossover SUV size car, of a Tiguan. It’s been spied testing without camouflage and with the GTE badges on so it’s almost ready. Due to be unveiled in April, production starting later this year in Germany with deliveries before the year end. The Tiguan will probably do 0-60 in that 8 second range if it uses the same 10kWh-ish battery and powertrain from the Passat. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/03/vw-tiguan-gte-scooped-plenty-plug-hybrid-badging/ EGOLF SALES RECORDS Meanwhile, in the bit of VW which makes rather larger battery packs, the new eGolf is going down well in Western Europe. According the InsideEVs it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe in January 2018 with 1,864 registered. That’s only a few more than the Zoe and i3 but a win’s a win! The 36kWh battery is nothing to write home about but on recent cold weather test video on YouTube it fared the same as the new LEAF – both of which were beaten by the ridiculously efficient IONIQ with it’s teeny weeny battery. However Renault will point out that the Zoe is production constrained and they could have sold more – well, they should have built more! https://insideevs.com/vw-e-golf-was-1-selling-bev-in-western-europe-in-january/ EVgo RAPID PLANS In North America EVgo is cutting the cost of public charging and they say “drastically simplifying”. Public charging seems to be a bit of a battlefront with a lot activity around chargepoint makers, installers and even the businesses who often foot the costs of having them installed. EVgo is launching a simple Pay As You Go option alongside a $9.99 / month membership, although there’s a caveat to say what you’ll pay depends on where you are. Membership pricing is by the minute and costs $0.15 to $0.21 per minute. As they’re rapid chargers you’re limited to 60 minutes off peak and 45 minutes during daytime. https://www.evgo.com/ NEW MEGA MEGA CHAdeMO Staying with charging and CHAdeMo could be getting even faster. It’s called CHAdeMO 2.0 and increases the theoretical voltage to 1000volts, and 400kW of power. You may have heard about the recent wave of new 150kW chargers due to be installed this year, or even the 350kW CCS chargers VW’s Porsche are installing at every dealership to promote the Mission-E, or even the new rapid charging networks arriving in Europe. It’s the ever-present chicken and egg debate – there aren’t any cars to use the spec yet but when someone like Jaguar launch the I-PACE yesterday with 100kW charging, you see all those internet haters pointing out chargers don’t get that powerful. With almost 20,000 CHAdeMO chargers worldwide, used by the 775,000 cars sold with a compatible plug, it’s great to see investment in future charging needs. https://www.chademo.com/ MERCEDES RELEASE EQC PICS Finally, anything you can do, I can do better. Toady has seen a slew of articles about the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV, the day after the release of the I-PACE got everyone’s attention. It could just be a coincidence, but it’s interesting timing for Merc to release new shots and details of the testing program. I’ll put a link in the podcast description and on the blog at evnewsdaily.com if you want to read “Five questions for Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer EQC”. https://www.motor1.com/news/234658/mercedes-releases-first-image-eqc/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. This morning, I chatted to Mark about the new breed of cars currently hitting the markplace around the world, namely PHEV's or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. I've already reviewed the e-Golf a few months ago, however the GTE takes the electric technology from the e-Golf and combines it with the performance on the Golf GTi. It's quite … Continue reading The Gadget Man – Episode 55 – Volkswagen Golf GTE – Hot hatch performance with zero emissions → The post The Gadget Man – Episode 55 – Volkswagen Golf GTE – Hot hatch performance with zero emissions appeared first on The Gadget Man - Technology News and Reviews.
