Steve and Paul sit down with Cinder Chou (Writer/Director) and Kerry Lacy (actor) about their feature film Artist Unknown.Cinder Chou is a Taiwanese American writer, director, and producer originally from the oft-maligned state of New Jersey and currently resides in Brooklyn. An early love for comic books turned into a passion for visual storytelling. Her work explores themes of otherness through a comedic and surreal style. Cinder's early career as a production coordinator (The Big Sick, Jack Ryan, Red Oaks) gave her the professional know-how to launch her own films. Her work has screened at many festivals in the U.S. Artist Unknown is her debut feature film and has won numerous awards, including the Jury Award at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, Best Feature at the Broad Humor Film Festival, and Best Narrative Feature at the Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image. Kerry Lacy was raised in Malibu, California, by two professional actors and fell in love with acting at a young age. Her childhood was spent in theaters and television studios, and dinner table conversations included lessons on comedic timing and notes on dialects and accents. Kerry studied Tang Soo Do for twelve years, earning her third-degree black belt and working as an instructor before moving to New York City, where she studied acting at NYU's Tisch. She is a graduate of The New School, where she studied film, fine arts, and Spanish. In addition to acting, she is also an artist and DJ based in New York City. Artist Unknown is Kerry's first leading role in a feature and she has been nominated for the Iris Prize Best Female Performance and won Outstanding Performance in a Feature Film at Art of Brooklyn Film Festival.Cinder's Website: https://www.cinderama.com/Cinder's IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3364818/Cinder's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cinderblockade/Kerry's IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7466039/?ref_=tt_rv_t0 Kerry's Website: https://www.kerrylacy.com/ Kerry's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kerry_lacy/Kerry's short film Viola: https://vimeo.com/225143857 Artist Unknown IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt24329424/reference/ Artist Unknown Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artistunknownfilm/ Artist Unknown Trailer: https://vimeo.com/843981392Do you listen to our show as an audio podcast? Justin Joseph Hall's work has been acquired by major television networks such as HBO and he's worked as a lead creative on projects that received awards at The Emmys, TriBeCa Film Festival, Brooklyn Film Festival, and more. He is Director and Founder of Fourwind Films. Dorie Hall hosted the podcast which was held as a private screening in Minnesota. For his short, Justin brought a never publicly screened version of Yeon-Gi, an experimental Buddhist themed movie. This version was created in 32x9 aspect ratio, and includes a full reflections visible on screen. The emotional short created a lot to talk about in our discussion. The feature Justin chose to screen is the famous location documentary, Samsara. During the screening Fourwind chefs served a mouthwatering combination: potstickers, burgers, fries, and a cola. Through the visuals of nature and human altered locations, Samsara shows nature on land nearly void of life until we encounter various locations of cities and former settlements. It's an emotional journey around the earth with seemingly no connection except our location on the earth and what the montage movie weaves together through the beautiful images.

Geri is joined by Dan Perlman—co-creator and co-star of FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS—to talk about the show's journey from a short to a network series, how the real Dan and Kevin compare to their onscreen characters, and the importance of hearing judgment-free feedback. Dan Perlman is a writer, stand-up comedian, and director. As a comedian, he has been featured on Comedy Central and was named one of the New Faces at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. He wrote and directed the 2020 short film CRAMMING, which won the Audience Award at the 2020 Brooklyn Film Festival and First Prize at the 2020 Rhode Island International Film Festival. What do an academy award winning South Korean drama and a 90s Ice-T action thriller have in common? That's the question we address this month with the hosts of the Brothers from Another Planet podcast Lemar McLean, Tarik Davis, and Don P. Hooper. You read that right. This month we have not one, not two, but three guests! This month we address how both Ernest Dickerson's Surviving the Game and Bong Joon Ho's Parasite are stories of how for those without money, capitalism may truly be The Most Dangerous Game, one rigged to be unwinnable. On the latest Too Opinionated, Actor/Comedian Michael Judson Berry drops by. Michael Judson Berry recently completed his first feature film. ‘Milkwater. The film can be seen at film festivals such as Atlanta Film Festival, Brooklyn Film Festival, and Indie Street Virtual Film Festival. ‘Milkwater’ recently won “Best Screenplay” at Brooklyn film festival. During quarantine, Michael decided to put his comedic acting skills on TikTok, in order to bring some happiness into the world. His impressions of the Schitt’s Creek character, Moira Rose, have gone viral throughout social media. Michael hilariously created his show, “QuaranTeaTime with Moira Rose” on TikTok which has millions of views and followers to date. He writes and performs skits of Moira Rose, in many different outfits, wigs, and in any situation imaginable. Not only does he do impressions of Moira Rose, but he also includes cameos of the entire cast throughout his skits. Emmy Award winning actress, Catherine O’Hara, has acknowledged and praised Michael for his impression of her Schitt’s Creek character Moira Rose. See below for her full quote! “Yeah. Somebody sent me a clip of [Berry] on Instagram. And he does Moira in different situations. He did Moira tasting a beer for the first time. He’s really good at it. He’s really good. I mean, it’s a hard accent to imitate only, and I didn’t mean it to be, but I think it’s really hard to imitate because it ridiculously inconsistent. And I think when most people try to do it, they try to be consistent. And that makes it not sound like Moira to me. But he’s really got it down. And he writes funny dialogue for himself too. He’s really good.” – Catherine O’hara Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

An exciting #BTLRadioShow this week as we welcome back writer/director LISE RAVEN to talk about her wonderful film SNAELAND, plus our prerecorded exclusive interview with creator/writer/showrunner MARK BOMBACK talking about the riveting mini-series on Apple TV – DEFENDING JACOB. First up is our prerecorded exclusive interview with MARK BOMBACK, the creator and writer of the acclaimed hit mini-series, DEFENDING JACOB! Now before you take a listen, be warned – SPOILERS! Mark and I discuss all aspects of the show, including spoilers for those who haven't yet seen it, and because of that we purposely decided together to hold this interview until after the series finale aired this past weekend. Listen as we talk about everything from adapting William Landay's novel and some key changes to the story to Mark tackling a series versus a feature film to casting (and potential Emmy noms for Jaeden Martell and Cherry Jones) to the wearing of a very wide-brimmed production hat to deviating from the novel with some truly surprising results. This is an absolute "Must See"! Catch it now on Apple TV at https://apple.co/_DefendingJacob. And then a big welcome back to LISE RAVEN and SNAELAND. Lise joined us last August as SNAELAND was just coming onto the festival circuit and we knew then it was going to be making a big splash. Making the rounds since then, SNAELAND is currently screening in the Brooklyn Film Festival which is being done virtually – and it's FREE! You can watch SNAELAND and 147 other terrific films 24/7 just by logging into the festival site! Take a listen as Lise talks about how this virtual film festival concept is working for her as a creator and filmmaker, plus, of great interest to filmmakers will be Lise's thoughts on the viability and feasibility of making a film with sanitation and social distancing during life in the time of Covid. Interesting is that for indie filmmakers with smaller crews, Lise thinks any new protocols put into place for production will be not that difficult to implement and execute. Of course, important to Lise is the filmmaking carbon footprint and we talk again about SNAELAND being shot in Iceland and done purposefully in order to minimize its carbon footprint, but also how minimizing the carbon footprint plays into potential new production protocols for social distancing and sanitizing. But particularly timely and topical is our discussion on the issue of journalism and an individual's right to tell their own story. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Friends, That Thing You Do, Sahara, Saving Silverman, Dallas Buyers Club, Suburbia...) is so fun onscreen that he's kinda the best thing about every movie he's in. Or at least every scene. Last spring, Steve was in town for the Brooklyn Film Festival, where his short film, I'm No Holiday, written and directed by his friend and fellow actor Rick Gomez, was screening. So I met him in Williamsburg. We set up the voice recorder. And later, a camera. (You can see him and me do a funny video with random questions at YouTube.com/reallyfamous.) Here's the result. On this edition of Parallax Views, what is the line between reality and fantasy? Filmmaker Julian Shaw’s debut features, Use Me, starring previous Parallax Views guest and noted cyber-dominatrix, or, as she refers to herself, “humiliatrix extraordinaire”, Ceara Lynch, asks that question and others. Set for a November 26th Video-On-Demand release after a successful showing at the Brooklyn Film Festival, Use Me has been described as blurring the lines between documentary and thriller leading some to refer to it as a “post-truth” movie apropos to our current cultural moment. We begin the conversation by delving into how Use Me came together and the social media funding that made it possible. From there we discuss how the movie went from a documentary to a docufiction thriller. Julian and I get into how he inserted himself into the movie as a character. Ceara details her first experience acting in a motion picture and how it differs from the work she does as an online dominatrix. Additionally, Ceara talks a little bit about her experience in the Joe Rogan show. A great portion of the conversations deals with themes of reality vs fantasy, the nature of sexuality and taboos, and the "post-truth" nature of Use Me. And finally, we talk a little bit about the influence of erotic thriller on Julian's vision for the movie and how Ceara's friends have reacted to the feature. M.R. Potato Head Painting #23 Mike Rader is a mixed media artist working in film, animation, painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Often mixing all of these elements into one work, he creates a creative playpen to flesh out an area of interest. Mike chooses his mediums by need rather than passion by asking the question of which medium will best articulate his current creative curiosity. Mike's work often reaches back into the past to create a dialogue with memories, while bringing influences along the way and reinterpreting them into the present. Past works include works which used the following as catalysts: Charlie Chaplin, Ultraman, and Godzilla. Mike is currently working on a film influenced by the relationship of the Three Stooges' personalities and how those different aspects combined and individually relate to the creative process. His works have won the Vanguard Award for Best Experimental Film (Art of Brooklyn Film Festival), Best Art Direction (Manhattan Film Festival) and the Merit Award (Lucerne Film Festival). Mike Rader’s works have been shown in museums and galleries internationally including The Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Hefei Museum of Modern Art in China. Rader has recently installed a permanent public sculpture in Newark, New Jersey and has just completed an artist residency in Tao Hua Tan, China. Mike Rader lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. In Episode 7 of the second season of the Urban Astronomer Podcast, I chat with Dr Jarita Holbrook of the University of the Western Cape about her interest in cultural astronomy. This was one of the longer and more interesting interviews of my career, and our conversation continued for some time after the microphones were turned off! Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't as good as I'd hoped. There's a terrible echo on my voice which comes and goes as the recording plays. I've done my best to clean it up, but it was just a bad recording and there's only so much I can do! Still, we're all clearly audible and I believe the content is good enough to justify publishing. Dr Jarita Holbrook 1:18 Dr Holbrook is a professor of physics at the University of the Western Cape. She has a special interest in cultural astronomy. She is an expert on African Indigenous Astronomy and the principal investigator of the Astronomy & Society group at UWC. Her intellectual interest in African cultural astronomy has resulted in academic positions in applied anthropology and women and gender studies before her returning to physics. She's also a documentary film maker, whose 2017 film "Black Suns: An Astrophysics Adventure" won the Jury Prize at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival. Announcements 37:30 Last weekend I presented a talk at ScopeX on Orbital Mechanics. I used Kerbal Space Program to demonstrate some of the more unintuitive aspects of maneuvering through space. It went pretty well, although I ran out of time and had to cut myself short! I was really excited to meet people who do actually listen to the show. One of them, Heystek Grobler, is a researcher at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomical Observatory. The radio telescope from this observatory is less than a half hour's drive from where I live, and I've always wanted to pay them a visit and record an interview for this show. Somehow that never happened, but hopefully Heystek will agree to chat to us in Season Three, and tell us a little about the history of the observatory, and what sort of work he does there. I'm trying out a new app which creates communities around podcasts. It's called Flick, and is driven through an app on your phone or tablet. I've created a group especially for the Urban Astronomer Podcast. If you'd like to try it out then you can tap the link on your mobile device. They've promised all sorts of interesting functionality in future versions of the app. I think it has a lot of potential. But like anything online community, it can only work if people actually join in and participate. I'm there most days, so if you have questions and would like to chat in a format that's a little more intimate than Twitter, or more immediate than email, why not give it a try? Our key film this week is the "Sami Blood," a powerful historical drama about a young girl of the Sami indigenous people of Scandinavia who experiences racism in 1930's Sweden and tries to assimilate into the mainstream culture. With terrific performances and tough, direct look at the bigoted people & beliefs of the time, this is a compelling drama about Sweden's buried history and the harsh truths about facing adversity and the struggle to embrace or repress your true identity. Now Playing in New York, and coming to Los Angeles in a few weeks. (42:45) Our interview this week is with director Jamie Greenberg about his indie sci-fi comedy "Future 38" about a man from 1938 who travels to the distant future of 2017. We talk with Greenberg about making a science-fiction film on a tiny budget, hiring Neil deGrasse Tyson for a cameo, and more. The film won the Audience Award at this year's Slamdance Film Festival, and the Grand Jury Prize at the Gasparilla Film Festival/ See it in New York next week at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival! Both women believe their life is their art and art is a sacred ritual. Theses goddesses know a thing about honoring the human experience. Both having backgrounds in gonzo journalism, Alexandra and Sabrina both understand and recognize the importance of integrity and authenticity when it comes to sharing their art with the world. These women honor the various facets we experience along the way and do their best to live from a space of non-judgement by recognizing God in all things and all people. Alexandra believes that while there is a rise of feminine leadership, it's important for us to honor balance in all areas of our lives; our masculine + feminine energy, our shadow + light, and honoring boundaries. The world needs our medicine and we shouldn't be ashamed of our past and how we got here. We had to go through what we went through in order to help those we come across on our journey. This is about embracing all of our imperfections and living of a place of nonjudgement... to ourselves. It's a new year, so why not start on the right foot?
