We are delighted to have Darcy Luoma joining us today! Darcy is the author of the book Thoughtfully Fit. She has spent many years as a coach, training teams and organizations to work better and achieve thoughtful fitness in all their professional endeavors. Today's discussion is based on Darcy's extensive research, coupled with her practical experience. She joins us to shed light on the principles and strategies that form the foundation of becoming thoughtfully fit within a business setting. Bio: Darcy Luoma, CPCC, CSP, MCC, BCC, ORSCC, MSOD is the CEO of Darcy Luoma Coaching & Consulting, a company that specializes in creating high-performing people and teams. She's a sought-after coach and consultant who has worked in forty-eight industries, with more than five hundred organizations, impacting tens of thousands of leaders and employees. Darcy is the author of Thoughtfully Fit: Your Training Plan for Life & Business Success, published by Harper Horizon. Darcy has been coaching since 2004. She is one of America's most highly credentialed coaches, having earned the prestigious Master Certified Coach certification from the International Coach Federation, a distinction held by less than 4% of coaches in the world. In 2012, the University of Wisconsin–Madison sought out Darcy to design its rigorous nine-month Certified Professional Coach training program. She has served variously as the program's director, lead instructor, and director of training and quality assurance since its inception. Before Darcy founded her business in 2013, she served as the director of U.S. Senator Herb Kohl's office for twelve years, did national advance work for the White House, worked for two presidential campaigns, and served as a trusted senior advisor to a governor. Darcy has a Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University. She received the distinguished Certified Speaking Professional™ award from the National Speakers Association, the largest speaker association in the world. She has spoken at more than five hundred events, in front of audiences ranging from five to five thousand. For the last twenty-five years, she has been an avid triathlete and Ironman. She uses her grit and determination in both her athletic and professional endeavors. Along with her favorite job being a mom of two energetic teenage daughters, Darcy enjoys adventure travel, yin yoga, kickboxing, spicy chai lattes, and afternoon naps. Darcy's Story Darcy's professional path initially led her into government and politics, working for a U.S. Senator for over a decade. However, in 2012, the senator she worked for retired without seeking to be re-elected. Then, a pivotal question from her coach changed her life and encouraged her to envision a future without regrets, and Darcy made a bold leap into entrepreneurship. With the support of her then-husband, who took on the role of a full-time stay-at-home dad, she launched her own business in early 2013, defying the odds of small business failure. Then, in March 2016, her life took an unexpected turn when her husband was arrested for a serious crime. Darcy found herself navigating a tumultuous legal system, undergoing a divorce, and suddenly becoming a single mother with sole custody. Amidst all the chaos, she embarked on a journey of healing and recovery, later writing a book about her experiences. She subsequently learned that everyone has traumatic experiences and has challenges and hurdles to overcome in life. Overcoming Challenges with the Thoughtfully Fit Model After Darcy's husband was arrested, she had to test her concept of being thoughtfully fit. She emphasizes the importance of pausing, thinking, and then acting when faced with challenges and encourages people to have faith that things will be okay, even when it seems impossible. She highlights the significance of training and practices to develop thoughtfully fit responses and actions when confronted with adversity. A Practical Technique to Help with Pausing Darcy believes that it is essential to practice Thoughtfully Fit skills to be able to respond effectively to challenges. However, it is often hard to pause, especially when we witness an injustice or feel conflicted about our values. Darcy explains that everyone has different default responses, like pausing, thinking, or acting when facing challenges. She points out that our strengths can become weaknesses when taken to the extreme. She shares a practical technique called the Pause Pinch for those who struggle with pausing. It involves squeezing a reflexology point to reduce tension and calm the nerves. Navigating Conflict in Teams Most successful teams have healthy conflicts, so it is essential to create a psychologically safe environment where teams can navigate their conflicts, disagree with one another, and voice their opinions respectfully. Darcy highlights the significance of articulating and planning for a psychologically safe culture within a team. Encouraging open dialogue, respecting differing perspectives, and addressing the aftermath of decisions contribute to building a harmonious and productive team culture. Healthy Leadership A team leader must consider the opinions of team members, make decisions, and ask what is required for team members to support those decisions. Darcy emphasizes the importance of addressing concerns immediately to prevent post-meeting discussions and triangulation. She explains that leaders should lead, follow, or get out of the way when responding to situations and team dynamics. Handling Toxic Team Members Darcy stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy team environment and preventing the spread of toxic behavior. Managing toxic team members who resist change or cooperation despite coaching and conversations can be challenging. If all attempts to address their toxicity have failed, the best action is to part ways with the toxic individual because allowing their behavior to persist could negatively impact the morale and culture of the rest of the team. Maintaining Work-Life Balance and Prioritizing Self-Care Darcy maintains her sanity and a work-life balance as a business owner and mother by setting boundaries, minimizing extensive travel, and prioritizing her workouts. She explains that her commitment to regular exercise contributes to her overall well-being. She discovered the strategy of delegating tasks and recognizing her unique abilities to improve her work-life balance and productivity, allowing her to focus on things that only she can do as the CEO and Founder of her business. Join me this time as I chat to ‘recovering people pleaser' Natalie Lue - author of The Joy of Saying No, and founder of Baggage Reclaim, one of the longest-running self-help blogs in the world. Most of us (as with our own parents) will have been raised during The Age of Obedience - socialized (especially if we identify as women) to be good and compliant - little wonder then that so many of us exhibit people-pleasing behaviours. Perhaps it hasn't been a huge issue for us before, but perimenopause impacts on our ability to ‘multitask' in the way we might have managed before now and for many of us holding up our people-pleasing tendencies can become exhausting, even debilitating. Natalie talks us through the five different styles of people-pleasing: gooding, efforting, avoiding, saving, and suffering - how these tendencies might have arisen in the first place, and helps us to identify which style we most identify with. The chapters that focus on the five styles also highlight ‘things to watch out for' and some ‘quick shifts' to help the reader start changing their behaviours. The later parts of the book provide a framework for instituting healthier boundaries and troubleshooting when we might get pushback from others or indeed from ourselves! Natalie also suggests invoking ‘the power of the pause', and explains the difference between a ‘hard no' and a ‘soft no' - and when we might want to use each of them. Last of all we discuss why saying ‘No' to some things opens up space for us to say ‘Yes' to the things we truly value and find joyful. I'll leave you with this little nugget of wisdom from the book: “Every time you do something from a place of guilt, fear, or obligation, it always leads to resentment. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon.” The Joy of Saying No is out now, published by Harper Horizon, and you can find Natalie at www.baggagereclaim.com and https://www.instagram.com/natlue You can also find us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ and you can listen to past episodes at www.middlingalong.com It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us to share the love and help others find the podcast too! Julie Bennett has been married for 22 years to the love of her life. She is a mother of four really fun and inspiring kiddos. At the age of 19 she and her husband jumped into pastoral ministry and had no idea what they were doing, but learned along the way. They've been a part of church splits, church plants, church growth and the ups and downs of marriage. They've learned that people are messy and beautiful at the same time, and that choosing family along the way is always worth it. In 2018 they took a huge leap of faith and left the familiar in Norman, Oklahoma and moved to Los Angeles where she ended up going through two battles of breast cancer in three years. She is now currently in remission and living their dream in Malibu, California. Her husband is pastoring Vintage Church Malibu and they are developing media content that brings people together to experience the power of family. Their docu-series, Finding Family will be released sometime in 2023 along with their first book with our publisher Harper Horizon. For more information, go to www.marcyllecombs.com

Times, Chicago Tribune, Billboard, Playboy, and many more, as well as the host of the podcast “My Turning Point” and the Amazon Prime/Hulu streaming series “Riffing With”, Baltin has interviewed a who's who of music luminaries. Among his favorite interviews are Alanis Morissette, Slash, Stevie Wonder, Dave Grohl, ASAP Rocky, B. B. King, John Mellencamp, Aretha Franklin, Adele, and a list of artists in the thousands.Purchase a copy of "Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives" through Harper Horizon: www.harpercollinsfocus.com/9780785290520/anthems-we-loveListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4U5LNflTjF58fd01aWWLyY?si=8286c91ed8bf4ebaFollow "Anthems We Love" on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anthemsweloveFollow Steve Baltin on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SBaltinThe Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcastSupport Your Local Bookstore! “If there's one thing worse than Alzheimer's, it's ignorance of the disease,” says Martin Schreiber, author of My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer's Caregiver, where he tells the story of his caregiving journey with his wife, who recently succumbed to her illness. Written with Milwaukee author Cathy Breitenbucher, the book was recognized by Caring.com as one of its Best Caregiving Books of 2017. Initially self-published, it was recently published by Harper Horizon. Martin is the former governor of Wisconsin and an award-winning crusader for Alzheimer's caregivers and persons with dementia. His work on behalf of older citizens dates back decades to his 16 years in public service as a state senator, lieutenant governor and governor where he focused on improved quality for nursing home care and development of the in-home Community Care Organization. He went on to become a successful insurance executive and publisher before he started his own government relations firm in 1988. Prior to writing My Two Elaines – and while he still cared for his wife at home – Martin helped the Alzheimer's Association launch Operation: Stronger Together. The multi-year awareness program initiated in 2015 has helped the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter connect record numbers of families to education and resources that are vital to successful caregiving. He also collaborated with Wisconsin's state government and business groups to help create the Dementia-Friendly Employers Toolkit, which is used by human resources departments and employee assistance programs. Such initiatives have led to Schreiber being recognized with awards from the Alzheimer's Association and other organizations. Martin attended Valparaiso University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and earned a doctorate of law from Marquette University. He and Elaine are the parents of four children, Kathryn Lyon, Martin Schreiber, Kristine Haas, and Matt Schreiber. They have 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In this episode, we discuss the all-around ignorance surrounding dementia, Marty's special message to men caring for their wives, the value of therapeutic fibbing and redirection, and the realities of moving a spouse into assisted living. *** After the Podcast Connect with Martin Schreiber Website Facebook YouTube Read Martin's AlzAuthors post: Purchase My Two Elaines on Amazon. Today, we have the MOST special guest—this woman is my HERO, and her books changed my life. Her name is Natalie Lue; she's a podcaster, speaker, artist, and writer of well-known books such as Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, a book that means so much to me I can basically recite it. Like so many women, Natalie had a litany of problems that included bad boundaries, toxic relationships, and a penchant for emotionally unavailable men. Until everything changed in 2005, when a crippling disease and the breakup from a barely-there guy triggered an awakening, igniting the desire to fight back. She wrote down her experiences and documented her journey, which led to self-publishing five best-selling books and creating Baggage Reclaim, including online courses, over 16,000 blog entries, and a podcast that has helped millions of women become "reclaimers" in over 140 countries. Through it all, her mission remains the same: if she can help even one person avoid what she went through and support others who have struggled with abandonment, rejection, trauma, people-pleasing, emotional unavailability, and feeling "not good enough," she's making the world a better place. Natalie Lue is a thought leader in relationships. Her no-nonsense, compassionate, and humorous take has garnered a following in over 140 countries, and she's been featured in The New York Times, NPR, and the BBC, to name a few. She's the author of Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, The No Contact Rule, The Dreamer and Fantasy Relationship and Love, Care, Trust & Respect, which has sold 140K+ copies, and her podcast, The Baggage Reclaim Sessions, has over 2 million downloads. Harper Horizon is publishing her next book, The Joy of Saying No, in October 2022. Aside from her self-help blog, Baggage Reclaim, she is also the founder of the kids' lifestyle blog Bambino Goodies. Born in England, raised in Dublin, Ireland, she's based in South East London with her husband, two daughters, and crazy cockerpoo. She left advertising to become a full-time blogger for the past 13.5 years. She's the former relationship columnist for In The Moment Magazine and has spoken at numerous conferences and given talks at companies including Amazon and InTouch in the U.S. Her current work centers around people-pleasing, boundaries, mindfulness, and creativity. Kerry Brett and Natalie Lue cover a lot of ground. In my opinion, Natalie is a brilliant writer who channeled this epic book and had the unique and perfect skill set to put it all together. If you struggle to date or think something is wrong with you, unworthy or not good enough, this episode will be a game-changer. Topics include:Why Natalie has a knack for calling a spade a spade, tune into why she's always 100 percent right when it comes to problems within relationships. You're not crazy or losing your mind, why it's crazy-making dealing with a "Mr. Unavailable".Why Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is the the gift that keeps on giving. Why Natalie's books speak to the collective pain women, go through. Why women are socialized and conditioned to get the short end of the stick when it comes to toxic relationships. Why this is not the "Last Chance Saloon" and why we should never settle! What a relationship looks like with a "Mr. Unavailable", spoiler alert it's not pretty and never ends well. EVER!Why "Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl" was survival for me because society doesn't talk about these things or these types of men who cause all this distribution, havoc, and pain. The definition of "Future Faking" – when someone fakes a future to get what they want in the present. What "Fast Forwarding" is and why things start intense and moments later end up in smokes. Why "Mr. Unavailable's" use "blowing hot or cold" to manage down expectations and control the narrative. What is an "Overlapper" and why they justified their awful actions to a "slip and fa
