Sometimes little kids lack the ability to express their frustration, fear, and anger in words. That's usually when they decide to whack the other 3-year-old with the toy dump truck, instead of pleasantly sharing.  Experts say aggression often gets a little better once kids can express themselves verbally– although not always, if what goes on in our houses is any indication.  In this episode we discuss how to handle our kids becoming aggressive when we're there to witness it, when we're *not* there to witness it (like at preschool), and what clear, consistent messaging we need to model to move things in a more peaceful direction.  Here are links to some writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode:  Emily Fromm and Nicole Harris for Parents: How to Handle Aggressive Toddler Behavior Emily Edlynn, Ph.D for Parents: My Child Won't Stop Hitting Other Children at Daycare Laura Markham for Psychology Today: 10 Steps to Stop Your Child from Hitting Other Kids Special thanks to our sponsors for this month: Athletic Greens supports your sleep quality, energy, immune system and more with just one scoop per day. If you're enjoying listening to Toddler Purgatory, we'd love for you to take our listener survey. One page, two minutes. We promise! http://bit.ly/ToddlerPurgatorySurvey “Making memories” with our kids is always a fraught proposition, but when they're checking for the elf every morning and whipped into a general holiday frenzy, the tears and tantrums are often pretty close to the surface.  Child specialist Merete Kropp says we can reset the “gimme gimmes” by teaching our kids that giving and receiving are reciprocal actions. By explain the gifts you're giving to others, and the intentions behind them, kids can focus more on the joy of giving than their own expectations. At least sometimes.  It's always worth doing what we can to soften into the joys of karaoke Christmas carols and driving around looking at the lights. When we create memories with our children, the true gifts we are giving them are the tools to become who they are. There is so much fun and joy in the surrender of being just a little bit silly. If you're enjoying listening to Toddler Purgatory, we'd love for you to take our listener survey. One page, two minutes. We promise! http://bit.ly/ToddlerPurgatorySurvey When we hear our kids say something negative about themselves, sometimes we freak out a little. Where did they hear this? Where is this coming from? Who is messing with my baby? ! Most often, if a kid calls herself “stupid” because she's frustrated with homework, she might just be venting. Or joking. She might be showing us that she has a little rigidity around perfection.  But when negative self-talk is insistent, consistent, and persistent, it can also be a sign of stress or anxiety.  In this episode we discuss how to better understand our kids' negative self-talk, and the most productive ways of responding. There's a bonus: turns out most of those strategies also work for our own “No, are you kidding? I look horrible, the pandemic has aged me a decade!” moments. The list of typical parenting fears is longer than a CVS receipt, and for us, researching this episode didn't exactly make that list shorter. Turns out there are big picture, hypothetical fears, most common before the baby actually arrives; there are societally imposed, nightly-news sort of fears; and for most of us, a few more “I know this sounds crazy but” fears, which we have made up all on our own.  It's hard not to want to bubble wrap our kids until college… but since there are probably some negative side effects to that as well, in this episode we discuss how to manage our relationships with some of the most common parenting fears. Regression is what happens when a child revisits an earlier stage of his or her development– and behaves accordingly. Paradoxically, regression can happen right after a child makes a developmental leap or meets a new milestone. Dr. Tovah Klein, director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development, suggests that regression is a manifestation of the constant push-and-pull little kids feel between the need for dependence and the desire for independence. But how are parents supposed to react? Are we supposed to let them start dragging their blankie to pre-K? Is pushback totally required or a terrible idea? In this episode, we discuss what works to discourage the regressive behavior, how to know when to just allow or ignore it, and how to do with our own stress that yes, actually our child will be the first person in history to walk down the aisle at college graduation still using a pacifier.  Here are links to some writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode:  Caroline Vollans for Nursery World: An Essential Guide To Regression Melinda Wenner Moyer for the New York Times: Wait, I Thought You Had Outgrown This Unity Point: Regressive Behavior: Signs of Child Regression & What to Do Special thanks to our sponsors: Hey Honey is the first complete skin care line infused with Honey and Bee Propolis. Why Parents Are Exhausted

Why are parents so tired all the time? Perhaps it's the whole not sleeping thing. But a recent study on maternal exhaustion found that perfectionism is also a huge factor. In other words, we run ourselves ragged making things nice for our loved ones, and then are too exhausted to enjoy those things ourselves.  In this episode, we talk about how our exhaustion affects our parenting, how the pandemic has made it all even harder, and what we're trying in order to get just a little more rest.  Here are links to some of the writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode:  Dr. Sarah Hubert et al: Parental Burnout: When Exhausted Mothers Open Up Gabriela Garcia for The Every Mom: 5 Ways To Fight Mom Fatigue @kids.eat.in.color on Instagram Special thanks to our sponsors: Hey Honey is the first complete skin care line infused with Honey and Bee Propolis. Transitions are hard for little kids, and it's not hard to see why: they usually move a kid from something that they're absorbed in and enjoying to something a lot less interesting and fun. Societal gender roles believe that women are biologically more nurturing than men, instead of socialized to become the nurtures. This belief has reinforced the traditional view of the feminine role as nurturing and caring as opposed to tough, logical. It seems pretty sexist to suggest that women should provide this special attention. Not only are women expected to nurture children, but we are also conditioned to nurture grown men in society. Are chores an age-appropriate expectation for little ones? It's not easy to get buy-in from them, but it's definitely worth it. One study showed that the single best predictor of young adults' success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks when they were three or four. So the best approach is to have our kids start "helping" early and often. In this episode we talk about  ways to right-size the task and the expectation for each age rewards and motivations that work (and why you don't need to start these too early) how to deal with all the whining that will probably result when you present chore-related expectations Here are links to some writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode:  Sarah Aguirre for The Spruce: Age-Appropriate Chores for Kids Ages 2 to 18 The Center For Parenting Education: The Benefits of Chores Barbara Coloroso: Kids Are Worth It! : Giving Your Child The Gift Of Inner Discipline No-Guilt Mom: Get Kids to do Chores: 5 Ways to Respond When They Don't Want To Special thanks to our sponsors: Hey Honey is the first complete skin care line infused with Honey and Bee Propolis. How to Make Mornings Less Morning-y

Toddler Purgatory

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2021 45:58

A good morning starts with a good night before. Kids who are well-rested tend to have an easier morning the next day. Any prep we can do the night before– laying out clothes, prepping breakfast and lunches in advance– can help make the morning routing less chaotic. The morning routine also brings us back to the classic parenting rule "Put your own oxygen mask on first." If you can take even a little time for yourself while you let your kids play in the morning, it can help you face the rest of your day, and your kids, in a better headspace. On busy mornings, consider turning off the tech once everyone is up. Fighting over when it's time to turn off screens and get ready can add conflict to a situation that's already chaotic. But we say do what works for you and your family. Don't try to completely revamp your morning routine all at once. Start small with one change, like taking a shower before the kids wake up or making a protein-rich breakfast for the whole family. Don't try to make everything perfect right away. Not every morning will be smooth sailing, but small changes can make a big difference in making your mornings just a little less stressful. I know honey. My family has been raising clover and wildflower honey in Michigan for nearly a century. I used to work for a bank. When the Summer of 2012 rolled around, I decided to take a week off and take a tour of the state. During my drive, I stopped off at the family farm to see my cousin Ned and have a cup of tea. Ned gave me a tour of the honey shop and showed me something he had been experimenting with, flavored honey. We hatched a plan for me to sell some of it down in my part of the state and BAM! In three years, 3 flavors turned into 25!Why would I stop there? Then I found out about specialty mono-floral honey – different floral types raised all over the world.I bought some plane tickets, started globe trotting, honey hunting and importing the finest, rarest, most spectacular honey from around the world to be able to sell direct to you." He was so awesome, handsome and... different, plus he had a prophetic word for her. She was so excited, she bumped into the house and screamed to her husband, "Hey honey, I saw an angel". He told her she would get pregnant and have a son. Herself and her husband Manoah had been without a child since they got married. Manoah did not doubt her experience, but he needed some more, so he prayed, and "more" he got. This story spotlights on the parents of Samson in a way you might not have thought about before now. It also, like other episodes comes with some profound morals you can learn from. Hey Honey, sweetie, baby! On this week’s episode it is just you and me. I reflect back on a lesson that is taught to all those who prepare to care for those in the healthcare setting. It is the way in which we talk to and address others. I reflect back on several people who triggered me in simple conversation and what YOU and I both can do to ensure we don't make others feel such a way. A group of highly anxious individuals performed at least six acts of kindness a week. After one month, there was a significant increase in positive moods, relationship satisfaction and a decrease in social avoidance in socially anxious individuals. https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/the-science-of-kindness Christen and I decided to try this out for the month of July. You should too! Upload pictures with #hopeforhumankindness or simply send us pics or updates and we will send you a goodie in the mail in August! Since this week focused so much on the impact words can have on people, I'm including the link to Chemo Angel where signing up to send a card to someone undergoing chemo can make a difference in their week. It is something I actively participate in and encourage you to do the same. http://becancerpositive.org/the-chemo-angels/ Are you following us on social media? 34: Small Moments in Marriage Can Make Big Impacts

Summary Brian Mayer talks about the little moments of attempts for emotional connection in a marriage.  Even the simplest of things, like asking you partner if they saw the big accident this morning are actually bids to make a connection.  Depending on how we respond to these small bids overtime can steer the marriage to a place of safety or to a place of danger.  Brian will share what these are and the options for how to respond.  We hope you enjoy today's message.  For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies The moments in a marriage that can make it or break it are the small moments of connections and not the grand shows like a wedding, vacations, or big purchases, I would argue.  The moments we are referring to are small things like, “how was your lunch today” or “did you see the massive downtown fire on the news today” or “did you notice our daughter has been smiling more lately?”  These are not just simply questions, but again are something much deeper.  These are referred to as bids for emotional connection or emotional attachment.  There have been lots of studies of this attachment idea and that the way in which we attempt to attach to our current partner is complex.  It often is a result of how attachment by our caregiver went when we were young.  Did they anxious cling to you, did they avoid you, did they dismiss you, or did they provide the right balance of love and boundaries.  How we make or respond to bids can also be impacted by our previous marriage or other relationships. It can also be impacted by our current relationship.  Are we encouraged, ignored, or belittled when we make attempts to connect with our partner.    Responding to one bid in a certain way will not make or break your relationship usually unless a bid is met with abuse.  In general, it is how over time the responses to these bids go that will determine the relationship outcome.  Let's think about this in terms of your work environment.  You ask questions of people on your team and over time if you are met with disdain or are ignored, what will you do?  Eventually you will stop coming to that source and move on to someone that responds in a more positive manner to your questions.  Same in a marriage relationship! Lets's talk about the ways in which we can respond to these emotional bids from our partner.  These responses are based on the work and research of John Gottman who has worked with couples for more than 40 years.  Turning Toward – This can be as simple as acknowledging the request with a “Yes.”  Of course remembering that body language and tone are important, but the words don't have to be grand or verbose.  Turning Enthusiastically Toward – this is a step beyond Turning Toward.  For example, if your partners asks how you dealt with the drive through the snow this morning, you might respond by saying “Wow it was unbelievable, lots of slow movement, several wrecks.  I felt really bad for many of the drivers.  How did you do this morning, honey?”  See how that is different.  It shows your partner that what they have said is important and that you care about what they say.    Turning Away – Just like Turning Toward can be simple, so can this one.  Only this one is on the negative end of the spectrum.  The most basic example of turning away would be to simply ignore what your partner is saying or sometimes a “huh? as you or they look up from their phone”  It basically says, what you say is not terribly important and I don't want to invest the time in what you have to say.      Turning Against  - This is the worst form of responding to a bid for connection. Not only do you not really care what your partner is saying, but you proceed to attack them for asking or bringing up something up.  It might go something like this.  “Hey Honey did you see the awful earthquake on the news today?”  A Turning Against response might be something like, “No, I don't watch the news and I really have no idea why you do either.  There are plenty of other more productive ways you should be spending your time.”  Ouch this one hurts.  A few of these, and a total shutdown and wall will soon be built.     Responding to Bids is not rocket science.  However, as mentioned previously relationships won't turn on a few of things but if you are patient and persistent then you should see the ship start to turn.  Some caveats to mention that make the ship turning more difficult include alcohol or substance abuse, a current infidelity, untreated mental health issues, or current abuse.  These issues will slow and even stall the impact especially of the more positive turns.  So focusing on these issues are also important.  Your challenge for toward is start Turning Toward much more often than Turning Away.  Resources None Mentioned Thanks For Listening! With so many things that take time in our lives, I more grateful than you know that you took time to listen to this podcast episode.  If you liked this episode and believe that it would be beneficial to a friend, family member, or colleague, please share it using the social media buttons on this page. It would be extremely helpful, it you would consider leaving a rating and review on Apple devices at iTunes  or on Android devices at Google Play as it will help the podcast reach others who need help in rebuilding life and relationships. The Remarried Life Facebook Group is a community of people just like you who get and give support.  Please join today!   As always remember that marriage is nothing something you have, it is something you do.  Talk to you next week unless you are binge listening in the future in which case I will talk to you in about a minute!  Take care.

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0121 And It Will Be About Pressures of Life, Family Operating Your Unique Construction Company This Podcast Is From An Article Written By Sharie DeHart Sharie is voice on the other end of the phone when you call us at 206-361-3950 Calls come from Construction Contractors, Wives, Mothers, Bookkeepers, Advisors and others all wanting to find someone to reassure them that they are not crazy and what they expect and what’s expected from them is not unreasonable. On rare occasions there unreasonable expectations from all sides. Sharie will chat about your business, challenges, employees and spillover of personal stuff. Discuss The How’s Do I? (fill in the blank), What About’s, What’s Next, Can You Help?    Starting Point is with whoever calls in or emails asking her to call them. Chat may be from 10 minutes to over an hour as needed. It’s confidential – you are talking privately about your life and your concerns. Sharie is an impartial observer, for that special “Moment In Time” hopefully the voice of reason. She does her best to give support – even if it does not lead to immediate request for our services. It’s OK to end of the conversation by saying you are not ready yet or it is not a good fit. She asks that you please continue to read blogs, listen to podcasts. Sharie welcomes an email from you once in a while just to Say Hi – with a Quick Update……because she thinks about your from time to time and hope all is well.Life with a contractor can feel like being out of control for both sides.  When life gets that way – contractors turn to their most trusted team mate. From The Contactor – she hears: My wife is so good at keeping track of things – I need her help. From Your Wife See Hears:  He is so fantastic about the work, but I need help with the paperwork. Need Stuff: I can’t do a good job on bookkeeping with what I don’t have; or I don’t know how to do.   Challenge is taking a moment to remember How far the contractor has come from the beginning. This is easier when the decision to become a contactor was a planned, joint decision made by equal partners.  Wives who have a full time job (with benefits) want to help but not as a Second Full Time Job; expected to Quit Their Job to do the construction bookkeeping (guilt trip) usually are less understandingContractor Husbands reach out to their wife who their most trusted partner and Team Mate. It’s a compliment when the contractor asks for help from their wives. Remember back to that Magic Moment – When he asked Honey, Will You Marry Me?  - It was a leap of faith that you would say Yes. Did he or you know all of the challenges, life’s ups and downs your marriage would take? The answer is no.  By the nature of good husbands, they gather inner strength and step up when their wife says: Hey, Honey we are having a baby (again), Hey Honey – that illness is kinda serious (Cancer), Hey Honey, - My parents (your parents) need a Honey Do Project.  Finally the children are all grown up….quality “us time” Hey Honey – We need to provide physical or financial support to parents or other extended family members.  Seems like an endless circle where the “Us Time” and connection gets lost.Somewhere in between all these life challenges the Contractor tries to remember why he started his construction company. And he wants to have the wife chose to grow old with be there to meet him at the door, over dinner, be there at the end of the day to hold hands and recharge for the next day’s battle.   Reasons Why Husbands To Into Business For Themselves: #1 Being a contractor is what they really want to do.  #2 Career Change due layoff from job (example:  recent downturn in the economy) #3 Career Change as a planned event for next stage of a working career #4 Employee with a seizure – My boss is an idiot and I can do a better job#5 Wife wants a better future and sees the benefit of a successful contractor as the path#6 Side work turned to full time work and need to get legitimate (with or without employees) #7 Want to be the boss and grow the business  Being in a Construction Contracting Company is hard on a marriage. Pressures of running a Construction Company are huge. Today it takes more than seeing the local Yellow Page Rep, designing the biggest ad you can’t afford to make the phone ring. Incoming Money is usually unknown. Expenses are Fixed and Due Now!  #1 Multiple Customers types exist in every phase of Construction Contracting.  #2 Clients Want Best workmanship and willing to pay for it.#3 Clients Want Better workmanship at the reasonable price#4 Clients Want Good workmanship at a Fair Price. #5 Customers Want Free, Perfect, Now (Better yet, you pay them!) One of Keys to a Happy Life – Happy Wife is also true for a Happy Husband. Each know your strengths and each other’s strength (husband and wife’s)Be willing to take the time for each other (children grow up / parents grow old and need help) Be willing to be open to new ideas as new challenges arise (adapt as some are out of your control) Patience – That young adult didn’t start out driving the car – they started out as baby learning to crawl. Same is true about running a construction contracting business – improvement is steady steps. Think of it as the Tortoise and The Hare story – With a plan the Tortoise avoided distractions and Won!  And to my Husband (Randal) that I don’t say it often enough – Thanks!(while we have been talking - Randal has been planning, fixing, doing, and more) About The Author:Sharie DeHart, QPA is the co-founder of Business Consulting And Accounting in Lynnwood Washington.
