Too many bright, high-achieving students hit a wall because they lack access, know-how, and the "network advantage" that makes college applications feel possible. In this episode, I talk with Zak Adams, a junior at Harvard University, about how mentorship can help high-potential, low-opportunity students pursue "dream universities" they might not otherwise consider. We discuss Project Access, an international, UK-registered charity that pairs students with mentors connected to their target universities. If you work with juniors right now, this conversation will help you see practical next steps you can take to support students who need a roadmap. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Recognize when a high-achieving student needs mentorship, not just encouragement Identify "high-potential, low-opportunity" indicators that can signal a need for added support Refer students early and plan ahead for deadlines that often arrive around September Understand why mentor matching connected to a target university can provide "network advantage" Encourage students by helping them build a plan when they don't know where to begin Show notes and resources: https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e925

Are great leaders born—or developed? In this episode, we explore the concept of High Potential and what truly drives leadership effectiveness beyond skills, titles, or experience. Using research-backed insights from the High Potential Trait Indicator (HPTI), this conversation breaks down how personality traits influence leadership capacity—and how those traits can be developed over time. You'll learn the difference between behavioral models (like DISC) and personality traits, how leadership potential is defined, and why most people have far more growth capacity than they realize. We dive into the first three of six High Potential traits and examine how they show up in leaders, individuals, and teams:Conscientiousness – the strongest predictor of leadership success, tied to discipline, organization, and goal focusAdjustment – emotional resilience under stress and pressureCuriosity – openness to learning, innovation, and new ways of thinkingYou'll also hear sample assessment questions, real-world reflections, and a discussion on why too much of a good trait can become a challenge. This episode sets the foundation for understanding leadership as something that can be intentionally shaped—not something you either have or don't. Next episode: We'll continue with the remaining three High Potential traits and explore deeper leadership insights. In This Episode:What “high potential” really means in leadershipPersonality traits vs. behavioural stylesThe six traits used to assess leadership potentialWhy conscientiousness matters more than talent aloneHow stress resilience impacts performanceThe role curiosity plays in growth and adaptabilityWhy balance—not extremes—creates strong leaders and teamsIf you're interested in learning more about the High Potential Trait Indicator for leadership development, hiring, or coaching, reach out to learn more.Let's Connectdiscoverwhatworks@gmail.comhttps://pod.link/1614071253https://discoverwhatworks.org/https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaDISChttps://www.instagram.com/discoverwhatworks/https://www.linkedin.com/in/discoverwhatworks#HighPotential #LeadershipDevelopment #Personality #DISC #TeamDynamics #ProfessionalGrowthMentioned in this episode:Fast FactsHow to work with Victoria Theriault and DISCover What Works

As a star and producer on High Potential, Kaitlin Olson is all-in on the ABC dramedy, now in its second season. “The heart and soul of this show is Morgan's family and her children, and I don't want those to ever be cheesy.” Olson's Morgan is a single mom with an extraordinary gift: She's able to piece together information to solve once unsolvable crimes. Finding the balance between family and crime was key to Olson. “Getting it right was really important to me.” And having a say as a producer ensures her creative voice is heard. “I'm grateful every day that I'm in a place where I can trust my instincts and say, ‘This isn't working, and here's how I think we can change it.'” This place in her career has been hard-earned, after 20 years playing Deandra “Sweet Dee” on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “For a show that on the outside looks like a dumb comedy, it's not. It's a commentary. It's so intelligently written.” Now an Emmy-nominee for her work on Hacks, Olson hopes people take comedic actors more seriously. “There's a common misconception that comedic actors can't really act and it's like, okay, you try and make me laugh. It's hard to make someone laugh. Comedy is a talent.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Developing future leaders isn't just about filling roles—it's about shaping people. The question is: how do you identify high-potentials on your team, and once you do, how do you nurture them so they grow instead of fizzle out? HiPos need more than a pat on the back; they need guidance, meaningful support, and a roadmap for growth from their people leader. My special guest today is Shawn Storer and he's simplifying how to turn high-potentials into leaders. If you're a people leader aiming to build a strong succession plan and invest wisely in your future leaders, this conversation is going to give you the clarity you need. Here's how. My special guest today is Shawn Storer and he's simplifying how to turn high-potentials into leaders. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: The one thing people leaders must be super clear on when developing high-potential talent. How to define “high-potential” beyond just performance reviews. The signals that indicate when someone is truly ready for the next level. Which smart stretch assignments accelerate growth the fastest. …and ultimately, how to keep HiPos engaged without burning them out—while still building a solid succession plan. Q: Are you ready to learn how to turn your high-potentials into leaders? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to #DoTheThing! ---- Show notes available with all links mentioned here: https://www.thesimplifiers.com/posts/397-how-to-turn-high-potentials-into-leaders---with-shawn-storer
