There's something poetic about the fact Built To Spill and The Afghan Whigs dropped an album on the same day. The bands may have been diametrically opposed in the '90s, but because they peaked around the same time and have now become a staple for Gen X indie heads, the two groups oftentimes get put in the same category. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen put both bands' legacy into perspective while discussing Built To Spill's When The Wind Forgets Your Name (18:39) and The Afghan Whigs' How Do You Burn? (36:57)The biggest music news of this week came from Harry Styles and the absolute chaos that is his new film, Don't Worry Darling (:55). The film's premiere saw cringey interview quotes, Florence Pugh being a wild card, and a (debunked) rumor that Styles spit on his co-star Chris Pine. Plus, a fan mailbag question had Steven and Ian finally addressing which one of them is guilty of having a squeaky chair (7:26).In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:39), Ian endorsed Phoenix band Holy Fawn, whose new album Dimensional Bleed is out today. Meanwhile, Steven shouted out Bitchin Bajas' new album Bajascillators, which sounds like Philip Glass meets the Grateful Dead. New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 105 here or below and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. Welcome to another bumper episode of Riot Act. It's been a busy and mad week in the world of popular culture, Wembley paid tribute to Taylor Hawkins with one of the most star studded shows of all time, Cardiff hosted the first WWE pay per view in 30 years (and Steve was there, not really knowing what was going on), Harry Styles flobbed in Chris Pine's lap, the DIRTY GHETT, and we have been listening to new albums from Parkway Drive, Holy Fawn, The Bug and Stray From The Path. Having fought our way through all that, we look at a couple of what could be considered guilty pleasures. There are probably plenty of you listening that would consider both The Killers and Insane Clown Posse to be, you know, a little embarrassing. We're not having it though! We give you the case for the defence for a pair of albums that many wouldn't admit to loving. A gnarly display of sick as hell riffs from Texas Death merchants I AM. Holy Fawn expands on their brooding yet lush soundscapes with their new album "Dimensional Bleed". They have been a constant listen for me for quite some time. "Death Spells" delivered earth shaking tones with a blend of post-rock, shoegaze, and black metal sounds. They have only expanded that unique sound with this epic new album available everywhere on Friday. Evan (guitar) swung through Pudgemont on his way to band practice to talk about the evolution of their sound, the electronic elements and orchestration, why every monitor engineer loves working with them, and so much more. Keep up with all things Holy Fawn, and be sure to scope their tour dates at their website. The philosophy world has turned on poor, innocent Freidrich Nietzsche, calling him a 'reactionary' and 'proto-fascist' and 'incel' (probably), but YouTuber Jonas Ceika (aka CCK Philosophy)is here to bring him back, jamming his deeply anti-egalitarian thought into that of Karl Marx, who literally invented being nice. Can he make a convincing case that these two thinkers are compatible? Spoilers: yes. Music by Wormrot and Holy Fawn. Katy Weaver is a professional photographer who created a career for herself out of sheer drive and passion for photography. Katy is also one of Craig’s eldest friends from college at Oregon State - the two met at the college newspaper and wound up working together off and on for many years. So they’re pretty familiar and use this episode to catch up a bit while exploring how Katy went from taking photos of Craig’s metal band in college to taking them of hundreds of people and couples from literally all over the world.Katy is a prolific wedding photographer and provides a great deal of backstory and advice for doing great wedding photography, as well as what it looks like for her to give up the lens as she is currently planning her own wedding. The conversation also veers into some emotional spaces as Katy recently lost one of her best friends - but the memories, much like the photos, are what keep her going even through tragedy. This is one of the most heartfelt and loving conversations featured on this podcast and we hope that truly comes through. And if you want to check out more from Katy and to see her work, go to KatyWeaver.com or find her on Instagram!MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the ridiculous new Holy Fawn LP, “Death Spells,” which was released last year through Holy Roar Records and Deathwish Inc in the states.
