We are kicking off April with what is top of mind for everyone – how AI (artificial intelligence) is affecting and changing aging and caregiving. We have two experts in this area: Lawrence Kosick, Co-Founder of Get Set Up and Dor Skuler, Founder and CEO of Intuition Robotics, makers of ElliQ. They talk about how they are using AI to help both older adults and caregivers make managing health easier and more personalized. In our Caregiver Wellness News, we focus on April as National Stress Awareness Month and Sherri shares the latest on the Tik Tok trend, “cortisol face” and what caregivers should know. Sherri also talks about a new way to measure cortisol and stress in the workplace using saliva being tested with Cleveland Clinic employees. And new insights from a recent report from United Church Homes and MIT AgeLab on how caregivers feel about AI and managing care for their older loved one. For our Well Home Design News, we put the spotlight on April's National Parkinson's Awareness Month and the research that is identifying “parkinson's clusters” – geographic areas with extremely high prevalence for Parkinsons's disease – Sherri talks about what you should know about environmental factors and other risks as well as the signs of Parkinson's – some of which may surprise you. Also, Sherri shares a new report from the National Alliance for Caregiving and the Michel J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research – the first-ever study of caregivers of those with Parkinson's disease. One solution for these Parkinson's caregivers and all caregivers is a training platform from Trualta that helps caregivers up-skilll and learn techniques that help them on their caregiving journey. They share results of more than 3 million minutes caregivers have spent on their platform and what they are saying. In an era where technology is increasingly intertwined with daily life, the emergence of companion robots represents a significant advancement in addressing the unique challenges faced by the elderly population. One such innovation is ElliQ, a tabletop robot developed by Intuition Robotics. Designed specifically to enhance the well-being of older adults, ElliQ serves as a bridge between cutting-edge technology and meaningful human connection. This essay explores how companion robots like ElliQ can alleviate loneliness, foster independence, and improve the overall quality of life for seniors.Addressing LonelinessLoneliness is a pervasive issue among older adults, often exacerbated by physical limitations, loss of loved ones, and social isolation. ElliQ aims to combat this loneliness by providing companionship and engagement through proactive interactions. Unlike traditional technology that requires users to initiate contact, ElliQ is designed to sense when an individual is nearby and initiate conversations. For example, it might greet users with a friendly, "Good to see you!" or inquire about their sleep patterns, thereby demonstrating an awareness of their daily lives. This proactive approach not only encourages interaction but also helps seniors feel valued and connected. The robot's ability to engage users in meaningful dialogue - asking about their day, reminding them of appointments, or even sharing jokes - creates a sense of companionship that can significantly enhance emotional well-being. By fostering these interactions, ElliQ helps to mitigate feelings of isolation, making it a valuable tool for improving mental health among older adults.Fostering IndependenceElliQ not only serves as a companion but also promotes independence among seniors. With features designed to assist with daily activities, such as reminders for medication or social events, the robot empowers users to manage their routines more effectively. For instance, ElliQ can remind users about a doctor's appointment or suggest joining a bingo game with other ElliQ users. Such reminders encourage seniors to participate in social activities, thereby reducing the likelihood of isolation. Moreover, the robot's ability to provide information and facilitate virtual experiences enhances the independence of older adults who may have mobility challenges. For example, ElliQ can take users on virtual tours of historical sites, such as the pyramids, enriching their lives with knowledge and experiences that they may otherwise miss due to physical limitations. This feature not only stimulates cognitive engagement but also allows seniors to explore the world from the comfort of their homes, reinforcing their sense of autonomy.Building RelationshipsA unique aspect of ElliQ is its capacity to recognize and remember individuals in the user's life. As the robot learns to identify family members, it can facilitate interactions that strengthen familial bonds. For instance, a grandchild can be introduced to ElliQ, and the robot will remember their voice and preferences, enabling it to engage in conversations with them in the future. This capability not only fosters intergenerational connections but also allows seniors to feel more in touch with their families, thereby enhancing their emotional well-being.The social dynamics that ElliQ introduces can also shift perceptions of aging. Older adults often feel marginalized in a society that prioritizes youth, but having a companion robot can help them feel relevant and "cool" in the eyes of their grandchildren. This shift in perception can lead to increased self-esteem and a more positive outlook on aging. Conclusion: ElliQ can improve life for aging adultsIn conclusion, companion robots like ElliQ represent a transformative approach to enhancing the well-being of older adults. By addressing loneliness, fostering independence, and building meaningful relationships, these robots can significantly improve the quality of life for seniors. As technology continues to evolve, the integration of emotionally intelligent and socially engaging robots into the lives of older adults holds the promise of a brighter, more connected future. The potential of these innovations to create a supportive environment for seniors cannot be overstated, making companion robots an essential component in the quest to improve elderly well-being.Interview by Don Baine, The Gadget Professor.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Intuition Robotics is a company that has created an AI-driven companion named ElliQ. This innovative product is designed to combat feelings of loneliness and social isolation in older adults. It aims to promote health and activity, supporting seniors as they continue to live independently.AI companion for elderly adultsLoneliness among the elderly is a significant issue in the country. It has been declared a public health crisis by the Surgeon General of the United States, as it surpasses obesity and drug abuse as the leading cause of death among older adults. It is emphasized that there is a shortage of young people who can spend quality time with the elderly on a daily basis. The impact of loneliness on the health of elderly individuals is immense. Loneliness can have detrimental effects on physical and mental well-being, and it is often underestimated. The story of a customer whose husband passed away after 65 years of marriage is shared to illustrate the profound impact of loneliness. ElliQ's ability to greet her, compliment her appearance, and encourage her to go out and be socially active has transformed her life, giving her a reason to get dressed and engage with the world.Intuition Robotics recognized the potential for technology to address this issue and created ElliQ as a solution. However, they wanted their product to be more than just a monitoring device or a prompt-based AI assistant like Alexa. They aimed to create a true friend and companion for the elderly. To achieve this, the device spends material amounts of time with the older adult, remembers past conversations, initiates conversations, and helps the individual achieve their own goals towards healthier aging and social connectivity.Unlike prompt-driven AI, ElliQ actively engages in conversations and prompts the individual for information and action. It classifies and remembers conversations, using them to create future interactions. For example, it may ask about sleep quality, remind the individual of previous pain, and suggest breathing exercises. It can also take physical or digital actions, such as creating tailored stress reduction exercises or arranging video conferences with loved ones or healthcare professionals.ElliQ versus wearablesWearables can be a great way to track health statistics in kids and adults. However, older adults are less likely to wear these devices, partially because they are unaccustomed to them and partially because they might simply forget to put them on.While ElliQ is not a wearable device itself, it can be seen in a comparable place in the sense that it interacts with the user and provides a physical presence. Nevertheless, the hope is that as wearables have become more popular among younger people, ElliQ can provide similar capabilities for older people while adding the benefit of a companion's personality.A powerful but affordable companionOne might assume that an AI-enabled robot like ElliQ would come with a high price tag. However, CEO Dor Skuler reveals that ElliQ is surprisingly affordable, with a monthly charge between $50 and $60. This makes it accessible to a wider range of individuals and families who are seeking a solution to combat loneliness among their elderly loved ones. The affordability of ElliQ is further enhanced by the fact that many local state and government organizations are funding the product. In certain areas, such as New York and most counties in Florida, ElliQ can be obtained for free, paid for by agencies like the Office for the Aging. Additionally, Medicare and Medicaid companies are also distributing ElliQ to their population, recognizing the positive impact it can have on mental health and overall well-being.Conclusion: ElliQ can help older adults feel less lonelyIn summary, AI-enabled robots like ElliQ have been shown to effectively alleviate loneliness among the elderly. The importance of tackling this issue is underscored, and the cost-effectiveness and easy accessibility of ElliQ are high. ElliQ offers more than just assistance; it provides companionship, support, and a proactive presence, becoming a genuine friend and confidant for older adults. Through its interactions and features, ElliQ not only enhances mental well-being but also has the potential to positively influence physical health and overall life quality for the elderly. Some American senior citizens have a new companion to help them combat loneliness — a robot. Joyce Loazia lives alone, but when she returns to her apartment at a suburban Fort Lauderdale senior community, the retired office worker often has a chat with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few miles away, the same voice comforted 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. The women are some of the first in the country to receive the robot ElliQ, whose creators, Intuition Robotics, and senior assistance officials say is the only device using artificial intelligence specifically designed to lessen the loneliness and isolation experienced by many older Americans. ElliQ is a tabletop device that uses artificial intelligence to conduct human-like conversations with its owners. The device, which looks like a small table lamp, has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and swivels. It remembers each user's interests and their conversations, helping it tailor future chats, which can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as the horoscope. It tells jokes, plays music and provides inspirational quotes. Created by an Israeli company, it is being distributed throughout New York and in some Florida, Michigan, Nevada and Washington counties. Users say ElliQ is a friendly and intelligent companion. However, one university psychologist worries that it will keep some seniors from seeking out human contact. Social service workers distributing the device agree that human interaction is best, but not always available for seniors. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Intuition Robotics isn't hurting for funding these days. The Israeli firm announced a $36 million Series B in the early days of the pandemic, and now it's adding another $25 million.

Does that become even more exciting or more terrifying to you?To help illuminate the topic, I wanted to turn to Dor Skuler. He's the co-founder and CEO of Intuition Robotics. The company's award-winning product, ElliQ, is a proactive care companion for older adults. His company has won several awards for its work with ElliQ including Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies and the CES Best of Innovation award.

And the pandemic has definitely accelerated it. It accelerated tech adoption and tech usage for everyone, and that is also true for older adults. They bought tech devices they adopted more video chat than ever before, not just to to chat with their children and grandchildren but also also to consume healthcare care services and to use telehealth, and to chat with their friends. And their their book club steadily was online rather than in person. So we saw this massive boost in adoption which is great and also everyone suddenly realized - and when I say everyone, I mean the general population. Everyone who has an older loved one in their lives and also governments - everyone - realized that it's not a luxury to have older adults use technology. It's a necessity in our society."

The human-machine relationship is evolving. Up until now, our relationship with technology has been primarily command-based for utilitarian purposes. With today's advancing artificial intelligence, that's all about to change. Now more than ever, people want products that are personalized and easy to use, fully understand them, and anticipate their needs. Unlike digital assistants, digital companion agents provide much more than just a voice user interface – social AI entities that proactively interact with each user. They interpret a myriad of sensory data to understand the context of their user and environment that create effective, empathetic experiences that drive the desired outcomes from your product. Intuition Robotics enables the creation of relationships between humans and machines that influence behaviors and emotions through digital companion agents, powered by the company's cognitive AI engine, Q. The company offers Q to 3rd parties, starting with automakers, to transform their products into dynamic, white-labeled digital companions. Q also powers ElliQ, the company's internal product aimed at improving the lives of older adults. They have recently secured a $36M funding round to further the development of the Q platform. Intuition Robotics was also named one of Fast Company's most innovative companies for 2020. I invited, Dor Skuler - CEO, Co-Founder of Intuition Robotics onto Tech Talks Daily. We discuss building digital companions that create a relationship between humans and machines. I also learn more about the story of how they created ElliQ - the sidekick for happier aging which improves the lives of older adults.
Intuition Robotics, the company best known for its ElliQ robot, a digital home companion for the elderly, today announced that it has raised a $36 million Series B round co-led by SPARX Group and OurCrowd. Toyota AI Ventures, Sompo Holdings, iRobot, Union Tech Ventures, Happiness Capital, Samsung Next, Capital Point and Bloomberg Beta also participated in this round. This brings the total funding for the company, which was founded in 2016, to $58 million.

ElliQ is a small robot that looks like a combined tablet and speaker and resembles a non-threatening home decoration. Intuition Robotics developed this robot to help the elderly avoid feelings of loneliness and isolation by keeping them active, entertained, and in touch with their relatives. In line with this objective, ElliQ is designed to have multiple functions. Upon users' request, ElliQ can play music, do messaging and video calls, and read e-mails. The robot can also naturally interact with its users. With advanced artificial intelligence (AI), ElliQ can respond to users' prompts, as well as initiate conversations. It even knows when not to interrupt its users. In addition, ElliQ can mimic the motions of people in a conversation. Also, its AI system allows ElliQ to know more about its users the more conversations it has with them. It can learn the habits of its users and give them personalized recommendations on what activities to do. During its pre-release testing phase last year, ElliQ received positive feedback from the participants. Users commended the robot for being user-friendly and attentive. After the testing phase concluded, Intuition Robotics opened ElliQ for pre-order at $1500 per unit. One of the robot's first buyers is the Center for Aging and Brain Health Innovation. The center will test the robot to find out how much it can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation among the elderly.
In this episode, Audrow Nash interviews Dor Skuler, CEO and co-founder of Intuition Robotics, about a socially assistive robot for older adults named ElliQ. Skuler discusses the motivation for ElliQ, how it infers context and changes its behavior accordingly, and how ElliQ adapts its behavior over time.
Each year, the tech industry Super Bowl that is the Consumer Electronic Show takes over Las Vegas in a display of enough futuristic innovation, gadgetry and wizardry to blow the circuits and make a believer of even the most resolute luddite. The name “Consumer Electronics Show” feels a little outdated, hinting at the Betamax player that was never hooked up. In reality, the convention feels more and more like it is sponsored by lightworkers from another dimension. Certainly, the ideas that will drive consumer change in the technology sphere are debuted here, and on this show floor what was once a dream begins to become reality. More than 4,400 companies exhibit on the show floor, walked by over 182,000 attendees from 160 countries. From a glass toaster and “egg whisperer” that tells you which eggs are oldest, to digital sleep aids that retrain your brain, and of course to TV’s the size of your garage door, CES delivers astounding gizmos of every size. For Toyota, the mission as CES is a little more serious: Innovations in autonomous driving, alternative fuel cell technologies, plus the range of mobility solutions currently in development give Toyota a strong slate of news on the floor. It’s our chance to offer a glimpse of the technologies that will change society and define the future – and here at Toyota, we like to stay on the cutting edge of this revolution. But it’s not just about the stuff, cool as it is. As Toyota’s Executive Vice President of sales, Bob Carter, said on stage at CES, “even though new technology is important, what matters is how it serves society. And that’s why our global president Akio Toyoda wants our company to transition from an automobile company to a mobility company, pursuing mobility for all.” So today, we’re not just looking at cars – we’re looking at the future of mobility, which in some cases, is actually already here. That’s why we started something called Toyota AI Ventures, which is Toyota's first dedicated venture capital fund. It’s a $100M fund that was founded in July 2017, and it's focused on investing in early-stage companies that are focusing on artificial intelligence, data, and the cloud, as applied to autonomous mobility and robotics. So, we look for entrepreneurs that are bringing disruptive business models and innovative technologies to the marketplace, and give them the resources they need to bring forth the future of mobility. Today’s guests are part of Toyota AI Ventures and join us from the show floor to offer a glimpse of this future: Toyota AI Ventures CEO Jim Adler, Intuition Robotics CEO and co-founder Dor Skuler, and May Mobility CEO and co-founder Ed Olson. We’re also joined by special guest and co-host Austin Evans, a tech influencer who’s been at this longer than the idea of being a tech influencer or YouTuber have existed. Austin posted his first tech video in 2007 and now has over 3.6 million subscribers on YouTube. To kick off our CES special, let’s sit down with Austin to learn more about what his world is like and the trends he’s seen at CES over the past 9 years. So settle in for a trip to CES 2019 – the closest thing on Earth to a rocket to Pluto. In this episode, we examine the problems faced by millions of people, their families, and caregivers, as they work to maintain their mental and physical health as they age. We look at new in-home technologies that combine Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, sensors and a range of other technologies to create very different solutions that help maintain independence and manage and monitor health. We are joined by Dor Skuler, the CEO and co-founder of Intuition Robotics, and Assaf Sella, the CEO and co-founder of Kytera. One of the key questions surrounding care for aging populations is can people keep healthy and active at home so we can prevent or delay the point at which they require more intensive, and more expensive, [...] Get the full show notes here. --- This episode is made possible in part by Start-Up Nation Central. We recorded this episode, with the home robotics company Intuition Robotics, earlier this year while we were at Mobility Week in Tel Aviv, Israel. Because Intuition is not making a product that is directly related to mobility, we weren't sure if the episode made sense to run here on The Autonocast, so we've been keeping it in cold storage. But after talking to one of their investors, Jim Adler of Toyota AI Ventures (Episode #106), we have a better understanding of why a massive car company might invest in a product like Intuition's... so with that in mind, enjoy this somewhat out-of-the-ordinary but enlightening episode.
