From humble beginnings to building the No More Nine to Five Club, a community dedicated to helping individuals achieve financial independence Jason McNamara joins me to talk about reclaiming your time and learning better financial habits to achieve financial independence. So, if you're ready to break away from the mundane and embrace a life of financial freedom, make sure to tune in to this episode — do things differently and create the life you've always dreamed of. Listen now!Key Highlights:Reclaim Their Time (3:33)Built To Change The World (5:04)The System Works (9:00)Shiny Object Syndrome (13:21)Joining The Club (15:55)About the Guest:Jason McNamara has found his passion after a successful career in sales where he transitioned to Business Development, Investments, Entrepreneurship, and Coaching and Training. He co-founded 4DV's which is a business accelerator and efficiency optimization corporation meant to help entrepreneurs quickly scale their small businesses to maximize potential. He also sits on several nonprofit boards that range from revitalizing lower-income neighborhoods to coaching youth baseball to help give back to his community. Before all this, he ventured into Real Estate flips, long-term rentals, and short-term rentals and still manages his portfolio today. He invests in businesses and endeavors not only based on extrinsic value potential but looks for opportunities that will give back to the world as well. Born in the heart of the Caribbean (USVI) and growing up in Florida, Jason learned a lot about many different cultures while excelling in school where he won many awards. One of his proudest moments was winning the American Mathematics Competition in his school of 2500 people, while he was in the tenth grade while competing against everybody else. He went on to become a certified EMT, with degrees in Accounting, Organizational Management, and an MBA from the University of Miami and he has committed himself to never stop learning. Jason joined the Navy in 2007 and trained to be an Aviation Technician on the P3 Orion aircraft and served the joint task force Guantanamo Bay assisting with prison operations and CIA interrogations where he earned two Navy and Marine Corps achievement medals and was Honorably discharged from active duty in 2010. From there he spends a few years working to help veterans overcome barriers to employment through outreach and direct job developments with interested employers and pioneered new initiatives that drastically lowered veteran unemployment in the four-county area where he worked. His father's passing changed his perception of what to do next so he took a chance on a new career. Jason is no stranger to taking a risk so he decided to step out of his old position and take on a new one, door-to-door sales. This is where he feels he evolved the most. “I remember someone pulling a gun on me after I knocked on the door, the trick in sales is similar to everything in life, stay calm and think. I wasn't shot. I was able to diffuse the situation with my words and smile and then ten minutes later the gentleman came back out with his credit card”-Jason McNamara. After a few months, he was quickly promoted to Sales Supervisor where he trained dozens of new successful sales reps and eventually moved on to other positions achieving the highest ever recorded sales, a wall full of plaques and awards, and many bonus checks. His true passion wasn't in selling services anymore though, he wanted to do more and give back. “I treat every customer like I would my own grand-mother, attention to detail, integrity, honor, certain core values resonate with a customer and trust-building is essential in continuing any successful business endeavor. Sales and Lead Gen are extremely complex and there is no one size...

Next week is the future though and today is today and by next week today will be the past, which is fitting since we're talking with Jason McNamara about PAST TENSE! Past Tense from Dark Horse Comics is a neo-noir thriller about Ashley, a sort of tour guide to the past using drones to show her clients past events as they actually unfolded. Things take a dark turn when she uncovers a previously unknown serial killer. It's gripping, the art is phenomenal, and I absolutely loved this conversation with Jason. Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2022 28:22

Hello, hello, hello. This IS Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and I AM Marc Hershon, host for Episode 330. Sorry that this installment is a bit late. I caught a little bit of a cold, which you might still hear in my voice, and didn't want to impinge on your eardrums with my hoarseness. I'm not the ONLY host of Succotash, as you may well know. I share these duties with my awesome counterpart, Tyson Saner, as we switch off episodes so we can bring you the very most bestest clips from soundcasts across the Interverse. Just last week he hosted Epi329, an edition entitled, “Pleasure, Gender & Pens”, where he featured snippets from a trio of soundcasts, including My Pleasure, Gender Reveal, and Pen Pals. It was a delightful roundup for your ears and, if you missed it, you can still catch it across the web at ear joints like Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Audible.com, iHeart Radio, Soundcloud, PodBay, Podcatcher, YouTube…you get it. And a great place to start listening is right from our homesite, at SuccotashShow.com, where you can dip back into our 11+ years of soundcastery deliciousness. As for this week, and what I have in store for you in this “Early Thanksgiving Feast o' Clips”, we'll be sampling Ghosted!, Overwhelmed & Living with Judith Lucy, My Dad Wrote A Porno, and The Midnight Snack. And the whole shootin' match is brought to you by our longtime, non-paying, freeloading sponsor Henderson's Pants and their new High-Waisted Hip Huggers. Before I wade into the pile of clips for this week, and for those who caught Dana Carvey on this show as my guest for Epi326, where he talked about his new soundcast, The Weird Place, you may be curious how it did in its one week debut. I talked to Dana yesterday and it has ended up in the Top 10 in comedy soundcasts for the past two weeks in a row! So now he's waiting to see if the folks at Team Coco believe in it enough to pony up the scratch to make more episodes. I bet they will. CLIPS My Dad Wrote A PornoOne of the most unique soundcasts when it debuted back in 2015 had to be My Dad Wrote A Porno. Jamie Morton discovered that his father, writing under the nom de plume “Rocky Flintstone”, had written a pornographic novel call Belinda Blinked. Reading it aloud to his friends James Cooper and Alice Levine proved to be too hilarious to keep to themselves so they turned the experience into a soundcast. I actually chatted with the trio back in our Episode 141, which you can check out on our SuccotashShow.com homesite. I wanted to revisit the show because they have recently announced that My Dad Wrote A Porno will be closing down next month. Maybe it's because they're tired of it, or maybe Rocky won't stop writing porn – he's up to his 6th book in the Belinda Blinked saga. This clip is from their “Best of Book 6” episode, where they get into some of Belinda's best bits, so to speak. Ghosted! There is certainly no shortage of soundcasts dealing with the paramormal out there. Many of them lean into comedy because, otherwise, I guess we'd just be scared shitless all the time. Take, for instance, the clip we have from Ghosted! With Roz Hernandez. Specifically from an episode that dropped earlier this month, where Roz' guest was comedian Matt Braunger. In this part of the show, they listened to a couple of EVPs, or “electronic voice phenomena”. If you don't know what those are, Roz explains at the top of the clips. And even with Roz and Matt joking about what they're hearing, you might want to sleep with your light on from now on… Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & LivingI was turned onto this next Australian-based soundcast from our friend “Jabs”, or Jason McNamara as it says on his birth certificate, host of The DHead Factor, which is currently on the longest hiatus ever, as well as Boganwood. The soundcast is Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living, and Jabs says Judith Lucy has “very dry but hilarious Australian humor”. The show description on Apple Podcasts reads: “After lockdown Judith is still asking the big questions. Between baking and wondering if she had a drinking problem, Judith wondered how happy we'd been in our old lives and why 'back to normal' is not a good idea for us or the planet. She's out to change her life and yours.” In our clip, she decides to make some changes in her home to save money and to benefit the environment. She invites Brett Hedger, the greenhouse programs officer for the City of Port Phillip, over to see just how bad her place is. It's…not good. The Midnight Snack One of the first Succotash listener-slash-supporters-slash-soundcasters out there to start using the term soundcast  for their own show was Dave In The Cave. That's the only name I ever called him (although I do know his name is actually Dave Howard…), and he had a show called Taco Tuesdays. That show ended up, eventually, in the soundcast graveyard – which is a segment we should maybe bring back. After a few years off my radar, Dave In The Cave popped back on when he responded to one of our Succotash tweets last week. It turns out he has a soundcast called The Midnight Snack but he's kind of off the reservation in terms of where the show is distributed. I'm only finding it on Soundcloud, which is a fine place to be – you can find us there, too, of course. The show has an amazing cast of wacky characters who seem to appear only in bumpers between some cool original music. We have a sample from his latest episode 98… That's it. There is no more Episode 330 left in the can – it is all gone. Feel free to listen to it again if you want, or you can hang around our feed and listen to Episode 331 next week with Tyson. Actually, Tyson and I are going to each take some vacation time around Thanksgiving, so both Epi 331 AND 332 with be Succotash: Second Helpings. Past episodes from the archives that have been re-heated for your pleasure. Have a nice Thanksgiving holiday if you're in the United States. If you're elsewhere in the world, have a great Thursday! And remember: If you ever have anyone ever ask you if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Hello, listener, and welcome to Succotash, THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I am none other than Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly co-host of this here show, a duty I delightfully split with Tyson Saner. If you were around for last week's installment, Epi327, you would have heard Tyson laying out a triple shot of soundcast clips from the likes of Add to Cart, I, Podius, and 2 Spooky 2 Handle. Much like COVID, it's not too late to catch it. Poke around your favorite soundcast haunts like Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Audible, YouTube, Soundcloud…phew… pretty much anywhere you can stream and/or download soundcasts, that's where Succotash is to be found. I've got a fun-size assortment for you, too. First off, I've clipped a bit of The Weird Place, Dana Carvey's new scripted comedy soundcast that he told us all about two episodes ago in Epi326. That just dropped on Halloween this week so give a listen hear and then go download that sucker. Tell ‘em Succotash sent you. Then I've got more soundcastic fun from the likes of Endless Honeymoon, Hamish & Andy, Dork Nation, and Callan's Kicks. So, if you're keeping track, that FIVE clips this week. PLUS I have a special treat – an original song from our producer Joe Paulino that's kind of a tribute and kind of an answering echo to a Neil Young song from back in the day. And, of course, the whole shootin' match is brought to you by Henderson's Pants, our 100% fake sponsor with their just-in-time for Thanksgiving Turkey Trousers. CLIPS The Weird PlaceAs I mentioned, we had Dana Carvey on the show two episodes ago, mostly to talk about The Weird Place, his new comedy scripted show. I encourage you to go listen to that for a lot of inside scoop on the show. And although I played a little one minute teaser for the show, I wasn't allowed to clip the show until it officially dropped, which JUST happen on Halloween. So here are a few minutes of their very first episode, entitled “Pirates vs. Submarine, Part 1”. Hamish & AndyWe next venture from The Weird Place to Down Under, and a soundcast called Hamish & Andy. The hosts, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, got started radio, it seems, but have gone full soundcasts as of about 5 years ago. I checked in with friend-of-the-show Jason McNamara, AKA “Jabs”, who live in Canberra, and he says, “They're massive here. Have TV shows and everything.” They seem super popular in a lot of places around the world, so it's high time we gave ‘em a snip on Succotash. In this clip they've discovered they have not only been recently featured in a magazine called Podcast Weekly, and there's the Hamish & Andy quiz, where you can learn if you most like Hamish, Andy, or their producer, Jack. Spoiler alert: There is no Podcast Weekly magazine. Hamish and Andy are just having their way with you. If. You can swing with the Aussie accent, this show's pretty good fun. And there may not be a Podcast Weekly but did you know there IS a Succotash Daily? Yeah, it's this daily page that shows up in your inbox if you subscribe to it. It's completely free and it just a roundup of soundcast and comedy news things. You can type in https://hersh.co/SDaily to get there or follow the link in this week's blog entry at SuccotashShow.com Endless HoneymoonCo-host Tyson clipped the Endless Honeymoon soundcast a little over a year ago, but hosts Moshe Kasher and Natasha Leggero recently had Dak Sheper, of Armchair Expert soundcast fame, on and they got into a lot of interesting conversational territories. At one point, Dak and Moshe started comparing the sizes of their RVs. As men do. DorkNation (High School Sucked)I'm a little confused by our next offering, which is back in the U of A. I first thought the soundcast was called High School Sucked, hosted by Jane Stanton and Darcy Michael. But the most recent three episodes are called DorkNation – one word: Dorknation – and the “About” section on the website says “Jane Stanton hosts new guests each week to dish some dirt on High School. Were they best years of our lives? Does it actually get better? Join us with a new guest each week as we attempt relive the "glory" days.” And then the first episode of “DorkNation has both hosts kicking off what they're calling “High School Sucked.” This episode, the first of three DorkNation shows – maybe more are coming, I'm not sure – feature just ordinary folks waxing on about how miserable high school was. This clip features a guest named Haylyn talking about how her best friend, who started out as her worst enemy, managed to get through it all. Callan's KicksLet's head over to Ireland now for a clip from a soundcast called Callan's Kicks, featuring Oliver Callan, who is a comedian, a voice actor, and an impressionist. He's been doing his soundcast almost as long as we have, having started back 10 years ago in 2012. And his “kicks”, are a reference to the satirical shots he takes on the show at a variety of public figures, mostly through audio sketches where he does the voice of whomever he's sniping at. Our snippet is from the episode that dropped just last week, entitled “Rishi, Bono, and Halloween”. Here's Bono, reading an excerpt from his new book about Ireland. Young Man by Old NeilThat's it for our bonus buttload of comedy soundcast clips BUT, as promised, we have a special treat. Our producer, Joe Paulino, has recorded a clever song, a ditty if you will, called Young Man. It's part song parody, part homage, and part very original. Without further ado, here it is… That bring Episode 328 of succotash to a close. Remember to listen to Tyson Saner when he brings you Epi329 in this same feed n ext week. And remember: If you're even working steerage in an of steam frigate across the Atlantic and it starts taking on water, then the crew and passengers start panicking and heading for the lifeboats, and one of them stops and asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Hello, friend-o! Marc Hershon here to host Epi243 of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. By the look of things – fingers cross, masks still on, and socially distanced yet – things in the US of A are sort of showing signs of getting…dare I say it…post-pandemic-ready. Maybe. Who knows? People were burning their masks in Idaho in some bizarre “freedom ritual”. Very reminiscent of the exact same activity that happened right here in San Francisco around 1918 when they thought the Spanish Flu was tapering off. That didn’t go so well and things actually got worse. But we’ll hope for the best and you never know – maybe mask smoke will be as effective as the scientifically developed vaccines in knocking this thing down. My main point of bringing up the current state of affair is that, as the pandemic eases, me and my every-other-weekly co-host Tyson Saner maybe restoring this soundcast to some semblance of normal. As you may know, the 10th anniversary of this show is just a month away, in April, and if we feel the spirit move us, we’re likely to restoring the original title of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Although, actually the REAL original title was Succotash, the Comedy PODCAST PODCAST. But we ditched the P-word for the “soundcast” moniker a couple of years in and that’s who we are. If you have anything to say on the matter, whether it’s about our decade-o-versary or the impending title change, you can write  us at either m-a-r-c@succotashshow.com or t-y-s-o-n@succotashshow.com. Or hit us up on the socials. Or call our toll-full warm line at (818) 921-7212 and leave us a message. Speaking of Tyson, if you missed his most recent installment, Epi242, never fear! It featured clips from the Valley Boys Podcast, The Dinner Party Download, and The Record Store Day Podcast. Hooray! You can still catch up at Spotify, Stitcher, Apple or Google Podcasts, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or even on our own damn homesite — http://SuccotashShow.com But let’s go ahead and get into “now” mode. As in what I have in store for you today, right here. I’m calling Episode 243 “Soundcastin’ Friends” and while, admittedly, we call a lot of soundcasters friends, I pulled out a quartet of clips from some of the ones that popped into mind recently because they either reached out or I heard them talking about me OR I’m actually in the clip. Yes, I’m THAT shallow. The shows in question are Chillpak Hollywood, Screams & Moans, Waking from the American Dream, and the 4 Corners Podcast. The last one actually features a friend of the show who is a guest on 4 Corners, but that’s a technicality. In addition, this show is sponsored by the Massage-O-Pedic Trousers by Henderson’s Pants. CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood Hour Okay, if you know our show then you know this show, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, hosted by Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. Listening to Chillpak was one of the inspirations for me to start up Succotash, and the guys were my first interview outside of Studio P. We even had a couple years run where we were trying to get a real old-fashioned feud going to try to get some press but that never came together. I was recently honored to be asked to be part of a little comedy roundtable on a two-part episode of the show, along with Dean and the thoughtful, insightful, and wickedly funny Suli McCullough. Phil was moderating and we talked about our comedy influences, how we got started performing, and a variety of other topics. In this clip we hit on improv, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and Suli’s high school specialty, the Dumb Joke of the Day. 4 Corners PodcastEast Coast comedian Lenny Marcus hosts the 4 Corners Podcast,  and runs a tight ship: 4 topics. 15 minutes per topic. A recent guest on the show was Barry Weintraub, a very funny political comedian and friend of mine for years. He was even my boss at one time, back when I was a stringer for his Comedy USA magazine. He’s been back in his native New York for along time now, was hosting the Schmoozecast out of the Comic Strip and, as I said, was just on 4 Corners where he and Lenny yakked about saving money and a little about comedian and former Succotash guest Ritch Shydner… Screams & MoansOkay, this is two soundcast friends at once, neither of who have I ever met face to face. The show is Screams & Moans, hosted by Megan Pentecost, who I only knew for years from her Twitter handle @PodcastWhore, but who was a very early listener to Succotash who went on to start her own jam, to which her logline is: “It's the podcast about movies and sex but not together because that would be porn.” She recently had Jason McNamara guesting, AKA “Jabs” from The Dhead Factor and Boganwood soundcasts. If that name’s familiar, Jabs was on THIS show not long ago, back in Epi213 “Doin’ It Down Under w/Jason McNamara”. And, just like me, Megan screwed up and forgot to hit record the first time around had to re-record the whole episode with Jabs a second time. I guess she picked up a thing or two listening to this show. In this clip, they’re talking about the movie Event Horizon. Waking from the American DreamThe next clip has a little hair on it because the episode of Waking from the American Dream that I got it from dropped last November 2020. It was the most recent episode I could find. Hosted by yet another friend of this show, Kelly Carlin, it’s not exactly a comedy soundcast but Kelly is witty as hell as well as being smart and insightful as well. She’s been cooped up just like the rest of the intelligent folks for the past year and I love what she has to say here about her jigsaw puzzle experience… That’s all I got for you this day, friend-o! Tyson Saner will be back in this same feed next week with Episode 244 and a batch of new soundcast clips. I plan to return the week after that with an interview instead of clips, but we’ll have to see if that comes together. It WON’T be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and that’s all I’m going to say. Until we meet again stay 6 feet out of trouble, wash those filthy mitts, mask that ugly mug, and if anyone asks if you’re heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Hello, dear listener. I’m Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host of this show. Happy to be back. Last week co-host Tyson Saner was in the hot seat with Succotash Shut-In Epi240, favoring your pearly shell-like ears with clips from such audio wonderments as What Had Happened Was, Oprah's Master Class, and The Al Franken Podcast. You can still catch that installment at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, as well as from Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and wherever diner soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. Just last week - the past two weeks, actually - I was a guest on the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, where, along with comedian and writer Suli McCullough, I participated in a comedy roundtable discussion. We talked about our comedy influences, the effect of the pandemic on live performance and the creative process, and more. Check it out when you can at their homesite: ChillpakHollywood.com, or wherever you grab your favorite soundcasts. Back in July I did an episode focusing on some soundcasts that I called Doin’ It Down Under with Jason McNamara, and I tapped our old friend Jabs to find me a quartet of soundcasts from Australia and New Zealand. For this installment, Epi241, entitled Crossin’ The Pond, I leaned on another friend of the show, George Grimwood, to load us up with a four-pack of shows from England and he came through with flying colors. It’s not like we don’t occasionally feature British comedy soundcasts. We recently clipped From the Oasthouse with Alan Partridge, and Strange Times with our friend Davian Dent. But on tap today we’ve got four shows we’ve not featured before, including Looks Familiar, The CheapShow, Rule of Three, and The Adam Buxton Podcast. This episode is sponsored by Henderson’s Pants new Camo Cut-Offs. Let me wax on about George Grimwood for a moment. We met via the socials back in the early 20-teens and then crossed paths in real life at, I believe, the third Los Angeles Podcast Festival. You can hear a short chat I had with him while we were hovering in the lobby area back exactly a hundred episodes ago, in Succotash Episode 141. George runs the Podnose Network that carries a number of soundcast over in England which he points out is “the UK’s leading independent entertainment podcast network,” with thousands of hours of content and more on the way. He himself is rebooting the show he hosts, called The Talk Show Talk Show (no relation to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast…), in which he analyses classic (and not-so-classic) episodes of Late Night talk shows, including Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and more. So George not only suggested the shows we’re clipping today (I actually harvest them myself), but gave me little blurbs about each show which is a tremendous help. Thanks, George! Without further ado, let’s get into this collection of English clips. (Do you think they call snippets crisps over there?) Looks Unfamiliar Our first show, Looks Unfamiliar, features journalist and writer Tim Worthington speaking with a guest about lost nostalgia - aspects of pop culture that have been discarded and forgotten in time, but often remembered fondly or with fear by the guest. Our clip is from recent episode 73 with director Matt Lee, and they’re talking about this service that used to exist called Dial-A-Song, where you could call a number on your phone and hear music played on your phone. CheapShow The CheapShow is a soundcast featuring Paul Gannon and Eli Silverman searching for bizarre treasures one may find in the Poundlands – which is a chain of British variety stores – I think it must be like our Dollar Stores here in the US, as well as bargain bins and charity shops, often culminating in some very unusual discoveries and hilarious segments. Our clip has the two lads reading a submission from a listener about a very strange find. Spoiler alert: It’s a turd. Rule Of Three This next soundcast, Rule of Three, was the winner of the best Arts and Culture division at last year’s British Podcasts Awards…and then promptly went on hiatus. But comedy writers Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris are coming back for more, according to our man George. And good thing, too – this is a super show! The hosts talk to comedians about something funny that they love. Guests pick whatever it is that makes them laugh — a book, a film, a tv show, a comic, a radio show, anything — and then the hosts and guest dig in. Our clip features a guest that I wish was a friend of Succotash, Eddie Izzard. He’s funny, and smart, and the thing he picked to highlight on the show was John Lithgow, specifically from his appearance on TV’s 3rd Rock from The Sun. The Adam Buxton Show The Adam Buxton Show is an interview show, or a “chat show” as they say across the Atlantic. Adam was originally part of Adam & Joe, a thoroughly enjoyable cult television series he did with Joe Cornish. They then became radio personas and, while Joe has been busy directing films, Adam has been podcasting. And writing, too — he recently released a memoir entitled Ramble Book. Our final clip of this episode features Adam’s “Ramble” with Canadian comedian Tony Law, where they share their experiences of being a stranger in a strange land – Disneyland. That’s a wrap on our listen to a few shows from Across the Pond. I realize that some of those accents from the British Isles might be a bit think for some of our US listeners, so I’ll advise you do what I do – listen again. It’s the King’s English, people! You’re bound to pick it up. Thanks once again to George Grimwood of the Podnose Network. If you want to reach out to him, you can email him at podnose@gmail.com. He tells me that they are looking to expand beyond the UK content next year. Who knows? Maybe Succotash can finally get our network stripes! I would love to authentically be able to say, “We’re getting the sign from the network to wrap it up…” Until then, we’re just going to have to wrap it up ourselves. Remember that Tyson will be here next week with another bouquet of soundcasts clips for you. And I’ll be back the week after with something nice for your ears. Until that time, stay safe, keep warm, wear a mask, wash your hands and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Hey there - it's your every-other-weekly host Marc Hershon here with Epi213 of Succotash Shut-In: The Soundcast Stimulus Package. But I am not manning this installment alone — I'm joined by a longtime friend of the show, Jason "Jabs" McNamara, all the way from Canberra, Australia! And this isn't the first time we're done this but it has been a LONG time — Jabs last co-hosted Succotash with me back in Epi40: Down Underin' with Jabs, in November of 2011, the very first year of the show. Jabs used to be the ringmaster of a three-headed dog of a soundcast called The Dhead Factor (we talk about that in this episode), a show which has been on a VERY long hiatus. He also produced a comedy narrative soundcast from 2013, a limited series called Boganwood (which you can still catch over on Stitcher.) We also talk more about Boganwood during this episode if you want to find out more.   An avid runner, he's got a great wife and three kids in Canberra, the capital of Australia, where he holds down a day job working at a hospital. We're in farily regular communication so I thought I'd see if he wanted to grab several clips of some Aussie soundcasts and jump on the show to present them with me. Not only did we do it up in audio but, since we were on Zoom, we captured the "magic" (if one could call it that) and — for the first time ever — we will be simulsoundcasting an episode of Succotash! In audio form in all the usual places AND on YouTube!   The shows that Jabs picked out for us to feature clips from this episode include I Don't Know About That, Tony Martin's Sizzletown, The Betoota Weekly News Bulletin, and Unravel True Crime: Snowball. The last one isn't a comedy soundcast clip per se, it's the trailer for a bizarre true crime show that's so bonkers as to be very entertaining. This installment of the show is brought to you by Flying Jodhpurs from Henderson's Pants.   CLIPS   I Don't Know About That If you've been wondering where Australian-born, American-transplanted, comedian Jim Jeffries has been since his Comedy Central commentary show shut down last year, this is it. He brings his special brand of non-knowledge to I Don't Know About That, where he's challenged by staffers Kelly Blackheart, Forrest Shaw, and Jack Hackett to figure out the ins and outs of various topics, only to then have a real loive authority on those topics come on to set him straight.   Tony Martin's Sizzletown Aussie comedian Tony Martin is a longtime stable in his native land. Now he's plunged into the world of soundcasts with Sizzletown. Replete with offensive tweets, the frustration of COVID-19 lockdown, and rampant conspiracy theories, Tony is joined by folks like Niles Nyquist, Shane [REDACTED], Simon Haight, and The Pikelet Man — all calling in from their own bunkers.   Unravel True Crime: Snowball Season 4 of Unravel, a true crime show from ABC in Australia. This is the trailer for a wild show that actually involves the show's host, Ollie Wards, because his brother gets conned by an American woman from California who bulks the family out of  giant sums of money.   The Betoota Weekly News Bulletin I love the name of this soundcast so much! Hosted by Cadet Wendell Hussey, along with Errol and Clancy, The Betoota Weekly News Bulletin is a showcase of some of "the biggest stories" from The Betoota Advocate, Australia's oldest newspaper. (Jabs tells us that Betoota is actually a ghost town.)   I can't thank Jabs enough for co-hosting this episode with me — especially because we had to record it twice due to my Zoom ineptitude. Will his show, The Dhead Factor return? who's to say? Enjoy him here with me and hope for more.   Co-host Tyson Saner will be on hand with Episode 214 next week. (If you missed it, you can catch his episode 212 from last week here, where he features clips from Sincast, 16oz Cinema, and The Neighborhood Listen.   If you get a chance to get up to Apple Podcasts to rate and review our little soundcast in a favorable manner, you'll be our bestest friend. Or just give us a little word-of-mouth, which we call passing the Succotash.   — Marc Hershon

Jason McNamara sat down with me on some steps at Duboce Park in San Francisco to record this talk nearly four years ago, and it's easily still on topic for this show. Taking a breather from the current national blowback and the holiday crush, this episode features an interesting talk at a key moment for both of our careers, when things were about to shift, and we really, really wanted them to. Numerous insights and laughs fill an energetic discussion about breaking in, staying in, doing work that matters to you, feeling like outsiders and seeing things from that perspective. The episode was recorded to coincide with the Kickstarter campaign for The Rattler, written by Jason and illustrated by the inimitable Greg Hinkle. After the success of that kickstarter, the book went on to be one of my favorite reads in the last few years, and ultimately it was picked up and re-published by Image Comics. This conversation and the amazing book Jason and Greg made, are a testament to the fact that you can make it happen for yourself in comics if you're willing to put in the work. Buckle up for plenty of insight on that, and some incredibly entertaining convention anecdotes. Welcome, welcome, welcome – to Succotash Clips, Epi101, the first episode of Season 2! As previously announced, my plan for Season 2 is to split our usual Succotash offerings – Clips and Chats – into separate shows. And that’s what you have here in the first show of Season 2. Succotash Clips. All clips. No interviews. My goal is to have these shows come in at about or under an hour. And they should be a little easier to produce as well.  Our Associate Producer, Tyson Saner, grabbed up a bunch of comedy podcasts clips. I’ve pulled a few. And so let me give you the rundown of the podcasts we’re sampling this time out: 80’s Reboot Overdrive, Comedy On Vinyl, Getting On, Hello Internet, The Kundalini Files, That Would Be Me and The Big Cat Show. In addition, we’ve got not one but TWO of our Burst O’ Durst segments this show, a classic Henderson’s Pants commercial, and the Tweetsack. IN REVIEW Now that the holiday break is over, I’m back posting podcast reviews. This past week, for This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com and Huffington Post Entertainment, I took a listen to a couple of very funny episodes of The New Hollywood Podcast with Brian Flaherty. On Monday he had a short 15 minute installment with schlocky 70’s film producer Alan Marlowe, followed on Wednesday featuring an interview with Alan McKay, Will Ferrell’s comedic partner in crime. The joke is that Marlowe is a character that McKay started riffing during his interview with Brian, so they went with it and made it a self-contained bit, which Brian then posted as a special episode. Check that out if you can – just follow the links above. (By the way, I also mentioned the Casa Mirth podcast with Dr. Norman Trousers and River Zambezi, and I also pinged the OnBrand podcast, which isn’t a comedy podcast but it’s about branding, which is my main day job, and host Nick Westergaard had my friend Pat Hanlon on as a guest so there.) Oh, and if you didn’t get a chance to catch the Casa Mirth Christmas Spectacular, you should, if only to hear my stirring introduction. THE JOB INTERVIEW Maybe it's because I just started a new job at the beginning of the year, but I found the video sketch The Job Interview, by our friend John Dredge (host of The John Dredge Nothing To Do With Anything Show podcast) to be pretty clever. THE CLIPS Getting On with James UrbaniakIf you’re a podcast aficionado, chances are that you’ve heard James Urbaniak appearing as a guest on any number of shows out there, including The Thrilling Adventure Hour and Comedy Bang Bang. He’s a very talented vocal artist as well as and actor and a comedian. And he’s had his own podcast for a while. He doesn’t release them regularly – in fact, since 2012, there seem to only be about 21 episodes out there. Each one features him “navigating the darkly comedic recesses of his troubled yet charming mind,” according to his homesite.   80’s Reboot OverdriveOur Associate Producer Tyson Saner stumbled headfirst into something called the Southgate Media Group. It’s a network of podcasts that got going about a year and a half ago, the brainchild of Rob and Martha Southgate. Almost every show on their lineup – and I counted 24 of them – is dedicated to a TV show. There’s also a show about video games and one potpourri crazy roundup of a show called 80’s Reboot Overdrive. That’s where this clip comes from, and it features host Dave talking to Southgate Media’s heads Rob and Martha Southgate, along with their 7-year-old daughter Molly, who co-hosts THREE of the podcasts with her parents. The Big Cat ShowWe haven’t heard from our old pal Lyonheart for a really long time. He had an internet radio show a couple of years ago, then he shut it down and headed out West for a bit, landing in San Jose to take care of some family stuff. But the West Coast didn’t suit him and he went back East once again, to New York this time with his buddy Matt. Hello InternetTyson tossed us a clip this week from Hello Internet, a show I’m not familiar with. It features hosts CGP Grey and Brady Haran. I’m not sure what’s up with the three initials – the CGP Grey thing – but according to their homesite, the two guys kick around YouTube, life, work, and whatever. Grey’s got several videos on YuTube under the title “Grey Explains” and there’s one on the Lord of The Rings, robots, and other interesting subjects. The Kundalini Files ReduxFriends-of-Succotash Davian Dent and Jason McNamara (also known as Jabs from The Dhead Factor podcast), had done a 6-part detective spoof podcast called The Kundalini Files a couple of years ago. Davian has re-cut and re-mastered those shows and put them altogether into something he calls a feature-length show he calls The Kundalini Files Redux. Comedy On VinylI’m going to assume that, if you’re a listener to Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, that you’re a fan of both comedy and podcasts. That combo probably can’t get much better than on a show called Comedy On Vinyl. Normally the comedy nerds on the show, headed up by host Jason Klamm, talk about the greatest comedy vinyl albums of all time. Our associate producer Tyson Saner found an intriguing break from that format with their epi119, featuring guest Jimmy Pardo, host of the Never Not Funny podcast, who brought the chat around to the effect that Richard Lewis’ 1985 TV special “I’m In Pain” had on him. That Would Be MeAuthor Geoff Hoff does a lot of self-help books on writing and other topics, including an e-course on how to start your own podcast. He recently started doing a humor podcast himself, called That Would Be Me. Refreshingly, these are pretty short installments, and the subjects are presented in an observational style, which is a nice break from the glut of pop culture casts that seem to be propagating faster than ever. That's the lineup and the skinny for the first show of Succotash, Season 2. Drop me a line at marc@SuccotashShow.com and let me know what you thought of our first Succotash Clips show. Next we’ll have a Succotash Chats edition, so you can compare the two flavors of Succotash. One way you can help us out as we move into Season 2 is to get up to iTunes so you can rate and review us. You’d be amazed what a couple of sentences and 5 stars can do for our rankings. Neither of which costs you a dime. Welcome to the blog entry counterpart to Episode 69 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. The biggest news for this show in the past  week is that we're now recommended listening by Stitcher Smart Radio! That's right, particularly if you’re a podcaster just starting out and want to get a handle on this baby widecast medium. Just a couple of days ago, Stitcher mentioned that my appearance on the Podcaster 101 show is featured in their “So You Think You Can Podcast” Top Ten Helpful Tips section! I’ve been tweeting this past week (via @SuccotashShow) that Succotash will have a table set up in the Podcast Lab at this year’s Los Angeles Podcast Festival, which is happening in a couple of weeks — October 4 thru 6 in Santa Monica. You can get more information and get tickets at http://LAPodfest.com. Anybody can stop by our table – if we actually get a table – but I will have a Succotash banner and be giving away some cool magnetic buttons I just ordered – they’re like pins without the pin and feature the Succotash yellow and green logo. (they haven't even been delivered yet but, once they're here, I'll post a picture of them...) So do stop by if you’re at the fest. And, if YOU'RE a comedy podcaster, we’ll have our mics set up and I’ll do an interview with you which we’ll feature on the show. Some friends of Succotash are in town this week. In town meaning San Francisco at the San Francisco Improv Festival. And the friends are the cast of ILLUSIONOID!, one of our favorite podcasts. Paul Bates, Lee Smart, and Nug Nahrgang – the best name in podcasting – will be performing on Wednesday night, September 18th, at the Eureka Theater. So, if you’re in the Bay Area, buy tickets and join me in checking these guys out live and in person. LIVE APPEARANCE I’ll actually be performing live and in person a little later this month. Friday, September 27th, I’m going to be part of Marsh Jam, a new improv free-for-all that’s going up at the Marsh Cabaret in Berkeley. I think that’s at 8:30 and you can find out more at TheMarsh.org. HONORARY ASSOCIATE PRODUCER Special thanks again this show to Tyson Saner, whom I've dubbed as our Honorary Associate Producer for providing us with clips to some podcast he's discovered This episode in particular is loaded with Saner clips and it's a pleasure to have those available. THE TEN MOST ACTIVE ON THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Every week (or so) we're tracking the shows on Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcast list that show the most action, either up OR down. Here's who distinguished themselves this week: 16. Bertcast’s Podcast +1229. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher +2945. Jordan, Jesse, GO +3161. Smodcast >> FeAB -2766. The David Feldman Show -1770. Dining With Doug & Karen +2578. The Read -2885. The Insanity Check +2186. The Jack Blood Show +1698. Keith and the Girl Podcast -20 DOUBLE DOSE O' DURST AGAIN With this episode, I think I've finally caught up with the backlog of our Burst O' Durst feature, but only because we're playing one more double header with America's "Raging Moderate" Will Durst. THE LAST OF BOGANWOOD, SEASON 1 We feature the eighth and final chapter of Boganwood, Season 1, this show, along with the last snippet of my interview with this podcast miniseries creator, Jason McNamara. It's a bittersweet end of our having played all the episode. Bitter because it's ending, sweet because we've been keeping you occupied while Jabs (Jason to his mum) has been getting Boganwood, Season TWO underway! Check it out at http://Boganwood.com. THE CLIPS Jordan, Jesse, GO!This podcast moved up 31 spots this past week in the Stitcher Top 100 so that’s a good place to start. This is one of the shows in the Maximum Fun podcast arsenal. And they are about to hit Episode 300, so you know they’ve got a handle on this podcast thing. Featuring Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris co-hosting what they refer to as “a freewheeling comedy podcast about life in your 20’s”. The most recent episode featured a visit with comedian and writer Liz Feldman and they got into talking about a place Jesse takes his 2-year-old. The Insanity CheckThis show, which got into the Top 100 on Stitcher’s Comedy Podcast this week at #85, is hosted by Kriss, Ryce, Dylan and a few other guests here and there. The show focuses on crazy things like working in the corporate world, politics, the entertainment industry and society as a whole. They’ve been dropping shows twice a week – I envy them – and so they recently sailed past 400 episodes. Their latest – Epi408 – is entitled The Can’t U Niggas Troll Convention. Harmontown This past week I reviewed this podcast from Dan Harmon, the creator of NBC’s Community – you know he’s back this season, after leaving last year – and also with Jeff Davis, a great improvisor from Whose Line Is It Anyway. My review is up as part of This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com. It’s a very entertaining show – and they’ve been on for only 2 more episodes than Succotash – maybe there's hope for me yet! Podhouse 90: The Wonderful Pundits of Oz Frank Coniff is a very funny writer and comedian  - he’s currently working on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell - and has come up with a great concept that bends the parameters of podcasting. They’re these full-length musical comedy plays, with the title springboard off early TV’s “Playhouse 90”. Tyson Saner snipped us off a clip from The Wonderful Pundits of Oz, which picks up after the events as we know them from The Wizard of Oz. Great cast, too, with Coniff, Melissa Villasenor, Dave "Gruber" Allen, J. Elvis Weinstein, David Higgens, Laraine Newman, Emo Phillips, Dana Gould, Mark Thompson, Jamie Haddad Tompkins, and Joe Keyes.  Combat Radio We haven’t played anything from our old pal Ethan Dettenmeier over at Combat Radio in awhile, so it was nice to have Tyson send in a clip from a recent show. Ethan had a couple of comedians in – Eric Mark and Justin Rivera – then threw in the author of Why Are You Single? Sonia Everett McKie just to stir the pot… Inverse DeliriumOur buddy, Geoffrey Welchman, over at the Inverse Delirium podcast, shot us in a clip this week – actually, he sent it in a couple of weeks ago but I lost it somehow. So he’s re-sent it in because he realized that the last couple of clip from Inverse Delirium we played didn’t actually have him in them. Here he is now, in a piece about EVPs or Electronic Voice Phenomena. SModcast >> Edumacation If Kevin Smith’s Smodcast brand were in grocery stores, they would have tons of consumer “facings”, as they’re called, because there are so many different flavors. Tyson Saner sent us in a clip from Edumacation, where Kevin gets schooled by someone new every time. This time, it’s Tonight Show writer Andy McElfresh who gives us the straight scoop on something called prosopagnosia, where the person can't identify people by their appearances, even celebrities. Evil Teddy Bear PodcastKorey Epps and Thomas Fine have hosted over 100 epis of their show. The tagline on their homesite reads: “Two film freaks, one podcast and a shitload of movies.” So this is mainly a movie review/tribute/slapfest. The hosts and their guest, Steve Sievers, about their first Kevin Smith movie experiences. That's is for Epi69. It's pretty jam-packed so I hope you enjoy it. See you soon and, while i'm out, would you mind passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

It's been another couple of weeks since I last posted a new epi of Succotash, so I hope you didn't forget about us! We’ve got a bunch of podcast clips in store for you in this – Epi67 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. I really appreciate you sticking around and downloading or streaming our show. The delay was kind of unavoidable – work has been crazy busy PLUS the computer I use for creating the episodes was damaged while I was on vacation. Fortunately (and coincidentally) past-and-future guest as well as friend-of-Succotash Dana Carvey wanted me to help him out with some writing on a project, so I bartered the job out in exchange for a spiffy new Mac to replace Fleegle, the official Succotash computer.  (In memory of the first one, I am also calling the replacement Fleegle. It's not sentimental, it's just that all my files transferred over to the new one and it would be a hassle just to change its name…) Honorary Associate Producer I want to give a big shout out to our friend and avid listener Tyson Saner, who recently has been clipping some comedy podcasts that HE enjoys listening to and then passing the clips along to Succotash. We got a bunch of them from Tyson this show so I think I’m going to make him this episode's honorary associate producer. (It's probably temporary mainly because I think Tyson is about THIS close to launching his own podcast – at which point he won’t have any spare time left to cut clips for our show!) Thank you, Tyson, I really appreciate it. Thanks, Charley! Another friend of the show, Charley Miller, featured an interview that he did with ME back in April on a recent episode of his Random Variety Show podcast. And it wasn’t just an interview – this is a real tribute to our show. He plays a couple of classic Henderson’s Pants spots, played a clip of us clipping RVSP, and he even plugged I Hate People!, the business book I co-wrote a few years ago (which is still available online!) On top of all that wonderfulness, Charley dipped into his 1-year-old son’s college fund and kicked a very generous donation in through our Donate Button on the SuccotashShow.com website. So get up to http://RandomVarietyShow.com or iTunes or Stitcher or the PodGods network and give Charley’s episodes a listen. (You should also do like Charley did and feel free to donate a little bit to help us keep this podcast going!) Those Great Succotash Recipes One of my favorite features of our show is fast becoming the succotash recipes that appear at the very tail end of the show. The original idea came from Jabs at the Dhead Factor and Boganwood podcasts and it was fun to play an actual recipe for succotash after every show – I just grabbed the audio off of YouTube video where people were cooking the stuff. But after doing that for about 6 months, the well was running try. So I’ve been reaching out to some of the more creative comedy podcasters out there and asking them to record recipes. So far we’ve had Chef Eddie Vedder from the Tiny Odd Conversations podcast and Chef Terry with a Cajun recipe from the Don’t Quit Your Daycast podcast. This week’s episode features a recipe provided by Davian Dent over at the Bitter Sound Podcast through his Bitter Sound Cooking Class and Chef Matt Bubbles. Chillpak Hollywood Hour Even though we’ve been down for a couple of weeks, it seems our friends Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness over at the Chillpak Hollywood Hour podcast have been swamped and, although they’ve been very good about putting out their Monday episodes, they’ve been from the set of a new movie they’re producing, directing and acting in called The Ladykillers. As a result, they haven’t been mentioning Succotash, which is fine, but those have been the clips I’ve been playing here – when they mention our show, see? I guess we’ll just call the past couple of weeks a wash. This Week In Comedy Podcasts My latest review on Splitsider.com, for This Week In Comedy Podcasts LAST week, was The Jimmy Shubert Show. Veteran comic and actor, Jimmy Shubert has been around a while but only 2 episodes into the world of podcasting. And I’m going to interview Shubert on the next epi of Succotash, so how about that? Boganwood Chronicles, Cont'd. This show also features Episode 6 of Boganwood, the podcast mini-series out of Australia. Just before that rolls, there's more from an interview I had over Skype with the series' creator, Jason McNamara. Double Dose O' Durst Our Burst O' Durst segments have been piling up so in Epi67 we're running two - one towards the beginning and one in its usual spot near the end of the show. The 10 Most Active Podcasts in The Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcasts Here are the shows on Stitcher that shown the most movement - up OR down in the past week. Simple. 22. TalkS Hit with Eddie Ifft +942. Professor Blastoff +1145. The Dana Gould Hour +6650. Girl On Guy with Aisha Tyler +1755. That American Life -1663. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher -2566. The Black Guy Who Tips Podcast -1570. The David Feldman Show -1491. The Perfect 10 Podcast with Ralphie May & Lahna Turner +45100. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -16 THE CLIPS The Dana Gould HourThe funny and dark, or maybe it’s the darkly funny Dana Gould is back. I thought I was offline for a bit but he’s got me beat by a month. He has a better excuse – and I’m not telling tales out of school because he mentions it right in the opening to The Dana Gould Show – he was going through a divorce. When I saw him early in the summer, it was just getting started but now most of the hysteria is done with and he getting back to finding the funnier things in life. In this clip Dana and two of this episode’s guests – April Richardson and past Succotash guest Matt Weinhold – chat it up about ghosts in the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, which seques quite naturally into a discussion about cocaine. What? The Perfect 10Anyone familiar with Ralphie May’s comedy know that he’s got strong opinions about things. He’s not afraid of expressing them onstage and he’s definitely not afraid to jump into them on his podcast which he co-hosts with his wife, comedian Lahna Turner. It’s called the Perfect 10 and this week it jumped up into the Top 100 on Stitcher at #91, having leaped up 45 places since last week. In this clip, we discover that Ralphie not only doesn’t like wine very much but HATES the movie Sideways, that is all about wine and wine tasting and screwing. This clip precedes a visit that Lahna then makes to take a tour of a winery and to learn a little something about viticulture.  The Bitter SoundThe Bitter Sound podcast out of the UK is often a sort of audio experiment. Host Davian Dent likes bending sound and structure in interesting and – often – disturbing ways. In the spirit of the BBC over there, Davian’s recently concluded his second season of six shows and we have a clip from that last show where a friend has bought him something to commemorate the occasion.  Call Chelsea PerettiHere is the first of the clips submitted by our buddy Tyson Saner. Tyson is not just an avid listener to podcasts but he’s a very supportive voice out there for a lot of shows – he’s constnatly retweeting stuff from not just Succotash but Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Combat Radio and others that he wants people to discover. I love this clip from Call Chelsea Peretti – a show we hadn’t gotten around to featuring yet – as Chelsea has guest Bill Burr on her podcast and you can tell they like mixing it up a bit. Action Science TheaterWe received a clip from Dan Bond, Brian Macken, and Dan Booth from their relatively new sketch-based podcast. Action Science Theatre is a monthly show. The description on their website reads: “Action Science Theatre is a podcast in the style of a radio play, that mixes action, science, comedy and silly voices to create a welcome distraction from real life for 20 minutes or so. It is unquestionably the finest free online audio drama you can get without trying any others.” There’s a little bit of a feel of The Thrilling Adventure Hour, Superego and Illusionoid to the show – at least in the clip we have, but that’s not a bad thing at all. BertcastWe played a clip from the Bertcast – hosted by comedian Bert Kreischer – when he first launched about a year and a half ago. Our honorary associate producer Tyson Saner lets us revisit the Mancave this week when Bert lures Marc Maron out of the WTF garage on The Bertcast to get real about marriage, kids, drinking, as well as hopes and dreams.  Mission Log: A Roddenberry Star Trek PodcastTyson Saner comes through again with Mission Log: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast. It’s a one-of-a-kind thingeroo that I’d never heard of but is pretty interesting, especially if you’re into The Trek. It features Ken Ray and John Campion delving into EVERY episode of EVERY Star Trek TV series, recounting the plotlines and then delving into the character motivations, plot wrinkles and everything in-between. There’s a sense of humor to it, for sure, but this is for the true ST aficionado.  One Dollar BeerOur next clip was sent in by Tommy Kay, one of the hosts of the One Dollar Beer podcast. Other hosts include Frost-T and Anthony Gunn. Tommy’s cover note says, "This is a snippet of our second episode entitled "Purple Lightsabers and White Women". It includes a clip from a segment where one of the hosts reveals some of his list of confessions and secrets that he never told anybody, along with reactions from the other hosts. Thank You." No, no - thank YOU, Tommy, for sending the clip in. Enjoy your first taste of One Dollar Beer… There it is, Epi67 of Succotash, all neatly wrapped up and ready to pass along to your friends! – Marc Hershon

It's not unusual to hear a guest drop by Succotash – podcasters, comedians, actors, etc. – but occasionally I invite some in to be my guest co-host for an episode. We each pull clips from shows we want to share, then we present them to you…and each other, sometimes for the first time. For Epi64, I invited Monica Hamburg, co-host of the Dazed & Convicted podcast from Vancouver, Canada, to spin clips with me. We had a great time! Such a great time that this edition of Succotash clocked in as the longest epi for us ever - a few ticks over TWO hours! That's a lot of clips, and yakkin' and laughs. You might want to listen to the first hour, take a break and digest, then come back for more. BUT if you think you can finish the whole thing in one sitting…you get it for FREE! Monica comes from an acting background and she's also a hotshot internet marketer-for-hire when she's not behind the D&C mics with her co-host, Bill Allman. We get into the history of the show, its previous incarnation as The S&M Rants, and the fact that Monica is definitely a true crime junkie. It's the main focus of her show AND it's the core of three of the five clips she's brought to share. WHAT'S HOT…WE'RE HOT! Here's a big thank you to all of those Succotashians who have been dowloading, raiting and reviewing The Comedy Podcast Podcast up on iTunes! This past week, Succotash got up into the What's Hot section, which really helps with our visibility. (So maybe this isn't the best time to crank out a 2-hour epic episode. On the other hand, maybe it's JUST the thing. I don't think anyone knows for sure…) THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Here’s the rundown on the latest Top 10 Most Active Shows On The Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List: 37. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher +3260. This Week In Blackness Radio +4763. Dining With Doug & Karen +3465. Cashing In With TJ Miller +3666. Keith & The Girl comedy talk show +1478. Superego +5080. Jim Florentine’s ‘Metal Comedy Midgets’ -1684. Sex Squad -1285. The Morning Stream +2391. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -17 SPECIAL FEATURES In addition to a whole lot of clips, we have our Burst O' Durst with comedian Will Durst, a song by Ren Faire sensation Hob The Troll, a promo for Mount Us More, the long-awaited music CD from Shunt McGuppin and The Journeymen (better known as the guys from Superego), a commercial for the new Henderson's Poncho Pants, and episode 3 of Boganwood, the Australian podcast mini-series along with a brief lead in chat with creator Jason McNamara. THE CLIPS Dazed & ConvictedOur guest co-host Monica Hamburg provides a clip from her recent Epi100. It's a sketch performed by co-host Bill Allman, Malox, and herself, revolving around a crime in Vancouver that revolved around - somehow - a bag of chips. Dining With Doug & Karen Normally the Karen in the title is comedian Karen Anderson. But she’s on “special assignment” as co-host Doug Benson puts it. So filling in is comedian Karen Kilgariff. Their guest comedian is Dave Anthony from Walking The Room and their guest chef is Shanna Lynn Milazzo from The Belmont in LA. This clip is less than 5 minutes but covers a range of topics – food, kids, pot, and a new sponsor whose viral video spurred Karen’s condition called Don’tClickOnIt-Itis. Distorted ViewA big favorite of our guest co-host, this show proclaims on its site: “The Distorted View Show is a daily comedy podcast hosted by Tim Henson. Every weekday he scours the darkest corners of the web in search of the truly bizarre. He then presents his finds to you, complete with unique (read: crass, vulgar, childish, and inappropriate) commentary. For a half hour each day, sit back and witness this audiophonic trainwreck. After listening, you'll feel much better about your own life.”  Enjoy! HobcastWe don't often play clips from the same show two weeks in a row. (Well, except for our running feature on Boganwood…) But last week, Hob The Troll (Steve Doccerson) sent us the wrong clip, which we then incorrectly identified. So we agreed to play the intended clip, featuring guest King John (The Thrilling Adventure Hour's Mark Gagliardi). It's a podcast. He's a troll. What more do you need to know? The Bi-Quarterly Women’s ClubThe hosts (and their tech guy) are four of the ugliest women I've seen, but that could be because they're dudes: Chris Wilding, Slako, Dylan, and Max. In this clip, they’re at the court, at the preliminary inquiry of “alleged” Canadian serial killer Luka Magnotta. Luka Magnotta fainted during the hearing. So when the trial paused for a bit, the BQWB used the break to interview people supporting not the victim, but the killer.  Kickin’ It Mary Lynn StyleHosted by comedian and actress Mary Lynn Rajskub who you should recognize from TV's 24 and also The Larry Sanders Show, has her own p'cast over on Nerdist. (Lucky Nerdist!) One guest a recent episode was actress Casey Wilson, who has a new movie coming out and who was recently on the ABC series Happy Endings. They get deep-ish into the subject of auditioning.  The New York City Crime Report with Pat DixonHosted by comedian Pat Dixon, along with producer Marcus Parks and guest Dave Rosinsky. As their website proclaims: “Crime might be down, but it sure isn’t out. This is the only podcast that gives you all the information on New York City crime, court and killers at large.” Lost Moon RadioLost Moon Radio features the sketch comedy group of the same name, out of Los Angeles. I played a clip from one of their first episodes and, I’m happy to report, they’re still funny! In this clip from Episode 8 entitled Hauntings, we catch up with a group of young campers on their closing night bonfire. Sarcastic Voyage The Sarcastic Voyage podcast is a biweekly endeavor by Ron “AAlgar” Watt, with Matt Rowbotham and a supporting cast of voice actors and contributing writers. It is largely comprised of prepared material (sketch comedy and comedic serials), which are linked by short “host segments." The clip Monica shares with us features the conversation between a couple of servants working the never-ending party at Jabba The Hutt's hideout. RISK!Kevin Allison hosts the weekly storytelling podcast “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public." Guest Julie Threlkeld tells the story of “Mom and the Bomb”. She begins by talking about the difficulty of coming as a teen as a lesbian to her mom, who didn’t approve (“You’re having sex with a woman?!”) Later on that same life, things got weird. If you like your podcasts long, then THIS is episode of Succotash you're not going to want to miss! We're happy you're here and we'd love to hear from you! You can write me at marc@SuccotashShow.com. You can leave comment on our Succotash Show page on Facebook. You can also call out Succotash Hotline: (818) 921-7212. Until next time, please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

We've got a bunch of clips in Epi40, the longest episode of Succotash yet! Yes, I said "we", because I'm joined by special guest co-host Jabs (aka Jason McNamara) all the way from Canberra, Australia, through the magic of Skype. Jabs is the main man behind The DHead Factor and invited me to share the hosting duties several months ago on his show, so I figured it was high time to return the favor. Wasn't sure how it was going to come together, given the time difference, but Jabs is on holiday down under so he was kindly enough to give up part of a Monday morning at his end. He really serves as a true co-host in this installment - I didn't really get a chance to interview him about his podcast or his life or anything. So if you're hoping to learn more about Jabs the man, please click right over to his podcast and start filling your ears. We split the job of pulling clips for this show, which allowed us to surprise each other with new discoveries. (And since we both enjoy yakking so much, the running time on this episode is over an hour and a half.) It was great having Jabs on the show, and that's not just because he's announced that he's proclaimed December 4th to be Succotash Day! That's right - an international observance of this very podcast! We chat about it during the episode and you can be SURE I'll be talking more about it as the blessed event approaches. T-SHIRT WINNER In the previous episode with my interview with Andy Bumatai, I offered to give away an old t-shirt of Andy's from the Crack Up Thursdayz one nighter comedy gig in Hawaii to someone who could tell me the distance in miles between San Francisco and Honolulu. I had a number of people email in with the mileage — 2387 — and then randomly drew Esben Borsting's name from the correct entries. So I'll be sending the t-shirt his way...back to Honolulu. Thanks to everyone who entered. FUNCTIONAL NERDS Maybe I don't talk about myself enough on THIS show but I can't shut up about me when I guest on Epi126 of the Functional Nerds podcast. Hosts John Anealio (who was a guest on Succotash back in Epi33) and Patrick Hester made me feel welcome and the time flew by. At least for me. Might be different for you. Click over and give a listen... B & A Alba Lewis and Thomas Moore of The Brit & The American podcast swept through San Francisco on a roundabout journey to Peru, stopping just long enough to tuck into a Chinese dinner and have some good conversation with yours truly. Thanks for the eats, kids, bon voyage, and I'll be putting up some or all of our chat in the near future. THE CLIPS Let's do this thing… The DHead FactorThe usual haunt for our guest co-host Jabs, The DHead Factor is also occasionally co-manned by #FUJosh and others, all the way from Canberra, Australia. Random news, lively chat, and more. Royal & DoodallIn a classic R&D clip chosen by Jabs, Royal & Doodall pull off a dramatic send-up in which they pay homage/skewer a number of their fellow podcasters. Including US. Check it. This Week With Larry MillerComedian Larry Miller suffered a head injury about a year ago and his podcast over on Adam Carolla’s ACE Broadcasting System has been playing reruns ever since. Larry's been on the mend and fronts a recent repeat episode with this message to his fans… The Christopher Titus PodcastI've always enjoyed the rambunctious energy of comic Christopher Titus – even more so now that the sound quality of his podcast is coming together. This episode's a treat, seeing as it also features freind-of-Succotash Kelly Carlin. Pissed Off ManJabs has brought along a clip from a podcast that's a favorite of both of ours - The Pissed Off Man, featuring Gavin, aka Gee from Belfast's Gee & Jay Show. Here our mate's gotten all pissy about eating our at restaurants. Not because of the food. Because of the people. GaragecastIs anybody as incensed about the Red Dawn remake as Jake and Bryan? I don't think so. Give a listen to the Garagecast podcast, why don't you? Phil Hendrie PodcastI think the best way to encapsulate our inclusion of a clip from the Phil Hendrie Podcast is to run my review of same which ran last week in This Week In Comedy Podcast over on Spiltsider.com: Good things DO come to those who wait! Years ago, living in Northern California, my only reliable access to Phil Hendrie’s KFI radio show out of Los Angeles was the occasional CDs of the show my friend Matt would send me. And any time I was in the southland, I’d gobble up as much Hendrie as my ears would hold. Hendrie created some of the most original and hilarious programming to be found on radio. NOW he’s making hours and hours of past moments available via his daily podcast. Dr. Jim Sadler’s his guest in this epi, and he’s giving hints on how to get people to move along that are blocking your way in the fast lane on the freeway. “Get right up on their bumper and highbeam ‘em!” urges the doc. “Nobody ever gets mad. In fact, they appreciate you letting them know they’re going too slow.” And if that pokey driver ahead of you is handicapped? “Four short blasts of the horn lets them know you’re back there,” adds Sadler. No one messes with me – I was an all-star wrestler and one look of my well-muscled arm resting on the windowtells folks I mean business.” The people who call into the show are increasingly outraged the more outlanding Sadler gets and even Hendrie cautions him about going to far. Spoiler Alert: Hendrie IS Dr. Jim. And he’s even one of the outraged callers. But the other callers often don’t get the gag…and neither will you until you hear a few episodes and get hip to Hendrie. Mental PoisonBill and the rest of the East Coast crew of Mental Poison made it safely through Hurricane Sandy a couple of weeks ago. Now they just need to survive more fantastically lame-brained marketing ideas from Brian… The BugleThis clip is a slice of the well-crafted and droll wrap-up of the USA’s presidential election, seen through the British filter provided by hosts John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman. We've played a few clips from The Bugle before, and we'll continue to play samples of this great show until you finally relent and subscribe to it! TOFOPThirty Odd Feet Of Podcast is a show I've not heard before, although I did catch a few minutes of co-host Wil Anderson at last month's first ever Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Highly recommended by Jabs, Wil's an Aussie stand-up who's at the top of the pile, while his partner-in-podcasting Charlie Clausen just landed a TV gig that's put their show on hiatus. UnkemptDoes a podcaster shit in the woods? The last time we featured a clip from Unkempt, one of them had, and left it wrapped in a groddy towel. Let's see what Mike & Matt have in store this time around… Burst O’ DurstOur political correspondent Will Durst takes a side trip into Thanksgiving Town. Happy Thanksgiving to our American audience - that would be Happy Thursday to the rest of you. And what an appropriate time for me to urge you to please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

April 18, 2011 - Justice League: Generation Lost wraps up its year long bi-weekly story that had many readers calling the best Justice League book on the market. We talk to writer Judd Winick about the experience of writing the series as a whole, the challenges of writing a book tied so closely to others, plotting for multiple artists, and the fun of writing a villainess Maxwell Lord. And will Winick ever write another bi-weekly series?
