Welcome back to another episode of Tank Talks! This week, Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo dive deep into the economic and innovation headlines shaping Canada's future, from the shocking collapse in domestic VC funding to Bell's billion-dollar bet on AI infrastructure, and Mark Carney's latest power move that might just redefine Canadian politics.* Is Canada's startup ecosystem on life support?* What Bell's AI supercluster plan means for data sovereignty and why it might be too small, too late.* Mark Carney's political chess game: A shift to the economic right?* Jim Balsillie's warning about crypto, open banking, and the end of Canadian monetary independence. This is one episode where politics, venture capital, and emerging tech collide. Let's dive in.Vancouver's Web Summit Debut: A Promising Start, But Room to Grow (00:00:42)Matt shares his experience from Web Summit Vancouver, highlighting a surprisingly dense tech scene and global founders living in B.C., but the event suffered from a lack of promotion and branding blunders.John's take: Good signs of energy on the West Coast, but Vancouver still needs to establish itself as a recurring VC destination.Canada's VC Crisis: A System on the Brink (00:04:30)BDC and CVCA reports reveal domestic early-stage VC activity has plummeted to a five-year low. U.S. capital, once Canada's cushion, is drying up too.John's take: The system is at a critical point. Without a strong local VC backbone, Canada risks losing its tech future. The warning signs are clear and urgent.Risk-Off Era: Are VCs Getting Too Cautious? (00:08:14)Fundraising is down, LPs are nervous, and timelines are stretching. Despite great founders, Canadian VCs are playing defense, not offense.John's take: It's fear, not fundamentals. This is the exact moment when bold investing should happen. But anxiety from capital pools is paralyzing the ecosystem.Bell's AI Supercluster Gamble: Bold or Too Small? (00:12:40)Bell Canada plans six new AI data centers, but can they compete with the U.S.'s Stargate megaproject?John's take: We're betting small while others bet global. Sovereignty is good, but if we're not exporting Canadian tech to the world, we're falling behind.Jim Balsillie's Crypto Challenge: Canada Must Move or Be Left Behind (00:16:08)Balsillie urges the government to adopt open banking and stablecoins now or risk being sidelined in the new global financial order.John's take: Canada was ahead in crypto once. If we don't act now, we'll lose our influence over the next generation of monetary infrastructure.Mark Carney's First Power Move: Is the Economic Right Back in Style? (00:18:51)Carney appoints Marc-André Blanchard, ex-UN ambassador and CDPQ executive, as chief of staff. It's a clear signal he means business.John's take: This is a big-league move. Blanchard's background shows Carney is building a serious, economically focused leadership team.VC Fund Stakes on Sale: Crisis or Opportunity? (00:21:05)LPs like Yale and Harvard are dumping VC fund positions at steep discounts. Secondary market activity is exploding.John's take: It's concerning, but also an opportunity. Discounts of 60%+ could generate strong returns. Still, the pullback from emerging managers could choke off future innovation. If you're a founder, investor, or policymaker, this is essential listening. Canada is at an inflection point, and this episode helps you understand the stakes.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. Jim Balsillie: ‘Canada's Problem Isn't Trump. Canada's Problem Is Canada'

In the chaotic early months of his second term, Donald Trump has attacked the Canadian economy and mused about turning Canada into the “51st state.” Now, after decades of close allyship with the U.S., our relationship with America has suddenly become fraught. Which means that Canadians are now starting to ask what a more sovereign Canada might look like – a question Jim Balsillie has been thinking about for 30 years. Balsillie is the former co-CEO of Research in Motion, the company that developed the Blackberry, and is one of the most successful business people in Canada. He's also one of the patriotic, which makes his recent criticism of our country that much more meaningful. As Balsillie has pointed out, our GDP per capita is currently about 70% of what it is in the U.S., our productivity growth has been abysmal for years, and our high cost of living means that 1 in 4 Canadians are now food insecure. But, according to Balsillie, none of this can be blamed on Trump. He thinks that over the last thirty years we've clung to an outdated economic model and have allowed our politics to be captured by corporate interests. So, with less than a week to go before the federal election, I thought it was the perfect time to sit down with Jim and ask him how we might build a stronger, more sovereign Canada.Mentioned:“Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS),” The World Trade Organization“Reinforcing Canada's security and sovereignty in the Arctic,” Prime Minister of Canada“Ontario Welcomes Siemens' $150 Million Investment to Establish New Technology Centre in Oakville,” news release from the Government of OntarioFurther Reading:“We are all economic nationalists now,” by Jim Balsillie (National Post)

The writer and podcaster Gus Lanzetta returns to the podcast from São Paulo to give our listeners an update on life in Brazil since their Supreme Court banned X: The Everything App from access to the country, and we thought we would pair this with a movie about a revolutionary communication tool that was suddenly not important anymore: Matt Johnson's 2023 comedy-drama BlackBerry. BlackBerry is that rare Canadian movie that had a worldwide impact; based loosely on a true story, it chronicles the boom and bust of the tech firm Research in Motion based out of Waterloo Ontario, and their “angel investor” Jim Balsillie who scaled the small company up to a global powerhouse with 20 billion in sales annually with their invention of the BlackBerry smartphone, only to crash out years later when the iPhone changed the marketplace once again. Gus and I talk about the recent boom of movies dramatizing the origin stories of brands and what makes BlackBerry stand out from the rest, what this film has to say about being a Canadian, Glenn Howerton's terrific performance as the hotheaded Balsillie, and how Johnson pushes the limits of copyright law and the Fair Use exception to tell this story with unlicensed clips and logos. And Gus tells us all about life in Brazil now that Elon's latest “jogada de mestre” has led to a mass exodus of Brazilians over to Bluesky and what led up to his idiotic war against the Brazilian Supreme Court that has further jeopardized the company!

On this week's Richard Crouse Show: It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when we were not tethered to our smart phones. A new film, “BlackBerry,” starring Jay Baruchel and Matt Johnson, and now playing in theatres, vividly recreates the scrappy story of friendship, betrayal and hubris that began our obsession with our phones. Today, we going to focus on that story, courtesy of the film BlackBerry, which opens in theatres on May 12. There was a time when the Canadian made, odd little phone, with a QWERTY keyboard, encrypted messaging and low data cost, was a status symbol, used by some of the world' most powerful people. In the hands of everyone from President Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake to Katy Perry and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the phones helped the world communicate in a whole new way. They were the original smart phones, which makes their Canadian creators Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, visionaries, the men who gave us the future. Recently I sat down with BlackBerry co-writer, co-star and director Matt Johnson, and Jay Baruchel who stars as the awkward genius behind the BlackBerry tech, Mike Lazaridis. Matt is the director of The Dirties, which won Best Narrative Feature at the Slamdance Film Festival, Operation Avalanche, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and mockumentary television series Nirvanna the Band the Show. You know Jay from his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and for roles in Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, The Trotsky, Fanboys, She's Out of My League, Goon, This Is the End, and the action-fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. You can also see him as the host of We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel) on Crave. BlackBerry is the story of the company Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie, the hotheaded businessman, played by Glenn Howerton, who was there for the rise and fall of the iconic company. “BlackBerry” isn't just a business story or the story of innovation. Instead, it is an underdog tale that emphasizes the human foibles that led to RIM's downfall, not just the financial ones. We began the interview with the idea of talking about the film, but were soon sidetracked by a discussion inspired by the lessons learned from the film, about what it means to be Canadian, why we don't celebrate our own stories and much more. Stay tuned, it often doesn't sound like an interview as much as a conversation we might have had over a drink or two. Like the movie we were supposed to concentrate on, before the conversation took a few left turns, the interview is passionate, patriotic, funny and not quite what you might expect.

In hilarious fashion, BlackBerry chronicles the rise and sharp decline of the world's first smartphone. We down with writer-director and star Matt Johnson while he was attending the UK premiere at Glasgow Film Festival to discuss the film. ----more---- Jay Baruchel plays the naive inventor of the BlackBerry, Mike Lazaridis; Only Sunny in Philadelphia's Glenn Howerton is fantastic at Jim Balsillie, the shark-like businessman who helps Mike sell BlackBerry to the world; and Johnson himself plays Doug Fregin, the vest-wearing tech bro who started the company with Lazaridis but would rather have a good time than be in business. The film is a delight, and a world away from tragic moral tales like The Social Network or Jobs. Johnson's approach is less ostentatious, bringing these tech giants down to a human level and telling a story full of wit and pathos.  Glasgow Film Festival runs 1-12 March, get full details and tickets at glasgowfilm.org TIMESTAMPS: Glasgow, Limmy and deep-fried pizza (1:22) Why make a film about the deeply uncool BlackBerry (3:38) Casting Always Sunny's Glenn Howerton (7:47) The film's 'fly-on-the-wall' style (10:30) Borrowing from Robert Altman (14:12) Making an honest story about capitalism (14:55) Johnson's similarity to all three main characters (18:33) If you like The Cineskinny, tell your pals! The gang is once again recording live from the Pacific Coliseum during a huge hockey weekend in Vancouver. Dave, Sheila and Ryan sit down and chat about what's happening this week in the world of hockey and are joined by a very special guest. One of the Vancouver Canucks 2013 1st round draft picks (24th) Hunter Shinkaruk chats with Ryan to start the show as he caught him outside the Medicine Hat Tigers dressing room before his big game against the Giants Friday night.   Hunter talks about the pressure and expectations playing in Vancouver that is in store for him. We also chat about Trevor Linden and dentistry. The gang chats about the continuously struggling Edmonton Oilers, new brass in Buffalo and if Steven Stamkos is joining Team Canada this February at Sochi. Ryan gives his first installment of 'LIVE From the heartland' in which he gives a quick run down of all the things happening with the team nobody cares about, the St. Louis Blues. Later in the show, we have our first 'Mystery Box' segment in which everyone came to the show with a secret topic to talk about. Dave talks about Jim Balsillie ruining Blackberry AND almost ruining Canada's chances of a new NHL team.  Ryan discusses the WHA restart in 2004 during the NHL lockout that fell absolutely flat and Sheila was unable to think about a topic, but discusses her ongoing love and appreciation for Big 44 Todd Bertuzzi. All this and more on this week's Pucks on net! Enjoy everybody
