Using CW on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 31st of July 2025 Last week was very much a repeat performance of the week before. We had relatively calm geomagnetic conditions and few solar flares to contend with. The only flares were minor C-class events. The Kp index never got above 3, and the solar flux index was in the 140s to 150s. The F2-layer maximum usable frequency over a 3,000km path rose to 21MHz but didn't get much higher, which is normal for the summer period. A team from Norfolk Amateur Radio Club was active as GM0FRT/P from the Shetland Islands for the IOTA contest. They were workable from JO02NN on 14 and 21MHz for much of the contest period. The distance to Shetland from central UK is about 887km, or 551 miles. Given the distance involved, the 21MHz openings were probably Sporadic-E, but they were loud for hours on end. Other DX worked last week included T30TTT from Western Kiribati on the 10m band using FT8 over the North Pole. 9M8A from East Malaysia was also on the 10m band using FT8. XW4KV from Laos was on the 12m band operating FT8. 3B9SP on Rodriguez Island put in an appearance on the 17 and 12m bands using FT8. The station was also worked using CW on the 40, 30, 20 and 15m bands. That's not a bad haul for summer DX and if the Kp index can stay low, we could get similar next week. Speaking of which, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will be in the range of 150 to 160 next week. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the period of the 7th to the 14th of August, with a maximum predicted Kp index of 5. And finally, there is talk of a possible large sunspot group on the far side of the Sun. The region in question belongs to a cluster of spots, including AR 4136, 4139 and 4143, last seen earlier this month. Solar rotation will carry what remains of these regions back into view next week. So, keep an eye on solarham.com for up-to-date details. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The slightly unsettled theme to the weather will remain into next week, although there are signs that high pressure will try to return in the middle of the week for a time. Models disagree on details, with some bringing another thundery low into the south later. This means that there will be some Tropo at times and, in high summer, this tends to be generally strongest around the coasts. To benefit from these conditions inland it's better to wait for night cooling. As usual with thundery weather, it's a good chance to listen for rain scatter on the GHz bands. Another mode that still deserves attention is meteor scatter. Look out for the early stirrings of the August Perseids, which peak around the 12th and 13th of the month. Surprisingly, Aurora is staying in the limelight. Periodic alerts are suggesting it's worth turning your VHF beams north if you notice any signs of fluttery HF signals or discover the Kp index has risen to 5 or above. If auroral activity appears on the 10 or 6m bands, then check the higher bands as the event develops. Sporadic-E is now in its occasional phase as we move into August. It is less common than in June, but still worth considering. Check the usual cluster maps and Propquest to see how the day is unfolding. Moon declination is negative, falling to a minimum on Tuesday, the 5th. So, Moon windows and peak elevation will also decline. Path losses reached maximum at apogee on the 1st of August, so are starting to fall again. 144MHz sky noise starts the coming week moderately, but will rise to high levels by Monday. It will reach over 300 Kelvin by Tuesday evening before falling back. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Using CW and SSB on the 160 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. Dutch stations send their province. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 1st of February 2024 We had another week of relatively calm geomagnetic conditions with a maximum Kp index of three. The solar flux index declined from 172 on the 24th to 135 on the 30th. Nevertheless, that is still enough to support propagation on the 10m band, with the maximum usable frequency over a 3,000km path generally being between 29 and 36MHz during daylight. Solar activity has been at low levels with only minor C-class flares and one M-class flare detected. Active region 3559 is now located behind the west limb of the Sun and out of direct view. New active region 3567 in the northeast quadrant is showing the most promise as it appears to be in a growth phase. There is currently a 25% chance of a moderate M-class flare, according to the latest NOAA and SWPC update. Earlier in the week, we had a period of moderate S2-level radiation storming. Proton levels streaming past Earth, following a solar flare early on Monday morning, increased but this has now declined. A minor coronal hole also became Earth-facing on the 2nd of February, so we may still expect some disruption today, Sunday the 4th. The 10m band is still romping along, with beacons along the eastern seaboard of the USA coming alive in the afternoon. This weekend, the 3rd and 4th, sees the 10-10 International Winter SSB Contest, so there should be plenty of stations to work on 28MHz. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index may rise again, perhaps to 150 today Sunday 4th, and up to 165 a week later. We may have unsettled geomagnetic conditions on the 5th and 6th, with the Kp index predicted to rise to three. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO This week, ending the 4th of February, saw high pressure to the south of Britain and fronts over northern areas. For some stations in the southern half of the country, there could be useful Tropo conditions for the 432MHz Affiliated Societies Contest taking place today, the 4th. Unfortunately, the frontal activity over the north will move south on Tuesday to remove any chance of these better conditions lasting into the 144MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday the 6th of February. The period from mid-week onwards looks dominated by low pressure with rain or showers and generally flat VHF and UHF prospects unless you are set up for rain scatter. Other propagation modes like meteor scatter, aurora or Sporadic-E seem likely to remain in the background for the coming week. For EME operators, moon declination is negative and falling to a minimum on Tuesday the 6th. Path losses are also decreasing since their maximum at apogee on Monday the 29th. But with the low peak moon elevations, only eight degrees on Tuesday, moon windows will be short. 144MHz sky noise is moderate to very high all week going over 3100 Kelvin on Tuesday the 6th. Friday and Saturday see the moon and sun very close together, so Sun noise in antenna beamwidths will be an issue. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Support the show

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Henry Giroux is an American and Canadian Scholar and one of the founding theorists of Critical Pedagogy. He was named one of the top fifty educational thinkers of the modern period. He has published more than 70 books and 500 papers as well as hundreds of chapters in other books. Now for our feature story: Rhode Island has fully vaccinated 59.9% of our population as of Sunday. 1.3M doses have been administered so far and each day helps make things a little safer for our residents. 65% of Rhode Island has had at least one dose, but the state is still not at the all-important 70% mark. A new drive-through vaccination site opened Saturday at the Wickford Junction train station in North Kingstown. The site is open to Rhode Islanders as well as out-of-state residents. Appointments are recommended but not required. Since the site is a drive-through, individuals must have a car and cannot walk in. The clinic will operate on Saturdays going forward. Gov. Dan McKee said drive-through sites are just one of several tactics being used to deliver vaccines to as many people as possible. “It takes many different approaches to drive our vaccination numbers across every age band,” McKee said. For more about the coronavirus pandemic and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Sea Bags in Watch Hill. They're looking for a part-time retail sales associate ideally with 2 years of retail experience and customer service. Pay depends on experience.. If you'd like to learn more or apply, you can do so at the link in our episode description: https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=2742aded61e027db&advn=8743562717035863 Today we're remembering the life of Carmela Marie DeGroff, beloved mother and sister, who passed away peacefully on July 4th. Carmela was born in Westerly and graduated from Westerly High school. She worked at Moore's Mill during the war producing gun belts. She also attended dances and worked at the Charlestown Naval Airbase and Quonset Point where she met her husband Leo who was a pilot in the U.S. Navy. They married in May of 1946 and Carmela followed her husband with their growing family to locations all over the world where Leo was stationed. She and her husband were in the Marshall Islands where she was proud to serve as a volunteer Grey Lady assisting with the wounded who came through during the Korean War. She also lived in Pensacola, FL, San Diego CA, Indianapolis, IN, Kenitra, Morocco and finally Rota, Spain. Her husband retired from the Navy in 1965 and the family returned to Westerly. Carmela worked as a teller at the Industrial National Bank and later at the Washington Trust Bank. She then went to work at Dick's Package Store, owned by her brother, Dick, for many years until she retired. When Carmela's mother, Mary passed away in 1977, Carmela and her husband moved into her family home which her father built in the early 1930's to take care of her father. She cared for him for many years until he passed away at the age of 97. Carmela was a member of the Lions Club Women's Auxiliary as well as the Calabrese Club. She actively participated in organizing her class reunions for many years. She is survived by her three children, her brother, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Carmela's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more!
