Series 3, Episode 3. Trigger Warning - This episode contains a conversation about Sexual Assault. In this episode, we have the profound honour of sharing Denise Conway's story—a narrative she courageously chose to tell through us. The term "brave" is frequently used, but it unequivocally applies to Denise in every sense. Her bravery shines through in her decision to report her sexual assault, navigating the deeply challenging process of examinations, inquiries, and a legal trial. It's seen in her resilience to live life with the fullest, as a proud mother, a loving sister and daughter, happily married to a man she sees as a blessing. Denise's bravery is once again evident as she decides to divulge the harrowing details of her experience. Her aim is to cast a light on the struggles faced by sexual assault survivors and offer solace to those who have felt voiceless. This conversation serves as a reminder of the strength found in speaking out and the solace in shared experiences. Denise's story is a beacon of hope and resilience, encouraging a dialogue that fosters understanding, healing, and change. Please like, subscribe and share this episode with someone who may need to hear it.Helpful links: Instagram: @wheredoigofromherepodcastWebsite: Where Do I Go From Here Hosted on Acast. Hey Lifers,This episode was such a joy. Sarah Davidson is known as a 'funtrepreneur" (fun entrepreneur) for giving up her very successful career path in law to start her own business and find what brings her joy. Sarah speaks with incredible insight into the way that we view success and how that aligns (or doesn't) with happiness. Something a lot of us question is whether we could be feeling a bigger sense of purpose if we were doing something else, and also when to take that lunge and when not to; a cost-benefit analysis of your work-life happiness. Another really interesting part of Sarah's story is that she was adopted at 5 months old from an orphanage in Korea. Sarah has found a different type of curiosity around her identity now that she is pregnant and will have a family member reflect her physical traits for the first time. We speak about some of the questions that adoptees face and have themselves. If you'd like to follow along with Sarah's story, or get her podcast, books etc you can find her here! Being happy, is surely what most of us want, right? We're all on our own journeys to achieve it, but is there a real science behind it that we could all follow? That's what we discuss with Paul a behavioural scientist at LSE, who has been called the Professor of Happiness having written books including Happiness by Design” and “Happy Ever After”. Paul's work focuses on the measurement of happiness, its causes and consequences and the implications for public policy. He was appointed Chief Academic Advisor to the UK Government Economic Service on Economic appraisal aka he advises governments on behavioural science and wrote the questions that are being used to monitor happiness in the UK. We explore how finding the one, having more money, education and career success is in fact not the route to happiness and why. How single, childfree women are happiest and actually how it is the balance of purpose and pleasure is of utmost importance, when it comes to happiness. Topics we cover: What is happiness? How is it measured? Is happiness a choice? Social Narratives Is happiness subjective? Four common myths of happiness Past experiences Purpose vs pleasure How can we design our environment to impact happiness? How can we retrain our mindset around happiness? What does LWBW mean to Paul? Greg often says, “Tell me your habits and I'll tell you your future.” Habits are the MOST important thing to determining the outcomes and happiness of your life. Habits will make or break your mental, emotional, spiritual, social, physical, family, and financial life. Where you are right now — and the quality and happiness of your life — is a DIRECT result of the habits you have had to this point. Where you want to go, who you want to become, and what you want to do, will be the DIRECT result of the habits you cultivate or break today. And yet, this is something that is not even taught to children, teens, or young adults anytime during their school years. It is something that few adults even understand. Instead, we're taught to sacrifice our habits — or to develop bad habits — in the name of grades, tests, or graduation. This is a major contributing factor to the mental health and obesity crises we're seeing in the world today. This is despite the research that shows there is NO correlation between academic success and life happiness and success. Let's change that. Listen now to learn what the habits are for a successful life and how to develop and cultivate them intentionally in your own life and that of your children. One of the things that Brandy loves the most about this work is that every ailment truly does have a powerful message in it that can help each person gain insights and clarity as to the most important things that we need to really change in our lives… and when we take this information at apply, it can really up-level our lives. And that's exactly what our volunteer Natalie did. She is a badass who took the information that the pain in her body was giving her AND took real action steps to make a change and began implementing it in her life. From that, she was able to: * Have several epiphanies * Notice some things she had been overlooking (of course, that is the way the subconscious/unconscious mind works) * Began implementing changes, and she started seeing results in multiple areas of her life. * Feel happier, even closer to her husband, more productive, improve the connection with her boss … and more. She is beautiful and empowering AND has only just begun! It's still new, and she is still working on implementing the changes, but it is so impressive. That said, Brandy's hope from this podcast is that you will piggyback on the insights that Natalie received and use them to help you continue to up-level your own life. In this episode, there are both internal (emotional/energetic) shifts for Natalie and also action steps that she took. It's a powerful combination. In this episode, we discuss the quote, “Stop waiting for Friday, for summer, for someone to fall in love with you, for life. Happiness is achieved when you stop waiting for it and make the most of the moment you are in now.” We believe in being happy right now where you are at in your life. Life is not about the destination, it's about the journey it takes to get there. It's about all the small things that lead up to the big things. Listen to episode 507 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Fine Tuning the Vibration of Your Life. edited and adapted from Love’s Way by Orison Swett Marden. Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Welcome to the Inspirational Living podcast. If this podcast has inspired you, or helped you in any way, please do let me know by leaving us a positive review at the iTunes store or on Google Play. I always love hearing how this podcast has positively impacted your life. Thank you. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from Love’s Way by Orison Swett Marden, published in 1918. Every life is a vibration, and the quality of our lives is determined by the quality and the rate of our vibrations. Harmonious vibrations mean health, happiness, efficiency, success. Discordant vibrations mean strangulation, discord, thwarted ambition, a wrecked career. If we live in the midst of discordant vibrations which are antagonistic to one another, life will be whittled away at a terrific rate. If, on the other hand, we keep ourselves in tune with the infinite harmonies, we shall preserve the harmonious action of our brain, our nerves, our mental and physical being — and this harmony will heal, will increase our power, success, and happiness.
Aj ek alg si bechani si hai.. Pata nhi kon sahi kon galat... We often get stuck between people and cannot decide who is right who is wrong. No matter how much people love you, what decision they think is right for you, you should always choose what you feel right. Because we have to become selfish, we have to think for our self, as people will be with you but 100% only you could be with yourself. In today’s episode I talk about Aristotle and his idea of Eudaimonia. I talk about the difference between happiness and eudaimonia. I also try to give a little bit of perspective on what it takes to be fully fulfilled in this life and if it is even possible for us mere humans.

Sometimes, you have the joy of meeting with someone you totally click with: Sam [@ssssamanthaa] is one of those joyous people for me. We 'met' on IG last summer, I proposed [we'll get into that] & as she was in London for a couple of days this Feb, all dreams came true when she said yes to my podcast invitation. Sam basically grew into adulthood online - having started her IG & YT age 19. She somewhat knowingly saw the potential of IG, and within a year of dedication to social media, had amassed one million followers. We talk about the ups and downs of the industry, her life and role within it, the importance of knowing what keeps you sane...and a little progress on our upcoming wedding. She's a true gem.
Tragedy, Unhappiness and Burnout This week I read an article about a 27-year old young woman who hanged herself in her New York apartment. She left her mother apology notes online and in her apartment that read she “felt absolutely nothing during what should have been the happiest and darkest times in my life.” The notes continue, “I realize I am undeserving of thinking this way because I truly have a great life on paper. I’m fortunate to eat meals most can only imagine. I often travel freely without restriction… However all these facets seem trivial to me…” And she writes, “It’s the ultimate first world problem, I get it. I often felt detached while in a room full of my favorite people…” In my blog a couple of weeks ago, Millennials: Pursuing Happiness and Avoiding Burnout, I talked about an article by Anne Helen Petersen that describes how millennials are feeling not just exhausted, but burned out chasing all the things they’ve been told to chase in life. It was revealing that in almost 8.000 words about life, Petersen never mentioned Happiness or fulfillment or even relationships. Petersen concluded her article basically settling for being more aware of her burnout and attempting to seek some joy in life. The Fundamental Problem: We Don't Know Happiness I think these two stories capture a fundamental problem in our nation. We have more education, more wealth, better health, more travel and more prosperity than ever in history, and yet so many—especially younger people—seem sad, depressed or lack direction. We need to fix that. We need to understand our meaning and purpose in life so that we can pursue and find fulfillment and Happiness. When we tap into that fundamental Truth about ourselves, we will be in the best position possible to be successful in all areas of our lives. So, let’s be obvious about it. The meaning of life and your purpose in life are straightforward. The answer is Happiness. Based on Petersen’s millennial article, it seems like we forgot to tell tens of millions of people that life is about Happiness. And we seem to have forgotten how to pursue Happiness. Instead, we’ve become thoroughly captured and enthralled by shiny distractions in life. We’re chasing dozens of all the wrong things in life like social status and money, and stuff like the coolest cars and most expensive houses and newest smartphones and the most prestigious schools and travel sports teams. I’m not saying that its bad to be rich or to appreciate beautiful things. These are all good things that can make our lives better. But they are not the meaning of life. They can provide short-term pleasure, but they can never provide long-term fulfillment. If you make the pursuit of these things for their own sake the focus of your life, you will inevitably find yourself in pain, unhappy and unfulfilled. Meaning of Life: Happiness & Relationship So, this is the first in a series of blog posts where we will talk about the purpose and meaning of your life—Happiness—and how you can pursue it. We’ll take the best ancient, timeless wisdom and apply it to our current times and circumstances. We’ll talk about some simple lessons that you can use to become successful and fulfilled in every area of your life—your personal life, your family life, and your life with your friends and at your work. Let’s talk about your life, your Happiness and your success. Let’s make it simple and easy to understand so you can apply it all areas of your life. So you can hand the Truth about Happiness and success to your own children. Let’s start with Happiness itself. We’ll define Happiness generally as a way of life that brings you deep contentment, satisfaction and lasting joy. So, if Happiness is not about money or status or fame, where do you find it? As we talked about in an earlier blog, Meaning of Life: Happiness, you find Happiness in high-quality relationships. That’s not my opinion.

It is so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of life and find the weeks, months and even years flying buy. We are chasing so many immediate things in life—getting the best job, getting our kids into the right schools and on the right sports teams, living in the right neighborhoods and driving the right cars—that it is easy to lose sight of what life is about. And that’s dangerous. There are two things in life that are certain: death and taxes. If you don’t pay attention to your taxes, the IRS will actively seek you out. The IRS will make you pay attention. Life, on the other hand, will simply keep going on whether you are paying attention or not. A lot of people simply go through life, never really conscious of their own life, never living with intention or purpose. They get old or die and wonder where it all went. I can’t imagine a bigger regret than going through life unconscious, simply letting life happen to you. That gets us to a very important question: Why? Why do you do what you do? What is your life leading to? What is your life destination? Knowing the Why will make you more successful in all aspects of your life—at work, at home with your family, and in your own Happiness. "Why" and Success in Your Life So why do you do what you do? Where is your life going? The answer to that should be Happiness. Fulfillment. As I discussed in an earlier blog/podcast, The Meaning of Life: Happiness, history, tradition and, most of all, research tell us pretty clearly what makes us happy and fulfilled in life: high-quality relationships with others. Let’s step that up: Happiness is all about having high-quality, high-trust relationships based in love. Everything you do in life should point you towards Happiness. Anything that isn’t pointing you towards Happiness is quite literally a waste of your time. Everything you do in life should be building high-quality, high-trust relationships based in love. So, if you want Happiness and fulfillment in life, you should be constantly asking yourself why you do what you do. And the answer to that why should be that your action helps you build high-quality, high-trust loving relationships in your life. Why practice being honest, just, wise, loving and courageous? Because when these become habits, when they become part of your character, you become the best person you can be –and that contributes directly to your high-quality, high-trust, loving relationships. Why practice loving your family? Because it makes you a better person and because it teaches your children how to develop their own high-quality, high-trust, loving relationships. It is the most important thing you can teach them so they can achieve success in life—in their own families, in their work, as leaders in their own communities, and in their own lives. Why care about the schools your children go to or activities they participate in? Because their experience in school builds knowledge and their team-based activities build character, leadership and teamwork. The knowledge they learn and the character they build develops wisdom. Having wisdom puts them in the best position possible to… Wait for it… Develop the high-quality, high-trust, loving relationships they will need to be successful in life. As leaders in their work, In their families and in their communities. Why should you be physically, spiritually and psychologically fit? Because it puts you in the highest-quality, loving relationship with yourself. That, in turns, puts you in the best position to have great relationships with others. Each week, we should review our activities—past and future—and ask why we are doing them. If our activities are not contributing to high-quality relationships with others (or ourselves), then we should replace them with activities that do. In the big picture, developing high-quality relationships gives us, our children and those around us the best chance for Happiness in life.

Love and Happiness Today, we’re going to begin an ongoing conversation about the importance and power of love. Love is obviously a subject very present in our lives. When we are in love we’re happy. When we’re out of love we’re heartbroken and unhappy. We love our parents and our kids. Love is the subject of more than half the hit songs on the radio. As present as love is in our lives, I don’t think we have a good understanding of love. Maybe we’re too familiar with it. Maybe we take it for granted. All too often we think of love as little more than falling in romantic love with someone. No doubt, romantic love—eros—is awesome. It feels great. It’s exciting. Maybe even intoxicating. But love is much bigger than that. It includes love for your parents and your children. Love for your friends. The self-giving love that leads some people to sacrifice their lives for others. Love isn’t just something we feel. Love is also action. In my blog, The Meaning of Life: Happiness, we talk about the importance of relationship for Happiness in life. A study that Harvard has been doing for more than 70 years shows that the most important thing for happiness in life is having high-quality relationships. Happiness does not come from money. Or fame. Or social status. Happiness is deeply tied to having great relationships. And the best relationships are love-based relationships. Loving relationships with your friends. With your spouse. With your children. With your co-workers. Being loved by others changes us. When we practice loving others, it changes us too. Not just changed emotionally, but physically changed. We’re biologically wired for love. It’s embedded deeply in our DNA. That Harvard study didn’t just show that high-quality relationships make you happier in life. People with good relationships are healthier and actually live longer. Let’s flip it the other way. Loneliness, the lack of love, is as deadly as smoking or alcoholism. There’s more. Babies. It turns out that if you give infants all the food and water they need—if you give them all the nutrition they need—but you don’t give them love and physical affection, almost 40% of them will die. A 40% death rate for babies who don’t receive love. More than half of the infant survivors will have significant psychological challenges. The simple and yet profound answer for the meaning of life--for Happiness--is having good, loving relationships. Love is the foundation for a healthy and happy life. When you understand and practice love, you'll receive enormous benefits in life. You’ll have better relationships with your spouse and children and family. You’ll be a much more successful leader at work. You’ll have the best chance for fulfillment and happiness in your own life. Love is at the very core of life. The more you understand love, the better you’ll be at every aspect of your life. One experience taught me a very important lesson about love and life. It’s make-or-break. What you believe about love--what you know about love--dramatically impacts your understanding of life. A Story About Death and Love True story. I had a friend at the gym who was an accomplished doctor with an Ivy League education. Very smart. Very intellectual. He claimed to be an atheist, and we had interesting and thoughtful conversations about life. He had a nice wife who I saw frequently at church. It seemed clear, by the way he talked about and treated her, that he was very much in love with her. So we had our conversations—mostly fun intellectual sparring about life—while riding stationary bikes in the gym. One day our talk was interrupted by a loud crash behind us. A person working out on one of the elliptical machines had collapsed. The doctor jumped off his stationary bike and helped save that person’s life. I didn’t see the doctor again for some time. Our workout schedules didn’t coincide.

In this blog, we’ll talk about the Meaning of Life, Happiness, what that means and what you can start doing right now to achieve it. You can find a podcast version of this blog article on our website or iTunes. If you want to dive in to the issue of leadership, you can get my book, “On Leadership, What’s Broken in Our Society and How We Fix It” on Amazon.com. What is Happiness? If you ask people what they want in life, they’ll almost always tell you that they want Happiness. Isn’t that what we all want? Isn’t the meaning of life Happiness? But that always gives rise to the next questions: What is happiness and how do we get it? And that’s usually as far as we go in the discussion. Talking about what Happiness is and how we might achieve it gets too complicated too quickly. Is it about having money? How much money? Being healthy? Living a long time? Being with the person you love? Owning a Ferrari? The Dodgers finally winning a World Series? Are those the things that Happiness is about? If you’ve had a few philosophy classes, the question of Happiness can get buried in all sorts of technical distinctions between happiness and joy and thriving and flourishing and whatever. A great topic for a few beers at the pub or a late-night dorm discussion gets quickly lost in philosophical technicalities. Besides, who has time to think about happiness when we are struggling to make it to our next pay check, get the mortgage paid and get the kids from school to their sports practices. Most of us are too worried about keeping our jobs and getting our kids into college. Who has time to think about Happiness in life when we’re just trying to survive in life? Life is complicated and high-speed and overwhelming. But we can fix that. What if we had a simple way of understanding the meaning of life—Happiness—and some straightforward strategies to get there? What if we could do things today that helped us be happy through the rest of our lives? Let me tell you the story of a guy who grew up in southern California. A few people had put together a concept to make and sell high-quality baseball cards, but they needed some help. So, one of them brought in his high school buddy, Richard, as an investor and accountant. Over the next 10 years, Richard built the company into a giant. He became a billionaire who also owned a charter jet company. Richard was a guy who had it all: business success. Fame. Boatloads of money. Airplanes and billionaire status. But he died at the age of 59. Alcohol poisoning. He was suffering from addiction and alcohol dementia. In his climb to becoming a billionaire he had cheated partners and lost many of his old and close friends. He had destroyed most of the important relationships in his life. His billionaire status and business success did not prevent him from drinking himself to death, apparently deeply unhappy. Let’s contrast that with the story of a woman from a small town in Alabama. She grew up in a simple house with perhaps three rooms. She left home at the age of 18 the day after her high school graduation. She moved to the state capital and found a job. Eventually she met the man who became her husband. He was moving from job to job, not making much money. They got married and he became a union tradesman Between the two of them, they made a modest living. She had challenges in life. She lost her only son shortly after he was born. She raised her two daughters while her husband was away for long periods on construction jobs. For the last five years of her life she battled health problems that had her in and out of the hospital. The last 18 months of her life were quite hard and painful before she passed away in the spring of 2017. Those close to Anne will tell you that she died happy. Despite the life challenges and suffering, she was happy because she had close, loving relationships in her life. With her husband of 57 years. With her daughter and grandchildren.

Sure, we could have layed up like David Simms at the US Open for Episode 4, but we’ve got too much Roy McAvoy in us. So, we are charging forward and tackling one of the biggest questions of all, “What’s the meaning of life?” The episode starts with a question from a 6-and-3/4-year-old boy, veers through Monty Python, Douglas Adams, and Tony Robbins and ultimately lands not a place, but a perspective. We end the show talking to positive psychologist Laura Delizonna, and she helps us to understand what happiness really is, and it’s benefits in the workplace and in our lives. The last lecture in the course wraps up the discussion of clinical psychology with a discussion of treatment efficacy. Does therapy actually work? Professor Bloom summarizes the different types of influences that clinical interventions might have on people who receive therapy. Professor Bloom ends with a review of one of the most interesting research topics in "positive psychology," happiness. What makes us happy? How does happiness vary across person and culture? What is happiness for? Students will hear how the most recent research in psychology attempts to answer these questions and learn how people are surprisingly bad at predicting what will make them happiest.

First of all, be grateful for kindness shown to you. And see to it that you return a good deed, with interest, if the opportunity presents itself, or, better yet, make the opportunity — lest you forget. On the other hand, if another person tries to show you their appreciation for some kind act, do not make it hard for them to repay you. Instead, anticipate their wish and meet them half way, thus assisting them on the road to happiness by helping them fulfill their desire.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/inspirational-living/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It is sturdy confidence that right must triumph, united to tireless courage to make it triumph. Optimism is the finest weapon in the armory of the individual. It unifies all the undaunted virtues of your strength into a force and inspiration. It means fighting for, or with, the battalions of right, love, justice, and truth — with a determination to win. True optimism is something more than a continuous performance of hope. It is the joy of living — made an actual fact. It means seeking the best, living the best, doing the best. It means focusing all that is highest in our character to meet conditions. Resolve to be happy regardless of what comes. You cannot afford to be otherwise. Count everything joy. Meet everything in a spirit of joy, and expect everything to give you joy. By creating a cheerful world in your own imagination, you develop the tendency to a sunny disposition, and by meeting everything in an attitude of joy, you will soon meet only those things that naturally produce joy. Like does attract like. Much sunshine will gather more sunshine, and the happiest mind meets the most delightful experiences. When exceptions occur, pass them by as of no consequence, because they ARE of no consequence to you. You are interested only in happy events. Therefore, there is no reason whatever why you should pay any attention to the other kind. It is a fact that the less attention we pay to unpleasant conditions, the less unpleasantness we meet in life. That person who looks for the disagreeable everywhere, and expects to find it everywhere, will certainly find what they are looking for in most places, if not in all places. On the other hand, the person who expects only the pleasant will seldom find anything else. We attract what we think of the most.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/inspirational-living/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

By Orison Swett Marden.Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: At the very outset of your professional life, you can make no better resolution than that, whatever happens, you will stand well with yourself, that you will never forfeit your self-respect, never besmirch your honor by perverting your divine nature to do mean, low, dishonorable things. If you firmly resolve that you will always have the good opinion of at least one person in the world (yourself), no one, no conditions or circumstances, can cheat you out of an honorable career, an honorable life.---------Get the best of our podcast in book form by visiting: https://inspirationallifelessons.comGet our podcast with full transcripts and without ads by visiting: https://livinghour.org/patronSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/inspirational-living/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Listen to episode 661 of the Inspirational Living podcast: What is the Meaning of Life? | Happiness Podcasts. Edited and adapted from The Book of Courage by William James Dawson.Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: The greatest of all questions is “What is the meaning of life?” Sooner or later every person has to find some sort of answer to that question. We can live neither wisely nor courageously without it. It may even be said that a wrong answer (or an answer only partially right) is better than none; for the person who thinks themselves right, even though they be wrong, will attain better ends than the one who is wholly uncertain as to the right or wrongness of their acts. -----------Transform your life in 30 days with our MAJESTY meditation program: https://livinghour.org/majesty.
