Rotman Executive Summary
The real dangers of fake reviews: How a billion-dollar industry is reshaping e-commerce

Rotman Executive Summary

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2024 15:53

Phony stars and false testimonials are rampant online. But is this really a problem, how did we get here, and what responsibility to e-commerce platforms have in addressing the problem? Assistant professor Shreyas Sekar explores what the future of reviews looks like, and why platforms like Amazon should probably take the issue of fake reviews more seriously. Show notes: [0:00] When you see thousands of version of the same product you're looking to buy online, how do you parse through the options to make a selection? This is where reviews come in. [0:46] Shreyas Sekar, an assistant professor at the Rotman School of Management/University of Toronto Scarborough studies how consumers make choices online, and how these choices can be manipulated.[0:59] More than 29 million Canadians made an online purchase in 2022 – and with that comes inevitable fraud. [1:23] Fake reviews are likely a billion-dollar industry. [2:08] A quick brief on how Amazon shows you products in your search results, and why results near the top of the search are more likely to get purchased. [3:31] Reviews play a crucial role in helping sort the rankings, with products with more plentiful and favourable reviews landing higher in the results. [3:57] Estimates peg phony reviews and algorithm manipulation between four and 40 per cent. Shreyas suspects it's somewhere in the middle. [4:14] Why is this a problem? [5:29] Consumers are likely also buying products on false information, resulting in a substandard experience, likely costing $150 million a year. [6:07] This is likely to erode trust in the entire online buying ecosystem.[6:49] So how did we get here? Let's look first at how we used to shop a few decades ago.[7:17] Amazon changed the game, first by offering online shopping, but second helping popularize the “marketplace.” [8:02] What is a marketplace? [8:44] How did the marketplace create an even greater reliance on reviews?[9:14] And, in the current system, e-commerce platforms have little incentives to fight this issue.[9:36] Fake reviews have gotten very sophisticated.[10:58] So what can consumers and small businesses do? [12:25] How can AI be utilized to help solve the problem of fake reviews? Shreyas has two suggestions. First, it can create a Coles' Notes for consumers. [12:56] Second, it can be used to create some randomness. [14:11] Why does it even matter? “Algorithms play a huge role in our life, which means that we have to critically examine this pipeline, in terms of the different ways in which humans can manipulate the algorithms to do their bidding. But when you trick the algorithm, you're not just tricking one consumer, you're tricking 1000s of future consumers, who are going to rely on this algorithm for the purchasing decision.”

On this episode of Transform Talks, Randy Bradley, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management,  University of Tennessee, Knoxville, joins host Maria Villablanca.  Randy begins by discussing Intelligent Assistants (IA) versus Artificial Intelligence (AI). A solution, tool, model, or algorithm will make decisions rather than augment the talent. He believes thinking about it in this manner will help understand the utilization of the technology.  Randy has decades of experience in supply chain and IT research and strategy. The advice he gives on rethinking the way technology is invested in and deployed can make all the difference for businesses. It's a business need, not a technological need. He breaks down how more focus should be placed on improving the workforce experience. Decisions with the greatest impact may be made at the C-suite level, but they're infrequent. So, decisions affecting operations on the ground level happen all the time. Listen to the episode now to learn more timely technological advice from Randy.   References: AlixPartners Survey

Terri talks to Eric Quon-Lee about he was drawn to the US from Canada because of his need to go faster. Terri and Eric talk about how globalization has shaken people’s foundations making them revisit their values which can be very uncomfortable and resisting bias takes effort. Who is Eric Quon-Lee? Eric Quon-Lee is a seasoned cross-border management consultant currently based in San Francisco, CA with several years of management consulting experience primarily in finance, strategy and operations.    Prior to his current role, Eric worked for several leading Canadian corporations in aerospace, telecom and financial services. In his spare time, Eric is highly involved in the startup ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as globally as a “super-connector”. Eric has a MBA from the Rotman School of Management – University of Toronto.   Show Highlights If Eric could wave a magic wand, he would give more people more opportunity to do what they want to do and pursue their hopes and dreams. Eric talks about how innovation looks different in geographic locations outside of the Silicon Valley which is good for innovation. Eric thinks that other geographic areas shouldn’t simply copy and paste the Silicon Valley model but should encourage people to innovate and think differently. Terri talks about mentoring the Ada program in Berlin, Germany and seeing what the mindsets are for those who aren’t raised in the Silicon Valley. Eric’s mindset drew him to Silicon Valley from Canada where he grew up. He was always drawn to the US. He wanted to go faster. Eric talks about an interesting tipping point and we should start to work more collaboratively Eric comments on how in the US, we have more of a mindset of figuring it out as we go along versus in Canada, where society is based on peace, order and government (POG) which limits speed. Right now in the US, people are having their mindsets and value sets challenged and we need to get people to think less about stereotypes and appreciate people as people. Terri asked Eric if he heard the term ‘wanta-preneur’ which is a new term for her. Eric’s book is Ideate Your Career and we will share a link in the show notes (see References). Eric thinks the only way you get better is through practice and this leads to building your risk tolerance. We limit people’s ability to do this by expecting perfection and have scare people from taking risks. Eric thinks that there are a lot of things that are funded in the Silicon Valley that shouldn’t be funded and perhaps we should focus on funding the really hard things. Terri asks Eric if we have diluted the system by investing in non-billion dollar ideas. He said no because there are multiple layers and multiple models. Eric talks about how patterns make us comfortable and this is where we fall down. It takes effort to break out of the patterns and resist the bias which is hard work. Eric comments on how our education system doesn’t teach critical thinking which is a necessary skill especially in our society today. We need to make it more comfortable for people to fall down and fail and learn how to get back up. Terri talks about how she is encouraging her son to pursue philosophy or political science in college to learn how to think which has become a valued skillset. Terri shares how bored her daughter was in school and how it affected her behavior and how they decided to do independent study for the rest of her 8th grade to provide more stimulating learning. Eric writes in his book about everyone needs capability, experience and network to be a fully functional human being. Eric talks about how much of the societal unrest is because people’s foundations have been shaken or cracked within globalization.   Terri’s Key Takeaway Globalization has led to some of the societal unrest as people have lost their individual or community foundations and need to find a different way to feel stabilized in the world.   References in the Podcast Ada: https://www.ada-accelerator.com/ Ideate Your Career: https://www.amazon.ca/Ideate-Your-Career-There-Straight-ebook/dp/B078GSTPNF Eric’s website: http://quon-lee.com/index.html Eric’s newsletter link: http://quon-lee.com/newsletter.html   Contact Eric can be reached through LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/equonlee/ or through his website at http://quon-lee.com/index.html.
