In this episode, we will delve into the discord between human rights and animal rights. This friction has been featured in various spheres: academic studies, the media, food and culture literature, food security issues, and the law which is where we will focus on today.Maneesha Deckha is Professor and Lansdowne Chair in Law at the University of Victoria in British Columbia where she directs the Animals & Society Research Initiative. Her research expertise includes critical animal law, vegan ecofeminist theory, and postcolonial theory. She is the author of Animals as Legal Beings: Contesting Anthropocentric Legal Orders and has directed an open access documentary series designed for high school and undergraduate students called A Deeper Kindness: Youth Activism in Animal Law.Maneesha gives real world examples of legal cases to show that there are cultural, racial, and indigenous rights concerns for extending legal rights to nonhuman animals and how we can mitigate these tensions. One example is the case brought on behalf of Happy the Elephant at the Bronx Zoo by the Nonhuman Animal Rights Project. She unpacks some of the history of these apprehensions and offers a framework for solidarity to move us forward for everyone's benefit. RESOURCES:Books:Trickster Trilogy by Eden RobbinsonAphro-ism: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, and Black Veganism from Two Sisters by Aph Ko & Syl KoSista Vegan edited by A. In this episode, we chat with Maneesha Deckha, Professor and Lansdowne Chair in Law at the University of Victoria, about her research in critical animal law. We discuss her 2021 book, Animals as Legal Beings: Contesting Anthropocentric Legal Orders in which she argues for a new legal category of “beingness” for animals that transcends the inadequate legal categories of “persons” or “property.” We also dive into her 2023 article Animalization and Dehumanization Concerns: Another Psychological Barrier to Animal Law Reform, in which she highlights why a critique of human exceptionalism is essential to advancing the goals of anti-racism and decolonization. Highlights include: Maneesha's personal journey into exploring the links between animal legal studies and critical animal studies, health law, reproductive ethics, feminist analysis of law, and postcolonial and critical race theory; Deckha's evaluation of the 2022 decision by the New York Court of Appeals with respect to the ongoing captivity of Happy, an elephant at the Bronx Zoo, in which she outlines why the dissociation of humans from animals is counterproductive to eliminating racism and other intra-human prejudices and inequities; How the legal classification of animals as “property” creates problems, such as commodification and objectification; meanwhile, using the “personhood” category for animals exacerbates the concept of human exceptionalism. Deckha argues for a new category of “beingness' for nonhuman animals which recognizes their embodiment, relationality, and vulnerability; A new six-part series documentary series targeted towards secondary school students, A Deeper Kindness: Animal Law and Youth Activism, which surveys the current field of animal law and policy through the eyes of four youth active in animal advocacy. Maneesha Ghiya is Managing Partner and Founder of FemHealth Ventures, a firm focused on providing investment capital to entrepreneurs focused on women's health. Investing in healthcare since 2000, Maneesha has invested via public equities, private equities and as a hedge fund specialist.  She is a Senior Advisor to ExSight Ventures, an ophthalmology-focused venture capital fund and serves on multiple boards.  Our conversation starts with Maneesha's background and her early interest in the intersection of healthcare, engineering and business.  We then move to the personal experience when delivering her child that catalyzed her interest in FemHealth and the venture fund that she founded with this as its focus.  There is a startling disparity in funding, awareness and the profile attached to female health issues and we list some of these - the lack of participation by women in drug trials, the low level of research dollars applied to health conditions that traditionally affect women and the low level of knowledge regarding disparities in how certain illnesses - e.g. cardiac arrest - present. Maneesha lists some of the innovative solutions being sourced to solve some of these problems and what kind of commercial potential they could have.  Series 2 of 2023 is kindly sponsored by Beach Point Capital Advisors, an investment manager that believes in investment beyond the traditional.  It specializes in credit investments and employs a flexible, value-oriented, risk-controlled focusing on complex and less well-followed opportunities.  You can find all of our podcasts on The Fiftyfaces Hub, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

Last year Massarsky Consulting valued over 300 catalogs totaling more than $6.5 billion.  Maneesha Ghiya is Managing Partner and Founder of FemHealth Ventures, a firm focused on providing investment capital to entrepreneurs focused on women's health. On the 23rd of February, 2010 a posh residential building in Bangalore named Carlton Towers caught fire. There were many, many illegal aspects in the construction of that building… and as a result the fire engines were unable to get to all the residents in time. Several lives were lost that day, and many people were left injured. Some irrevocably scarred for life.Maneesha Ramakrishnan and her two small sons were in that building. They watched people jump to their death… as they feared for their own lives. They were finally rescued at 5:15 in the afternoon. Her sons were not physically affected, but they carry the mental impact to this date.  For Maneesha, the smoke she inhaled left her vocal cords permanently constricted. She's had multiple surgeries to try and fix this… but nothing has worked. She has to breathe through a tube surgically implanted in her larynx. It's called a tracheostomy tube and it has to be changed once in four months… forever. When I met Maneesha a few weeks ago, it was not to talk about this life-altering incident, but to find out why she had decided to feed 44 dogs every day. And why she was doing this despite all the injuries to her body and soul.Oddly I met Maneesha on Feb 23rd, 2022, exactly at 5:15, twelve years after the incident, and at the exact moment she was rescued. She was resplendent in a glittery saree and brought me tuberoses which are my most favourite flower in the whole world. We did not know each other at all… but now, I feel I've made a friend for life. I like to think that dogs change people's lives… always for the better.

In Animals as Legal Beings: Contesting Anthropocentric Legal Orders (University of Toronto Press, 2021), Maneesha Deckha critically examines how Canadian law and, by extension, other legal orders around the world, participate in the social construction of the human-animal divide and the abject rendering of animals as property. Through a rigorous but cogent analysis, Deckha calls for replacing the exploitative property classification for animals with a new transformative legal status or subjectivity called "beingness." In developing a new legal subjectivity for animals, one oriented toward respecting animals for who they are rather than their proximity to idealized versions of humanness, Animals as Legal Beings seeks to bring critical animal theorizations and animal law closer together. Throughout, Deckha draws upon the feminist animal care tradition, as well as feminist theories of embodiment and relationality, postcolonial theory, and critical animal studies. Her argument is critical of the liberal legal view of animals and directed at a legal subjectivity for animals attentive to their embodied vulnerability, and desirous of an animal-friendly cultural shift in the core foundations of anthropocentric legal systems. Theoretically informed yet accessibly presented, Animals as Legal Beings makes a significant contribution to an array of interdisciplinary debates and is an innovative and astute argument for a meaningful more-than-human turn in law and policy. Akash Ondaatje is a historical researcher focusing on the interconnected lives of humans and animals. It is still painful. It was always going to be as painful. Allowing the emotion of excitement during the initial phases of the pregnancy journey does make it MORE painful than it would have otherwise been without the excitement. Avoiding the pain forever is impossible. Feeling the pain and moving through the pain is the goal. We are not victims of what happens in life. Every decision, every path, every emotion we experience is a choice. Doctors may say funny things. Friends may say odd things. Nurses, family, and coworkers may say strange things. They often just want to say something, but do not know what to say? Why? Because everyone needs to hear different things. So, it does not matter what people say. Do not be a victim of the words or actions of others. We can choose how we interpret the words of others. We have the power to choose what to hear.  When someone in our life may be experiencing miscarriage, fertility issues, or child loss, these are things we can say: I am here for you. I am listening to you. You get to think what you are thinking. You get to feel what you are feeling. We can talk about it or we do not need talk about it. WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF How do I stay curious in my marriage or relationship? How can I stop being a victim of other people’s words?  Am I telling myself that I am doing enough today? How can I be more comfortable in my own skin today? Do I fear getting too excited in my journey because I fear disappointment and failure?    FEATURED ON THIS SHOW Coaching Link: https://LifeCoachingwithManeeshaAhluwaliaMD.as.me/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Life-Coaching-with-Maneesha-Ahluwalia-MD-104629444745857 Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/maneesha17 Email: maneesha17@gmail.com   *This podcast is a member of the Doctor Podcast Network   SPONSOR: doctorpodcastnetwork.com/larrykeller

This has led her to feelthat he has deceived and misled her over the years, and she’s prettyupset about it. The Stream’s reply is one she will probably need to playrepeatedly in order to really grasp all that she was told by them.Next came a question from a college student:Sumaiya asked:“How can I manifest a car by myself without money!?“Is it even possible when I am a student?“Sometimes I feel so down. How can i get that much money to buy a car bymyself!“I want to buy my own car with my own money, without my parents’ help.“Please share you manifestation story and experience if you have..“My dream car – Audi A8”This was an exceptionally synchronistic question, because David himselfmanifested a new car for himself with no money when he was a teenager! Finally, we have this question from Jim:“When I was younger I manifested a higher income than I do now.“I had better health than now.“To return to higher income and better health, should I focus on feelinghow I did before or visualize a better now as I want it to be?“Should I accept what is, as a season of polarity, and find appreciationfor expansion through what will be eventual overcoming in my life?“Or should I strive and work for improvement?“I try to answer my own questions with my own stream connection, but Iknow I have beliefs in the way and need help.“Please give me specific answers to my situation.“I trust that you are all knowing, so you will guide me.“Thank you so much… truly from the heart appreciation.”Use the LOA Today app to send in your own questions for The Stream toanswer on an upcoming episode. The Software and Data Carpentry organizations have a mission of making it easier for scientists and data analysts in academia to replicate and review each others work. In order to achieve this goal they conduct training and workshops that teach modern best practices in software and data engineering, including version control and proper data management. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak with Maneesha Sane, the program coordinator for both organizations, so that we could learn more about how these projects are related and how they approach their mission.
