From time to time, The Coaching Podcast understands that we all lead busy lives, and sometimes you might have less than 10 minutes in your daily schedule to listen to The Coaching Podcast for inspiration. Therefore, our guest coaches this week are Coach Mick (Chris Michalowski) and Jorge Capestany - performance coaches who walk their talk. With years of coaching experience, these bite-sized interviews, from years ago, still hold true today when we reflect on their responses as to what makes a great coach: Coach Mick (1 min, 50 seconds) - believes that a great coach has passion, compassion and empathy. Coach Capestany (4 mins, 58 seconds) - believes that a great coach can see possibilities, is a lifelong learner and can customize their content to meet the needs of the learner. Emma is very grateful to Jorge and his wife, Coach Marty, for their hospitality of love over the years and for introducing her to Coach Mick during a Polar Vortex in Michigan when they were both speaking at a high school conference. You can learn more about each coach below: Coach Mick, Chris Michalowski, USPTA Elite Professional & USTA High Performance Coach From Coach Mick: My ultimate goal is to get to know you better, but first I will fill you in on who I am, just to break the ice. My name is Chris Michalowski. I am a USPTA Tennis Professional and Director of Tennis at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa (click here to see) in one of the most pristine areas of Northern Michigan. Next to my faith, wife and family, tennis is a passion of mine that I hold dear to since I started playing, seriously anyway, at the age of 13. Tennis really broke me out of my shell and gave me confidence in many different areas of my life. I became a ranked junior player and was one match away from winning a state championship in high school. Three years after I started playing, I started teaching at the Midland Community Tennis Center, in Midland Michigan. It is known as one of the top clubs in the nation and recently, Midland won the “Best Tennis Town” by the United States Tennis Association. I loved to teach and wanted to learn as much as I could about the game (it helped my playing too). I knew that teaching was in my future, but my coach at the time encouraged me to stay in Architecture, my other career consideration , because of the long hours and the toll tennis takes on the body. I was accepted into the University of Cincinnati's architecture program, which was rated very high at the time, but the long hours in the studio kept me from playing and teaching. While at Cincinnati, the Ferris State University coach called and informed me that he wanted me to play on the team and take part in their new Professional Tennis Management program, the first ever, endorsed by the United States Professional Tennis Association. I was all over it. I walked through the doors and from there, never looked back. I was a member of the varsity mens team and when I wasn't hitting, I was absorbing all I could to become the best possible teaching professional that I could be. I am still that way and it drives my wife crazy sometimes. But to be honest, I feel that you can never stop learning and becoming even better at what you love to do. I have remained at the resort for 25 years as the director and was a director in the summertime (for 4 years) at one of the most prestigious country clubs in the Midwest at the time. Two jobs was a lot to handle so I decided to stay here where I feel like I was called to be. Thankfully, I stayed or I would not have met my incredible wife and parent four great kids we have been blessed with. One thing that I will always stand by, just like playing a match, is that when you are up 5-2 in the set, remember how you got there and keep doing the things that got you there in the first place. Don't change your game style at a critical time, especially when you are so close to winning the set The same goes for my outlook on teaching and my career. I still average close to 40 hours a week on the tennis court, manage a staff of 12 teaching professionals/instructors and stay active building tennis in my community with sore knees and all. I love being out there and that is what got me to where I am today, so why change things at 5-2 in the set? Do I consider myself an expert? The industry has said yes, but it is not that simple because tennis has changed over time and keeps advancing in exciting ways. I feel that it is important for teaching professionals, like myself , to stay in tune with sport science, new trends and teaching techniques, technology and new ways of teaching the game so that I can stay on top of “my game.” If I taught the same way I did 20 years ago, things would be very different for me right now and I would not have the opportunities and successes that I have been blessed with. Even as a USPTA Midwest Tester, I still learn something each time we administer the teaching exam to new tennis professionals. So what does all this mean? It means that through the use of technology and my knowledge and relationships that I developed with experts from around the world, I hope to be able to have a relationship with you and help in any way that I can to take your game to the next level. We talk about the importance of having a well-rounded game from a young age which includes the development of every shot and style of play. We also discussed the use and training of "sabotage" tactics within his tennis program, which allows players to disrupt the rhythm of their opponents and make themselves tougher to compete against. Lastly, we discuss Jorge's concept of Tennis IQ, which was part of the inspiration behind the name of this podcast; Jorge describes how he conceptualizes Tennis IQ and breaks down this concept into three levels. Interview highlights: 3:38 - Jorge describes his introduction to the sport of tennis 5:32 - The importance of playing multiple sports as a kid for athletic development 8:10 - Jorge talks about how he started coaching and the development of his coaching philosophy 13:58 - The concept of "Tennis IQ" and its three levels 30:17 - Seeing tennis as a combat sport and looking for ways to sabotage the game of your opponent 37:43 - The importance of having a clear game-plan going into a point to utilize your strengths and target your opponents weaknesses, and how this can be trained in practice 43:07 - How competing regularly and playing more practice matches leads to tennis players developing mental toughness 51:43 - How tennis players can focus on the present moment and the next point by directing their thoughts to the acronym WIN (What's Important Now?) 54:28 - Playing "mission-based tennis" and having a clear intention going into every point 58:17 - The importance of having options instead of just playing one-dimensional tennis 1:00:50 - Establishing a junior tennis development plan and helping players improve on the five most important aspects of the game at every age To learn more about Josh and Brian's backgrounds and sport psychology businesses, go to TiebreakerPsych.com and PerformanceXtra.com. Andy Traynor, Plane Truth Certified Instructor and Trackman Master Professional, helps improve your game from 100 yards in on this segment of Next on the Tee Golf Podcast.
“The power of the game is that it joins people together. It doesn’t matter how rich, how old, how strong, or your nationality. I teach the kids in my academy that golf can do wonders, if you just let it take you there.” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Tony-Brooks-Portrait-cropped.jpg) Tony Brooks, PGA Legacy Master Professional Owner Lion Junior Golf Academy Diamond Bar, California If I had only one word to describe Tony Brooks…it would be “contrarian.” And that’s because my definition of the word contrarian is someone who looks at the world through an unfiltered lens. Contrarians usually have opinions that cut through politics and personal agendas, and that come from the heart. Contrarians are not always interested in achieving a consensus, and are never afraid to rock the boat. They’re more interested in getting to the heart of any matter, uncovering the truth, and finding solutions that work. Tony Brooks — a man with more than 30,000 LinkedIn followers — is entitled to be a contrarian for two reasons: First….Tony is recognized as a master of his craft. When it comes to golf, he speaks from authority. Secondly…He cares deeply about the game, and about how he uses his craft to benefit people’s lives. And we’re not talking about lowering handicaps. One example of that? The legal name of Tony’s company…GOLF, Inc…stands for Game Of Life First, Inc. Here’s a biographical snapshot: Tony grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa as a 3rd generation golfer. He’s played the game since he was 5 years old; and remembers how he was treated as a marginalized junior golfer. Based on that experience, Tony has dedicated his career to ensuring the growth of the game through junior golf. And toward that end, for the past 13 years Tony has been the owner of the Lion Junior Golf Academy in Diamond Bar California, which is located east of Los Angeles. Prior to that, Tony worked as a golf professional at a number of California golf facilities, including the famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Mission Viejo Country Club, and Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda. He has also served as a Director of Instruction for the PGA Tour. Notably, Tony is one of around 375 PGA Master Professionals in the country, which represents around 1% of the current PGA membership. The PGA of America created its Master Professional program in 1969 for PGA members who wanted to pursue the highest level of golf education possible. Tony’s specialty for his Masters program was teaching and instruction. Tony has a long list of other professional certifications and recognitions. Last year, for example, he was a recipient of the Golf Range Association of America’s “Top 50 in the U.S. Growth of the Game” Awards. He also is a GolfTIPS National Magazine Junior Academy contributor. Show Highlights: Tony’s journey from South Africa to the Lion Junior Golf Academy in California The basis for Tony’s love / hate relationship with the PGA How golf professionals are unwittingly devaluing their knowledge and lowering the demand for their services The story behind Tony’s application to become a member of the LPGA The meaning of “dot days,” and the impact they can have on a person’s life Tony’s outlook for the future growth of golf in America: who will win and who will lose Why Tony donates 20% of his firm’s net profits to a South African charity How a conversation with Dr. Tim Somerville of the Professional Golfers Career College (https://golfcollege.edu/) changed Tony’s life forever Tony’s personal connection with Lee Trevino when he was 18 years-old The two times that Tony tried to become a PGA Tour professional, and why he failed Notable Quotes: On the future of the golf industry: “The golf business needs to wake up....

#25 Design Your Plan & Follow Through with Mike VAN ZUTPHEN (Part 1) January 28, 2015 | Expert Game Plan: An American (USA), USPTA Master Professional, Inductee of the Tennis Teacher Hall of Fame & 20 Year USPTA Tester of the Year _________________________________________________ BACKGROUND On today’s show we will get into specialized training and how important structure & having a relationship with your coach/player is. We will also discuss three different concepts involved with getting better through trainings: mechanical, cognitive, and emotional training. Mike dives into how important structure of not only training but your life as an athlete is to your success and how you should track progress and goals. In this first part we also talk about Functional Intelligence which Mike describes as “...the ability to function under pressure, in the defined environment, making great decisions based on a tactical way to play and the statistical percentages” and why it’s so important athletes have it! BIO Born, Mike Van Zutphen on September 17, 1953 and currently living in Huntington Beach, California USA. Degree in Business from the University of Tulsa. It took Mike ten years to get his classification of Master Professional after going through strenuous requirements. Has worked with all levels U.S. Players to develop their game/game plan. He helped design the curriculum guide for all the grade schools in the U.S. Players all over the world started coming to him to be coached. Played World Team Tennis With Pat Dupret, and at that time was hired as a doubles specialist. His best win was beating 11th ranked ranked in the world, Andrew Peterson from South Africa. Mike feels that his consistency level and lack of structure is what kept him from making it further in the professional tennis world. Coached at a Junior College, had his own TV show, and was the owner of Sun Tennis Magazine. Was the director of Tennis Operations Arizona, and is still currently the owner of the Arizona Tennis Association. Trained 2 NCAA Champions and a Wimbledon Junior champion, Wesley Whitehouse. Share this with one person you think could benefit the most… PERSONAL QUOTE: “If you live your life to a certain standard and you give everything you’ve got, you can’t feel bad about whatever happens with the outcome” “A ball of the net has a future” Key Discussion Points: What is the advantage of having a coach like you with your philosophy? What are some examples of how an athlete could structure their daily lives better? What are your thoughts on tracking and functional intelligence? Key Lessons: A coach needs to have a relationship with the player As a coach, find a way to learn from other coaches, as their style may be relevant to your “..coaches in the industry that I would consider really phenomenal teachers, and what I tried to do was gather that information from those coaches that I felt was relevant for me and I’d go back to adding those skills or those techniques to my style of teaching.” MV @ 11:58 Everybody is different and receives coaching/teaching differently Polish the skill so that the athlete owns it Athletes need to identify where they are at, to know where they are going Avoid “random” training “ Design a specific training so that it attacks the weakness that is actually occurring in the match.” MV @ 19:01 Having structure is designing so that the athlete optimizes his/her chances When watching film, don’t focus on what you think is happening, but focus on what actually IS happening Build up your weakness, so they are strong when others attack them Athletes have a 10 minute window after competition to refuel their system “Whatever I put into my system, after that 10 minute window, the doors shut, its in my stomach, but its not gonna effect the cells in the body.” MV @ 29:10 Functional intelligence is the hardest skill to train athletes “..its the ability to function under pressure, in the defined environment, making great decisions based on a tactical way to play and the statistical percentages.” MD @ 35:48 Give a tool or habit you love to use to stay healthy: Playing Doubles Name one learning resource you love to use: Books, Visuals, and world class coaches List a cause, project, or belief concerning adding value to others that is most important to you: Working with Special Olympics “Plan your progress, don’t randomly do it, it’s a game plan of life, its a game plan of professional standards that you have to live by to have success, you can’t randomly do it, design your plan, and follow through” -Mike Van Zutphen BOOKS: Management book; Player Development Book; Get a Grip; NTRP; Strings, Tension and Rackets Mentioned : USPTA, Tennis Teacher Hall of Fame, NCAA, Wimbledon, Wesley Whitehouse, Arizona Tennis Association, Pat Dupret, Andrew Peterson , Sun Tennis Magazine, University of Tulsa.
