For many business owners, being busy isn’t just a reality – it’s a status symbol. Ask any tradie how business is going, and you’ll hear: “Mate, flat out! Non-stop. Can’t keep up.” And there’s a certain pride in that. Like if you’re not run off your feet, you mustn’t be doing well enough. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Busyness isn’t a business strategy. If you’re drowning in work, stretched thin, and never moving forward, is that really success? Today, we’re challenging the idea that exhaustion equals achievement. Because the most successful business owners aren’t the busiest—they’re the smartest with their time. In this episode you’ll learn:

In this episode of "It's the Bottom Line That Matters" podcast, our hosts engaged in a dynamic conversation centered around a fundamental business concern: "Am I working hard on the right things?" Jennifer, Daniel, and Patricia dove deep into the intricacies of strategic planning, priority management, and effective execution in the context of professional endeavors. Daniel offered a strategic perspective, emphasizing the importance of aligning tasks with overarching business objectives and using the acronym "WIN" (What's Important Now) as a guiding principle to ensure that his efforts are consistently focused on what truly matters. He underscored the necessity for small business owners to make decisions that propel their businesses forward while acknowledging the plethora of tasks vying for their attention. Patricia echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of periodic self-realignment and the need to distinguish between tasks that advance strategic goals and those that amount to mere "busy work." She emphasized the criticality of identifying tasks that only the individual can effectively tackle and delegating or scheduling the others appropriately. The hosts delved into the concept of the "incomplete list," a term coined by Jennifer's coach, James Malinchak, which challenges the traditional notion of a to-do list and encourages constant reflection and reprioritization. They expounded on the idea of focusing solely on the top priority, as advocated by Warren Buffett, to maximize productivity and drive results. Throughout the episode, the hosts dished out an array of actionable insights, life hacks, and practical tips for aligning one's efforts with strategic objectives, making informed task-related decisions, and leveraging accountability to ensure continuous forward momentum. If you're a business owner, entrepreneur, or professional seeking to elevate your productivity and ensure that your efforts are channeled effectively, this episode is a treasure trove of wisdom. Tune in for an enriching discussion that promises to equip you with invaluable tools to work smarter, not just harder, in pursuit of your professional goals. The great coach understood that we achieve our goals one step and one choice at a time. This same principle is powerful in thinking about following Jesus. How can we seek each moment to maintain a Kingdom mindset?

The Power of Next Play Speed: Graham Betchart's Strategy on Overcoming Mistakes In this episode of "Coaching Youth Hoops" with host Bill Flitter, special guest Graham Betchart discusses the importance of mental skills training for youth basketball players. Betchart emphasizes the need to provide and offer mental training exercises consistently, even if initially, kids may not be interested. He believes that although children may not be fully conscious or aware at a younger age, the lessons will start to click later on. Betchart encourages coaches to be patient and persistent in offering and providing information, as it may take time for individuals to become aware and interested. Betchart suggests allocating 5 minutes per practice towards mental training, bookending practice sessions with 2 minutes dedicated to mental training exercises at the beginning and end. He introduces a mental training exercise called the WiFi walk, where the team does a series of breathing exercises and walks back and forth on the court while focusing on feeling their feet on the ground to become more present and focused before practice. The speaker also discusses the concept of "next play speed" and the importance of moving forward in the game. He shares examples of basketball players, like Aaron Gordon, who have improved by practicing this skill. Betchart highlights the importance of being competitive with a positive attitude and "competitive compassion" towards referees, creating a positive relationship with them. Throughout the episode, Betchart emphasizes the significance of building a positive mindset, being fully present, and choosing a response rather than reacting. He provides various exercises, such as visualization and positive self-talk, to help players stay focused and engaged. Betchart also shares his experience working with coaches like Mike Brown to incorporate mental skills training into team culture. Graham's Bio Graham Betchart is a Mental Performance Coach with the Sacramento Kings - Recording Artist and Founder of Train The Mind, Author of the book Play Present. He is known for the concept "Play Present," which teaches that an athlete needs to stay focused on the task at hand and immediately move on to the next play despite results or outcomes. He is also noted for the "MVP" program (Mediate, Visualize, Positive affirmation), a sports psychology mental training tool, as well as "WIN" (What is Important Now), which asserts that a player can only control attitude, effort, and focus. Notable athletes Betchart has coached include Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Ben Simmons, the first overall picks for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 NBA drafts, respectively. https://www.palmsdownbasketball.com/ https://coachingyouthhoops.com/ www.coachingyouthhoopsmasterclass.com www.basketballcoachesclinic.com https://teachhoops.com/ basketballplaycreator.com Want More Funnel Down Defense https://coachcollins.podia.com/funnel-down-defense [Facebook Group . Carrie Richardson is a successful entrepreneur, having scaled three service-based businesses from zero to seven figures in the last ten years. But she got her start in an unexpected place: In a fitness center, cleaning weights at four in the morning. This is the compelling story of how Carrie earned her sobriety, built multiple award-winning companies, met her husband and started a thriving consulting company. It serves as a great reminder that no matter what rung of the ladder you're on, you can climb all the way to the top. Carrie Richardson founded Managed Sales Pros in Winnipeg, MB, Canada in 2013, and Everywhere Managed LLC in Las Vegas, NV in 2016 until its sale in 2020. Carrie began her business as a solopreneur making phone calls by herself - and the demand for outbound cold calling quickly surpassed her ability to fulfill on her own. Carrie bootstrapped a home-based business into two award-winning niche-focused call centers. Carrie graduated from the Eureka Project Technology Incubator in 2016, the same year Managed Sales Pros was named the 25th fastest-growing company in Canada by Profit Magazine. Everywhere Managed was founded in 2016 to support US-based technology manufacturers that required US-based outbound sales development teams. Everywhere Managed hired almost exclusively out of workforce reentry programs in Nevada. Carrie and her team developed a one-of-a-kind on-the-job training program for technology sales. The Everywhere Managed unique approach to employee development earned Carrie an Athena Leadership nomination for advancing women in the workforce. Everywhere Managed was 100% female owned and managed, and all executive team members were promoted from within after being outbound agents. Carrie was inducted into the Las Vegas Women's Hall of Fame for the achievement, and to date has been the launch pad for two successful entrepreneurs, four sales development leaders (six figure earners with stock in fast-growing tech firms) and has helped over 50 employees move from social assistance to self-sufficiency. In October 2020, the omnichannel marketing agency EBQuickstart acquired Everywhere Managed. In 2021, Carrie co-founded Richardson & Richardson with her husband Ian to help small business owners create and execute process-driven, repeatable sales and marketing programs after they have solved for all systemic challenges in their business. Carrie has found that most companies start out believing they have a sales or marketing problem, when in reality they are also experiencing financial, service delivery, staffing, and communication challenges that are impacting their ability to win and retain clients. Richardson & Richardson Consulting helps to identify areas for improvement in those areas and beyond. Carrie's journey began with a powerful origin story Carrie always loved selling. She was self-taught, a natural born salesperson. But when she decided to get sober, she faced unexpected obstacles: Sales jobs usually came with boozy lunches that made it easy to fall off the wagon. Being a determined and process-minded person, Carrie saw that her course had to change. She quit sales and landed a job at a gym with a four a.m. shift. Carrie had to clean the gym, answer the phones, and stand at the front desk while she worked to become a certified personal trainer. It was hard, humbling work. Setting her ego aside, Carrie meticulously scrubbed the weights clean every morning - and was spotted by the manager. Soon after, she was called into the office. Thinking she was going to get fired, she was surprised when her manager told her that she deserved a big promotion - with a massive pay raise. Carrie never forgot that moment. Someone gave her a chance and believed in her. Her work was recognized. It inspired her to build companies that truly support people - no matter what they're going through. When Carrie left her job at the gym, she decided to return to sales. It wasn't long before she started her own company staffed with telemarketers niched into the world of IT. A lesson in giving people a chance When she started her own call centers, Carrie encountered major staffing challenges. As she jokes herself, nobody grows up wanting to become a telemarketer - and HR was wasting time chasing candidates who did not want the job. This challenge led Carrie to think creatively. She decided to begin hiring candidates from economic development agencies. Many were coming to work from jail or rehab, and many were experiencing food and housing insecurity. Carrie saw an opportunity to help them succeed. The call centers hired people who needed positive work experience and even provided food and housing support. Carrie got to watch them build better lives - buying their first cars, getting married, having children and even starting their own businesses. Some of her former employees have launched their very own call centers, using systems they learned working at Everything Managed. After being given a chance herself, Carrie handed out second chances to hundreds of individuals, effectively changing the lives of them and their families. Carrie's advice to entrepreneurs: Build it better Carrie Richardson loves numbers, and she hates wasted time. When asked about her greatest advice for beginning entrepreneurs, she recommends that we focus our marketing efforts on things that produce real, tangible results. Rather than just shooting out messages on LinkedIn and hoping for a response, Carrie suggests that you take stock of what works for you, and what doesn't. Is your website working for you? Are your cold calls being answered? Are you getting the results you want? If not, it might be time to refocus your energy - or hire Richardson & Richardson Consulting for professional guidance. Quotes “Most IT companies - like most other companies - start their business and grab a couple clients that are low-hanging fruit. They might take a couple from the previous company they worked for, or they build their business initially by supporting their parents' friends. But they're only used to closing referral-based sales appointments. They build up their company entirely from word of mouth and referrals. When these leads stop coming in, they don't know what to do. By the time they call a company like mine, they should have called a year before!” “I don't think you should ignore any opportunity to prospect. Try all of it. Measure it and see if you can improve on it! If you see that sending twenty LinkedIn messages means that two will respond, awesome. How do you get three people to respond? But don't just send out messages all day, willy-nilly. To me, that's not sales or marketing because it can't be measured.” “Your website should translate to dollars out the bottom of your funnel. But most people aren't measuring it.” “Work with professionals up front. Make major investments in viability before you start investing in head count.” “What are you measuring? What KPI's are you reporting on? What are your accountability checkpoints?” “We hired people right out of jail, and right out of rehab. They might not have made it past screening for other jobs. Some were experiencing food insecurity or homelessness. We had a food bank in our office. If you were struggling between paychecks, we had resources. We provided breakfast and lunch for everyone. We helped people pay for apartments.” “We started watching peoples' lives change. They would come in to work after getting their hair done, for the first time since starting work for us. They would buy their first car, get married, or have a baby. Watching peoples' lives change was incredible.” “We worked with economic development agencies. They had people who were like, ‘Help me find a job! I need to work.'” “Yeah, this is your job today - but let me tell you about my life. Let me tell you where all of this took me! Cleaning the handles of some weights took me to a job that allowed me to save enough money to train with UFC kickboxers in Thailand. I did so many amazing things. And all of them came from being humble enough to take a job that I thought was a little bit beneath me.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for Richardson & Richardson Consulting at https://randr.consulting/ Watch on Youtube: “Make Smart Business Decisions with Carrie Richardson”, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CICPia7wA4 Listen to Carrie and Ian Richardson's podcast, “What's Important Now,” on Buzzsprout: https://win.buzzsprout.com/ Connect with Carrie Richardson on LinkedIn at http://LinkedIn.com/in/tinfoilhat2

Help your team WIM by gaining clarity on What's Important NOW.
And Its Antidote (Found in Spit!) In our last +1, we spent a little more time with Brian Cain and his wisdom on the fact that “depression is obsession with the past, anxiety is obsession about the future, and optimal performance is obsession about the present.” All of which begged the question: What are YOU obsessed about these days? And… All of that led to my admonition to activate our Soul Force by getting our Energy to Heroic levels and Focusing it on What's Important NOW all day every day. Today I want to revisit the topic and bring another peak performance guru to the party to share HIS wisdom on the subject. We'll go old school and invite Dale Carnegie to join us. As you almost certainly know, Carnegie wrote one of the all-time best-selling personal development books How to Win Friends and Influence People. He wrote that book in 1936. It's sold over 30 million copies. (Check out the Notes for more.) What you may not know is that he wrote another great book called How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. That book was written in 1948. 6 million copies of that book have been sold as well. (Check out the Notes for more.) In How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, Carnegie echoes Cainer's wisdom about focusing on the PRESENT to deal with any potential depression and anxiety. He tells us: “George Bernard Shaw was right. He summed it all up when he said: ‘The secret of being miserable is to have the leisure to bother about whether you are happy or not.' So don't bother to think about it! Spit on your hands and get busy. Your blood will start circulating; your mind will start ticking—and pretty soon this whole positive upsurge of life in your body will drive worry from your mind. Get busy. Keep busy. It's the cheapest kind of medicine there is on this earth—and one of the best.” There ya go. Feeling stressed? Perfect. That's part of a good, noble life. The moment you quit thinking you should be exonerated from the pain of uncertainty and the pain of hard work will be one of the most powerful, antifragile confidence-building moments of your life! Now… Spit on your hands and get busy doing your best at whatever is in front of you. RIGHT. NOW. Gremlins come back to the party a minute or three later? Perfect. Repeat. Get back to work. Focusing your Energy on What's Important Now. Not once in a while and not only when you feel like it. All day, every day. Especially when? TODAY.
Past? Future? Present? = Depression, Anxiety, Optimal Performance Not too long ago, we spent some time with my friend Brian Cain—who happens to be, in my opinion, at least tied for first as THE world's best mental toughness coach. One particular line from his 10 Pillars of Mental Performance Mastery has been popping up in my brain and I want to make sure we take a moment to chat about it. Here it is. Brian tells us (via Coach Kenny in his fable): “Remember, depression is obsession with the past, anxiety is obsession about the future, and optimal performance is obsession about the present.” Let's think about that for a moment… Depression is obsession about the PAST. Anxiety is obsession about the FUTURE. Optimal performance? That requires an obsession with the PRESENT. Of course, that's a deliberately hyperbolic oversimplification of depression and anxiety. And… It's a powerful perspective. All of which begs the question: What are YOU obsessed about these days? I repeat: “Remember, depression is obsession with the past, anxiety is obsession about the future, and optimal performance is obsession about the present.” Here's to activating our Soul Force by getting our Energy to Heroic levels and Focusing it on What's Important NOW all day every day. Especially, as always, TODAY. Anxiety and depression BEGONE. Optimal performance LET'S GO!!
Welcome to Fight in Progress! Mike Baldwin joined the Grossman team after a distinguished law enforcement career in Arizona. Over his 20 plus year career, Mike served in a number of roles: Patrol, Field Training Officer, SWAT Operator, Sergeant, and Lead Detective in the Major Felons Unit. As a Detective, Mike honed his craft and became arguably his department's best interviewer and gained admissions and confessions from suspects who committed a variety of crimes. Over the years he received multiple departmental awards, citations for outstanding police work, and the respect of his peers. Mike served as an example and mentor to several young detectives and found this experience to be extremely rewarding. For seven years, Mike served as the Sheepdog for his church home in AZ. He started a volunteer security team at his local church in which church members and guests (Sheep) were watched over by the security team (Sheepdogs) to protect them against the Wolf. This ministry continues in his absence. After obtaining an MBA with an emphasis on Strategic Innovation, Mike retired from law enforcement and joined the Grossman team. He hit the ground running on day 1 and has proven to be a valuable addition to the Grossman team. His strategy is to focus on the acronym WIN (What's Important Now). Mike handles the day-to-day operation of Grossman on Truth and interacts with people and agencies wishing to schedule a presentation. Mike is a devoted husband, father, and Christian man who seeks to honor God in what he does. (Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches”). We have one wild and precious life, so how are you using your time to cultivate that life? Then decide where you are spending your time, and if it aligns with what you value.Once we figure out what we are striving for, we can decide with more clarity to WIN (What's Important Now). Then it is not just the actions you take. Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is usually my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life. This episode is something different. It's an experimental format that I'm super excited about, and it's back by popular demand. This is an episode that scratches an itch I've had for years. I am not always able to listen to every great podcast episode out there, even when they are by some of my closest friends. My team edited them together, and here we are! This episode is a compilation of 15-to-30-minute clips from some of the best podcasters — and also best interviewees – in the world and certainly some of my favorites. At the beginning of each clip, you will hear an intro from the host and where to find their work and podcast. At the end, I'll also share one or two of my favorite clips from episodes of The Tim Ferriss Show. You can view this episode as a buffet, and I strongly suggest that you check out the shows included. Of the 10 things on your to-do-list what is the most important item on there to help you move closer to your goal? Stop running around aimlessly doing things, stop meeting with people just to met with them. Ask yourself what's important about this meeting, person, event, moment. “I know I improve my odds of success when I'm able to work with anybody who has gone before me. I'm amazed how many people are willing to freely give of their time especially when we show up and we pay attention, and we do what's being advised. It's amazing how many opportunities are out there when we're ready to listen and then put some things into action.” – Rae Ostrander Selected links and people mentioned from this episode: Green Thumb REIT Alcoholics Anonymous Tony Robbins Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins What's Important Now by John Kuypers Connect with REIN Canada REIN Canada CEO@reincanada.com REIN Channel Facebook Instagram Twitter [02:08] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest, Rae Ostrander. [03:27] Rae and Patrick get down to business as Rae shares a snippet about what he's currently working on. [04:32] He's not getting off that easy! Patrick swings open the door, to get a bigger picture of Rae's business strategy and the markets they work within, which is a little against the grain! [07:40] Gary, Indiana? Rae explains how they find these markets, what attracts him to pursue the properties and the commitment he makes to reveal their intrinsic value. He further expands on how they add value, not for future necessarily (although that's nice too) but for cash flow, and the exit strategy the best suits their investors. [11:44] Relationship ROI. Rae expands on the Gary, Indiana property to demonstrate how they took over a situation that both solved the seller's problem and provided them an opportunity to build relationships with the tenant clients. Investing in upgrades and value-adds creates a community based around dignity and respect, where a potential tenant is happy to pay a little more rent to have a home they are proud of. Everyone wins. [16:27] Rae talks about the real estate markets on the US side of the border with price drops and availability, plus the opportunity he sees within that market that many others don't. [18:35] Creativity as a product of necessity. Rae shares his journey from theology studies and struggling financially to the realization it was ok to make some money! By doing that, he could create the opportunity to volunteer with the churches and non-profits he loved rather than rely on them to make ends meet. [19:45] Rae delves into his own story of troubled teens which brought him to seek recovery and sobriety and within that, incredible tools for self-discovery and development. Naïveté played a helpful part in fueling his motivation to learn and absorb the business of real estate investing. His continued work towards good mental health keeps him aligned in what he wants and what he's doing toward his own success. [22:44] The fundamental difference between the “doers” and the “I-want-to-doers”. Rae's time in sales, and coaching brought him some interesting insights around people's motivation and willingness to do or not do, the work. His own coach and mentor in real estate kept him grounded in a 90-day challenge to stick to his lane and work through a strategy to completion. [27:24] Before we commit to things, it is well worth some evaluation. Answer the questions around why we want to commit to a program, a work-out routine or learning a new language. Is it our ego leading the charge or a genuine desire for self-improvement and elevating our experience? Are we making decisions to abdicate responsibility, or can we commit to finding the true purpose behind the actions we desire to take and take them? [33:40] Rae walks through some of the questions and guidance he offers his clients before they begin their investment journey. It's really important to get honest about what we want, and to understand what we're investing in (pro tip: do your homework!] [39:29] Rae provides insight into his path as an entrepreneur and how it occurred for him - what his motivations were and how they have evolved as he has. Ganel-Lyn and Scott also discuss where the Saints are in this week's revelations and how they've been trying so hard to do what God wants them to do. Scott tells a story about an experience in which he knew God really loves him because of the “What's Important Now” principle. Invitation: When it comes to your relationship with the temple, what is the most important thing you can do now to hold to this relationship and keep your covenants?

This week we talked with Dr. Deb Gustafson on how she is again applying Jim Collins' flywheel principle, this time as an Assistant Superintendent, to develop a district office staff that relentlessly focuses on supporting its teachers so that they can in turn relentlessly focus on supporting their kids. We extended that idea of having a disciplined mindset through Essentialism author, Greg McKeown's discussion of setting a priority versus priorities by asking the question "What's Important Now?"
Jay Johnson is a great interview. But he's ready to stop talking and get to work. That's the vibe I got when he wrapped up his home run of a press conference on Monday, impressing the thousands of Tiger fans watching from home as he sold his vision of the program. But Johnson loves to win, and to him that means What's Important Now. And what's important now is getting his roster and staff finalized and preparing for a run at Omaha. Not in two years or three years. Next year. Because he's ready to win. And he's ready to work. Thankfully, we caught him for 25 minutes Monday and asked him about his background in coaching, recruiting and developing Kris Bryant, teaching the mental skills of baseball, and his vision for the Tigers moving forward. Enjoy this conversation, and don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where we will be dropping clips from the interview all week.
This is a spin on the "WIN" (What's Important Now) technique we introduced in a previous episode.
Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those.---Remember when I talked about how we should ditch the gatekeepers back in April - check your podcatcher for a link - Well, it's now time to talk about the other aspect of gatekeeping: entitlement - specifically about how some gamers feel entitled to something _because_ they play games. As with gatekeepers, it's all nonsense.Series IntroThis is The Waffling Taylors Raw with Jay, a series of shorter episodes of indefinite length. These episodes will cover shorter topics which don't really fit will within the scope of the show, or topics that I want to cover in my own way. That's not to say that we won't cover these topics in the main show, but I'd like to take a whack at them here, first.I can't guarantee that all of these shorter episodes will be as deep or technical as this one. But I wanted to start big.Anyway, let's get to it.Entitlement in GamingThere are lots of definitions of entitlement, but this is the one that I'm going to use for this episode:the feeling that you have the right to do or have what you want without having to work for it or deserve it, just because of who you are- Cambridge DictionaryI'm sure that we all know someone who behaves as though they are entitled to something that they might not actually be entitled to. But this episode is all about the folks who have that sense of entitlement specifically because they are gamers.I'm sure you've seen something like this in the past:I've bought and played every entry in this series, and they need to make another one because I want them to- some twitter userIf you remember the fall out from the ending of the Mass Effect trilogy, you'll have seen this when the fans rallied around and forced EA to create a different ending to the game because they didn't like the original. This is an example of entitlement by gamers - although there's more to it than just that - I take the stance that games have the ability to be art (especially story-driven ones) after all, someone - or a team of someones - has to write the story, and stories are art. There's an argument here about whether the creator has the final say in the art that they create, or whether it should be down to the consumers of that art. But that's for smarter people than me to talk about. The point that I'm attempting to drive towards - and remember, all of this is my opinion - is that you aren't entitled to anything simply because you play video games. To explain why let's talk about how games development companies work.Games Development Companies Are Businesses FirstSo, the first thing that you need to know about games development companies is that they are businesses first and foremost. This means that they have someone - or a group of someones - overlooking almost every decision that the company makes, to ensure that they make the most profit possible. And that's another thing that I feel most gamers forget: almost every company on the planet aims to make as much profit for as little investment as possible. To quote my good friend Steve Worthy:Focus on WIN: What's Important Now?- Steve WorthyAs a side note: if you're interested in business and how to be better at leadership, you should listen to his podcast: Retail Leadership with Steve Worthy - check your podcatcher for a link. This means that a company should always be looking at what is important now, and for the majority of games development companies it isn't the developers, designers, and artists who decide what "important" means. That decision is made by the shareholders, whose main goal is for the company to make money. Whilst the employees of the development company might want to create theGreatest game evar!- some game developerthe shareholders might want to release something as soon as possible in order to get that important injection of cash.I hate to bring up Cyberpunk 2077, but I just did. To be fair, that particular title had a _lot_ of problems, the least of which was the rush to release it for Christmas 2020.Full Show NotesA full transcript of this "raw with Jay" episode is available over in the full show notes - because there are loads of books you can read, and web resources. How do you feel about gamer entitlement? Am I just having an "old man shouts at the clouds moment"? Did you catch the completely coincidental Twitter exchange that I had with TopLoader over on Twitter about this very subject? Maybe one of the most important questions you could ask yourself today is, "What's Important Now?" I would love to take credit for the power of this question but it was brought to my attention while reading "Essentialism" by Greg Mckeown. He said that it is this question that has lead to an outstanding culture of winning for the New Zealand All Blacks (the most dominate mens rugby team of all time). What's Important Now??? Such a basic question that I know will help you so profoundly like it has for me... BUT If you don't do the necessary work up front, no matter how often you ask it, you might miss the real answer. Let me know what you think of this Tuesday Tuneup. I know for me "What's Important Now" is getting some of y’all to rate us on iTunes. It means a ton and lets us know that your enjoying and benefiting from the work we are trying to do. As always hit me up if you have any question or need a little nudge to take the first step in building the life you are proud of!

Coach Jorge Capestany is our guest for Episode 6 of the Tennis IQ Podcast. Jorge is one of only eleven people worldwide that has earned the distinction of Master Professional with the USPTA and International Master Professional with the PTR. Jorge is also a certified Mental Toughness Specialist through the Human Performance Institute based on the life work of the legendary Dr. Jim Loehr, and he holds a USTA Sports Science certification. He has coached three US national champions (Gold Ball winners) and players from his programs have won more than 180 High School State Tennis Championships in Michigan. In this interview, we discuss Jorge's background as a junior tennis player and his introduction to the world of coaching. We talk about the importance of having a well-rounded game from a young age which includes the development of every shot and style of play. We also discussed the use and training of "sabotage" tactics within his tennis program, which allows players to disrupt the rhythm of their opponents and make themselves tougher to compete against. Lastly, we discuss Jorge's concept of Tennis IQ, which was part of the inspiration behind the name of this podcast; Jorge describes how he conceptualizes Tennis IQ and breaks down this concept into three levels. Interview highlights: 3:38 - Jorge describes his introduction to the sport of tennis 5:32 - The importance of playing multiple sports as a kid for athletic development 8:10 - Jorge talks about how he started coaching and the development of his coaching philosophy 13:58 - The concept of "Tennis IQ" and its three levels 30:17 - Seeing tennis as a combat sport and looking for ways to sabotage the game of your opponent 37:43 - The importance of having a clear game-plan going into a point to utilize your strengths and target your opponents weaknesses, and how this can be trained in practice 43:07 - How competing regularly and playing more practice matches leads to tennis players developing mental toughness 51:43 - How tennis players can focus on the present moment and the next point by directing their thoughts to the acronym WIN (What's Important Now?) 54:28 - Playing "mission-based tennis" and having a clear intention going into every point 58:17 - The importance of having options instead of just playing one-dimensional tennis 1:00:50 - Establishing a junior tennis development plan and helping players improve on the five most important aspects of the game at every age To learn more about Josh and Brian's backgrounds and sport psychology businesses, go to TiebreakerPsych.com and PerformanceXtra.com. In our last +1, we talked about the fact that, if we could figure out how to take 30 EXPONENTIAL steps, we’d be able to hop in a rocket and go around the Earth two DOZEN times. Rather than get 90 feet down the street, we’d get a few BILLION steps further in our joyful jaunt around the Earth. That’s crazy. And, well, that’s the power of aggregating and compounding seemingly small changes that can have huge impacts on our lives as we watch the magic exponentially grow. I LOVE all the metaphors we can use to think about the power of just showing up again and again and again. We’ve talked about the doubling penny, collecting coins, melting ice cubes, hitting the rock, figuring out combination locks, and rocking marginal gains. Obviously, the metaphors are just metaphors but they all make the same primary point: It’s all about CONSISTENCY. We need to show up again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and … BOOM! Magic. Which is why I was so fired up to make a little distinction while I was preparing for our Mastery Series session on Work in our Module on Carpe Diem. The basic theme of the class is how to create “Genius Work vs. Mediocre Work.” (I’ll save the details on that distinction for another +1.) As I was preparing for the class, I knew I was going to focus on the equation we’ve been talking about lately: Astonishing Work = Time x (Energy x Focus x What’s Important Now) or: T x (E x F x W.I.N.) Then I had a wonderful epiphany. I added a little “C” right at the end of that equation. Like so: T x (E x F x W.I.N.)c A choir of angels began to sing as I thought through the implications of the new, Optimized equation: Genius Work = Time x (Energy x Focus x What’s Important Now)Consistency I quickly made some notes. If your Energy is a 100 and your Focus is a 100 and you’re working on a 100-Level Important thing you’d get 1 million points of awesome. That’s 1,000 (!) times more awesome than if your Energy, Focus and WIN was at a 10. But… Get this. If we believe CONSISTENCY is an exponential force multiplier, then we’d be better off plodding along at the lower numbers but at least doing so consistently. Get this. Although (100 x 100 x 100) is 1,000,000 points of awesome, we’ve gotta know that if we get a ZERO in the consistency score then (100 x 100 x 100)0 = ZERO. Whereas, although (10 x 10 x 10) is only 1,000 points of awesome, we’ve gotta know that if we get a ONE HUNDRED in the consistency score then (10 x 10 x 10)100 = a HUGE number. It almost breaks the calculator coming in at 1e+300. ← That’s a 1 followed by THREE HUNDRED Zeros. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Now, here’s the kicker. What do you think would happen if we were able to get ALL of our variables up to a 100? Our Energy is a 100. Our Focus is a 100. Our W.I.N. is a 100. AND… Our Consistency is a 100. What’s 1,000,000 to the power of 100? Can you guess? … Answer: It’s INFINITY. And, that’s Today’s +1. Want to have fun seeing just how Limitless you can go? Get your Energy Optimized. Get your Focus Optimized. Get your ability to focus on What’s Important Now Optimized. And then go do it CONSISTENTLY. Starting Today. +100 +100 +100 to the 100th power.

Whereas, although (10 x 10 x 10) is only 1,000 points of awesome, we’ve gotta know that if we get a ONE HUNDRED in the consistency score then (10 x 10 x 10)100 = a HUGE number. It almost breaks the calculator coming in at 1e+300. ← That’s a 1 followed by THREE HUNDRED Zeros. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Now, here’s the kicker. What do you think would happen if we were able to get ALL of our variables up to a 100? Our Energy is a 100. Our Focus is a 100. Our W.I.N. is a 100. AND… Our Consistency is a 100. What’s 1,000,000 to the power of 100? Can you guess? … Answer: It’s INFINITY. And, that’s Today’s +1. Want to have fun seeing just how Limitless you can go? Get your Energy Optimized. Get your Focus Optimized. Get your ability to focus on What’s Important Now Optimized. And then go do it CONSISTENTLY. Starting Today. +100 +100 +100 to the 100th power.
Continuing our brief foray through Jim Qwik’s brain and book, let’s talk about the power of getting into Flow. Jim tells us that being able to flip the switch and drop into a powerful Flow state is one of the keys to tapping into our (Limitless!!) superpowers. He quotes Steven Kotler in The Rise of Superman to make his point. Here’s how Steven puts it: “To put it another way: flow is the telephone booth where Clark Kent changes clothes, the place from where Superman emerges.” I LOVE that image of Clark Kent stepping into the phone booth of Flow and coming out as Superman. Reminds me of this +1 on Clark Kent flipping the switch and striking a power pose to get his Superman on. And… As I read this passage (and chapter from Limitless), I was reminded of our recent +1 on our new Astonishing Work Equation. Recall, if we want to REALLY crush it, we’d be wise to focus on three variables: Astonishing Quality Work = Time x (Energy x Focus x W.I.N.) I made the point that, math wise, if your Energy is at a 10 and your Focus is at a 10 and you’re working on the 10 What’s Important Now task, you can work ONE hour and still get a 1,000 on the Astonishing Quality Work scale. But… If your Energy is at a 1 and your Focus is at a 1 and you’re working on a 1-level What’s Important Now task, you’d have to work 1,000 (!) hours to match your Astonishing Quality Work score. BUT… You know what? That’s actually not even accurate. The reality is, when we’re REALLY plugged in, we can create at levels that are simply IMPOSSIBLE to create at in any non-awesome state. As such, I think we should swap out our 1 to 10 scale for a 1 to 100 to make the point even more powerfully. So… On a 1 to 100 scale, if your Energy is at a 100 and your Focus is at a 100 and you’re working on the 100 What’s Important Now task, you can work an hour and get 1 MILLION Astonishing Work points. Drop your Energy to a 10 and your Focus to a 10 and your W.I.N. to a 10 and your 1,000 is 1/1000th of what you could have done. Yep. That’s about right. Today’s +1. How’s your SuperFlow Math looking these days? What’s working Energy + Focus + W.I.N.-wise? What needs some work? And what can will you do to Optimize?! Here’s to stepping into the telephone booth of Flow and tapping into our Superpowers. TODAY!!!!

Author of Underspent, Rachel Smith has gone from jet setting international transport consultant to being on the Australian government's Jobkeeper allowance within a matter of weeks and she's taking the time to alter her business offerings during COVID-19. We talked about her book Underspent and how it might be oh so handy for people post-Pandemic, when a recession becomes reality (which, as of publishing, it is), and how people have been changing their transport habits, walking to the shops more and buying less. We speculate about whether that's something that will last post-COVID-19. At the time of recording, that seemed a distinct possibility but this week we've seen traffic dial up and the post-lockdown spending spree begin. Not to mention riots in the US and other countries. Seriously, if I had been on another planet for the past 6 months and come back, I wouldn't believe what has happened to our world. This is What's Important Now as we slowly shift into the Post-Pandemic world. About Rachel Rachel is a Transport Planning, Demand Management & Behaviour Change Expert. A significant way to battle anxiety and stress is to stay in the moment. So often we fly into the future with “what if?” thoughts in the future that cause us anxiety, when really we could substitute thoughts of “even if” to reduce stress. We also seem to fly into the past with thoughts of “woulda, coulda, shoulda” that seems to give us feelings of guilt. The tool we give today is to stay in the moment, accept things as they are. Using questions like NBA (what’s my Next Best Action) or WIN (What’s Important Now?” can help us quit our novice time travel, and focus on the present moment.

Gerry Hussey is my guest on this week’s Real Health podcast and to call him a sports psychologist doesn’t do him or the topics we discuss, justice. While Gerry does explain the work he does with elite athletes in helping them to succeed, the reality is, what Gerry teaches is applicable to all our lives. It is about making the most from your life, living life fully and asking yourself the hard questions that need to be answered. ‘WIN - What’s Important Now?’ are the guiding principles that Gerry discusses with me on the show. “Every one of us is only one question away from a major breakthrough,” he says. “Deep in our heart we know what we want. Do you want to spend the rest of your life hiding? Would you not like a chance of really living this one short life? We need to be inspired by a vision of the future. Start making decisions on the person you want to be.” Listen and be inspired. Recently, Eric Watilo issues a document to parks in his region of Washington State Parks giving ideas to make sure visitor's have a better experience when they visit parks. When I saw the information Eric was getting out to people in parks, I knew I had to share it with you. Eric did not create this list for people to read and check a box. This is content meant to be discussed and considered. Eric joins me on the Park Leaders Show to discuss his list of 12 Steps to Enhance a Visitor Experience. If you are reading this in email, CLICK HERE to listen to the episode and go in depth with the 12 Steps. 12 Steps to Enhancing a Visitor's Experience Smile – As simple as this may seem, not everyone smiles. Greet Them – Use words to make them feel welcome. In-Person is Priority – Never break off a face-to-face interaction with a visitor to answer the telephone or speak with another employee. W.I.N – W.I.N stands for “What’s Important Now.” Please and Thank You – Say it. Say it often. We all like to hear please and thank you. You’re Welcome – Do not say “No Problem.” Use your manners and say "You're Welcome". Recognize Who You Work For – Every one of us in Parks is a government employee. It Is What You Say – What you say to a park visitor can strongly influence they experience have at the park. Find the Answer and Follow-up – From time to time a visitor will ask you a question you do not have the answer to. Instead of saying “I don’t know” and leaving it there, tell the visitor you do not know but that you will find out and get back to them. Make Time for the Visitor – I understand in parks it is not always possible to do this, but when you can take the time to show a visitor what they are looking for, you certainly should. “Thank You for Supporting Our Parks” – After every financial transaction you make with a customer, thank the guest for their support. Listen to Park Leaders Podcast – In particular, listen to this episode about customer service with Lee Cockerell. In addition to Eric Watilo's list, I have added for steps of my own to enhance a visitor's experience. You are putting on a Show Every day – At Disney World employees are called Cast Members because they play a role in the big show they put on every day. You may not be at Disney World, but you are putting on a show every day. Your personal problems don’t matter to the park visitor – I am not saying your personal problems don’t matter. I just want to be clear that your personal problems do not matter to the park visitor. Your issues should not get in the way of delivering top notch service. Wear the Hat – If you are a park ranger you need to wear the iconic flat hat when you interact with park visitors. If park visitors don’t get to see a park ranger often, then seeing you should meet their expectations. And they expect you to wear the flat hat. Serve like it is your mother – Have you ever had a loved one receive wonderful service? How did that make you feel? Your mother is special to you and you want others to treat her that way. This is exactly how you should treat every park visitor. Music for the Park Leaders Show is provided by Jason Harrod.

Buy Supermom vs Supermom Topic: 3 Simple Living Habits You Can Use Right Now Habit 1: When searching for a solution, start with yourself first. Chances are, just like Dorothy with the ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz, you had the power all along. Tap into resources you already have. Shop in your own closet, pantry, etc… When you work to solve your own problems, you are exercising your innovation muscles! Too often we ask someone else for an answer. At least Google it before you ask. By looking outside yourself, automatically you established a need...a need that didn’t exist. That makes you a consumer instead of a producer and plays right into the hands of the marketing messages we’re subjected to 3-5000 times a day. Habit 2: Often, establishing a simplicity habit involves establishing a framework that helps you deal with things in a predictable manner. Try experimenting with different frameworks to see what works for you! Here are 3 we use: The W-I-N Framework: One I’ve been using more and more lately is the WIN framework. WIN stands for “What’s Important Now” and Vanessa first heard about it in Greg McKeown's excellent book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. The Eisenhauer Matrix Framework: You’ve probably seen this one before, but just imagine a simple foursquare matrix. The vertical axis plots importance and the horizontal axis plots urgency. So if you picture the four squares, the top/left square is Box 1, Urgent & Important box. The top right is Box 2, Less Urgent & Important. Box 3 on the bottom/left is Less Important & Urgent. And finally, Box 4, Less Important & Less urgent, is on the bottom/right. The folks over at Eisenhauer.me did a great little video: Isn’t that the truth! “What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.” The S.I.M.P.L.E. Method of Organizing Framework: Another framework is Vanessa's S.I.M.P.L.E. Method© of organizing which she breaks down in great detail in her book Super Mom vs Supermom: Simplicity Tips for Busy Moms Here’s an outline: Strategize: • What are your needs? • How do you want your space to look, feel, and function like? Identify: • What’s working? • What’s not working? • What are your limitations of the space? • Draw or take pictures of the space. • Take measurements. Make Piles: • Clear your space one area at a time. • Work from left to right and top to bottom. • Sort into general categories…like with like. • Don’t edit yet! Make the piles first to see what and how much you have. Pare Down and Edit: • After you make piles then tackle one pile at a time…one item at a time. • Decide: Do I USE it? Do I LOVE it? Do I NEED it? • If yes…KEEP it! • If no…LET it GO! • When you’re done editing, remove unwanted and unneeded items immediately! Let's Organize: • Assign zones. • Keep like items with like items. • Put it where you use it. • Put frequently used items within arms reach. • Make sure things are easy to get to…think accessibility; open bins, simple systems, etc. • Don’t compromise safety for organization. • Use containers and containers within containers. • Label, label, label! Evaluate and Maintain: • Establish routines. • Develop habits.
