Mike Davis-Marks: What a Nuclear Submariner Knows About High-Pressure Decision Making & Servant Leadership

Welcome to TheInquisitor Podcast

In this episode of The Inquisitor Podcast, host Marcus Cauchi speaks with Michael Davis-Marks, a veteran of the Royal Navy who commanded a nuclear-powered submarine and now focuses on leadership development and advocating for the veteran community. They discuss decision-making under pressure, the unique transferable skills veterans bring to civilian life, and the critical differences between traditional and effective leadership models like servant leadership. The conversation highlights the importance of training, teamwork, delegation, building trust, and fostering a culture where people feel valued and empowered to do their best work. Michael Davis-Marks: Spent 36 years in the Royal Navy, primarily as a submariner, including commanding a nuclear-powered submarine. Served in the British Embassy during 9-11. Since leaving the Navy 13 years ago, he has focused on leadership development and culture. He is also the managing editor of TheVeteran.uk, a publication that gives voice to the veteran community. His mission is to amplify the lived experience of veterans, challenge outdated stereotypes, and advocate for what armed forces veterans can offer to organisations, employers, and society. Key Discussion Points: Veterans as a Valuable Asset: Veterans possess extraordinary transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and commitment, which can be enormously helpful to organisations and society as a whole. There are approximately 2.2 million veterans in the UK, about a million of whom are of working age, representing a significant pool of talent. Challenging Stereotypes: The common stereotype of military people as "Colonel Blimp" or a "shouty sergeant" is inaccurate for the vast majority of veterans. Veteran Mindset: Many veterans, including Michael, don't initially realise how much they have to offer civilian life due to a self-effacing mindset developed through military training that prioritises the team over the individual. Decision Making Under Stress: The military trains individuals to remain calm and think clearly in high-pressure situations. The ability to make good decisions under stress is crucial and can be developed through training and building resilience. Leadership Defined: Leadership is not about telling people what to do. It's about motivating and inspiring people, helping them become better versions of themselves. Servant Leadership: This model posits that the leader is there to serve the people subordinate to them, helping them realise their full potential. It's about looking after the people in your charge, not just being in charge. Delegation vs. Abdication: Leaders who spend their time "doing" are stealing learning opportunities and growth from their people. Empowering people to work things out for themselves, rather than always providing the answer, is crucial for development. Michael's rule was "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions". Allowing people to "have a go," even if they make mistakes in a safe environment, fosters learning. Creating Conditions for Trust: Trust begins with the leader's self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and empathy. It is developed by assigning low-risk tasks initially, being a mentor and coach, gently nudging rather than directing, and providing encouragement and positive feedback. Leadership is Trainable: While some may be "born leaders," leadership skills can be taught and developed through training and practical experience. Openness to feedback and the realisation that one is not perfect are key to improvement. The Staircase of Learning: This concept describes the progression from unconscious incompetence (not knowing what you don't know) through conscious incompetence and conscious competence to unconscious competence (second nature). Training and repetition are critical to moving through these stages and building resilience. Continuous Improvement: In the military, standard operating procedures were changed "all the time" because you can't stand still; "every day is a school day". Agility of thought is essential because plans often don't survive first contact. The Leader's Role: The leader's job is to create the conditions for their people to do their best work. Delegating tasks to competent people allows the leader to step back, maintain a strategic view, and avoid becoming a bottleneck or single point of failure. The Importance of People: People are the most important asset in any organisation, not just numbers on a spreadsheet. Treat them as people. A high staff retention rate is often a sign of a happy and well-led company. People frequently leave jobs because of their boss, particularly if the boss prevents them from doing their best work. Beating people does not improve morale. Advice for New Managers: "Get Off Your Arse" (GOYA) is crucial advice. New managers should spend their initial time listening, walking around, asking curious questions about what people do, what they like/dislike, and what can be improved. Taking notes shows you are listening and helps you remember. Getting out and talking to people makes them feel important and that they belong. This approach should be routine, not just for the first few days. Lesson for a Younger Self: Michael would tell his 23-year-old self that he knows much less than he thinks and is surrounded by people who can help. He would advise working on relationships with others to learn and grow together as a team, emphasising that people are the most important aspect in everything. Recommended Resources: "Turn the Ship Around" by David Marquette (Discusses an "I intend to" model of leadership empowering the team). "Always Start With Why" by Simon Sinek.   Navigating friendships can be complex, and sometimes, it becomes clear that a particular friendship isn't sustainable. Here are five warning signs that a friendship might not work out: Consistent One-Sidedness: If you consistently feel like you're the one putting in all the effort—initiating contact, planning activities, or providing emotional support—it's a red flag. Healthy friendships involve reciprocity. Lack of Mutual Respect: Disrespect can manifest in various ways, such as belittling your opinions, dismissing your feelings, or disregarding your boundaries. If you feel consistently undervalued or disrespected, the friendship is likely to be damaging. Frequent Drama or Toxicity: While occasional disagreements are normal, constant drama, negativity, or toxic behavior can drain your energy and well-being. If the friendship consistently creates more stress than joy, it's a significant warning sign. Erosion of Trust: Trust is fundamental to any strong friendship. If your trust has been repeatedly broken through lies, betrayals, or breaches of confidence, it's difficult to maintain a healthy connection. Feeling Worse After Interactions: Ideally, spending time with friends should leave you feeling uplifted or supported. If you consistently feel drained, anxious, or negative after interacting with this person, it's a sign that the friendship is having a detrimental impact on your emotional health.   My three closest Best friends… and I believe you can really only have 1 best friend… but that is debatable- however I don't think you can have more than three from what I see in scripture… anywhoooo   Here are three common denominators in these relationships We don't have to talk all the time… we may go weeks, but we can easily pick up from where we left off. The trust and the friendship is long and trusted so much so that nobody ever panics… did I do something wrong… he hasn't texted or talked to me in weeks…. However we rarely go weeks without communicating.  2nd We are brutally honest… and it does not affect our friendships whatsoever - in the least.     Bike trip… what you said was right, how you said it made you look like a butthole…    3rd and I truly believe this is a huge one. We all have the same sense of humor… yes ours is twisted, and would probably offend some…maybe quite a few, but that is a bond that is unbreakable… and it gets us through the tough times with each other. When I am ready to punch babies in the face they will crack me up many times at my own expense and I love it. It keeps me grounded. If you saw our texts you would think we were in Junior high…

Agile Coaches' Corner
Maximizing Team Autonomy while Maintaining Accountability in Agile Frameworks with Dan Neumann

Agile Coaches' Corner

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2024 18:37

This week, your host, Dan Neumann, is discussing how to maximize Team autonomy while maintaining accountability within Agile Frameworks. In this episode, Dan defines the importance of autonomy and accountability in Agile. He explains the challenge faced when too much autonomy leads to a lack of accountability while, on the contrary, too much control inhibits innovation and why leaders should prioritize this delicate balance.   Key Takeaways What is Autonomy in Agile? Autonomy is the ability to self-manage, make decisions, and drive solutions. Give Teams the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done. Motivated individuals are the key to success! A Manager must welcome changing requirements but needs the Team to maintain focus. Remember, a Team must harness change for the customer's competitive advantage. Autonomy benefits Agile teams by making decisions faster and fostering creativity and innovation. The Role of Accountability in Agile: Accountability in the Agile context means taking ownership of work, meeting commitments, and ensuring transparency. An Agile Coach should account for progress toward the desired outcome. When things go wrong, slow, or burst, the coach should explain why it happened, what measures were in place to help prevent it, and what the team can do to prevent the problem from happening again. Accountability keeps Teams aligned with business outcomes and stakeholders' expectations. Key Strategies for Balancing Autonomy and Accountability: Clearly Defined Outcomes: Focus on the importance of clear goals, shared objectives, and transparency. Teams need freedom to achieve these goals but must stay accountable for delivering them. Tell it, write it, repeat it, and ask others to repeat it. Create a Culture of Trust: Trust between leaders and Teams drives autonomy. Trust the Team to make decisions, and they will take accountability for their outcomes. Use Agile Metrics Thoughtfully: Discuss key metrics like velocity, burn-down charts, and lead time. Always remember that metrics are tools for learning, not for punishment. Emphasize simplicity as the art of maximizing the amount of work not done. Boundary Setting (Guardrails): How Agile coaches and Scrum Masters can establish non-intrusive guardrails (e.g., WIP limits, capacity planning) to ensure teams are free to work without getting lost or overcommitting. Leadership's Role in Supporting Autonomy and Accountability: Some Leadership behaviors that empower teams are removing obstacles, giving space for innovation, innovation week, buffer in a Sprint, spikes, training resources, conferences, and coding retreats (among others). Agile coaches must highlight the need for regular feedback loops, such as retrospectives, to align accountability without micromanaging.   Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? Have you ever wondered why you seem to attract destructive people despite your kind heart and good intentions? This episode will help you understand and transform how you navigate relationships, allowing you to embrace your strengths while safeguarding your heart. People Pleasing: People pleasers are often generous and eager to make others happy, which can make them susceptible to manipulation. Without the ability to say no, people pleasers may find themselves overextended and exploited. Learn to buy time before committing and practice saying no without guilt. Loyalty: Loyalty is a noble trait, reflecting a commitment to relationships. However, blind loyalty can lead to staying in harmful relationships with habitual liars or abusers. Pair loyalty with discernment and wisdom to know when to break away from toxic situations. Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a core Christian virtue, emphasizing grace and mercy. However, endless forgiveness without consequences can enable continued abuse or neglect. Healthy forgiveness includes justice and setting boundaries, ensuring there are consequences for harmful actions. Forbearance: Forbearance promotes patience and tolerance, important in any relationship. Being passive and ignoring habitual sin or evil can be dangerous. Be intentional about forbearance and confront issues when necessary, following Ephesians 5:11 to expose deeds of darkness. Kindness: Kindness reflects God's love and compassion. Niceness without boundaries can lead to being used and misused. Be kind but firm, setting limits on unacceptable behavior without compromising your values. Selflessness: Selflessness mirrors Christ's sacrifice and service. Being overly selfless can lead to losing your identity and becoming an object in the relationship. Steward your life wisely, balancing self-care with serving others, and maintaining your individuality. Trust: Trust is fundamental to any healthy relationship. Naive trust can lead to betrayal and harm. Trust with discernment, recognizing when someone is not trustworthy and acting accordingly. As we discuss these virtues, remember that we are currently enrolling for Leslie's Moving Beyond People Pleasing program. This course is designed to help you apply these principles in your life. Visit leslievernick.com/peoplepleasingcourse to learn more and register. Final Thoughts: Embrace your Christian virtues but pair them with wisdom and discernment to protect yourself from toxic individuals. Taking care of yourself is not selfish, it's stewardship. Prioritize your well-being to better serve others and fulfill your God-given potential. Remember to consider the entire counsel of God, not just isolated verses, to guide your life and relationships. Thank you for joining us today. We hope this conversation helps you navigate your relationships more wisely and embrace your strengths while safeguarding your heart. Until next time, take care and stay true to your values.

In our latest episode, Stacey and Nims explore how the universe supports us, especially when things look different than expected. Often, we get caught up in trying to control what happens next instead of trusting in divine timing. Stacey and Nims discuss the importance of trusting the path you're on and finding a balance between relying on the universe and taking action toward your desired life. They share insights from their work with countless clients who have struggled with this concept and offer a new way of thinking and being. Imagine trusting that your journey is supported and that you are exactly where you're meant to be. It's time to trust the universe and divine timing—what is meant for you will find you. Remember, God's delays are not denials.Key Points to Trust:Trust in divine timing and take daily actions towards your goals.Trust that the universe has your back—do your part (Meet the universe halfway) and surrender your expectations on how the universe will deliver. What if the universe has bigger plans for you than you can imagine? The universe is working behind the scenes for you. To meet the universe halfway, show up authentically, maintain a daily self-care routine, and shine your light.Even during the most painful times, know that the universe is supporting you. These experiences might be lessons your soul chose or a way to guide others. Manage your expectations—things might not come through as you expect, but recognize divine timing by being present, seeing the magic in the moment, and celebrating all successes. To help you see things differently and show up as you're meant to, remember that you don't need to figure everything out on your own. Ask for help and be willing to do things differently.Maybe this episode is divinely timed to be your message to truly trust in whatever is coming next.

This is a series on faith, faithfulness, and trust. If we stop our journey at faith and never go into faithfulness we will be very limited in our relationship with the Lord. Faith without faithfulness can leave us with preconceived ideas about how God will come through but faithfulness will keep us steadfast until God does come through. The Israelites learned faithfulness in the wilderness that carried them into the Promise Land.

After almost 44 years of marriage, Greg and I have a few things to say about relationship love! Relationships are far from perfect and ours is definitely in that camp. However, we have learned and grown through the years and find ourselves appreciating each other more now than ever. These are five principles we apply regularly for our relationship that also apply to most every professional relationship: RESPECT We started noticing couples that seem happy treat each other well and ones that are struggling disrespected each other. The tone of voice used in private and public situations is a decision that each one of us makes. It's a It's a decision to not degrade or downgrade the other person's feelings or opinion. LISTENING One of the best phrases we have learned is “What I hear you say is…” This opens the door of communication that lets the other person know they are being listened to and heard. The temptation is to ‘hurl' comments back and forth that can be hurtful and cause your partner to shut down emotionally. We've all made that mistake! TRUST Trust is critical for deep conversations to happen. Without it, resentment, bitterness and loss of respect is the result. Trust is crucial in the area of finances and is usually one of the largest areas of conflict in a relationship. FORGIVENESS It's easy to hold a grudge for a long period of time if there is no forgiveness in a relationship. The ability to laugh at ourselves as well as with each other is healthy. The Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey has a good chapter on ‘Relationship Trust' that is worth reading. TIME (LOVE LANGUAGE) The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman is a classic book on communication and contains intrinsic truth and wisdom for communication styles. The five love languages are words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, time and physical touch. We have taken the time to discover what is of value for each of us and this has deepened our appreciation and love for each other through the years. Many people's definition of love hasn't grown since the teen years and we are here to say it's worth hanging on and growing together because when applying basic principles of respect, trust and forgiveness, it just gets better! Today on Guided Spirit Conversations I will talk about: Trust – Surrendering – Allowance. These three words carry immense power, encapsulating the essence of resilience, faith, and the art of letting go. In the journey of life, we often find ourselves clinging tightly to the illusion of control, fearing the unknown and the unpredictable. Yet, it is in embracing surrender, trust, and allowance that we find our true strength and freedom.  **Surrender:** Surrender is not a sign of weakness; rather, it signifies wisdom and courage. It is about acknowledging that there are forces at play in the universe far beyond our comprehension and that it's okay not to have all the answers. When we surrender, we release the burden of trying to control every aspect of our lives. Surrender teaches us acceptance, the ability to find peace amid chaos, and the beauty of living in the present moment. **Trust:** Trust is the cornerstone of any meaningful relationship, be it with ourselves, others, or the universe. Trust is the quiet confidence that things will unfold as they are meant to, even if we cannot see the bigger picture in the present moment. It's about having faith in the goodness of people and in the inherent wisdom of life's processes. Trusting ourselves and our abilities empowers us to take risks, learn from failures, and grow into the best version of ourselves. **Allowance:** Allowance is the gentle art of letting life flow. It means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, open to experiences, and receptive to change. When we allow life to unfold naturally, without imposing rigid expectations, we open ourselves to a world of possibilities. It's about recognizing that life is a river, and our attempts to control it only create unnecessary resistance. By allowing, we invite miracles to happen, we embrace serendipity, and we welcome the unexpected gifts that life has to offer. In embracing these principles of surrender, trust, and allowance, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. We learn to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience. We cultivate a deep sense of inner peace, knowing that we are an integral part of a grander design. Let us embrace the wisdom of surrender, trust, and allowance in our lives. Let us release our grip on the steering wheel of fate and allow the universe to guide us. Let us trust in the inherent goodness of life and surrender to the flow of existence. In doing so, we find not only freedom but also the limitless potential of our own being.   Don't forget to check out my website: https://www.marlagoldberrg.com/  Support the Podcast here: Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/marlaGoldberg Venmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/Marla-Goldberg-21

Trust in a relationship is built over time, but can be lost in a moment. When trust is broken, for example with infidelity/cheating, the feelings of betrayal can be intense and people often develop trust issues. But how do you re-learn how to trust yourself and your intuition? In this episode, you will learn how to start healing from the betrayal so that you can begin rebuilding trust in your relationship and with yourself. I also answer two questions, one from someone who keeps having their trust broken and feels like it is their fault, and another from a listener wondering if they can trust themselves to decide if they can trust someone who cheated on them. For episode show notes, please visit: https://www.newviewadvice.com/67Learn more about Amanda & New View Advice: https://www.newviewadvice.com/Want to have a question answered? Every reflection of this book ends with a prayer and each prayer ends with the prayer, “Jesus, I trust in You.” But do you? Trust is not only a one time act. It's not something we do or do not do. It's something we must do on a continually deepening level. There is no limit to the depths of the trust to which we are called. The deeper your trust, the more the Heart of our Divine Lord will be drawn to pour forth His Mercy. One essential aspect of growing in trust is seeing our misery and sin. When we see our sin without trust in God's Mercy, we are left in despair. But when we see the horror of our sin and trust in His Mercy to the same extent, He enters in and transforms our souls into His holy and pure dwelling place of love (See Diary #718).Do you trust in God and in His abundance of Mercy? If you do, you will also be aware of your sin to a great extent. Do you see your sin? Are you aware of your miserable condition? If so, do not despair; rather, see it as a graced opportunity to trust all the more in God and in His perfect love for you.Lord, I do trust in You but I do not trust You enough. Help me, first, to be aware of my wretchedness and sin. But in seeing this miserable condition, help me to turn to You rather than to despair. May my trust never end and may it grow continually deeper so that Your Heart may be opened and so that You will pour down Your grace upon me. Jesus, I trust in You. Jesus, I trust in You. The Language of Influence Part 1 Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. Just a little over a one minute investment every day for a lifetime of results. Three languages that we are going to talk about today. First language is the language of influence, right? And what I wanna do is I wanna talk about how we generally influence the other person. The first thing we have to work on within that is our body language, right? So, we gave high fives before, the energy level went up, where are we at? 3-9-4,okay, we'll get up there. Now in order to have influence of any type, we have to build an environment of rapport. Okay? Now we're gonna go through 9 types of influence in a moment, we need them to trust us that's the goal we need to get to. But first thing we need to do is, we need to build rapport. Now, if I were to ask you what is–how would you define ‘rapport'? What was your working definition of that be?  Just shout it out? What do you think rapport is all about?  (Relationship)  Relationship? Great. Relationship of what?  (Trust) Trust, nice try. You're right ahead. Go ahead. Confidence? Rapport is the relationship of saying this like this commonality. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould and this has been your #70secondCEO.

The Business of Meetings – Episode 151 – Every Seat Matters with Cleo Battle Today, Eric is joined by Cleo Battle, the President, and CEO of Louisville Tourism and the new Chair of the international board of MPI!  Cleo Battle Biography:  Cleo Battle, a hospitality industry veteran of nearly 35 years, currently serves as President & CEO of Louisville Tourism. Before coming to Louisville, he spent 12 years as Vice President of Sales & Services of the Richmond Convention & Visitors Bureau in Richmond, VA. He held the positions of Director of Sales and Sales Manager at the Richmond CVB.  Battle began his hospitality career in the hotel industry by working for Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn, and Sheraton Hotels. Battle is a native of Denver and a graduate of Metropolitan State University in Denver with a bachelor's degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management. He earned his Master's of Business Administration in 1997 from Averett University in Virginia. He is both a Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) and Certified Association Sales Executive (CASE).  Battle's most recent industry recognition includes Events Industry Council 2020 Social Impact award winner, Business First Louisville's inaugural Power 50 as well as The Courier-Journal's 12 People to Watch in 2021.  Battle currently serves on the Meeting Planners International Board of Directors, Kentucky Derby Museum Board of Directors, Louisville Sports Commission Executive Board, LRAA Board, Kentucky State Fair Board, Louisville Zoo Foundation Board, Funds for the Arts Board, and Board Member for Northeast YMCA of Louisville. He is the Past Chair of Destination & Travel Foundation, Destination International Sales & Services Committee, and the Virginia State University Hospitality Department Advisory Board. Cleo's journey Cleo was a college track and field athlete. In his third year, he tore a leg muscle and since he was still undecided about what he would major in, he spoke to a school counselor who suggested going into the field of hotel restaurant management. He began taking classes and also worked as an intern in a hotel. Eventually, he was hired into the management training program for Promise Hotels. That's when his career took off! How athletics set Cleo up for success Learning how to run hurdles gave Cleo adaptability and flexibility and many other skill sets he needed to grow and become successful in his career. Cleo truly understands the importance of having a strong team and learned that you cannot do everything by yourself in business and that you are only as good as the people around you. His old boss from Richmond, Virginia, taught him the key to any successful endeavor lies in hiring well. He used to tell Cleo to hire well, provide good resources, and then get the hell out of the way!  Trust Trust is an essential ingredient for teamwork. People do much better when they work in a professional space where constructive criticism is valued, they can be honest about their thoughts, and where they know their opinions will be respected, regardless of what the leaders ultimately decide to do. Every seat matters At staff meetings, Cleo always tells the members of his organization that every seat matters. He wants them to understand that regardless of whether they are the director of sales, a marketing manager, or an administrative assistant, their seat in the organization matters! Enabling people Whenever there is a new subject matter, Cleo enables his team by inviting them to share ideas, thoughts and opinions on it. Cleo's current position Even though his current position as President and CEO of Louisville Tourism involves a lot of legislative work and more talk about politics than customers, Cleo maintains the belief it's vital to stay true to the core mission of Louisville Tourism and bring visitors to the community. MPI Since the beginning of January, Cleo became the Chair of MPI and serves on its International Board of Directors. He insists on his team having a growth mindset rather than one of recovery.  The cost of doing business has changed Since the pandemic, the cost of doing business has changed. So a lot of work has to be done on the industry brand to help those outside it see its value, what is being done, why it is important, and how the industry impacts people's lives. Getting more people to join the industry Cleo points out that personnel of hotels, convention centers, museums and attractions, restaurants, and airports cannot work from home. So the industry will need to figure out the right balance between automated and personal services going forward. He believes that the industry must invest in its brand to let more people know why it is such an exciting industry to join. Appreciation and acknowledgment Cleo feels that openly acknowledging his staff members and appreciating what they do are the best ways to encourage them to offer customers the best possible service!
