POPULARITY
This week: welcome to the age of the strongman ‘The world's most exclusive club… is growing,' writes Paul Wood in this week's Spectator. Membership is restricted to a very select few: presidents-for-life. Putin of Russia, Xi of China, Kim of North Korea and MBS of Saudi Arabia are being joined by Erdogan of Turkey – who is currently arresting his leading domestic political opponent – and Donald Trump, who ‘openly admires such autocrats and clearly wants to be one himself'. ‘This is the age of the strongman,' Wood declares, ‘and the world is far more dangerous because of it.' Despite their bombast, these ‘are often troubled characters', products of difficult childhoods. But ‘the real danger' lies in their ‘grandiose plans' and ‘wish to secure their place in history by redrawing the map' whether over Ukraine, Taiwan or even Greenland. What drives them, and how worried should we be? Paul joined the podcast alongside the Financial Times journalist, and author of The Age of the Strongman, Gideon Rachman. (1:01) Next: Tesla owners, beware! Jonathan Miller writes in the magazine this week about the phenomenon of Tesla cars being defaced, damaged, and even set fire to. The brand's association with its owner Elon Musk has made it an ‘accessible but indefensible' target for activists. And, despite Musk's role in the Trump administration, this issue isn't confined to the US. Jonathan joined the podcast from his hamlet in the south of France to talk about how local Tesla-owners are preparing to fight back. A representative from the activist group Tesla Takedown did initially accept an invitation to join the podcast… (15:50) And finally: are theatre matinees experiencing a revival? Playwright Jonathan Maitland highlights the resurgent popularity of theatre matinees in the arts lead of the magazine. Matinees have a long history within theatre and now offer a greater convenience for diverse audiences in a post-pandemic age. Jonathan's new play, Wilko: Love and Death and Rock n Roll, is a good example of this. At London's Southwark Playhouse until the 19th April, they've put on extra matinee performances to cope with demand (a small number of tickets are still available). Jonathan joined the podcast alongside Nica Burns, the theatre producer and co-owner of the Nimax Theatres group which runs six West End theatres including the Palace, the Apollo and the Garrick. (22:25) Presented by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Theresa Chaze began her career in the mid-1980s at a small independent TV station in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Moving to Traverse City, she worked at the local ABC affiliate as a producer, writer, editor, and director. In the mid-1990s, she ghostwrote two features and two shorts. However, after working as a producer on two independent films, she walked away from the industry. Her time away from film and television gave her the strength and courage to turn impossible into I'm possible. Her company, Kaleidoscope Film and Television, combines the best of old-school storytelling with modern technologies. Producing projects based on age, gender, and ethnic diversity it will be breaking stereotypes in front of and behind the cameras, especially for women, Native Americans, and veterans.

Now we return to our regularly scheduled programming. This week's guest brings with him a bumper crop of excellent film selections which led to a supersized episode running time. But I'd like to think that some patience will be rewarding. Thanks for listening.

For arguably the spookiest month of the year, the manatees watched the really-more-action-fantasy-than-horror movie Hellboy, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and Doug Jones. And, spoiler, they really liked it. Also in this episode: the manatees discuss casting picks for the Hellboy reboot (Aubrey Plaza for Liz!), Ben attempts to bully Sam for being a slightly different kind of nerd than he is about Star Wars, and even more fawning appreciation for practical effects.
1993's Super Mario Bros. is widely regarded as one of the worst video game adaptations ever put to film. Is that true, or is it one of the THE BEST MOVIES EVER?
Hey everyone! We are so glad to be back bringing episodes to you every week! Theo and I have been very busy with our current show together, Anything Goes with RCMT and we wanted to show what getting ready for the show would be like for the people at home, so before one of your shows I went around asking silly questions to the cast and crew. Now I must preface that this is no means a serious episode, for this particular cast is very silly, and it was fun just to ask crazy and silly questions to my lovely cast and crew of this amazing show. Come see us in our finaly 5 shows, evening shows at 7:30pm and Matinees at 2pm this Saturday and Sunday. We close on the 23rd!

The Baby Boomer Radio, TV, Movies, Magazines, Music, Comics, Fads, Toys, Fun, and More Show!
A handful of candy, fake a sneeze, and spray the front row of the local theatre with red hots...this the typical scene during the Saturday matinees that Mike recalls, along with those cliff-hanging serials such as Zorro and Flash Gordon, repurposed as fillers in 1950s-1960s U.S. cinemas. Smitty offers insight on transcription disks, those pre-vinyl recording media that were the grandparents of today's CDs, DVDs, and memory card archive systems. Ian Rose remembers Sea Hunt, and Lloyd Bridges as deep water TV private eye Mike Nelson. Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site is the nostalgia show produced in San Diego by three "older" baby-boomers who work in the local radio and TV industry. In these approximately one-half hour shows, The Galaxy Guys chat it up about the music, movies, TV shows, technology and personalities of the 1940s through early 1980s. We invite nostalgia buffs in every baby-boomer interest or genre to join us by e-mailing photos, ideas, and memories of bygone times, when a 50 cent lawn mowing allowance would get you in to the movies on a Saturday afternoon, with money left over for a tube of Flicks, a pack of Charms, and maybe even a small cup of Mr. Pibb.
