7am hour of Piece-A-Thon! Featuring Jason Mengel of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and Bryan Broaddus
Today we're talking with Maria Mengel about her 2 birth stories. Maria's first daughter was born at a birthing center with a midwife, and her second was an unassisted home birth (also known as "freebirth"). In this episode Maria gets honest about her two birth experiences and shares some of the things she learned during the process. Maria reached out to us after listening to the show and felt inspired to share her experience of home birth. We love stories like these - full of candor, vulnerability and humor. Maria has the experience and perspective of giving birth in a birthing center as well as at home, so we were really excited to sit down and pick her brain about it all. We learn about the birthing center experience and why Maria was certain on the drive home with her new daughter that she'd never do it like that again. We also hear about the process of home birth, and what can happen when your waters break and you don't go into labor that day...or even the next day! Birth was such a transformational experience for Maria that it ignited a passion that would shift her career. She became a doula and now owns a business dedicated to birth work which includes placenta encapsulation and childbirth education.
Wir wundern uns dann, warum New Work nicht funktioniert.

Every day Juanita Mengel, a 67-year-old woman from the state of Ohio, wakes up and puts on her manufactured leg. The device is called a prosthetic. Then, Mengel does the same for Lola-Pearl, her colorful five-year-old cat. Lola-Pearl is missing her back left leg. Mengel has many cats. Most of them have disabilities. But Lola-Pearl is special. She is a therapy cat. And, she and Mengel are partners of a kind. They are among 200 therapy cat teams registered in the United States by the nonprofit group, Pet Partners. The group helps humans and pets alike by setting them up into teams to provide animal-assisted intervention. The teams visit hospitals, nursing homes and schools and assist those in need. Taylor Chastain Griffin is national director of animal-assisted interventions at Pet Partners. She said, “A therapy animal is an animal who's been assessed based on their ability to meet new people and not just tolerate the interaction, but actively enjoy it.” Chastain Griffin is a researcher who studies the effects of therapy cats. She said there needs to be more research done in cat therapy. She said that there is a lot of research on other therapy animals like dogs, and many people are surprised to learn that cats can be therapy animals too. "They go into a setting and people are like, 'Whoa, there's a cat on a leash. What's happening? It kind of inspires people to connect in a way we haven't traditionally heard talked about in other therapy animal interventions,” Chastain Griffin said. “他们进入一个环境,人们会说,‘哇,有一只猫被皮带拴着。发生了什么事?这激发了人们以一种我们在其他动物干预治疗中从未听说过的方式进行联系,”查斯坦 格里芬说道。 Besides dogs and cats, Pet Partners registers seven other species as therapy animals, including horses, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, birds, mini pigs, and llamas and alpacas. 除了狗和猫之外,Pet Partners 还注册了其他七种动物作为治疗动物,包括马、兔子、老鼠、豚鼠、鸟类、迷你猪、美洲驼和羊驼。Mengel said Lola-Pearl showed signs that she would make a good therapy cat soon after the animal joined her family. Mengel took her new cat to a meeting for amputees. 门格尔说,洛拉·珀尔在加入她的家庭后不久就表现出迹象,表明她将成为一只优秀的治疗猫。 门格尔带着她的新猫去参加截肢者会议。 "She was so good with people I just knew she would be a good therapy cat. People really were attracted to her, too,” Mengel said. “她与人相处得很好,我知道她会成为一只很好的治疗猫。人们也真的被她吸引了,”门格尔说。 Recently people who attended a support group for amputees were able to meet Lola-Pearl. They petted her as she woke up from a rest. On the side of the cat carrier she rode in was a sign: “Therapy Cat” it read. Mengel was a traveling nurse when she was in a car accident that almost killed her. One of her legs could not be saved. Later, she connected with a friend in the state of Missouri who had a severely injured kitten. Her legs were twisted together. An animal medical specialist worked to repair the damage but, in the end, they had to remove one of the baby cat's legs. That kitten was Lola-Pearl. Mengel took Lola-Pearl as her cat after talking with her friend. Despite the difficulties Mengel has faced, she is thankful for Lola-Pearl and their work together. It's a really rewarding experience," she said, "I get just as much out of it as the people that I visit." “这是一次非常有意义的经历,”她说,“我和我拜访的人一样从中受益匪浅。”

Many creators get into the business knowing how to create incredible content and cultivate a community, but the whole running a business thing is foreign.. Contracts being something that I see the most creators having issues with. Today, we're here with Trevor Mengel, Co-founder & CEO of Cloutdesk, a company building the operating system for creator-brand partnerships. He started Cloudesk to help independent creators like his spouse, professional creator Samantha Cutler, more efficiently manage and monetize brand collaborations. Cloutdesk makes it ridiculously easy for creators to do things like negotiate for better compensation and automate 80% of the "administrative" work required for brand collabs — including contracts.. ----more---- Become a BRAND BFF Episode 86 Show Notes can be found here. Last week, a House Judiciary Committee held a hearing called “Free Speech: The Biden Administration's Chilling of Parents' Fundamental Rights,” with conservative speakers from Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education. But where were the moms who support diversity? And what about the students themselves? Where were their voices? With yet another tragic school shooting this week, we have to ask ourselves… when will we listen to kids and value their lives more than we value guns? This week, we hear from Claire Mengel, a young activist from Cincinnati who organized against the cancellation of Diversity Day in their high school. Claire shares why their school board canceled the event in the first place and why they felt it was so important to stand up for diversity. And even more importantly, Claire shares why it's so crucial to listen to students about their own lived experiences and what adults can do to help. Then Rachel sits down with Porsche Joseph, an activist, educator, and co-author of the book Better Than We Found It: Conversations To Help Save the World. The book is aimed at young adults, but anyone can get so much out of its explorations of topics like gun violence, immigration, and health care. Rachel and Porsche chat about supporting young people, what it was like to write a book with her husband, and what Elizabeth Warren is like in real life! Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to birthdays and passing bills in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”The Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 4th could decide the future of abortion rights in Wisconsin, as well as redistricting and voting rights, which could have a huge impact on the 2024 election. Have you ever had an idea that you just couldn't get out of your head? A dream that, no matter how hard you tried to ignore it, just kept popping up. If so, honor that inclination. As today's guest says, if you can't stop thinking about it, you should probably go for it. In this episode, I'm chatting with Jack Mengel about his leap from project management to data science. In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Noah Scovronick, an assistant professor at Emory University who coauthored a recent journal article that estimates the effects of climate change on heat-related human mortality over the past three decades. The research covers dozens of countries and assesses how increased moderate and extreme heat has affected human health on every populated continent. Scovronick and Raimi discuss the ways people can adapt to these risks and how the potential health benefits of fewer cold days compare to increased risks from more hot days. I feel like every week this year has felt like a month…how is it only the end of January? Sorry there was no episode last week—my computer broke and I had no way of recording. So suffice to say that last week was a whirlwind and I cannot even begin to imagine what this week will bring. Oh, that's right, a whirlwind! Because on today's episode we're covering the legend of Louisville's Witch Tree and the storm that sprouted it: the Storm Demon. But we'll talk more about that name and poor reporting later. This is a case where the truth is stranger than fiction…or at least more disturbing. The articles I've read about the legend of the witch tree made it seem like the Storm Demon was this little itty bitty tornado that swept through Louisville destroying one neighborhood and all was well…but all of the articles about the Witch Tree left out that this tornado was part of a mass casualty event with hundreds dead. So, without further ado let's hear the legend as it's typically told and then learn the horrifying truths of what really transpired. On the corner of Sixth and Park, in Louisville, Kentucky, stood a large, tall maple; straight as a pole. It had been there for centuries and provided shade to the citizens of Louisville by day…but by night, below its leafy crown that stretched upwards towards the stars, witches would gather to cast their spells and worship their old gods. Or, as some may mistakenly believe: the devil. However, in 1889 a chain of events would be set into motion that would topple not only this sacred maple, but half the city of Louisvile. Mr. Mengel, of the famous Mengel Lumber Company, was head of the city's planning committee and was scouting for trees to be used for Louisville's May Day celebration when he laid his eyes upon the majestic maple. He knew that he had to have that tree, it was so tall and so straight, it was born to be a May pole. The news quickly reached the ears of the witches, perhaps even before the thoughts formed in Mr. Mengel's mind. One night, under the cover of darkness and a velvet hood, the priestess of the coven knocked on Mr. Mengel's door. He answered, displeased, and she implored him not to cut down their beloved maple. “I will do no such thing!” he bellowed. “Please sir, I beg you to consider your actions very carefully. I will ask once more for you to please not fell our sacred tree.” “And I will tell you once more that I will be chopping down that tree” “Very well,” the priestess said calmly, looking up from beneath her hood, “I asked you nicely and you refused, now you shall face the consequences.” Before Mr. Mengel could even ask what she meant dozens of cloaked figures emerged from all directions: from behind the trees, around the street corners, and some even seeming to appear out of thin air. They slowly began to gather together, holding hands as they chanted: This tree shall stand and not be cut, We've fed her with our laughter. Our leafy haven you'll not gut. Or pay forever after. But if you, Wooden King, prevail, And Mother Maple dies, The force of Fate shall strike this town And right between the eyes. If our tree falls, yes, Fate will call To teach you, heartless Dunce, That all man's work can disappear. BEWARE ELEVENTH MONTH! And just as quickly as they appeared, they were gone. Leaving only the head witch on Mr. Mengel's doorstep. “Don't say I didn't warn you Wooden King. Remember, wood burns.” She smiled a wry smile, swept her cloak, turned on her heel, and disappeared into the night. Mr. Mengel paid no mind to the witches' warning, and he proceeded with his plans. The tree was chopped down, and as its heavy trunk smashed to the ground horrid shrieks could be heard echoing through the city. However, the May Day celebration went off without a hitch. The trunk of the maple was adorned with ribbons and decorations of all kinds as men, women, and children danced about it. Afterward, it's carcass was tossed into the Whitsuntide bonfire where to was turned to ash. Everyone had forgotten about the witches' warning, but 11 months later, to the very day, the curse would take effect. On March 28, 1890, the witches whipped up a hell of storm to terrorize the city of Louisville. They first sent it down Maple Street, proving it was their craftwork, and into downtown. Here, the storm flattened buildings, killing and injuring many – and among them were the members of the May Day committee and two members of the Mengel family. And then, according to eyewitnesses, the twister made a bizarre right-hand turn down sixth street. As it barreled down Sixth Street toward Park, the storm hurled a lightning bolt straight into the stump where the sacred maple had once stood. From this charred base grew what is now known as the witches' tree: a gnarled wretched thing with great burls and thin branches like the bones of a witches' hand. Since the day of the storm it is said that coven has returned to cast their spells beneath the twisted branches of the witches' tree. Visitors to Louisville place flowers at the base of the tree and hang beads and charms from its branches as gifts to the city's witches, in hopes that they may cast a spell in their favor. Meanwhile, the citizens of Louisville have never dishonored the wishes of a witch since in fear that their city may once again fall to ruins. What a cute little story, right? Wrong. The articles about the witches' tree make it sounds like there was this little twister that rolled through Louisville but no…on March 27, 1890 there was a tornado outbreak and it was the most deadly tornado event in United States history. I didn't know that a tornado outbreak was a thing? But now that I know it is, I am absolutely horrified. You may have caught that I said March 27th and not March 28th. This is another case of modern journalism recounting the date that an event was reported, not the date that it occurred. Much like the Carnegie medal situation in episode one. So, on March 27th 1890 there was a massive outbreak of tornados, dubbed the Storm Demon by some papers, though it appears tornados may have just been called this as I saw newspapers for years after and prior calling them storm demons. Which may be more errors in modern journalism, but I digress. This outbreak created a number of storms ranging in intensity from F2 to F4 on the Fujita scale (which goes to 5 by the way). The tornado that hit Louisville was an F4 storm with winds ranging from 207-260 miles per hour and it destroyed 766 buildings totaling 2.5 million dollars (the modern equivalent of $71 million dollars) in damage. The storm killed an estimated 74-120 people though initial estimates were around 800, with most of the victims being those within the Falls City Hall building. The newspapers at the time had a slew of eyewitness accounts. Now, I will be forthright to say the sources I acquire historic newspapers from did not have the newspapers from Louisville for this time range. But, fortunately, many newspapers back in the day would run columns verbatim from other areas if it was major news and I was able to acquire them this way. Now, one of the newspapers I read listed off all of the confirmed dead at the time, and I was not able to find the name “Mengel” anywhere within them. Two of Mr. Mengel's relatives were said to have died. This at the moment is unconfirmed. Also, before we get into the real horror, because I want to read eyewitness accounts, I wanted to talk about the witches' warning. It has been told many ways – the way I told it was much more dramatic. The chant I said was said to have been left on a note nailed to the tree, but other sources, or should I say the same exact source said that the warning had been uttered as a simple warning of “Beware 11th month” to Mr. Mengel. This same source I am talking about is the author and historian David Domine who gives haunted tours. It is hard to take his word for it when he has been quoted with two distinct stories, and I don't know what his book on Louisville says occurred…I didn't want to buy a physical copy and I can't get the e-book version from the library. He's a professor, so I'm sure things may be cited in his book but I have to stay the story is a bit crumbly. Like Falls City Hall. An excerpt from the Greenville Journal from Thursday, April 3 that describes what happened at the city hall: “The great center of death is the Falls City Hall where more than two hundred men, woman, and children are entombed. It is situated on Market street, near Twelfth. The structure was three stories in height and when struck by the tornado, several meetings were being held within it. The loss of life at this place far exceeds that at any other one locality and of the great numbers known to be under the debris it is certain that none will be recovered alive. The ruins are now scarcely one story high so thorough was the work of the wind.” It goes on to detail some of what was going on in the building at the time: “On the second floor of this building Miss App was teaching a dance class of young children, and there were present the mothers, fathers, and other attendants of the gay juveniles. In one of the rooms on this floor the executive body of the Roman Knights was in session. Of the seven members present all escaped but one. On the third floor Jewell Lodge No. 2, Knights and Ladies of Honor was holding a meeting. This was one of the largest lodges of the order, and there were 150 members present when the building fell. A mere handful of these escaped.” It describes more in attendance and recounts the tale of A.J. Reed the Past Grand Master LOOF of the State (I don't know what that is) said: “I was entering the hallway when the tornado struck the building at the southeast corner. There were several crashes and the structure began to rock, whereupon the men and women from the Knights of Honor meeting began pouring out of their lodge room adjoining shrieking in terror. It was only for a moment though for the building collapsed and I found myself on top of the great pile. I was stunned and blinded by the dust, but recovered myself and crawled out. The agonizing shrieks of others were terrible. I was finally taken away by a rescuing party.” So I know that was a lot of reading, but this is the main building where the most life was lost. I'm unsure if the children in the dance class were okay. There are some pretty terrible accounts from the Sacramento Daily Record from Saturday the 29th. Lewis Simms Jr.'s wife and four kids were in the dance class and he paced outside city hall for hours while workers searched the ruins. Eventually the dance room was reached and his wife was found fatally wounded. Three of the four Simms children were recovered unconscious and not expected to live. To make matters worse, before his fourth child could be found, a fire erupted in the wreckage and no more bodies were able to be recovered. Poor Miss App, the schoolteacher, was one of the bodies recovered before the blaze broke out. I'm going to read a few more stories, I hope you don't mind. I know this episode is really depressing and heartbreaking. But I feel like this particular legend is another example of a city attempting to cope with a horrible tragedy.

In this episode of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, John interviews Professor Richard Mulvaney from the University of Illinois. Dr. Mulvaney is a prolific soil fertility scientist and researcher with many published papers relating to nitrogen and potassium uptake in crops. His work with Dr. Saeed Khan led to the development of the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test (ISNT). John and Dr. Mulvaney discuss nitrogen uptake in crops, how soil should provide most of the needed nitrogen, and the fallacy that applying nitrogen builds soil organic matter. He also describes the “potassium paradox”, how significant amounts of potassium are available from the soil, and the damaging cycle that is created when applying potash. Nitrogen Fertilization (00:00:53)Dr. Mulvaney began working in soil fertility in the 1980s with a focus on minimizing nitrogen fertilizer loss to increase crop uptake, specifically in regard to the isotope N-15. In collaboration with Dr. Saeed Khan in the 1990s, he found evidence that in some cases, fertilizer nitrogen on corn has no statistically significant response. At the time, most soil scientists were operating with the assumption that the optimal amount of fertilizer nitrogen is found by multiplying 1.2 times an expected yield goal, then deducting nitrogen credits such as a previous legume. In a project in Illinois studying on-farm plots, around 33 of 75 studied sites showed no significant response to fertilizer nitrogen, a finding inconsistent with the 1.2 method. The unfertilized yields, or check yields, were very high and not significantly increased with an application of nitrogen. Thus, Dr. Mulvaney hypothesized that the 1.2 calculation might not be as reliable as previously thought. Dr. Khan and Dr. Mulvaney conducted research to determine the difference between plots used in that study that were responsive and those that were unresponsive to fertilizer nitrogen applications. His wife noted that while soil scientists understand how carbon in plants is heterogeneous and decomposes at different rates, they assume that nitrogen is all the same. Examining the differences within nitrogen forms made clear that the plants at the non-responsive sites had sufficient levels of nitrogen available from the soil and so did not need nitrogen fertilizer applications. Using diffusion on the soil samples from the same study, they found that non-responsive soils were consistently testing higher in amino sugar nitrogen. The prevailing thought at the time was that fertilizer is the primary source of nitrogen for crop uptake, especially for corn. However, Mulvaney’s and Khan’s data shows that at least two thirds of the nitrogen in the crop at harvest is supplied from the soils, rather than from applied fertilizer nitrogen. In soils with higher amounts of amino sugar nitrogen, applications of fertilizer nitrogen are a waste of money because most or all of the nitrogen is supplied by the soil. It follows that measured soil nitrogen is only correlated with crop response to applied nitrogen when soil tests measure amino sugar nitrogen. The 1.2 method was developed from research trials on static plots. These corn plots received the same fertilizer treatments each year. On the unfertilized plots, corn used the nutrients from the soil with no nitrogen fertilizer added. Microbes will also use nitrogen from the soil to break down crop residues, depleting the following crop of nitrogen and depressing yields. The depletion of nitrogen resulting in depressed yields on the unfertilized plots makes the fertilizer effect appear more dramatic in comparison. Because the 1.2 method is based on static plots, it and its related assumptions are invalid when applied to farmer fields. Similarly, the assumption that one-third of the nitrogen will come from the soil is incorrect. In reality, two-thirds of the nitrogen is supplied from soils and only one third or less comes from fertilizer. These misconceptions have misled growers on the importance of nitrogen applications. Because soil is the primary source of nitrogen for crop uptake, soils should be tested to determine how much nitrogen fertilizer should be applied. Dr. Mulvaney and Dr. Khan developed the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test (ISNT) to estimate the amino sugar fraction for variable-rate nitrogen application recommendations. A former student of Dr. Mulvaney runs the lab at Cropsmith, where the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test is available. Expansion on Amino Sugar Nitrogen (00:24:15)Amino sugars are an organic form of nitrogen produced by microbial activity. They occur in microbial cell walls, spores, and in chitin. The bacterial cell walls are more decomposable. Nitrogen shows up in asparagine and glutamine, essential amino acids, which contain one nitrogen atom each in the amino group and the amide group, which is prone to break down. It is estimated that 5-10% of soil organic nitrogen is in the form of amino sugars, but Dr. Mulvaney believes it is likely higher. Amino sugar nitrogen, more specifically referred to as alkali hydrolyzable nitrogen, will also increase with more soil biological activity. Manured soils have higher levels of it, and thus have a diminished need for synthetic fertilizer nitrogen. Although his lab has not studied cover crops directly, he believes having active plants in the soil will increase microbial activity and thus the amino sugar nitrogen. The Morrow Plots, located at the University of Illinois and established in 1876, are the oldest continuous research plots in North America. They are static plots with three rotations, continuous corn, corn-soybean, and corn-oats-hay. In his research, Dr. Khan noticed that the continuous corn plots were not as healthy and had lower yields than the corn-oats-hay plots, even though the continuous corn plots received significantly more nitrogen fertilizer. The results of the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test were lower on the continuous corn plots, which shows that synthetic nitrogen fertilizer is not necessarily building soil organic matter. Research comparing samples from 1955, 1967, and 2005 showed decreases in organic matter on the fertilized subplots. Dr. Mulvaney explains that the fertilizer actually “burned” organic matter. Carbon metabolism requires nitrogen, in a ratio of about 7 carbon to 1 nitrogen, so microbes can only access carbon from crop residue with nitrogen availability. When the microbes have too much nitrogen, they burn off the excess carbon as carbon dioxide rather than building soil organic matter. Additionally, conventional fertilizers have an oxidizing effect on soil microbial communities and stimulate respiration, which releases carbon from the soil as carbon dioxide. Dr. Mulvaney notes that William Albrecht published a paper in 1938 in a handbook from the USDA where he stated that adequate nitrogen is needed to build organic matter. Later that year, Albrecht published an article in the Soil Science Society of America Proceedings based on results which showed that unfertilized plots had gained organic matter while fertilized plots had lost it. Albrecht never again said adequate nitrogen is needed. Potassium Paradox (0:43:40)Dr. Mulvaney worked with Dr. Khan, an expert on potassium, to write papers on the potassium paradox. He was doing soil testing for potassium on the South Farm at Illinois, testing from the surface plow layer to about seven inches into the soil. The unfertilized plots increased in their average potassium levels, leading to the realization that the soil was releasing potassium. There are about 40,000 pounds of potassium per acre in just the top six inches of many Midwestern soils. A review of numerous potassium studies showed that there is no significant yield increase from potash fertilization. Clay layers, mostly found in the subsoil rather than the plow layer, hold significant quantities of potassium. When the plant roots reach those lower levels, they find large quantities of potassium that they extract with the biological functions of the root system. Because potassium is a major plant cation, there are high levels of soluble potassium carbonate in crop residue. Salts are leached from crop residue during rainfall, resulting in most of the potassium in a corn crop returning to the soil and making potassium fertilization unnecessary. Potassium is also fixed in the clay due to its size, leading to high potassium retention in clay layers with sufficient moisture. These factors lead to sufficient potassium levels in the soil. A German researcher, Mengel, performed a greenhouse study where he removed the clay fraction from soil, and potassium uptake was still high. This led to the idea that potassium in the clay layers is unavailable to plants, but Dr. Mulvaney disagrees. He finds that the plants are able to make the potassium available by producing acids. Soil testers measure the exchangeable potassium in soils, and do not measure the non-exchangeable and mineral potassium. This means that they will underestimate the available potassium and will recommend potassium fertilization, though it may not be necessary. As further evidence that potassium fertilization is typically unnecessary, Dr. Mulvaney refers to Cyril Hopkins, a 20th-century soil scientist, who claimed that potassium is not a necessary input because the soil already contains enough. The potassium paradox is based on the fact that applying potash to soil makes potassium less available by collapsing the clay layers. To demonstrate, Dr. Mulvaney tells a story about a fertilizer dealer who applied potassium to soils that had tested low for potassium. When they re-tested the field, the potassium levels were even lower. They assumed they had the wrong field, re-applied potassium on the same field, and again found lower potassium levels afterward. Thus, applying potassium can worsen potassium deficiency. Dr. Mulvaney advises growers to use the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test or another similar test. It doesn’t test for nitrate, which is dynamic, but tests a more stable nitrogen, specifically amino sugar nitrogen. This allows many growers to save money on purchased inputs such as nitrogen fertilizer if they do not need it. Rather than soil testing for potassium, he recommends strip trials comparing strips with no potassium fertilizer and strips with a small amount, as large amounts are never necessary. He also recommends using sulfate for potassium fertilizer, rather than Muriate of Potash, because the chloride content in Muriate of Potash diminishes nitrate uptake. In The Music Real Episode 20, The Pushworth Group team catch up with Australian Music Lawyers, John Kenny and Lindsay Mengel of Entrelaw. During this time in lockdown, we figured it was a good idea for Live Music Artists to listen to some information about Trademarking their Music Brands. Especially when looking forward into the brave new post COVID music business world. John and Lindsay give us a lot to think about. Lockdown affords us a great opportunity to dig a little deeper into our Music Business Plans and assess how much our investment is worth and how easy it is for someone to leverage that value by using our brand if we DO NOT register a Trademark for our Music Brands. Great food for thought. https://themusicreal.com.au/2020/06/03/why-trademark-a-chat-with-music-lawyer-john-kenny/

But sometimes their objective is more than just to kill, they also aim to terrify. The people on this list took “terrifying” to new heights all because they enjoyed it. These are 5 Real Life Masked Killers. 5. Fabian Kramer At 19 years old, Fabian Kramer from Bielefeld, Germany, became fascinated with the movie “Saw” in March of 2012. The film first came out in 2004 and featured a crazed murderer who kidnapped two men and chained them up in an underground bathroom. In order to get out, they had to saw their way to freedom. In what seemed to be a stroke of inspiration, Kramer puts on a mask, the same one used in the film, went to his landlady’s apartment, 82-year old, Hanna Litz, and stabbed her more then 50 times. 4. Alex Mengel It began on February 24, 1985 when Alex Mengel’s vehicle was pulled over for a traffic violation in Westchester, New York, by Officer Gary Stymiloski. Inside the car was Mengel and three of his friends. After the officer found shotguns in the trunk, he asked for a license but Mengel didn’t have one. He called dispatch to run a license and registration check, but Mengel had other plans. He pulled an unregistered handgun out from under the vehicle’s front seat, approached the officer and shot him point blank. He then told his friends to take his car and go home. Mengel then took the patrol car, drove it for about a mile before abandoning it. 3. Danny Rolling To shock, titillate and terrify - Danny Rolling’s employed all three when he murdered five Gainesville, Florida students between November and August of 1990. Rolling’s disturbed behavior formed during his early years. A product of an abusive household, he grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana with a sadistic police officer father. His mother allowed the abuse and never protected her sons. In his teens, he dropped out of school and started a series of robberies in Georgia and When he became an adult, it wasn’t any better. 2. Hadden Clark Hadden Clark hailed from Troy, New York, and was born and raised in an affluent family. But despite the abundance, abuse played prominently within the household. Both parents were alcoholics and when they drank, the four children took the brunt of it. Hadden, however, had it worse then the others. During his childhood, his father called him a “retard” while his mother dressed him in girl’s clothes and called him “Kristen.” It didn’t help that at school, Clark was also heavily bullied. He retaliated by torturing animals, decapitating them and leaving their heads at the front doors of the kids who bullied him. 1. Edward Paisnel Known as the “Beast of Jersey,” Edward Paisnel inspired terror on Channel Island, Jersey, off the English Channel. Between 1960 and 1971, he victimized unsuspecting children and women before he was finally captured. On the outside and to the children, he was known as “Uncle Ted.” A kind, genial man who dressed up as Santa Claus for Christmas, gave them gifts and laughed. Paisnel’s mother-in-law ran a children’s home called La Preference which Edward frequented. He also hung out at another children’s home called Haut de La Garenne. Meanwhile, he and his wife hosted orphans in their home. All this gave him very easy access to his victims.
