Pain and curiosity are two of the greatest forces for growth. Dr. Anna Yusim, a psychiatrist and spiritual teacher, shares how entrepreneurs can use both to tap into intuition, break free from limiting patterns, and build a more fulfilling path. Her journey from Stanford and Yale-trained psychiatry to a deeper exploration of spirituality and Kabbalah wasn't planned. It started through unexplainable moments with patients and a dream that shifted everything. In this episode, she challenges the idea that success is purely external, showing how personal growth and self-awareness shape the way entrepreneurs lead, create, and navigate uncertainty. Are you growing because of past pain, or are you choosing growth before hardship forces your hand? Dr. Yusim breaks down the difference and offers insights on intuition, purpose, and the inner roadblocks that often hold entrepreneurs back. She also explores the importance of community in a world where loneliness is at an all-time high and explains how spirituality—and for some, even psychedelics—can be powerful tools for transformation. Alex Raymond and Dr. Yusim's discussion is a reminder that business isn't just strategy and execution. The inner work matters just as much. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Julie Yusim discuss:Adding a little positive self-talk to your routine. Getting value for your networking time. Going deep and playing the networking long game. Evaluating your wide network to see where you should go deeper. Best tips and tactics for effective networking. Key Takeaways:Networking is about giving, more than anything, especially at the beginning, even if you don't see how it is going to come back to you. Have a couple of things that you can give in your back pocket, even if you are new to networking. Most networking relationships evolve and mature over time. Get to know those in your smaller circle best, but don't ignore others in your network. Following up is where the networking really starts. Make notes about the person and conversation you had, then make sure you follow up specifically, not in a blast email selling your services. "The good news is networking works. The less-than-good news is networking is work. It's not a horrible amount of work, it's not taxing, it's not expensive, but there is a process that if you want to be successful at it, you need to follow." — Julie Yusim Find out more about the Mastering the Legal Clock and Thriving Event at: https://fretzin.com/events Thank you to our Sponsors!Lawmatics: https://www.lawmatics.com/bethatlawyer/Get Staffed Up: https://getstaffedup.com/bethatlawyer/Green Cardigan Marketing: https://greencardiganmarketing.com/ Episode References: ProVisors: https://provisors.com/Boomerang for Outlook: https://www.boomerangoutlook.com/Book: Endless Referrals by Bob Burg - https://www.amazon.com/Endless-Referrals-Third-Bob-Burg/dp/0071462074 About Julie Yusim: Julie Yusim has spent the majority of her career coaching small business owners. Is it possible that your Doctoral Journey is the trigger for YOUR healing?Explore your dark night:Reduce fear, anxiety, uncertainty, overwhelm Heal your emotions, body, mind, thoughts AND soulKey Points:Because you don't have a ton of control in a doc program, allow situations to humble you and grow through the humilityDon't resist your growth Be aware of victim mentality (there is a difference between being victimized and living with a victim mentality)Get help if you need itSelf-care is non-negotiable; you cannot pour from an empty cupSoul Correction:1. Identify your Soul Corrections: “What is my greatest source of pain?”2. Notice how you respond: “How do I usually respond to this challenge?”3. Correct it by going against your nature: “How do I go against my nature and do something different?” (see techniques below)Remember: You don't draw into your world what you want, you draw into your world what you ARE. This is either empowering or feels like a cruel joke. Practices:1. 2, 4, 8 Breath – Breathe in quickly for 2, hold for 4, release slowly for 8. This creates a net positive oxygen saturation signaling all is OK!2. Shift Your Emotions - Label the emotion (i.e., exhausted), then take your attention away from the thought and bring it onto your body and all your senses (what does it taste like in my mouth, what do I see, etc.). The creates a conscious shift away from difficult thoughts.3. Cloud Floating Mediation - Label your thought, put it on a cloud, and watch it float away. Within a few seconds, a new thought will enter. Put it on a cloud, watch it float away…repeat. This shifts the balance from thoughts controlling you to you controlling your thoughts. Anna Raimondi - Talking to the Dead in Suburbia sponsored by The Angel Cooperative
In episode nineteen of Talking To The Dead In Suburbia, host Anna Raimondi – spiritual medium, motivational speaker, healer, and author – has a fascinating conversation about meditation, brain entrainment, and the healing power of sound with her expert guests: Karen Newell, Dr. Eben Alexander, and Dr. Anna Yusim. As mentioned in the episode, the Spirituality and Mental Health course created by this week's guests can be found at Becomingmorewhole.com. About this week's guests: Karen Newell - Karen Newell is an author and specialist in personal development with a diverse body of work that rests upon the foundation of heart-centered consciousness. Her personal growth programs, workshops, guided meditations and teachings enable individuals to achieve life transformations towards greater self-fulfillment and contentment, quality relationships and choices aligned with one's soul calling. As an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, Karen empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings and other techniques, she teaches how to enter and engage with your inner world to connect to guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness and develop intuition. Karen is co-author with Eben Alexander III, M.D. of Living in a Mindful Universe (2017). At international workshops presented with Dr. Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. Dr. Eben Alexander - After decades as a physician and teacher at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere, renowned academic neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander thought he knew how the brain, mind, and consciousness worked. A transcendental Near- Death Experience (NDE) during a week-long coma from an inexplicable brain infection changed all of that – completely. Memories of his life had been completely deleted, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm – more real than this earthly one! Since his 2008 NDE he has been reconciling his rich spiritual experience with contemporary physics and cosmology. We are conscious in spite of our brain. A pioneering scientist and thought leader in consciousness studies, Dr. Alexander has been a guest on Dr. Oz, Oprah, and many other media programs. His most recent book, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Heart of Consciousness, (co-authored with Karen Newell) has garnered accolades from many scientists around the world who study the mind-body question and the nature of consciousness. His earlier books, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife and The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion, and Ordinary People Are Proving the Afterlife, have collectively spent more than two years atop the New York Times and international bestseller lists. A disconnection from one's soul may present in many ways: anxiety, depression, obsessions, excessive worrying, suicidal thoughts, self-destructive behaviors, psychosis, mania, addictions, and phobias, among many other presentations Dr. Anna Yusim may see in her medical office. Traditional medical and psychiatric practice may attribute the above symptoms or illness to chemical imbalances in the brain that need to be fixed with medications. A deficit in serotonin leads to depression. Prozac increases serotonin and so cures depression. It's as easy as that. Or is it? In many cases, although medications can treat the symptoms resulting from a disconnection from one soul, they rarely treat the underlying etiology, which is the disconnection itself. Only by looking inside oneself and aligning with the deepest part of yourself can you address the root cause of the problem instead of the symptoms that result from it. Complete healing and fulfillment entails unearthing the root cause of the pain. In Dr. Anna Yusim medical practice, only about half of the patients she treats are on medication, which is a relatively low percentage for a psychiatrist. For certain patients, however, medications are a lifeline without which they feel they could not survive. Work of the soul is hard to do, even impossible, if you are so depressed that you cannot get out of bed, or so sleep-deprived from insomnia that you can barely function, or so anxious that you cannot leave the house, or in an opiate withdrawal so painful that you don't know if you will even survive the day. Engaging in soul work is necessary for complete healing, but it is predicated on first being able to function in this world. When clinically indicated, psychiatric medications can sometimes be the very tools that allow one to emerge from the darkness. In Dr. Anna Yusim's work, she delves deeply into the psychological and spiritual tools has have used with her patients and in her own life, to help them and herself connect to the soul and find greater fulfillment. In much of medicine, there is a longstanding, unfortunate split between science and spirituality. Valeria interviews Dr. Anna Yusim an award-winning, nationally recognized psychiatrist, speaker, and author with a private practice in New York City. She is a Lecturer on the Clinical Faculty of the Yale Psychiatry Department. Anna Yusim, M.D., works with many patients who come to her with the full spectrum of human issues, but one of the most common she sees is existential anxiety, a paralyzing fear for people who face it in their everyday lives. An award-winning psychiatrist, Yusim couples her medical practice with spiritual principles in order to treat this anxiety, which is a combination that truly promotes holistic healing for our minds, bodies, and souls. Olessa Pindak, mindbodygreen's CCO, sat down with Yusim on this week’s episode of the podcast to chat with her about the specific tools she utilizes during a psychotherapy session. She affirms that feeling anxious about our human existence is completely normal. Her first step to coping is to recognize that every human being has this same fear at some point in their lives (sometimes at many points in their lives, in fact), and that it’s a completely valid fear to have. Yusim is no stranger to supplements, and she believes that they can be helpful tools to cope with existential anxiety, especially if you’re living with any vitamin deficiencies already. “Sometimes, anxiety comes from low energy. People feel like something's off, and they feel so much anxiety because they don't feel like themselves,” she says. Even if you wouldn’t normally consider yourself to be especially spiritual, you’ll find that Yusim’s methods to cope with existential anxiety can help stress and uncertainty melt away. Just make sure to remember: Part of being human is pondering our mortality and the reasons why we're here. Anna is a nationally recognized psychiatrist, speaker and author with a private practice in New York City. After spending so much time studying and working with science, Anna felt there was something missing in her life so she set out to find it. She traveled, lived and worked in over 50 countries while studying Kabbalah, learning Buddhist meditation and working with South American shamans and Indian gurus. Her life goal for many years now has been to figure out how science and spirituality work hand in hand. And that's ultimately what led her to write her book, Fulfilled: The Science of Spirituality and How it Can Help You Live a Happier, More Meaningful Life. In this episode she shares with us her fundamental truths around fulfillment. Also learn about my Become Aligned course. The reason why my husband Chris and I created this course is because we get asked so many questions on how we started living the life that we live now, a life of happiness, of abundance, of really understanding that life is always full of problems every single day, but there's always a solution. In the course we cover everything from mindset to the rituals that we do every single day. We talk about different energy sources, we talk about your purpose, what that actually means and how it's always changing. We show you how to build a tribe to support where you're going. And we talk about wealth, abundance, money, all of the good things, and how to sustain them. Question Highlights: I want to know how science and spirituality work hand in hand. What is a really good starting place for people to start unpacking that? How does spirituality change your brainwaves? What is it about being fulfilled for you that made you want to write about this whole topic? What is your main false sense of fulfillment? And how did you figure out what was true for you? Is there something that you're surrendering right now? And what exactly is the narrative in your brain when you are releasing or letting go of something or offering it up? What does living in your purpose mean? Can your purpose change? How do we know when it changes? What are the fundamental truths that you have found around fulfillment for you? Radically Vibrant Anna We are an imprint of the ancestors who lived before us, as well as our parents, and that brings positive traditions and habits as well as negative thought patterns that no longer serve us We often ask the universe for such a specific request that something could be given to us that is so much better than we know but we miss it because our expectations are so narrow We need to live our lives and know the right doors will open when it’s time—we’re not here to worry but to enjoy ourselves Radically Inspired Clarity Spirituality comes into our lives when we’re ready for it and only then will we see the opportunity for spiritual transformation Ninety-nine percent of reality is unseen and unheard and only 1% is seen and heard from the conscious mind People object the idea of forgiveness without realizing the person benefiting the most from it is us Anna Answers… How did you realize how important spirituality was in order for you to feel fulfilled? How does our inner world connect to our ancestral imprints? How were you able to integrate daily practice into your spiritual journey? Radically Loved Quotes “When we localize our power outside of ourselves and blame other people, we become a victim.” “Once you transform your inner world, your outer world transforms by association.” “There is nothing that could be a more inefficient way to live our lives than to be angry and resentful.” More About Our Guest Anna Yusim is a psychiatrist living in New York City. “You may look like you have it all-- yet deep down in those rare moments when your defenses fall away, you stand naked, aware of a deep inner void with no idea how to fill it.” - Dr. Anna Yusim We may have good intentions, we may just do it to feel safe, but so many of us wear a mask to keep ourselves disconnected and secure in the identity that we’ve created. And although our main intention’s to protect us from possible pain, we don’t realize we’re causing so much more discomfort in keeping up the façade. Listen in as Dr. Anna Yusim, an award-winning, nationally-recognized psychiatrist, speaker, and author, tells us why we need to listen to that nagging voice within that so desperately wants to be heard. After working as a neurobiologist researcher with Dr. Robert Sapolsky and completing her studies at Stanford, Yale Medical School, and the NYU psychiatry residency training program, Anna felt that something was missing in her life. In her quest to find it, she traveled, lived, and worked in over 50 countries while studying kabbalah, learning Buddhist meditation and working with South American shamans and Indian gurus. Her latest book, Fulfilled: How The Science Of Spirituality Can Help You Live A Happier More Meaningful Life was released earlier this year and is the essence of her advice shared today. Get ready to reveal the real, authentic you to the world-- and even to yourself! Key Takeaways: Your pain reliever. When do you most often discover what you’re really made of? When you hit rock bottom, in your deepest moments of pain. Right from the start Anna shares ways to reconnect with yourself -- through good times and bad. The THREE ways to finding your true essence are…[02:36]. Your big reveal. Whether we want to admit it or not, many of us wear a mask that hides our true self. Within our disguise we cling onto an addiction -- substance, obsession with achievement or fame, etc. -- that helps us continue the façade. Ready to break free? Try THIS…[12:20]. Your healing method. Our connection to pain’s one that is fierce, and yet, somehow comforting. It’s a downward cycle that convinces us that we’re not worthy of loving, of happiness, or even self-care. And although there are deconstructive ways to filling the void, there are also constructive options. Discover the GOOD ways to finding fulfillment…[19:11]. Your unconscious mind. Tapping into a part of yourself that believes there’s something greater has nothing to do with religion or spirituality. Call this essence God, Mother Nature, the universe – but it’s bigger than you’ve ever imagined and it’s here to guide you. Discover this “something” greater by knowing THIS…[26:49]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.
