The Future of Education Now 2025 (#FOEN25) festival, held at WAB from March 13 to 15, brought together students, educators, parents, and thought leaders to explore the evolving landscape of education (add link). In this special episode of the WAB Podcast, we have a recording from a very special panel from FOEN25. Moderated by Stephen Taylor, WAB's Director of Innovation in Learning and Teaching, this conversation was joined by three WAB students: Ryan from Grade 10 and Cali and Hannah from Grade 11, and global education leaders including:    Jason Cummings, Director of Member Engagement of Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC)  Ellen Heyting, Project Lead for International Networks and Credentialing from Melbourne Metrics  Trillium Hibben, Director of Commission on International Education at New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)  Jane Larsson, Executive Director of the Council of International Schools (CIS)  Angela Meikle, Global Head of Private IB Schools of International Baccalaureate (IB)  Together, the panel explored how education is evolving beyond traditional assessments, emphasizing competency-based learning and the recognition of student-driven achievements. Speakers highlighted how new tools and approaches are providing a more holistic view of student progress, moving beyond grades to assess real-world skills and competencies. Schools and universities are shifting towards formative, competency-based assessments that allow students to showcase not just what they know, but what they can do.  Students shared how their projects—ranging from scientific research to organizing student-led initiatives—illustrate the impact of hands-on, real-world learning. Their experiences underscored how students thrive when given opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. The discussion also emphasized the need for new ways to credential essential skills such as collaboration, ethical decision-making, and leadership.  Another key theme was the increasing role of student voices in shaping education. Schools and organizations are moving towards more collaborative models, ensuring that students are active participants in designing their learning experiences. Accreditation processes are also evolving, focusing more on the impact of education rather than compliance, to better support students in a rapidly changing world.  As the session concluded, the panelists expressed optimism about the future of education, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between schools, universities, and accreditation bodies to create learning environments that develop both knowledge and essential competencies. To hear the full discussion, tune in to this extra special episode of the WAB Podcast.

Send us a Text Message. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Kevin Bartlett, the Founding Director of the Common Ground Collaborative. This episode is part of my 'Perspectives on Pedagogy' podcast series which are education-based in nature, but rooted deeply in what it means to lead and learn with purpose and intentionality. A quote comes to mind when I think about Kevin: "A great educational leader possesses a unique set of qualities and skills that enable them to effectively guide and shape the educational institutions they oversee."Kevin does just that and has done it for decades in the field of education. He has a long history of creating true change in educational institutions. Throughout his decades of experience in the field of education, Kevin has learned to combine visionary thinking, strong communication, empathy and his genuine commitment to learning and growth into everything he does both personally and professionally in his life. He leads with integrity and is a true advocate for inclusivity which is evidenced by the schools he's helped transform over the years. Not only does he speak his truth with clarity and conviction, he is probably one of the biggest supporters of teachers I have ever come across. As a very experienced educational leader, Kevin has committed himself to making the professional lives of teachers more meaningful, manageable and rewarding. He knows how difficult a teacher's job is and, as a consultant, he works on the ground with them, in their own space. He choses to teach and learn alongside them rather than from an ivory tower preaching about what good teaching practice is. In our conversation today, Kevin shares his thoughts on educational leadership and what each leader's role/responsibility is in creating schools that truly prioritize meaningful learning. We also dive into Kevin's story and what drives him in the work that he does. Kevin also shares a genuine example of what a great school actually looks like in action, using one of the organizations that he works closely with through his consulting role. You will hear all about this school in our podcast today. I want to thank Kevin for his time and energy and agreeing to come on my podcast. It was an honor to have this conversation with him. I hope that any educational leader out there listening to this learns something new from Kevin today that they can immediately applied in their own leadership practice. Thanks for listening and please share this episode and my new podcast with any educator who you feel will benefit from tuning in.About Kevin:Kevin has held leadership positions in the UK, Tanzania, Namibia, Austria, and Belgium, where he was most recently Director of the International School of Brussels from 2001-2015.Kevin has co-designed accreditation systems for the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEAS&C) and is currently engaged with a small team developing ACE, an innovative new accreditation protocol for NEAS&C.Kevin is a regular author of articles on a range of topics, a keynoter/workshop leader at multiple international and national conferences, and on-site consultant on a wide range of topics. He is a writer and trainer in the field of curriculum design and leadership for learning for the Principals' Training Center. In this episode, Lisa and Cristiana discuss:Families often default to in-state for financial reasons, but out-of-state can sometimes provide better financial and academic opportunities. Why many schools are increasing the number of out-of-state students admitted. Misconceptions that misguide families when considering where to apply to college. The financial implications and academic opportunities available for students at different institutions. Key Takeaways: Private or out-of-state schools may have better financial aid opportunities than your in-state public universities. In many regions of the country, tuition discounts are available in neighboring states. Some college majors will require your student to attend school out of state or in a different region.Admitting more out-of-state students brings diversity that might not be there otherwise.“The biggest mistake families make is to look at sticker price.” – Cristiana QuinnAbout Cristiana Quinn: Cristiana Quinn has been an independent college admission advisor for more than 15 years. 31 years ago, Ralph Nader delivered his first speech to the New England Association of Buyer Agents. In retrospect, it was a "Coming of Age" for buyer agents and an occasion Nader used to call for a consumer movement in housing. Unfortunately, since then, buyer agency has been coopted and the affordable housing crisis generated more headlines than housing units. So, while The Boston Globe Spotlight focuses on the housing crisis we'll invite fellow real estate consumer advocates to aggregate content to take take our message directly to consumers - both homebuyers and sellers across Massachusetts. Over the next 50 days, we hope to aggregate and share content here and on social media from our peers. If we do that twice daily, that will generate 100 updates over next 50 days. Why 100? That number reflects the magnitude of potential consumer savings EVERY month across Massachusetts -- a stunning $100 million per month - from one of the massive class action lawsuits against the real estate cartel, aka #RECartel. Why 50 days? There are 50 days till the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, and as in the past we'll use that date to talk about throwing real estate commissions overboard. This year it's not a question of whether that will happen, it's whether the proposed #MLSpinSettlement and others will deliver BILLIONS annually in consumer savings - as is the Department of Justice's goal. Our hope is to help homebuyers and sellers learn how they can get their piece of those savings, and we look forward to interviewing some of them for this series. In this episode, Mark talks with Ariel Serkin and Brenda Royce about improving student mathematical reasoning. They have given a workshop and a webinar on the topics, and have been working on these ideas for the last few years and have great examples for getting at the thinking needed for students to understand the math involved in the sciences we teach. Guests Ariel Serkin Ariel Serkin has been teaching since 2001, most recently as chemistry teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. When Ariel started teaching chemistry after a decade as a history teacher, she looked for ways to take her skills as a historian and bring chemistry alive. Through Modeling Instruction, Ariel's enables students to develop conceptual models through experimentation, whiteboarding, and class discussions. Trained as a Modeling Instruction leader in 2018, Ariel has led numerous workshops for American Modeling Teachers Association, STEMteachersMassBay, New England Association of Chemistry Teachers and at local, regional, and national conferences on Modeling Instruction, standards based grading, and equity in the science classroom. Ariel currently serves as president for STEMteachersMassBay, and has served as regional representative for American Association of Chemistry Teachers, AACT and on the executive board of the NEACT. She also writes for ChemEdXchange. https://www.twitter.com/aserkin (Twitter) | https://instagram.com/ariel.serkin (Instagram) | https://www.facebook.com/ariel.serkin/ (Facebook) Brenda Royce Brenda Royce has her B.A. in Chemistry from California State University, Fresno and M.A. in Education from Fresno Pacific University. She has taught high school chemistry and physics for 27 years after a 14-year career as an environmental analytical chemist and research assistant. She has been using Modeling Instruction in her classes since 1998. Brenda has conducted numerous training workshops in the practices of Modeling Instruction for pre-service and in-service teachers since 2000 in California, Arizona, Texas, and Pennsylvania as well as made presentations about Modeling Instruction at NSTA, WRNC, ChemEd, and BCCE conferences. She has been one of the lead contributors in the development of curriculum materials for Modeling Instruction in chemistry. Highlights [4:16] Brenda Royce: "students, if you ask them, how does this compare to that? They will always subtract the two values, just about 90% of the time" [4:33] Brenda Royce: "When they wanna know if they know something, they look to see if they got the right answer, but not the reasons behind it. Whereas of course, scientific community is the why. And ...what caused it to be that way. That's our definition of knowing." [9:58] Brenda Royce "we're distinguishing quantities that are single measurements and relationships that have two different measurements that are intricately linked to one another. " [14:52] Ariel Serkin "So our goal here is to take these abstract concepts and to make them a little more concrete and to put back these diagrams and actual manipulatives, ... to help build their conceptual understanding. And at the same time, they're building their mathematical confidence in what we're doing" Resources Download Transcript https://sciencemodelingtalks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/SMT-Ep37-ArielSerkin-BrendaRoyce-Transcript.pdf (Ep 37 Transcript) Links https://www.bcce2022.org/ (Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE))

What is adult family mediation? Join us on this episode where we welcome guest Halee Burg, an Affiliate Mediator with Elder Decisions®, a division of Agreement Resources, LLC. Sometimes families get stuck. We can't agree and we don't know how to move forward. Adult family or elder mediation is an effective method of making difficult family decisions. Mediators are highly skilled, neutral, conflict resolution experts who do not provide advice or "take sides" but, instead, facilitate purposeful and directed conversations in which family members are encouraged to express their interests and concerns. Three key takeaways from this episode: First, mediation is one of the least adversarial methods to resolve disputes. It is a method of facilitated negotiation. There are other options, including arbitration and litigation, that leave the ultimate decision up to a third party. Second, the process may not be a quick one. It is a future-orientated, problem-solving process. While this method is designed to be short-term, it doesn't necessarily mean a resolution will come quickly. Third, mediation is not the same as therapy, but it can feel therapeutic. The goal of mediation is to come to a resolution with solutions and actionable plans for moving forward but the process itself often feels helpful and productive. Agreement Resources, LLC - Adult Family and Elder Mediation About Halee Burg: A former practicing attorney who now focuses solely on mediation, to give back and help ensure broader access to mediation, Halee participates in community and court mediations through a number of greater Boston community mediation programs. As an active member of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation, the Academy of Professional Family Mediators, the National Association of Divorce Professionals, and the New England Association for Conflict Resolution, Halee continually expands her knowledge of the field, regularly participates in dialogues with colleagues about best practices and approaches, and develops relationships with professionals in related fields whose expertise helps support clients as they work to make informed decisions. A graduate of the University of Rochester (BA, Psychology, summa cum laude) and the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley (J.D), Halee discovered she also enjoyed being on the other side of instruction, and regularly teaches adult education classes regarding divorce in Massachusetts. When not helping people become unstuck, Halee keeps busy pursuing her other passions – photographing beautiful landscapes, getting lost in a good novel, traveling, cooking, golfing, or spending special time with friends and family. On today’s episode, I’m joined by Kirsten Behling, the Director of the Office of Disability Services (ODS) at Suffolk University. Prior to joining Suffolk, Kirsten worked for the University Centers of Excellence on Disability at both the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University of New Hampshire.
