It is a memoir written by Roddy Bottum, a musician and artist, that documents through prose his coming of age and out of the closet in 1980s San Francisco, a charged era of bicycle messengers, punk rock, street witches, wheatgrass, and rebellion. The book follows his travels from Los Angeles, growing up gay with no role models, to San Francisco, where he formed Faith No More and went on to tour the world relentlessly, surviving heroin addiction and the plight of AIDS, to become a queer icon. This is an encore presentation of a 2022 broadcast.  Patti Smith is a writer, performer, and visual artist who gained recognition in the 1970s for her revolutionary merging of poetry and rock. She has released numerous albums and books including her seminal record Horses, hailed as one of the top 100 albums of all time; Just Kids, a beautifully crafted love letter to her lifelong friend, the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe; and M Train, a collection of essays about memory, loss, and the simple pleasures of everyday life. Her new book, A Book of Days, is an intimate view into Smith's life, particularly as it played out during the pandemic, and it features over 365 of her own photographs. The brilliantly idiosyncratic visual book features a year's worth of images and reflections that chart Smith's singular aesthetic—inspired by her wildly popular Instagram. Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.  On November 28, 2022, Patti Smith came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco for an on-stage conversation with novelist Michael Chabon.

My guest this week is the novelist Betsy Lerner.  Now Betsy is here to talk about her critically acclaimed debut novel, Shred Sisters, which takes us from the 1970s to the 90s and tells us the story of two troubled sisters, Amy and Ollie. No less a legend than Patti Smith described it as “moving like a souped up pick up truck” - and who am I to argue with Patti, it does! I loved it. Betsy only turned to fiction in her early sixties. Before that she had a prolific career in the publishing industry spanning thirty years as an editor and literary agent working on such classics as Prozac Nation, Autobiography of a Face and Just Kids. But she hasn't stopped there, Betsy has also built a large following on TikTok, where she shares passages from her diaries or the 'chronicles of disappointment, depression and loneliness' as she calls them, that she kept in her 20s when she was cycling through the highs and lows of bipolar disorder. Betsy joined me to talk about sibling rivalry, ageing, heartbreak and the family secret that shaped her. We also discussed escaping the maternal mantle of judgement, her personal mission to destigmatise mental illness, disordered eating, gratitude and why she loves “her twenty somethings” on TikTok. When Stephen Colbert says that the devastating loss of his father and brothers in a fatal plane crash taught him gratitude one has to step back in awe and wonder to reflect on the heart tugging idea that grief may be a gift. Today we feature two survivors of loss - physical and spiritual. When Lucinda Williams asked “If we lived in a world without tears, how would broken find the bones?…” she hinted at this enigma 17 years before a stroke almost took her life; Patti Smith survived a punishing revolving door of grief: losing her husband Fred, her brother Todd, her best friend Robert, and somehow she moved through it all to create one of the most incendiary recordings of her career - after an 8 year hiatus. PATTI SMITHPatti Smith is a national treasure - (I don't throw that title around) - although, she'd probably demur saying she was just a chick from New Jersey who got lucky. But, anyone familiar with her memoir Just Kids knows it wasn't luck that drove this waitress with artistic aspirations to migrate to New York City to seek her rock n roll fortune among the poetic luminaries of the era - it was true grit and an unshakeable confidence in her talent.I admired her then -  in Sinatra drag on the cover of her debut album Horses, with all that tomboy swagger, but I LOVE her now as our eternally youthful elder poetess, touring the world like a good will ambassador for the embattled Peace and Love generation. On the song Gone Again she rages against loss, even as she acquiesces to its inevitability.LUCINDA WILLIAMSLucinda Williams is the ideal blend of tough and tender, of homespun heart and poetic sophistication. She is one of the best singer songwriters America has produced, and that's saying something. She's a short story Magus with an authentic Southern twang, whose autobiographical fiction stirs the heart like few others can.Her album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, released in 1998, brought her to the attention of a much broader national audience, and her open hearted vulnerability proved both a blessing and a curse. Her artistic output and touring schedule accelerated, but in 2020, those wheels came off the axel, when a stroke took away her ability to play and sing. Thankfully, she's been working her way back, and the last chapter hasn't been written yet.

The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast. 

Charlotte Parker started Head magazine while working an entry level publishing job at Penthouse, in order to cover the world of weed in depth at a time long before legalization. Looking back at a few covers from those 1970s glory days shows she was well ahead of the curve, with stories like “How to Make Hash Oil in Your Kitchen,” and “Grow the Most Potent Pot Plants Indoors.” Plus, Head featured interviews with the likes of Patti Smith and reviews of the best weed and hash then available. Hear Charlotte tell the whole story, including the rebirth of Head she's currently cultivating.

Patti Smith (1946-present) is an American singer, songwriter, poet, author, and visual artist. A pivotal figure in the New York City punk rock scene, her 1975 debut album “Horses” fused rock with poetic intensity. Patti Smith is also the author of the acclaimed memoir “Just Kids” about her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and her early years as an artist.
