Its size and output (400,000 barrels per day) would have made it the largest refinery in the world, and thereby putting the entire Seacoast ecosystem and natural beauty at risk. But the residents of Durham, led by three women in particular, refused to let it happen. From the West End of Portsmouth, Professor David W. Moore, a senior fellow at UNH's Carsey School of Public Policy and author of "Small Town, Big Oil: The Untold Story of the Women Who Took on the World's Richest Man-And Won" joins host Troy Farkas to spill the tea on the relationship between Onassis and Jackie Kennedy (JFK's widow), and to discuss how the world's richest man had landed upon Durham Point, the state government's push for the refinery, the citizens' opposition to it, and why the Seacoast would look drastically different had Onassis succeeded.CHAPTERS:6/19 live podcast details (00:00)Aristotle Onassis' dream of building an oil refinery (01:07)Jackie Kennedy's odd marriage to Onassis (05:25)Why Durham, N.H., was the ideal spot for the refinery (13:00)SPONSOR: Meconi Financial Management & Advisory (24:32)SPONSOR: Holistic & Hormonal (25:58)Why the citizens were opposed to the refinery (27:28)How the media cozied up to Onassis (35:11)What if the refinery had been built? Infinity is a puzzling idea. Even young children are fascinated by its various manifestations: What is the biggest number? Does the universe have an edge? Does time have a beginning? Philosophers have tried to answer these questions since time immemorial. More recently, they have been joined by scientists and mathematicians. Indeed, a whole branch of mathematics has become dedicated to the study of infinity.  So what have we learned? Can we finally understand infinity? And what has this quest taught us about ourselves?  To explore this topic, I am joined by philosopher Adrian W. Moore.  Professor Moore is a special guest for two reasons. First, he is a world expert on infinity, known for an excellent BBC series, "History of the Infinite". More personally, he is the head tutor of Philosophy at St Hugh's College, Oxford, where I studied my BA in Philosophy and Psychology. It has now been ten years since Prof Moore interviewed me and, for whatever reason, accepted me as a student. I feel honoured to mark the occasion with this episode. In this episode, we discuss: (02:35) Why infinity fascinates (12:20) Greeks on infinity (20:05) A finite cosmos?  (25:00) Zeno's paradoxes (32:35) Answering Zeno (42:35) Measuring infinities? Georg Cantor (54:05) Infinity vs human understanding (66:20) Mystics on infinity As always, we finish with Prof Moore's reflections on humanity. LINKS Want to support the show? In what is becoming a disturbing pattern in Christian higher education, I was contacted by another professor who was fired for her teachings about racial justice.  Professor Julie Moore, formerly of Taylor University, taught a composition class with a racial justice theme. She's been doing this for years. But in January of 2023, her provost refused to renew her contract. As part of the paltry evidence for the dismissal, he cited a quote from me that Professor Moore used in the introduction to her syllabus.  Listen to Professor Moore's story as well as how she and Professor Sam Joeckel are calling the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) to act.  Also check out Professor Moore's open letter describing her ordeal on my Substack: JemarTisby.Substack.com  Learn more about your ad choices. The pandemic forced millions of workers to work from home but that transition did not go as smoothly for women as it did for men. The pandemic didn't only send home employees, but their children as well. The division of household chores has affected women's ability to advance in their careers and, therefore, women's equality in the workplace. However, in order to achieve an egalitarian workplace, we must also focus on egalitarian households.   In this final episode, Professor Celia Moore and alumnus Avni Vij  share their experiences  in transitioning to more flexible working and the challenges gender expectations still present. They also discuss the way they are reframing their personal lives and relationships to ensure young girls around them don't internalise traditional gender roles.    Want to know more? Welcome and Merry Christmas! As you undoubtedly know by now, this is my favorite time of the year. I love the decorations, the lights, I love the stories. I know I mentioned my love of A Christmas story, but what you may not know is that I have a favorite Christmas poem. I love it so much in fact that this week I am dedicating a whole show to it.Not only is it an amazing poem, but it is also one of the oldest and most popular Christmas poems ever written. The poem, originally titled, “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, now more popularly called “Twas the Night Begore Christmas” was written in the early 19th century. Considerable controversy surrounded the authorship for many years. It is believed that either Clement Clark Moore or Henry Livingston, Jr. were the authors. Clement Clarke Moore lived between 1779 and 1863. A writer and American Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, he also taught Divinity and Biblical Learning, in New York City. He rose to prominence and eventually donated the land which would become a seminary, which continues at Chelsea Square. It is believed that Professor Moore wrote the poem for his children. Initially he didn’t want to publish it as he was afraid of his reputation as a scholar. As the story has it, he eventually did publish the story anonymously on Dec. 23, 1823 in the Troy Sentinel newspaper in upstate New York.Henry Livingston Jr., although there is really no evidence he claimed authorship of the piece during his life time, is also credited with writing the piece.Henry Livingston Jr., was a revolutionary war soldier and late became a poet. His children had claimed that the poem, “A visit from St. Nicholas”, was something they remember their father reading them a number of years earlier. One of the descendants claimed to have had the original story, with cross outs, in the text, but that was destroyed in a house fire in Wisconsin. So, there is no way to authenticate his story. The two men didn’t know eachtoher, although one of the Livingston relatives did marry a relative of Moore’s. There is no evidence Moore could have gotten a copy from Livingston or vice verse.Based on the facts surrounding this strange case of who is the real author, I would argue that likely Professor Moore is the author. However, there is one other fact you may want to know. A fairly recent study of the grammatical structure of the piece and the writings of both men suggest that Livingston may have been the actual author. What is also tantalizing is that in the original version of the poem, what we commonly name the reindeer, “Donner and Blitzen”, are spelled “Dunder and Blixem”. Which is Dutch. Livingston was Dutch, while Moore was not. Moore did not speak Dutch either. So, maybe I change my vote to Livingston?I am not going to wade farther into this controversy. But I think it is fascinating that after all these years there are still some mysteries out there which cannot be solved objectively. And isn’t that what a good story is? A mystery? For when we pick up a book, short story, or a poem, there is a quickening of our heartbeat, a more rapid movement of our blood, a tingle on our skin as we have no idea how that story is going to end. That is what good writing does for us. It provides mystery. As the poem ends, Happy Christmas to All, and to All a Goodnight!Support the show (http://paypal.me/BryanNowak)

Just in time for the election, Entrepreneurial Appetite, BEST San Antonio, and The Heman Sweatt Center for Black Males bring you a very special book discussion about The Defeat of Black Power Civil Rights and the National Black Political Convention of 1972 by Leonard N. Moore, PhD.About the Book:"For three days in 1972 in Gary, Indiana, eight thousand American civil rights activists and Black Power leaders gathered at the National Black Political Convention, hoping to end a years-long feud that divided black America into two distinct camps: integrationists and separatists. While some form of this rift existed within black politics long before the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his death—and the power vacuum it created—heightened tensions between the two groups, and convention leaders sought to merge these competing ideologies into a national, unified call to action. What followed, however, effectively crippled the Black Power movement and fundamentally altered the political strategy of civil rights proponents. An intense and revealing history, Leonard N. Moore’s The Defeat of Black Power provides the first in-depth evaluation of this critical moment in American history.About the author:Leonard N. Moore is the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement and the George Littlefield Professor of American History at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and earned his B.A. from Jackson State University in 1993 and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1998. He was a history professor at Louisiana State University from 1998-2007, where he also directed the African and African American Studies Program and the Pre-Doctoral Scholars' Institute. He has been at The University of Texas at Austin since 2007 and was made permanent Vice President on June 13, 2018, after having served as interim for a year. At UT Austin he teaches a class on the black power movement and a signature course titled "Race in the Age of Trump." In the fall semester, he teaches more than 1,000 students across both courses. His innovative, unique, and engaging teaching style was featured as a cover story in the September/October 2015 edition of the Alcalde. Dr. Moore has received a number of teaching awards including the Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching and the John Warfield Teaching Award. Moore also directs study abroad programs in Beijing and Cape Town, which have become national models for diversifying global education. In 2004, he was awarded the National Urban League Whitney M. Young Award for Urban Leadership in Education.Professor Moore is the author of three books on black politics, The Defeat of Black Power: Civil Rights and the National Black Political Convention of 1972 (Louisiana State University Press, 2018), Black Rage in New Orleans: Police Brutality and African American Activism from World War II to Hurricane Katrina (Louisiana State University Press, 2010), and Carl B. Stokes and the Rise of Black Political Power in America (University of Illinois Press, 2002). Carl B. Stokes was nominated for the 2002 NAACP Image Award for best non-fiction book. He is currently working on a biography of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the controversial pastor, congressman, and civil rights leader. Moore is also active in the Austin community and currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Austin Area Urban League. The book can be purchased at:https://lsupress.org/books/detail/defeat-of-black-power/www.amazon.com

When it comes to a capital case, prosecuting or defending an individual whose life rests on the verdict can be a personal struggle. How does a lawyer cope with the loss of a client and what restorative justice options can they seek in lieu of the death penalty? In this episode of the ABA Law Student Podcast, host Fabiani Duarte and guest host Linsey Addington speak with Professor Sarah Gerwig Moore and Dr. Melissa Browning about the death penalty and ways restorative justice concepts can be used in capital cases. Sarah and Melissa begin by listing a few concepts and common misconceptions, such as the cost to the taxpayer for executing an inmate, that they believe should be considered when approaching the death penalty debate. Dr. Browning then goes into detail about how she learned about the Kelly Gissendaner case and what inspired her to get involved in seeking parole for Gissendaner. Professor Moore also gives some insight into her experience of being lead counsel seeking clemency for a death row inmate named Josh Bishop and explains the type of relationships lawyers can develop with these clients. The group then considers processes within the criminal justice system where restorative justice concepts can be applied and how these concepts, like seeking life without the possibility of parole, can reduce death row executions and promote communal well being.

Over recent decades, the richer world has poured money towards poorer countries, in the form of aid and loans for development over many decades. But is this top-down solution really effective? Anthropologist Henrietta Moore argues that the age of development is over, and that we need to move to new ideas about how to improve human lives. Professor Moore, who heads the Institute for Global Prosperity at University College London, says that the fatal flaw of "development" is that it is a concept invented by the global North and imposed on the global South. She speaks to students from across the world at Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government, who and then faces their questions. The lecture is chaired by the school's dean, Professor Ngaire Woods. Producer: Julie Ball.
