I share the inspiring story of Kalyn Walker, who was granted parole from SCI Phoenix and released on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Kalyn graduated from the F.A.C.T. Experience (Fathers and Children Together) with his daughter in 2023, a transformative program that strengthens connections between incarcerated fathers and their children, aiming to break the cycle of incarceration. To celebrate his release, the F.A.C.T. Experience organized a heartfelt luncheon to surprise Kalyn's daughter and his son—whom he had never seen outside the prison walls. I had the privilege of witnessing and recording this powerful reunion with the help of my longtime friend, Kempis Songster, also known as Gani. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[a] made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[b] Since we have that same spirit of[c] faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health's IF I CAN QUIT, SO CAN YOU campaign is designed to stop tobacco-use among all smokers, but particularly those in high-risk groups including:● Those in recovery from substance use, including opioid use● Pregnant or new moms ● Identify as LGBTQIA+● Individuals who work at places where tobacco use and exposure are high (e.g., food service, hospitality industry, trade professions, etc.)● Active duty members and veterans of the armed forces Hispanic and Latino communitiesI speak to Ryan Coffman, Tobacco Policy and Control Program Manager, Philadelphia Department of Public Health about the campaign that features real Philadephia who are former smokers to encourage and inspire other Philadelphians to quit. Coffman also discusses the resources available including the PA Free Quitline 1-800-QUIT-NOW. When it comes to HIV and AIDS, we can get to zero infections, zero deaths and zero stigma. at the beginning of this pandemic - that hope seemed impossible but with the advent of new drugs that greatly reduce the chance of HIV infection among the sexually active - maybe this dream is possible through the use of PrEP – a regular treatment that reduces the risk of HIV up to 99 percent. I speak to local musician Sug Daniels who is supporting the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's efforts to offer free and confidential HIV testing, free PrEP, and other resources— to help combat AIDS and Javontae Lee Williams, Prevention Program manager for the division of HIV Health for the Department of Public Health. Episode Outline/TakeawaysIn short, risky substances (tobacco, alcohol, and drugs) are bad.Even bad habits like heavy social media usage can affect you negatively or take up alarge amount of time.We often spend a lot of time shaming ourselves for these bad habits and waste ourenergy.Habit stacking is a great behavioral intervention where you take multiple small habitsthat are already automatic and stacking them together. This enables you to start or stopdoing something.For example: If you have difficulties waking up in the morning, you can set a routinewhere you start your coffee machine as soon as you get up from bed. Then afterwashing your face, your coffee is ready for you to drink while checking your emails.Creating this habit trains your brain to recognize that this is a reward to look forward towhen you wake up resulting in it being easier over time.Another example: If you aimlessly scroll through social media while brushing your teeth,you can try to do something else like turning off and dimming the lights in your housewhile brushing your teeth instead. You are replacing the bad habit with something new.If you find yourself doing things like trying to relax after work with a glass or two of wine,remove the “with” part of it and realize you ultimately just want to relax. Now findsomething new that is relaxing like playing with your dog, talking on the phone to afriend, etc. Takeaways:Substance use is an important problem. In today's podcast, Adrienne Johnson, PhD, discusses her research on cigarette smoking and risk for dementia and Alzheimer's disease. As part of a 2021 study, she found a person's risk for dementia and Alzheimer's disease can be affected by how recently they've smoked. Diving into her research, the effects of smoking on different communities, and resources to support current smokers as they quit, Dr. Johnson details the impact of smoking on the brain and her hopes to develop new interventions to motivate smokers to quit for good. We've reached a milestone in the menthol movement! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a ban on menthol flavoring in cigarettes. It's the ingredient that hooks many African American smokers and makes it harder for them to quit. Though this is a pivotal moment in the fight against tobacco, we can't ignore the damage that has been done to the African American community in the last 10 years alone. The Center of Black Health & Equity is one of many organizations that has pushed for this change. The Public Health Law Center and The African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council were also part of a large petition to ban menthol in 2013. Tobacco companies have targeted Black communities extensively to use menthol and tobacco for decades.In this episode we expand on this history, respond to the opposition and share the hope we have for the future of Black health. May 31 is world no tobacco day sponsored yearly, since 1987 by the Member States of the World Health Organization. World No Tobacco Day every year informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the world Health organization is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. This year's theme is prevention of smoking by our youth and awareness of how tobacco companies market to younger generations. This year, the World Health Organization is encouraging efforts that empower young people to stand up to big tobacco companies by resisting their ads and marketing and refusing to use any tobacco or nicotine products including e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. Here are 5 reasons your urologist may tell you not to smoke according to the Urology Care Foundation:   Bladder Cancer: May is bladder cancer awareness month. This year over 80,000 will be told they have bladder cancer. Smoking causes harmful chemicals to collect in the urine. These chemicals affect the lining of the bladder and significantly raise your bladder cancer risk.  Erectile Dysfunction impacts 20-30 million American men. Erectile Dysfunction is most commonly a result of poor blood flow to the penis. Smoking harms blood vessels, mostly arterial health, which impacts the blood flow to the penis with the result in not being able to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Kidney Cancer. Kidney Cancer is in the top ten most common cancers for men and women, combining for more than 70,000 cases of kidney cancer expected this year. When smoking, carcinogens are drawn into the lungs and then into the bloodstream where they are filtered by the kidneys. The harmful chemicals increase your risk of getting kidney cancer. Incontinence, urine leaking, and Overactive Bladder (OAB), impact more than 33 million men and women. The chemicals from smoking and vaping bother the bladder and can contribute frequent urination. Smoking can also cause coughing spasms that can lead to urine leakage. Smoking can harm the eggs in the female and sperm in the male. The infertility rate for smokers is twice the rates for those who do not smoke.  You don't have to do it alone. Your family, your friends, and your doctors will help you.
