In this episode of Native Circles, Dr. Farina King, co-editor of COVID-19 in Indian Country, talks with co-authors Dr. Amoneeta Beckstein and Dr. Tapati Dutta about their chapter, exploring the lived experiences of eight Native American college students during the pandemic. Drawing from semi-structured interviews, the chapter centers the students' voices as they navigate the challenges of COVID-19—illuminating themes of historical trauma, mental health struggles, and educational disruptions rooted in colonial legacies. Yet, amid these hardships, stories of resilience or "reziliency," cultural strength, and community support arise. In this conversation, the authors reflect on their perspectives as researchers and underscore the students' expressions of survivance, collectivistic coping, and cultural healing.Dr. Beckstein is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Fort Lewis College whose work focuses on multicultural counseling, mindfulness, and decolonizing psychology to promote healing for BIPOC and Indigenous communities. He previously directed the Counseling Center at Webster University Thailand and brings a creative approach to mental health, including poetry and advocacy. Dr. Charles R. Rogers is a rock star in the field of cancer health disparities and inequities in men's health. He is a behavioral scientist and master certified health education specialist (MCHES). Dr. Rogers is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Utah's School of Medicine, where he founded the Men's Health Inequities Research Lab. Just last year, He also founded the https://crcequity.org/ (Colorectal Cancer Equity Foundation), focused on removing obstacles to equity among African-American men and other underrepresented populations by increasing awareness of Colorectal cancer. African-American men have died from colorectal cancer at the highest rates of any racial/ethnic group in the U.S. for more than 25 years. They are less frequently enrolled in clinical trials, and less likely to be offered genetic testing, palliative care, and other critical supports. Dr. Rogers is helping to lead the movement to change that picture.  In some of Dr. Rogers' latest research, he shows that men who identify as “strong” are the least likely to get cancer screenings. If they get diagnosed with cancer, they are also less likely to seek second opinions, or get help for mental health problems. All of this puts these men at HIGHER risk to die from cancer, and to NOT be around to care for their families.  So the men who think of themselves as strong, are actually behaving in a way that makes them vulnerable. This is the same exact barrier that I'm confronting in my advocacy work with Man Up to Cancer! We need to change culture so that screening for cancer is a sign of strength, not of weakness.  For a full bio of Dr. Rogers, https://crrogersphd.com/about/ (click here to visit his website).

Rabies is among the deadliest communicable diseases in the world with a case-fatality rate of ~100% with out post exposure treatment and vaccination. People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. It is also possible, but quite rare, that people may get rabies if infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, gets directly into their eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound. While human rabies deaths are rare in the US, with maybe 1-2 cases annually, according to the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, some 70,000 people die from this preventable viral disease each year. Pamela Wilson, LVT, MEd, MCHES joined me for a comprehensive Q & A on rabies. Pamela works for Zoonosis Control with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in Austin and is the author of a number of articles on the topic of rabies.
