There is a custom that some observe to read the section of the Ketoret from a piece of parchment upon which the text of the Ketoret is written in ink and in the same format as in a Sefer Torah. I was exposed to this custom for the first time when praying with Hacham Ovadia Yosef. When the time came for the recitation of the Ketoret, his assistant brought him a parchment from which the Hacham read the Ketoret. This custom is mentioned by Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1868), both in Kaf Ha'haim and in Ru'ah Haim. It appears also earlier, in Seder Ha'yom (Rav Moshe Ben Machir, Safed, 16 th century). These works emphasize the great value and benefit of observing this custom, how it brings wealth and prosperity – just as the Kohen who offered the Ketoret in the Bet Ha'mikdash was blessed with wealth. However, this custom is subject to a great deal of controversy. The majority view among the Rishonim – a position held by both the Rambam and the Rosh – forbids writing a portion of the Torah on parchment. This is based on the Gemara's discussion in Masechet Gittin (60a), where we read that Rabba explicitly forbade writing a portion of the Torah on parchment for a child to study from. By contrast, the Rif (Rav Yishak Alfasi, Morocco, 1013-1103) ruled that it is permissible to write a portion of the Torah on parchment. Maran (author of the Shulhan Aruch), in Bet Yosef, reconciles the Rif's lenient ruling with the Gemara's discussion in Masechet Gittin by noting that other Amoraim disagreed with Rabba's ruling. They allowed writing a small portion of Torah on parchment as this became necessary to ensure the continuity of Torah, that it will not be forgotten. However, despite Maran's defense of the Rif's position in Bet Yosef, in the Shulhan Aruch he follows the stringent opinion of the Rambam and the Rosh. And, generally speaking, when we find conflicting rulings in the Bet Yosef and Shulhan Aruch, it is assumed that the ruling in the Shulhan Aruch – Maran's later work – is the more authoritative position, and should be followed. It would thus seem that one may not write the section of the Ketoret on parchment, or hire a Sofer to do so. By contrast, numerous Ashkenazic Poskim ruled leniently. The Bayit Hadash (Rav Yoel Sirkis, Poland, 1561-1640) writes that the custom is to allow writing sections of the Torah on parchment, and this is the view also of the Shach (Rav Shabtai Ha'kohen, 1621-1662), the Taz (Rav David Segal, 1586-1667), and other Ashkenazic authorities. In modern times, this view was accepted by the Hazon Ish (Rav Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, 1878-1953). The famous "Lederman Shul" in Bnei-Brak, where Rav Chaim Kanievsky (1928-2022) would pray, features on the wall a large piece of parchment with the Ketoret section, following the lenient ruling of the Hazon Ish. Accordingly, Hacham Ovadia ruled that if a Sepharadi wishes to observe this custom, he must purchase the parchment specifically from an Ashkenazic Sofer, as preparing such a parchment is allowed by Ashkenazic Poskim, but forbidden for Sepharadim because of the Shulhan Aruch's stringent ruling. A number of Sephardic Poskim disagreed with Hacham Ovadia on this point. Most notably, Rav Moshe Levi (1961-2000), in his Tefila Le'Moshe, writes that the Shulhan Aruch forbids writing a small portion of the Torah on parchment only because this is disrespectful to the Torah. However, writing the entire section of the Ketoret, which includes the Gemara's discussion elucidating the Biblical text, is not in any way disrespectful, and is thus permissible even according to the Shulhan Aruch. Others note the practice among Kabbalists to pray from texts written on parchment that included passages from the Torah – thus demonstrating that the Shulhan Aruch's stringent ruling was not accepted. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, the custom to recite the Ketoret from a text written on parchment appears already in Seder Ha'yom – a work by a contemporary of Maran. Some have pointed to this source as further evidence that the Shulhan Aruch's stringent ruling was not necessarily accepted. Regardless, in light of Hacham Ovadia's ruling, it is proper for a Sepharadi who wishes to observe this custom to purchase the parchment from an Ashkenazic Sofer. If, however, a Sephardic Sofer prepared such a parchment, it may be used.

Hebrejom 10,32-39 32 Rozpamätajte sa na tie prvé dni, v ktorých ste boli osvietení a prekonali ste veľký boj v utrpeniach. 33 Boli ste vystavení verejnému hanobeniu a sužovaniu, inokedy ste boli spoločníkmi tých, ktorých stihlo to isté. 34 Veď ste trpeli spolu s väzňami a s radosťou ste znášali, keď vás obrali o majetok, lebo ste vedeli, že máte lepší a trvalejší majetok. 35 Preto nestrácajte dôveru, lebo bude bohato odmenená. 36 Potrebujete vytrvať, aby ste plnením Božej vôle dosiahli prisľúbenie. 37 Veď už len celkom krátky čas a príde ten, čo má prísť, nebude meškať. 38 Avšak môj spravodlivý z viery bude žiť, ale kto odpadne, v tom nebude mať moja duša zaľúbenie. 39 My však nie sme tí, ktorí ustupujú k záhube, ale ľudia viery k zachovaniu duše. K víťazstvu nad protivenstvami vedie vytrvalosť vo viere. Tlak na vieru má rôzne podoby. V našom európskom priestore nám nehrozí väzenie, strata majetku, či mučenie. Zdá sa, že náš život viery je pod prefíkanejším náporom útokov konzumného života. Investuje sa do tela a duch žobre pred kostolom, či nákupným centrom. Väzením a prenasledovaním sa v našom priestore javí pohodlie, užívanie si, dovoľovanie, či hovenie si telu. Takéto sústredenie sa na seba spôsobuje nezáujem o blížneho, o spoločenstvo. Osobné záujmy sú kritériom a určujú vzťah k Bohu i vzťah k spoločenstvu. Praktizujúca viera sa scvrkla na to, čo a kedy sa mi chce a čo a kedy mi vyhovuje. To nie je „vydávanie seba do opravdivej služby Bohu“. Je to na hony vzdialené obeti! Neochota postaviť sa voči tomuto „prenasledovaniu konzumom“ spôsobuje ústup života vo viere. Dôvodom ústupu je strata vytrvalosti. Oslabuje to jednotlivcov, a tým aj spoločenstvá. Pre život viery je zničujúce, ak si zakrývame oči pred tlakom protivenstiev na našu vieru. Biblia totiž zámerne na tento tlak upozorňuje, odkrýva ho a vyzýva k vytrvalosti. Lebo iba vytrvalosť vo viere prináša odmenu. Modlitba: Nebeský Otče, prosíme Ťa, odpusť nám, že výhody a ponuky tejto časnosti nás oslepujú do takej miery, že nevidíme hodnotu pravej obete vo viere, ktorej podstatou je naša vďačnosť za obeť Tvojho Syna, Pána Ježiša Krista! Hebrejom 10,1-18 1 Zákon je len tieňom budúcich dobier, a nie vlastným obrazom vecí, preto nikdy nemôže tými istými obetami, prinášanými ustavične každý rok, urobiť dokonalými tých, čo prichádzajú. 2 Vari by ich neprestali prinášať, keby tí, čo konajú bohoslužbu, boli raz navždy očistení a necítili by už vo svedomí, že majú hriechy? 3 Ale práve nimi sa z roka na rok pripomínajú hriechy. 4 Je predsa nemožné, aby krv býkov a capov odstraňovala hriechy. 5 A preto keď Kristus prichádza na svet, hovorí: Obety ani dary si neželáš, ale dal si mi telo. 6 Spaľované obety ani obety za hriech sa ti nepáčili. 7 Vtedy som povedal: Hľa, prichádzam, vo zvitku knihy je o mne napísané, aby som plnil tvoju vôľu, Bože. 8 Najprv hovorí: Obety ani dary, ani spaľované obety, ani obety za hriech si nechcel, ani sa ti nepáčili — a tie sa predsa prinášajú podľa Zákona. 9 Vtedy povedal: Hľa, prichádzam, aby som plnil tvoju vôľu. Ruší prvé, aby ustanovil druhé. 10 V tejto vôli sme raz navždy posvätení obetou tela Ježiša Krista. 11 Každý kňaz stojí a koná denne bohoslužbu a veľa ráz prináša tie isté obety, ktoré nikdy nemôžu odstrániť hriechy. 12 No Kristus priniesol jednu obetu za hriechy a navždy zasadol po pravici Boha. 13 Odvtedy čaká, kým mu nebudú jeho nepriatelia položení ako podnožka pod nohy. 14 Jednou obetou totiž navždy zdokonalil tých, čo sa posväcujú. 15 Dosvedčuje nám to i Duch Svätý, keď hovorí: 16 Toto je zmluva, ktorú s nimi uzavriem po tých dňoch, hovorí Pán: Svoje zákony vložím do ich sŕdc a vpíšem im ich do mysle; 17 a na ich hriechy a ich neprávosti si už viac nespomeniem. 18 Kde sú však hriechy odpustené, tam už vôbec netreba obety za hriech. Zvyk je železná košeľa. Nie je ľahké zmeniť zaužívané spôsoby, nech sa už týkajú akejkoľvek oblasti nášho života. Ešte náročnejšie je to vtedy, ak sa zo zvyku stane tradícia. Vtedy sa odvolávame na históriu, odkaz predkov, dedičstvo, ktoré nemôžeme opustiť. Prví kresťania, ktorí konvertovali zo židovstva, to mali omnoho ťažšie a stáli pred jedinečnou, historicky neopakovateľnou výzvou: Potrebovali zmeniť vzťah k Mojžišovmu zákonu s jeho systémom každodenných obetí. Zákonu, ktorý mal jasne vymedzené hranice, kde bolo jasné, čo sa od koho očakáva. Pavol však vo svojich listoch píše, že zákon lásky je viac, ako zákon obetí, predpisov a zákazov. Autor Listu Židom vysvetľuje, že najvyšší prejav lásky – obetovanie Božieho Syna – nahrádza ostatné obete a tie už nie sú potrebné. Kňazi prinášali každý deň obete v chráme, tie však nemohli zahladiť hriechy. Boží Syn však priniesol najvyššiu a jedinečnú obeť, keď obetoval Seba samého a touto obeťou zahladil naše hriechy. A tam, kde sú hriechy odpustené, nie sú ďalšie obete potrebné. Namiesto zákona obetí prináša vzkriesený Kristus Nový zákon – ten, ktorý je vložený do sŕdc. Dnes neriešime Mojžišov zákon, ale aj my si musíme dať pozor, aby sme obeť Pána Ježiša, ktorá platila a platí aj pre nás, nenahrádzali našimi zákonmi, či tradíciou a z nich vyplývajúcimi zásluhami. Potrebujeme Krista. Modlitba: Bože, ďakujem Ti za Pána Ježiša, ktorý naplnil, a tým nahradil rôzne zákony! Odpusť, že sa pridŕžam rôznych ľudských výmyslov! Veď ma Svojím Duchom, nech žijem tak, ako je potrebné žiť! Amen. 2026-04-17 | UPDATES #175 | The economic forum where Russia's own political and economic scientists said the quiet part out loud. It's not good news for Putin. Last week, something extraordinary happened in Moscow. In a conference centre in the middle of the capital, at an event the authorities have tolerated for a decade — the Moscow Economic Forum. Tolerated why? Because the regime needs some feedback mechanisms to help shape policy, needs a way to monitor the dissent from its policy course from the professional classes (not political dissenters, these are not tolerated), and because they know these people will never openly turn on the regime. But something has changed. The sense of doom, angst and despair has grown, and the frustration with Putin's choices on the economy, on funding the war, are bubbling to the surface. The Elites are distancing themselves from Putin's policies and starting to peel away from him as a figure – but don't expect that to translate into a political revolution.
