In this solo episode, Lisa explores the clinical differences between PMS and PMDD and breaks down a recent study that tested mood, cognition, and food intake across the menstrual cycle. She highlights major limitations in the study's hormonal testing methods and challenges the psychiatric framing of PMDD as a purely serotonin-based disorder. If you work with clients experiencing debilitating premenstrual symptoms, this episode will help you contextualize mood shifts through a cycle-aware, practitioner-informed lens. Tonight's episode connects the cultural noise to kitchen-table reality. Then we dig into Marjorie Taylor Greene & Thomas Massie, where they're aligned, where they clash, and why it matters for real-world policy. From there, we pull the curtain on health-insurance corruption, premiums, billing games, denials, and how the system keeps middle class families paying more while others get discounts or even free. I also announce my new Substack which started because of folks losing access to EBT junk foods: practical swaps, simple pantry builds, and budget-friendly recipes that keep you fed without ultra-processed filler. We also talk “beggars on TikTok”, the ethics, the grift, and spotting red flags, before closing with the big question: Are there truly no jobs and prices are impossible, or are we also complaining more? We separate hard numbers from vibes and talk about what we can control at home.

In this episode, Wil chats with longtime friend and restaurateur Drew Moore of Carrboro, NC. Drew shares updates on his ventures, including Venable Bistro, B-Side Lounge, Auto Strada Pizza & Panini, Auto Strada Gelato & Coffee, and the upcoming House of Gatewood Chop House in Hillsborough. He explains how a 2022 trip to France and Italy inspired Auto Strada, modeled after Italian “auto grills,” offering high-quality paninis, pizza with imported Italian flour, and real ingredients at approachable prices. They discuss the challenges of running restaurants, including supply chain issues (especially in beef), workforce recovery post-COVID, rising tuition and its impact on staffing, and educating consumers on healthier food choices. Drew emphasizes values-driven business practices, maintaining ingredient integrity, and making dining experiences approachable while elevating quality, all while balancing the very real, unglamorous daily demands of restaurant ownership.Takeaways: Inspiration from Italy: Auto Strada was inspired by Italian highway “auto grills,” which offer fresh, high-quality paninis, coffee, and gelato, something Drew wanted to bring to North Carolina. Ingredient Integrity: Auto Strada uses imported Italian double-zero flour (non-GMO and glyphosate-free), San Marzano tomatoes, and high-quality Wisconsin cheeses, making their pizza more digestible and flavorful. Educating Consumers: Many customers already recognize the health benefits of authentic ingredients, and Drew uses menu descriptions and conversations to further educate them. Economic Realities: While higher-quality ingredients cost more, Drew notes that dough remains inexpensive compared to cheese and proteins, making pricing manageable for customers. Beef Supply Challenges: The beef market is at its lowest production since the 1940s, making sourcing for the chop house complex; Drew is exploring local farms and co-ops for ethical, high-quality beef. Workforce Recovery: Post-COVID staffing remains challenging, though 2024 has shown improvement. University towns have a unique labor cycle, but graduate school enrollment spikes have slowed industry recovery. Consumer Shifts: Customers are increasingly health-conscious, moving away from processed fast food toward real, nutrient-dense options—a shift that supports Drew's model. Rising Tuition & Labor Market: Drew and Wil discuss the high cost of higher education, diminishing ROI for some degrees, and how AI may replace entry-level jobs, influencing the restaurant labor pool. The Unseen Side of Ownership: Drew highlights the unglamorous reality of restaurant ownership, fixing toilets, handling equipment breakdowns, and responding to emergencies are all part of the job.

In this podcast, Lisa meets with Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner and Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Manya Ronay. Together they discuss a comprehensive approach to nutrition that integrates balanced dietary practices with emotional well-being. They address emotional eating, stress management, and the use of Internal Family Systems to balance dietary choices.Topics Include:Intuitive EatingFood Industry IFS FrameworkEmotional EatingIntentional Weight Loss Strategies[:35] Lisa encourages listeners to sign up for the final group coaching cohort starting in September and the Reclaiming Peace With Food Retreat at the Omega Institute from September 7-12, 2025.[10:22] Manya introduces herself as a certified health educator, nutrition specialist, and practitioner trained in internal family systems, underscoring a commitment to nuanced health and eating narratives. Lisa encourages listeners to listen to the previous podcast episode with Manya. Lisa and Manya discuss nutritional science and its diverse expert opinions, political influences, and constant evolution. [15:14] Lisa discusses how her approach to food intake is like managing a financial budget, where understanding caloric surplus and deficit plays a key role. She explains how this method allows her to be aware of the calories in food without succumbing to judgment or rigidity, allowing for informed choices to maintain weight balance. [22:00] Manya expresses caution about the potential pitfalls of anti-diet and intuitive eating messages, how they gaslight by promoting absolute freedom from food monitoring. Lisa and Manya discuss the value of mindful eating, how balance is necessary to avoid counterproductive outcomes. [28:25] Manya discusses Kevin Hall's experiment that showed that ultra-processed meals led to higher calorie consumption, while real foods increased satiety and reduced caloric intake, resulting in weight loss. Lisa discusses how her approach to maintaining her weight loss is eating for volume and choosing high-nutrient, low-calorie foods over calorie-dense, low-volume options.[49:30] Lisa and Manya discuss how her living in an environment of high stress has led to her using food to gain a sense of comfort and safety. They discuss how Manya should shift to managing stress and embracing embodied safety will help her with her intentional weight loss without a diet mentality. Manya talks about how the IFS framework is used to balance contrasting inner parts: firefighters, representing the urge to eat for comfort, and managers, which impose boundaries. Lisa and Manya explain how this integration supports healthy eating decisions while honoring the positive intention of every inner part.[1:18:56] Lisa and Manya wrap up the episode by discussing how listeners can learn more about Manya and connect at: Website | Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn. *The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC.Purchase the OOTC book of 50 Journal PromptsLeave Questions and Feedback for Lisa via OOTC Pod Feedback Form Email Lisa: lisa@lisaschlosberg.comOut of the Cave Merch - For 10% off use code SCHLOS10Lisa's SocialsInstagram Facebook YouTubeReclaiming Peace With Food Retreat at the Omega Institute - September 7-12, 2025

On this episode of Stinchfield, Grant is joined by Celebrity Chef Andrew Gruel. The two pull back the curtain on the meat industry and expose the ugly truth: it’s no longer run by the hardworking American ranchers and local farmers—it’s been hijacked by massive multinational food conglomerates. These corporate giants aren’t just in it for profit—they’re manipulating how meat is raised, processed, and marketed, all while cutting corners on quality and jeopardizing our health. Grant breaks down how Big Food floods the market with ultra-processed, chemically-laced meat products disguised as "natural"—robbing us of the nutritional power that real meat used to deliver. Instead of supporting the ranchers who raise cattle the right way, the system props up factory farms, synthetic feedlots, and corporate meatpacking plants that treat animals and consumers like numbers. This isn’t just about food—it’s about control. And it’s time we fight back.
In this episode, I share the remarkable birth journey of Kelsey, a mother of three from Wisconsin, USA, who moved from fear and medical trauma to deep empowerment with a healing home birth after two caesareans (HBA2C).Baby #1 saw Kelsey induced at 37 weeks for suspected pre-eclampsia. Her regular doctor was away, and with a male provider stepping in, she felt overwhelmed and anxious. Not realising she had the right to say no, she was swept into a domino effect of interventions that led to her first C-section. At her six-week check-up, she was told her pelvis was “too small” and that vaginal birth would never be an option.Baby #2 was a different experience—Kelsey worked with midwives in a hospital who respected her choices and supported her VBAC plan. She declined most testing and felt truly seen. After four days of prodromal labour and 35 hours in total (with four of those hours pushing), she was emotionally and physically spent and opted for a second caesarean. Despite the outcome, the birth was peaceful and affirming. She watched her son being born, held him immediately in the operating room, and was encouraged by her doctor to try for a VBAC again in the future.Baby #3 was a surprise, and initially, Kelsey assumed she'd opt for another caesarean. But the years between babies were filled with education and empowerment. She met inspiring women, learned more about birth physiology, and found support from a community who believed in her. She hired a trusted doula and connected with a midwife willing to support her HBA2C at home.Throughout her pregnancy, Kelsey focused on calming her nervous system and nurturing her body with consistent body work—chiropractic care, regular massages, and acupuncture. She immersed herself in birth education, including Real Food for Pregnancy by Lily Nichols and Dr Berg's YouTube channel for wellness tips. When labour began at 39 weeks and 4 days, she laboured instinctively at home. Within 4.5 hours, Kelsey gave birth on her bedroom floor, with her eldest son watching his sister's head crown. Her daughter was born into peace—wide-eyed and calm. The moment was surreal. She had done it. Kelsey had birthed on her own terms.Being at home was the game-changer. She finally experienced birth in the way her body was designed for—supported, and sacred.Enjoy this podcast episode!
