Today's guest is Sarah Black, a longtime association content creator and strategist who lives in New Jersey. Over the past 15 years, Sarah has honed a career focused on strategic content and publishing innovation. In January 2022, she became the vice president of content and communications for the American Society of Plant Biologists, where she focuses on community engagement, publishing operations, and data and metrics analysis in content development. Before that, she worked at an association management company, as director of content and creative. There, over about nine years, she worked with more than 20 associations to innovate their content game, strengthen their publications and drive strategic messaging. I spoke with Sarah about how she thinks about the connection of content and membership and, more specifically, how an association's content plays an integral part in their membership strategy and goals. Topics covered: Switching careers from content creation to publishing operations and strategy. Associations that have an entrepreneurial mindset and what that means. How content serves as both a member recruitment tool and member retention tool. Giving away a lot of content means you're focused on member recruitment and engagement, but it can challenging for retention. Locking down content—behind a paywall, for example—is more focused on member retention, but it makes it harder for potential members to get to know you, to want to join your association. Providing content to potential members through a “free membership” tier. Figuring out how to operationalize a successful new program among all the demands on staff time—and investing in those resources. Creating a committee of members that brainstorms an annual editorial/content calendar—and then brings in the content as a way of building their network. We talk about motherhood a lot on this show. It’s probably second only to running itself, and for good reason. Since starting this podcast, our fearless host, Tina Muir, has been pregnant twice, and given birth to her beautiful daughter Bailey. Not only that, but Tina first stepped away from professional running to get healthy and start a family. Here we talk about what it’s like to be a mother and to be a runner. From professionals like Alysia Montano who competed professionally while pregnant (once when eight months pregnant!), to discussing how quickly to get back into running after pregnancy, to brands that support mothers, we love to talk about running and motherhood. Today we’re welcoming back another mother-to-be, Sarah Crouch. Sarah is a familiar voice for those longtime listeners. She is an incredibly fast runner, who has qualified for the US Olympic qualifiers three separate times. She is also a running coach, a birth doula, an entrepreneur, and has a knack for interviewing the interviewer, often getting the best out of Tina. For those that don’t know Sarah well yet, you will get your chance as she will be a guest host on the Running for Real podcast for four episodes, as Tina welcomes her second child into the world. Sarah is a natural interviewer and will be speaking with four people she knows during her substitution. Today Tina spoke with Sarah, discussing Sarah’s journey over the last year, from running her best times in her life, to fracturing her femur, to deciding to start a family. Listen along and get to know our new host! Just Go for It Last time Sarah was on the show, she had just hit her first PR in four years of running. It was a tough four years, but worth it. Sarah was learning and relearning the reasons you work hard to accomplish a goal, and understanding that the doing has to outweigh the end results for you to be happy. After finishing the Chicago Marathon in 2018, she took three days off and started intense training for the next race. In hindsight, she would have decided to take a longer recovery period. Sometimes the best training you can do is to not train at all. The body needs to recovery before it can perform at its peak. Sarah went on, and in April 2019 she ran the Boston Marathon. Prior to the race, she found out that she had a stress reaction near her knee at the end of her femur. Deciding to run the Boston Marathon still wasn’t a simple one. She was in great shape otherwise, running some of the best times ever, and if she did well in this race, she would qualify for the 2020 Olympic trials before the competition peaked in the fall. She also had sponsorships to think about, missing out on a paycheck if she didn’t run or didn’t finish. Running Boston would be a risk, and in the end, one Sarah would take. During the race, Sarah’s femur fractured. She finished the race well behind her goals and her projected finish position and time. Going into the race, she knew that if it fractured, it would mean six months of recovery, still, she stands by her decision. “I will always be a risk taker,” says Sarah. She emphasizes that she wasn’t advocating that when you are sick, you should go out and play, but for her she was doing her job and doing her best to overcome a challenge. The risk-reward was worth it, and 100 times out of 100, she said she would do it again. In the end, people will have opinions about what you decide to do. Some will always be supportive, some never will. The best thing to do is be confident in yourself and accepting of the consequences, good or bad. We know that we can’t please everyone, so do your best to be happy with your own decisions regardless. Sarah Crouch We are over the moon about having Sarah as a guest host on the show. She will no doubt bring a smile to your face as you listen to her for four episodes this summer. See you then! Today, we are celebrating our return from spending time with our children for the summer and so much has happened since we were last with you in real-time! So, in this show, we are going to recap some of our topics from our previous episodes, and also catch you up on our summers! We’re also going to be sharing some of the exciting things we have in store for you this fall. So, sit back, relax and join us for this conversation so we can catch up! Show Highlights: There are vast discrepancies in state education standards for teaching about slavery. We discussed this in episode 18 as it relates to who controls history. Our societal structures have been impacted by slavery, whether schools want to teach about it or not. Texas now teaches more than 5 million students that the Civil War wasn’t just about slavery, but rather it was more about economics and sectionalism. It doesn’t make sense that social studies is required for all students, but it doesn’t have the same national standards for what is taught as math and science do. Kids in the US learn about slavery differently depending on where they grow up. Most schools begin talking about African Americans in US history at the point that they are already slaves. When you begin at the point that someone is already dehumanized, you really never see them through a different lens. In order to see them as human beings, you have to start the journey before they were dehumanized. As a country, we still struggle with issues such as kneeling athletes, criminal justice reform, birthright citizenship, and Confederate statutes because we haven’t been taught the context of how those things tie directly into slavery. Plantation tours have taken on the task of educating the public about slavery, but the public is pushing back and saying they don’t want to have to see the impact of slavery included in the plantation tours. We don’t need to take slavery personally and get offended that it is an ugly part of our history. There are some books that you can use to help teach your children about equality. We’ve linked to the ones we recommend below. In Ep 11 and 12, we shared the real history of the KKK. Those shows are definitely worth listening to if you haven’t had a chance to catch those yet. It took Paypal six days to suspend an account raising money for a branch of the KKK. Even after it was flagged by an anti-bigotry campaigner, it still took almost a week for Paypal to take action. Your right to freedom of speech as laid out in the US Constitution ends when it infringes on others. Private companies, like Facebook, Paypal, Instagram, etc. have terms and conditions for the use of their platforms, but they can’t always catch everything that’s inappropriate. Remember the discussion we had about Stapleton, CO wanting change their name because even though Stapleton was a former Mayor of the town, he was also a KKK member, and used that fact to help him get elected. The town voted overwhelmingly (65% to 35%) NOT to change the name. Our first listener suggested guest, Caster Semenya, has lost her appeal to participate in her sport without taking drugs to alter her body’s natural hormonal state. You can learn more about her story by listening to episode 22. We had an episode about the citizenship question possibly being added to the census, and while that did not happen, we now have the Trump administration making it more difficult to obtain birthright citizenship. It’s been estimated that the changes to the birthright citizenship rule would affect only about 100 people annually, but for such a small impact why go down this slippery slope? We talked about the separation of migrant children at the border, and while that issue hasn’t completely resolved, the administration is now ending protection for migrant children getting lifesaving medical treatment in the US. It’s hard to understand how we can send sick children back to their home country and deny them medical treatment, knowing that decision will be a death sentence for them. It’s really heartbreaking. Find out our individual lessons learned and takeaways from spending this summer with our children. This includes the impact of visiting Hiroshima and the kid’s reaction to it and how taking kids to countries where they didn’t speak the language impacted them. This Fall, we have so many exciting plans for the show! You’ll have to listen to get a sneak peek! Full Recovery from Eating Disorders Sarah Canney is a believer of full recoveries—recoveries that give you complete freedom. When she was diagnosed with anorexia and then later bulimia, her belief that she could be free from either gave her the strength to battle for nine challenging years. “I did not believe I was born for an eating-disorder life,” says Sarah, “That’s where the belief for complete recovery came out of.” She says that claiming recovery is part of the recovery process. Knowing that you are working toward that final step of declaring your full recovery is powerful. And once you do, that declaration gives you strength as well. Today Sarah leads running retreats for women while raising three kids and blogging about running, motherhood, and life challenges. Her mantra is to “Embrace the Hill.” Keep reading to see how she has done just that. Group Therapy Isn’t for Everyone Programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have done wonders for people struggling to overcome addictions. Building self-awareness, finding support, and developing communication skills can all help to overcome eating disorders. When we see someone else going through something we are, it helps us internalize and understand ourselves better. Receiving and giving support strengthens us. Be that as it may, everyone has a unique path. While the support of friends and family and the expertise of a professional therapist is crucial, finding the right professional and group of loved ones can take work. Do not give up if the first therapist doesn’t seem to work for you. Look for someone that has the same goals and beliefs as you. For Sarah, having a good therapist was crucial, but group therapy did not help. “When I was in group therapy, it was so easy to fall into the comparison trap” she says, “I felt like it dampened the flame of self-belief.” Seeing people continue to struggle after decades didn’t lift her spirits. If you or a loved one has an eating disorder, remember that each person is unique. While we can’t navigate this world alone, surrounding ourselves with the right people is just as important as having people there for us. Your Overarching Path Whether it’s a challenging eating disorder, a running career, or raising a family, occasionally stepping back to see the big picture can keep us moving forward. One great way to visualize your overall journey is to keep a journal. When you are feeling down you can look back a month or a year to see how far you’ve come. Write down more than just your day-to-day activities and record your feelings and thoughts of the day to create a more meaningful memory. Every journey to success has small failures. While we may only see a positively curated world on social media platforms, between every flawless photo there are dozens of imperfect moments. It’s great to focus on the positives, but also be willing to share real life experiences and know that others are going through similar things. Sarah’s Social Media Rules Sarah has two simple rules when it comes to following others on social media. First, follow joy and positivity. This doesn’t mean you should only follow those that put on airs of perfection. In fact, quite the opposite. Follow people that share real life events, whether easy or hard, in a positive light. Second, if Sarah begins to compare herself to others, she changes her social media habits. Sometimes this means unfollowing someone and other times it just means taking a break from social media. Social media fast can be extremely healthy, and you don’t need to announce it to the world to do it. Big Goals AND Family Life Overcoming an eating disorder, leading others, running competitively and raising three kids takes careful prioritization. “I like to think of it not so much as a balance but as an ebb and flow,” says Sarah. “Sometimes my running and personal goals are a higher priority and sometimes I’m just all in focused on my family.” She tells listeners to give yourself grace. Be flexible and don’t work on perfectly balancing everything you are doing, rather give things priority when they need it. What are your takeaways from this podcast? Will you take time to see the big picture in your journey or maybe try following more positivity on social media? Find something that applies to you and give it a shot. Give yourself grace and embrace the hill. Resources: Sarah’s Instagram Sarah’s Twitter Sarah’s Facebook Sarah’s Website Rise.Run.Retreat. Dollar Shave Club was founded by Michael Dubin 5 years ago, in business in online razors. They got so succesful, because of the humor and storytelling in the video's used for their branding. The engaging and entertaining content over the next 4 years resulted in Unilever buying the company for 1 Billion dollars! Squatty Potty used video with storytelling humor. Resulted in 400% in retail sales and 600% in online sales. Russell Brunson's epiphany bridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKML2GyjuRQ Neuro Linguistic Programming Sarah recommends these books to aspiring entrepreneurs that she currently reads: Will it Fly by Pat Flynn. The Amours of Lillie Langtry, play written by Joan Greening and produced by Lemon Squeeze Productions, this summer 2018 in Edinbrugh, The Fringe. The Days I knew, by Lillie Langtry - Her memoirs Never split the difference, by Chris Voss. Chris, a former FBI hostage negotiator, talks all about negotiations and influence. The interview: Sarah is the founder of Lemon Squeeze Productions, in the UK, and all-round in her speaking business: comedian, actress, play writer, copy writer, author, keynote speaker, speaking coach and employee engagement specialist. She helps leaders and professionals on their quest to becoming high impact communicators, especially during change and transformation, combining her business and coaching background with her comedy experience. Sarah is a qualified Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) practitioner, integrating a specific communication approach with personal development and psychotherapy. She hosts the podcast: The Speaking Club Podcast, in which she brings hacks, tips and inspiring interviews and stories on public speaking. I recommend it as a great source, and it is very entertaining. Sarah has been performing stand up comedy since 2003 all over the UK and in 2015 she took her first play 'Dearly Beloved' on tour. In 2016, her performance and business background led to writing her first book Cracking Speech Mate! - 'How to use humour to make you an amazing speaker'. Followed by her book Straight to the Top - 'How to create and deliver a killer elevator pitch'. This year, 2018, she plans to come out with an online course. She loves being in front of a large audience and being in control of their attention. She's actually more comfortable in front of a large crowd than doing networking. But whatever the audience size and difference in energy, she treats her speeches like a conversation. She has always been interested in entertaining people, since a little child. There was a reward for her in making people smile. People give you their attention. Even in job interviews she tried to be cheeky. Not overstepping the line, knowing how far to go. Using humour, as well as self deprecation! Making fun of yourself. Nelson Mandela was a master at that, she says, and made people feel at ease. She wanted to go to drama school, but didn’t get in at the time. She then took a job in the corporate world in IT, starting off in the UK and then Germany. In Germany, she started to see the power of speaking, when she got elected at the age of 22 as a Works Council chair. Could she do the job at her age? She was asked to give a speech at the annual company event in front of the whole company. One of the things that worked was humour and stories. It was a powerful tool. Her speech removed any doubt whether she was fit for the job or not. When she moved back to UK, she switched to HR and Consulting in the corporate world. But she also started stand up comedy and writing. Recently, she channeled her expericiences into writing plays for theatre. Sarah left the corporate world in 2010 for the first time, as she wanted to make a career out of teaching people on how to use humor and do standup comedy. But she didn’t treat it as a business, and ended up going back to corporate. Then about a year ago, she decided she really wanted to make a success out of speaking. The calling was too strong; her love and passion to challenge, entertain and teach people, make them surprise themselves. Her business was still there, but now she would treat it as such, and it made all the difference! For her very first speeches, she used stories from an after-dinner speaking book. She integrated them in her talks and it worked! People resonated with the stories. It's a technique anyone can learn. That and bringing in your personality to stand out! There are different types of speakers: Keynote speaker – Paid speaker, doing a 45 minute talk at a conference, inspire and give action tips Platform speaker – Unpaid speaker, who's intention is to sell a product or service. If done right, it shouldn’t feel like a sales talk. MC (Master of Ceremonie) – Their job is to make the other speakers look good and to keep the event running smoothly. But speaking is also part of any job and role that needs to sell change, needs to engage or make an impact. If you want to grow (a business), you need to be a good storyteller. Her key clients are therefore corporate leaders and entrepreneurs. Humor and storytelling are important to communication and are the secret to business success. And with the advent of Ted Talks, you see how important stories have become in business. There are very good examples of gifted speakers out there now, which has raised the bar. You can't rely on your PowerPoint slides as protective armor, as all it does is undermine you, Sarah says. These days you cannot get to the top of a company and not be a good speaker. She gives an 2 examples of brands that grew enormously, because of storytelling and humour. Dollar Shave Club, started 5 years ago, sold to Unilever 1 billion dollars Squatty Potty grew 400% in retail sales and 600% in online sales. In general, the main steps to approach a talk are: Before looking at the content, the humour or storytelling of your speech, figure out what the goals of the talk are. Confirm your purpose and recognize what your presentation is going to ask your audience to do, say, think. When the problem you are solving and the solution you are offering is clear, try and 'summarize' your talk into one sentence. Brainstorm around that one sentence. What stories can you use to bring that one sentence accross? Look at the gaps are that would hinder the message, think about the uncomfortable parts of your presentation. For the end talk, try and focus on the 3 most important points and link a story around each of those. Use stories like an epiphany bridge and create hooks so that your audience can relate (think of the hero's journey with struggles and wins). Try to include humour for more engagement and entertainment. Include take-away's, as people want to have things to do after. Stand up comedy can be a huge help to become a better speaker, as well. She teaches those techniques to many business people. And at the end of her course her students have to perform 5 minute standup comedy that is self written. She also teaches to no be afraid to have an attitude and a clear opinion, because it can transform a speech. You might not connect to everyone. You don't want that either. But, you have to connect to your 'tribe'. When it comes to failure, something she learned from Neuro Linguistic Programming, is that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. And everyone in the world is worried about what other people think of them. Very few people are born without worry. She therefore tries to focus on her goals and not give up when things get tough. What makes someone successful in business and life are your will and drive, having a strong mindset. As a female speaker, she says that having worked in HR for so long, she’s seen women not applying for jobs if they are not ticking all the box. The same thing goes for speaking. In general, men are quicker to promote themselves. Women could be encouraged more, for sure. However, woman themselves should become less worried, be more light. Bring in humour to counteract. ENJOY THE INTERVIEW!

We’re starting 2018 with sort of a B-side to how we ended 2017. And the featured player here is Sarah McAllister, friend of the show and friend of mine actually. She’s the proprietor of Spirit Cell Tarot, where she offers, you guessed it, tarot readings. We talk a bit about that, a bit about Sarah’s trip to the last Burning Man event, and a bit about fish. We also chatted the day after I recorded my chat with our guest in episode 59, Gil Bates, so his work was top of mind as well, and that’s why I think of this one as a B-side of sorts. It’s definitely not less important in the traditional musical B-side sense. In fact, I think the rhythm and flow of this one gets us a lot closer to where we need to be in our personal journeys. At least that’s how I felt. But I’ll let you be the judge of that. Enjoy. RESOURCES Sarah’s website Sarah’s Instagram PATREON Please do take a moment to check out our Patreon campaign.
