What an epic failure by the NCAA. They dragged their feet for three years & STILL couldn't get enough proof of a scandal that needed to be addressed in a strong way. Neither side looks good in this. The silver lining is that at least this thing is over.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From recruiting restrictions to Sherrone Moore's extended suspension and Jim Harbaugh's 10-year show cause, Steve breaks down why this “hammer” is more like a feather. He calls out the NCAA's weak case, Michigan's mishandled defense, and the exoneration of Tim Smith and Chris Partridge. Plus, a fiery message to Bucknuts and Sparties stuck in their online cults.

On this episode of Plugged In with Chris Howard, we're taking the gloves off. First, the NCAA finally drops its ruling on Michigan's sign-stealing scandal — but is their stance on rules enforcement completely inconsistent? Then we get into the latest rankings battle: should Penn State or Texas really be sitting at No. 1?I'll break down why Bryce Underwood starting as a freshman at Michigan isn't as simple as “he's a five-star, let him play.” Plus, we've got to address the growing beef between Black sports announcers and African-American podcast hosts — from Ryan Clark vs. RG3 to Ryan Clark vs. Cam Newton — and why it's doing more harm than good. And finally, the sports gambling boom — from Oklahoma QB John Mateer's alleged betting scandal to the hypocrisy of leagues partnering with betting companies while punishing players for the same thing. Sports media and gambling ads have made betting unavoidable, but is this really the culture we want?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw), Mike Kravchenko (Watch on YouTube) and special guest, Don Van Natta Jr. (@DVNJr) to break down major stories including Jon Gruden's massive legal victory, Shohei Ohtani's involvement in a $240M real estate dispute, and Trump's executive order on college sports.Dan and the team first tackle Trump's "Saving College Sports" executive order, explaining what's actually in it versus the headlines. They cover the requirements for athletic departments based on revenue thresholds, the prohibition on third-party pay-for-play, and clarification that student-athletes aren't employees. Mike provides coverage of the shocking $240M real estate lawsuit involving Shohei Ohtani and his agent, centered on a luxury Hawaiian development deal. The case alleges tortious interference and unjust enrichment, with Ohtani potentially liable for his agent's actions despite being removed from direct negotiations. Dan connects this to the previous gambling controversy, suggesting this case could reveal more about Ohtani's actual involvement in business dealings than previously known. The episode also covers Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer's gambling controversy involving Venmo transactions labeled "sports gambling," examining why even jokes about NCAA violations can trigger investigations and the broader implications for student-athlete social media use.The Centerpiece: Don Van Natta Jr. joins for a discussion of the Nevada Supreme Court's 5-2 decision allowing Jon Gruden's case against Roger Goodell and the NFL to proceed in open court rather than arbitration. Don explains how this stems from the Dan Snyder investigation, the 650,000 emails obtained by Beth Wilkinson, and why only Gruden's 11 emails were leaked. The conversation explores the unconscionability ruling that could destroy the NFL's arbitration system, the potential for massive discovery including all those emails, and why Gruden has said he'll "burn the house down" to get the truth. and finally, what to watch for: Tarun previews the long-awaited NCAA decision on Michigan's sign-stealing scandal, while Mike provides Conduct Detrimental updates and recommends WWE Unreal on Netflix. Best of The Odd Couple
Things Discussed: What kind of offense should Michigan be? They're really built to be a 1990s team: strong TEs and FBs, run-blocking OL, big-armed quarterback who doesn't have to make super-hard reads. Chip Lindsey is a balance guy, not a screen guy. He comes in, looks at what you're doing, and builds a functional passing game around it. What does that look like this year? Their base two plays can be the stuff that worked for 1997 Michigan/Kirk Ferentz: Run off-tackle to one side and rollout flood passes with a side of Bryce running out the other way, and some screens and play-action deep shots to keep them honest. The Left Tackle conundrum. Seth says it's Evan Link until Andrew Babalola is ready, Sam says don't count on that, but it sounds like that would be a mistake—shades of the 2017 tackle problem when their best player at RT was Juwan Bushell-Beatty but he couldn't pass-protect, and instead of changing what they do around that they went with Nolan Ulizio to start the season. They don't look like a run-first team in practice, says Sam. Well, they're probably having to practice passing a lot. Remember you can have a 400% increase in passing from last year and still barely hit their 2021 level. Sometimes you gotta be you and let the cards fall where they may. News hits mid-show that Michigan will receive their NOI tomorrow. Expectations? Brian: removing wins etc. is off the table. There will be a show-cause for Harbaugh and Stalions because they refused to participate—Harbaugh probably has a lot of unread text messages. Guessing a two-game suspension (which games?) for Sherrone because all they really have on Michigan is the “deleted texts” that he apparently retrieved immediately from an image. The math here is Michigan didn't really do anything. They had a signs guy; everyone had signs guys. They scouted Georgia; Georgia wasn't on the schedule. The NCAA needs to make it look as big as possible but they really aren't working with much because Michigan didn't cheat, Michigan didn't harm anybody, and Michigan didn't cover it up. So the NCAA will absolutely maximize the infinitesimal infractions: completely ignore any time served from the Big Ten's overreaction in 2023, punish Harbaugh for not being present, yeet Stalions, fine Michigan because money isn't real, and penalize Sherrone for the appearance of hiding evidence. Ohio State will be mad because this was their show from the start and they didn't get the lynching they wanted, but even when the NCAA is doing their best to be as unjust towards Michigan as possible, but Michigan really didn't give them anything to work with.

In the mid-1990s, a bizarre sports scandal unfolded: a 30-year-old man named Ron Weaver was impersonating a college football player. Using a younger acquaintance's identity, Weaver played at a junior college and then successfully transferred to the University of Texas. Just before the Sugar Bowl, a newspaper exposed the fraud, revealing that "Ron McKelvey" was actually a much older man who had exhausted his NCAA eligibility years ago. His deception unraveled, leaving a shocked team behind and raising questions about identity, obsession, and how far one person would go to chase a dream. --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon!

What do you do after running 2:05 at the Boston Marathon? If you're Conner Mantz, you get back to work. The American half-marathon record holder (59:17 in Houston) and the fastest American ever on Boston's storied marathon course (2:05:08) is locked in on Chicago this fall.Earlier in 2024, Conner made his Olympic debut in Paris, where he delivered a gutsy, top-10 finish in brutal conditions—proving he belongs on the biggest stage in the sport. Coached by Ed Eyestone and training at altitude in Provo, Utah, Conner is building toward another breakthrough. His summer block has been quietly brutal: long progressive runs that close near race pace, back-to-back workouts with tight recovery windows, and high-volume consistency that only a few can handle. Before turning pro in late 2021, Conner was one of the most dominant collegiate runners of his generation. At BYU, he won back-to-back NCAA cross country individual titles and helped lead the Cougars to national team glory in 2019. That grit, that consistency, and that team-first mindset still drive him today. His resume speaks for itself: he's run 59:17 in the half marathon, 2:05:08 in the marathon (Boston 2025), 27:26 in the 10,000m on the road (Beach to Beacon 2025; Course Record), 13:11.48 in the 5,000m on the track, and 3:37.96 in the 1,500m on the track. This isn't just about chasing the edge of human performance. It's about building a career—not just off talent—but off intention, consistency, and belief. In today's conversation, Conner dives deep into his training and preparation for his American Record attempt at the Chicago Marathon on October 12th, 2025.
