After agreeing there isn't much new to talk about, your Blue Balls boys proceed to talk about it AT LENGTH, breaking down NYCFC's fumbled final third attacks, the return of Maxi Moralez, substitutions, turnovers, plays of beauty and plays of woe. Everyone’s been asking me for book recommendations for 2021, so here goes!(I’m not going to link them here or else this email might go to spam, just search them up on Amazon)1) The Price of Tomorrow - Jeff BoothBest book I read in 2020, hands down. Nearly prophetic in nature. Predicted everything that happened in 2020 and THEN SOME. Quick read, I read it in 3 hours and my mind has been obliterated since.2) The Future is Faster Than You Think - Peter H. DiamandisThose that understand technology will rule the rest of this century. This book was an eye opener in more ways than one. Also makes for extremely good dinner conversation material :)3) Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future - Ashlee VanceRead this on my honeymoon. LITERALLY couldn’t put it down. My wife made fun of me as I would walk from my beach chair to the bathroom holding my kindle, never even looking up.If you’ve been wondering why Tesla went up 700% in 2020, this is the book for you. (oh, and if you aren’t inspired by Elon’s savage work ethic by the end, I’m not sure you read the book)4) Zero to One - Peter ThielI’ve read this 10 times front to back. One of the most insightful and thought provoking business books ever written. Written by someone who has founded MULTIPLE Billion Dollar Companies. Enough said. 5) This Book Will Save You Time - Misir Mahmudov90 minute book. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought of it since reading it. Re-defines how you think about your most precious resource, time. 6) Hell Yeah or No - Derek Sivers Epic. Unlike anything else. Thought provoking. Memorable.I’m serious. Derek Sivers is some sort of book Savant. Recommend ANYTHING by him. This dude seriously thinks DIFFERENTLY.I’ve told his “Give 50% effort and get the same result” story 100 times by now. 7) Anything You Want - Derek SiversDid I mention this guy is incredible? Just read it. It’s one of the most practical and HELPFUL books ever written. Quick read too. 8) Essentialism - Greg McKeownRemember how I keep telling you guys that only 1% of your decisions matter? This book basically says that, but much smarter than I ever could. Read it. Soak in it. Can you bathe in a book? Idk, but you should try. 9) Bitcoin: Hard Money You Can't F*ck With: Why bitcoin will be the next global reserve currency - Jason A. WilliamsYes, that’s the title. Was shocked by how READABLE yet RIVETING the arguments in here are. Somehow Jason uses his unique “swagger” to convey complex economic topics and tie a bow on it in a way that ANYONE can understand and that will actually stick with you long after you’ve put it down. 10) Unscripted: MJ DeMarcoCan’t round out the top 10 without this one. Teaches you how to ditch the hamster wheel that society has you on, forever. Should be required reading for every human in the World. But I guess if that was the case, the “system” wouldn’t be around for much longer….————Honorable mentions because I love you guys. Some classics in here. Most are so epic the author doesn’t even need to be named, just search in Amazon. It’s the one with 20 million 5 star reviews haha.11) Think and Grow Rich12) The Magic of Thinking Big13) How to win friends and influence people. 14) The Obstacle is the Way15) Built to Sell16) Atomic Habits 17) The Millionaire Fast Lane - MJ DeMarco18) Purple Cow - Seth Godin If you enjoyed this, let me know in the comments, and forward this to anyone who likes to read.(so, maybe everyone in your contacts…)Thank you to all the authors who wrote these masterpieces. You’ve literally changed my life. Kalep.s. My wife wanted to mention that her top 2 are 1) VERITY by COLLEEN HOOVER and “if you like love stories more”2) HOPELESS by COLLEEN HOOVERApparently anything by Colleen Hoover is amazing. ^ Grab your 30 day free trial of “The Kale Letter”. Finding the Silver Lining in Challenging Times with JD Cargill Crises can strike at any time, and they're usually unexpected. Some of us bounce back and pivot quickly, but others need to make 180-degree turns in their lives. In today's episode, TV journalist and producer JD Cargill shares how the pandemic disrupted his career and how to find a silver lining amid adversity. He also explains how to work your way past the discouraging voice that pops in your head from time to time—your inner saboteur. If you're going through a rough patch and you want to learn how to uplift yourself, tune in to this episode! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how JD coped with the effects of the pandemic on his career and mental health. How you can fuel your purpose during tough times? Find out how JD feels radically loved by listening to the full episode! Resources ArcLight Stories by ArcLight Cinemas and Mid-Century Media Friendsome and Then Some!! podcast Grit Happens!! podcast Follow Modern Podcasting on Instagram! Follow JD on Instagram! Episode Highlights How JD Became a Television Journalist JD developed his love for films growing up when his mom took him to the cinemas on Friday nights. He wanted to act on this passion and create a career around it. After taking up journalism in college, JD moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. He took up acting classes when he wasn’t landing jobs for a while. Training made JD realize he wasn’t good at the craft. However, he still wanted to stay in the entertainment industry. Seeing Jules Asner on TV inspired him to become an entertainment reporter and producer. He got into a business where he can build relationships, talk about the things he loves, and use the skills that, for him, flow naturally. JD’s Career During a Health Crisis COVID-19 took away JD's career, which freed him up to do anything. JD initially had ideas of creating a mobile studio for podcasting, which didn't push through because of the current health crisis. Instead, JD built a podcast studio in the basement of his home in Pasadena. He and Ed, his engineer, already have three to four show ideas, including a podcast called Bachelor. On Fueling Your Purpose Amid the Pandemic If you’re going through a rough patch, what matters is how you pick yourself up. Like Rosie, JD believes in meditation and also allowing yourself to be a wreck. But you have to eventually get out of it by focusing on whatever brings you joy. Whenever JD’s “inner saboteur” pops up in his head, he convinces himself he can do it. He tells himself, ‘I know me. I trust myself. I will not let myself fail.’ The key is to find your primary motivator and use it to power through that voice in your head that tries to destroy you. Tantra Yoga comes with the belief that we are born with limitations. To expand beyond them, we must understand what to do next from a state of stillness. The Biggest Lesson Learned This Quarantine It’s okay to lose jobs, money, and other things as long as you keep a hold of yourself. JD learned to trust himself and believe everything will work out. He also learned not to overreact when receiving bad news. JD’s Anchor Point JD struggled with opioid dependency. Whatever your issues are, find a pathway out and try different things until you see what works for you. Accept your reality. You don’t have to escape it. Be yourself. On Freedom JD has never felt freer in his life than he does now. Modern Podcasting is the first project he has ever done entirely on his own. He considers this as his silver lining during the pandemic. For JD, there are times when you need to let the universe or whatever higher power you believe in forge your path. It takes work to get to know yourself and see where you’re going in life. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [09:52] “The thing that makes you an adult is the day that you realize that whatever you're going through, millions of other people are going through it too. So there is no reason to hold anything back.” [14:36] “If you don't take real action towards a dream or if you do and either thing doesn't deliver that dream in a timely manner, there's a lot of dreams. Let's find something that will satiate you.” [23:58] “I believe, like you, in meditation, and breathing, and getting as centered as possible, and giving myself permission to be just a wreck. I did that. And then I gave myself permission to get myself out of it.” [32:55] “It's okay to lose stuff, and money, and things. It's not okay to lose who you are, yourself, in the process, especially if you know yourself and you like yourself.” [39:16] “Once you accept that, ‘This is me; this is my life; this is my condition; this is the world. This is me. And it's okay. It is okay.’ you don't have to escape it. And if you don't have to escape something, you don't need the substances. You can just be yourself.” About JD JD Cargill is a producer, film expert, and most notably, a broadcast journalist with multiple awards under his belt. JD’s career in broadcast news started at KTLA in 2000 as a production assistant, eventually serving as a senior entertainment producer for News@Ten. In 2002, he became a Hollywood-based reporter for Rise TV on UK’s Channel 4 in London. Then, in 2004, he worked at CNN as an overseer of the film, television, and entertainment news beat. JD started Mid-Century Media (MCM) in March 2014, a full-service Hollywood production company. He partnered with ArcLight Cinemas, MCM produced ArcLight Stories, digital presentations that showcase the makings of select films and interviews with actors, directors, and other talents. JD is a podcast host of the Friendsome and Then Some!!, a show which talks about all things midlife. BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS AND ACROSS THE SEAS: OVER 50 YEARS OF ROMANTICIZING TRAVEL by Hal Davis To put one’s travel life into proper perspective can be like teetering on the edge of history. To have lived it, I was totally ensconced in parts of the events that became monumental worldwide. The history became real for me due to my employment with the United States Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee State Trooper, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and career Marine allowed me to be in some of the historical places. Additionally, the meeting of the foreign Heads of State, The Royals, and other famous people from many other countries was truly remarkable. Undeniably, my journey from the land to each of the coast in different continents were indeed a great adventure! Hal Davis is a distinguished US Marine (Ret.) with a career that spanned twenty-two years. In his heart, service is for a lifetime. He grew up in Knoxville Tennessee, and life back then was never easy. Deprived of all the good things that a childhood normally brings, he remained steadfast in reaching his goals. He became a Tennessee State Trooper, FBI Special Investigator, United States Secret Service Agent to two US presidents (Nixon and Ford), and a Marine and Naval Criminal Investigator. Hal is currently serving as a Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy. He had a fulfilling fifty-three year career, but more than that, Hal is a loving husband to Susan and a father-hero figure to Allison, who’s now their guardian angel in heaven. He is also the author of From an Outhouse to the White House, and Then Some. https://www.stratton-press.com/books/beyond-the-mountains-and-across-the-seas-over-50-years-of-romanticizing-travel/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/hdavis2.mp3
FROM AN OUTHOUSE TO THE WHITE HOUSE: AND THEN SOME by Hal Davis With over five decades of service to his country, Hal is certainly not a man to be easily detoured or dissuaded from his mission. This book is a real testament of how long-suffering, perseverance, loyalty, integrity, and patriotism. Hal’s wit and humor which he never outgrew even until today, allowed him to associate with highly recognized and well-established people. His life really began after he was kicked out by his father. He had a bitter childhood that continued well into his teens, but everything changed after he became a member of the United States Marine Corps. His success was not given to him on a silver platter, it was definitely a roller-coaster adventure. He lived, he laughed, he cried, he loved, he fell, and he rose yet again. From an Outhouse to the White House, and Then Some, will show you just how he did it. Hal Davis is a distinguished US Marine (Ret.) with a career that spanned twenty-two years. Victoria Johnson understands each of us goes through adversity and can choose to heal from it and, in fact, use it to help others heal. As a Spiritual Teacher, Author, Writing Coach, and Heal Your Life Trainer for Canada, Victoria has refused to take on a victim mindset and instead has turned her life experiences into powerful love lessons. Through her writing and training, Victoria acts as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone she meets they are lovable, worth loving, and don’t have to do anything to earn it. About the Guest: Life lessons have made me a champion of overcoming pain and adversity. Instead of becoming a victim, Victoria Johnson turned her life experiences into love lessons that she share with her readers. Her life started out with abandonment and subsequent adoption. Recognizing that everyone can relate to being abandoned at some point in their life, she dedicated her life to helping other overcome and to heal these feelings. She learned over the years that if these feelings of abandonment and rejection are left untreated and unresolved, they become the basis of how we make many of the choices in the blueprint of our life. It is her passion to help others weave a beautiful and happy life by learning and growing from reading about her life experiences and in turn, for her readers to then use what they have learned as a catalyst to make changes in their own lives. This is how her book “Do That & Then Some” was born. You will find her book very relatable as it covers issues that are important to all of us such as healing, prosperity, health, our inner child and relationships. She wants you to know that you are no longer alone. You don’t have to feel ashamed or anger from your own life experiences. “Do That & Then Some” will help you to heal, learn, grow and live the life you have always dreamed about and so rightly deserve. It’s all Judy Garland, all the time! This week, Stacie kicks us off with the mysterious and incredibly brief marriage between actress Renee Zellweger (who just won Best Actress for Judy) and country star Kenny Chesney. They tied the knot after knowing each other just five months, and when Renee filed to annul the marriage for “fraud” four months later, the media turned an ugly eye to Kenny. Then, Alicia has the heartbreaking story of Trashy Divorces All-Star Judy Garland, whose five marriages and four divorces were probably a predictable outcome of the horrifying ways she was mistreated as a child. We have so many images of step-moms. Angels, devils, and everything in between! My guest, Kathy Hammond, is the author of How to Kill Your Husband's Ex, Attorneys and Then Some: Ass Kickin' Advice for Stepmoms. You might relate! She says, "Books on step parenting hope to evoke a kumbaya feeling. That might work if everyone involved in the step family dynamic is mature, empathetic and certainly not narcissistic. In reality are very raw emotions of jealousy, anger, resentment and fear, experienced by ex-spouses and subsequent spouses and, as chief casualties, the kids."Being a stepmom is difficult. You step into a place where someone else's shoes are already filled, in most cases. You're the bonus mom. You also may be perceived as the unnecessary extra mom, too. Whoa! How to Kill Your Husband's Ex, Attorney, and Then Some! Strong words. I'm sure many stepmoms will relate. Do you? Are you in a new relationship where you're screaming (at least, in your head) "My husband's ex cannot let go! My husband's ex causes too many problems! My husband's ex won't let go!" Maybe your partner's ex is a #Hijackal. If you're dealing with a #Hijackal ex--a difficult, toxic, unrelenting, demanding ex--when you're the new stepmom, you're going to have a steep learning curve. There will be days! You'll wonder why you ever said yes to taking on someone's children. Will it strengthen your new marriage by working as a team, or will your new partner be overwhelmed by the stress? Maybe, you'll land somewhere in between. Listen today and shortcut the journey to success as a stepmom. Feel better about your stepmom role. Steve Gorman's natural sense of groove and knack for rhythmic hooks helped propel the Black Crowes to massive success. Over the course of a two hour conversation, Steve tells Joe about: growing up in Kentucky and Maryland; his love of Basketball; channeling obsessive-compulsive tendencies into rhythmic precision; his dysfunctional relationship with his former bandmates; the experience of writing a memoir; and the importance of family. Check out Steve's Book, Hard To Handle; and the new album by his band Trigger Hippy, Full Circle and Then Some.

Last Friday, Trigger Hippy released their sophomore record Full Circle and Then Some. This is a band that has sort been on quasi hiatus at least from the public for quite some time, and that record, five years in the making brings them back into the spotlight. The band, comprised of bassist Nick Govrick and Steve Gorman, now includes Ed Jurdi and Amber Woodhouse. They’ve had several other members in the band over the years including Audley Freed, Jackie Greene and Joan Osborne. Their music blends stuff we love like rock, soul, Americana and more, so we were delighted to hear they had a new record. Thank you to Patrick, as usual, for commissioning this episode! So this is the one where everything regarding Hearst turns around in my head. This episode is called "True Colors" for a reason, and Heart reveals his, and THEN SOME. I didn't think that I would hate anyone more than Cy but Hearst has not only replaced him as Most Hated Character, I actually feel sorry for Cy. And that is simply unacceptable. Also, there's this whole thing going on with Alma and I'm really worried about it. I also don't appreciate that she put so much work into her offer only to be bulldozed by an entitled man who wanted to put her in her place via sexual violence. It seems totally accurate, but I DON'T APPRECIATE IT. Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

ASHLEY CAMPBELL is a triple threat songwriter, singer and banjo virtuoso. Following in the footsteps of a famous parent is never an easy path, and Ashley, the daughter of music legend Glen Campbell, initially pursued dance and acting. But when Ashley was asked to learn banjo for a part in a play, a spark was lit and her calling was found. Soon Ashley was studying with banjo luminary Carl Jackson (her godfather and longtime member of Glen's band) and mastering her technique. Ashley co-wrote all thirteen songs on her debut album 'The Lonely One', chronicling a personal journey - by turns bold, reflective and brazenly funny - of a young woman grappling with grown up choices. LILLIE MAE has been singing and playing on stages across the country since she could stand on her own two feet. ‘Forever and Then Some’, her much anticipated Third Man Records debut, sees the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaving her own extraordinary experiences with the myriad strains of Americana to create a breathtaking song cycle of romance and struggle, solitude and adventure. Produced by multiple GRAMMY® Award-winner Jack White III at Third Man Studio in Nashville, the album affirms Lillie Mae as a remarkably gifted musical storyteller, a bright new star that’s been here all along. WoodSongs Kid: Kate Ward is a fifteen-year-old fiddler from Kuttawa, Kentucky. Kate is a staff fiddler at the Kentucky Opry and she has competed in numerous fiddle across the country.

Singer-songwriter/fiddler Lille Mae and her brother, Frank, played "Manzanita," "Loaner" and "These Days," at the Quad-City Times. The final two song were off of Lille Mae's full-length debut album, called "Forever and Then Some." When it was released last year by Jack White's label, Third Man Records, music critics quickly put Lille Mae on a bunch of those "Artists to Watch," lists. And I think everyone in the newsroom -- and the 10,000 people who watched the video on Facebook over the weekend -- could see why. Something lovely and special happened when Lille Mae started singing and when she turned the fiddle to play it like a guitar. They live in Nashville now, but they were born in Illinois, so Lille Mae and Frank say that, after this, they're going to go hang out with their father. Several members of their family were also due to show up at Lillie Mae's show at the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel. They left with more smiles and directions to a nearby record store. They love playing in Davenport, Lille Mae said. To them, it feels close to home.

Lillie Mae has yet to climb out of her mid-20s, but the singer/songwriter has already spent more than a decade fiddling her way through the honky tonks of Music City’s Lower Broadway and backing Jack White. Just a couple months ago, she stepped out on her own to drop her debut solo album “Forever and Then Some” on April 14. “What isn’t interesting about her?” Stacy Vee asked a Los Angeles Times reporter. Vee is director of festival talent for Goldenvoice, which organizes the Stagecoach Country Music Festival. “Seriously, the way she’s singing, the way she presents her art, I haven’t seen it performed like that. … It’s completely fresh, it sounds way older and way newer, masculine and feminine at the same time. It’s going to be a really fun project to watch develop.” Back in 2008, Lillie Mae fronted the four-piece string group Jypsi alongside two sisters and a brother as they released an album on Arista Nashville and then played South by Southwest, Stagecoach and Bonnaroo. After Jypsi broke up, Lillie Mae supported White’s solo project until she journeyed into White’s Third Man Records studio with few expectations. “There was no plan to make a whole album,” Lillie Mae told the Los Angeles Times. “He asked me to come in and record a few songs, and after we got done with three, he said, ‘You got any more?’ ” Indeed she did. The album ranges across 11 tracks, many of which feature backing instrumentals from her musical family members and interspersing more traditional country licks with rugged rock riffs born out of her time with White’s band. “I was spending time with hip-hop drummers, crazy psychedelic keyboardists, classical, unbelievable (players). If I didn't get that gig, I never would've met those people or been turned onto so much more music. It's just this huge, eclectic variety of musicians,” Lillie Mae told WXPN’s World Cafe. The idea of watching this movie again frightens me more than anything I saw during scary movie month. This week we’re talking about one of the worst movie sequels of all time, Grease 2. We lost Mike to illness this episode but we have a special guest joining us, our good friend, Roxy De Luca. This is the first musical we’ve done on It’s Been Done Before and boy was it terrible! We get horrible stand-ins for all of our favorite characters and songs from the original classic. I guess this is what we should expect from the writer of Airplane 2: The Sequel and the director of Cyndi Lauper: 12 Deadly Cyns...and Then Some. Why are the T-Birds so concerned about doing well in class and winning the talent show? Is Michael the most beautiful nerd in movie history? Will Frenchy go on to found the Maybelline Corporation? Are there any responsible adults or authority figures in this town? How are these “high school seniors” allowed to smoke, drink and drive motorcycles wherever they would like? How many other movies give the soundtrack top billing in the end credits? Well, at least Michelle Pfeiffer looked gorgeous. This one is a good episode because the movie was sooooo bad.

It has been a while since we had Assistant City Manager Chris Story on the podcast, and this week we rectify that situation. On the agenda is news that Spartanburg Community College recently opened their downtown campus and has already exceeded its expected enrollment with around 750 new students taking classes in their freshly renovated historic location. What does it mean to have hundreds of new college students in Downtown Spartanburg? How does that expand on Spartanburg's position as a "college town," with institutions of higher learning seeminly around every corner of our city? Along the way we talk about the groundswell of recent small business investment in the downtown area, with unique new businesses like Olive and Then Some opening their doors and winners of the Main Street Challenge getting their spaces ready to go. What does that new small business investment bring to our community, and how might it help set the table for further growth? Listen to the podcast as we try to sort it out.
