This final episode of Organize the Unorganized is devoted to key lessons of the CIO moment. All of the guests on this program were asked about this basic question, and we try to represent all of their answers on this episode. The negative lessons, points where guests were keen to note the differences between the 30s and the present moment, focused on the changed economic situation and the issue of labor law. The more positive lessons pertained to union democracy, overcoming divisions in the working class, mass organizing, raising expectations, and seizing the moment. Live from Los Angeles, it was Wednesday eve. Loved spending it with Television Academy Hall of Famer, Laraine Newman. I was a little down-and-out post-new Moderna vax, but thanks to Laraine, I swiftly forgot all about it. She took us through her early childhood, finding her place with the funny. From neighborhood street plays, and school theatre with classmate Paul Reubens, to becoming a founding member of The Groundlings with her sister, Tracy Newman, to Lorne Michaels and Lily Tomlin discovering her for a special which then led to Saturday Night Live. Arriving in New York to some trauma, the SNL experience, characters that transitioned, writers, castmates, running with Gilda, feeling left out with Garrett, drugs, American Hot Wax, Stardust Memories with Woody, a Beatle, the Stones, better drugs, 5 years later, always working, voicework becoming the thing. Motherhood and mazel, Celebrity Autobiography to her audible memoir, May You Live in Interesting Times, available here: https://bit.ly/48opI8M. I savored every moment. Whip-smart, brilliantly funny, and deeply insightful, I cherish Laraine's talents & her friendship. I adored spending this time in her good company. Brava! Tracy Newman came to comedy writing by being a founder of a Los Angeles improvisational organization called The Groundlings. It was located on the famous Melrose Avenue, and it was during the heyday in the 1960's for these kind of entertainment venues. The Groundlings, which still operates today, became a training ground where aspiring actors could learn how to create jokes and how to respond to a live audience when creating comedy. Many members of the group went on to have stellar careers like Tracy and her younger Sister, Lorraine, who became part of Saturday Night Live. Incredibly, Tracy's television career as a sitcom Writer began on the CHEERS program at the time when it was, and still is, one of the most popular programs for T. V. ever created. From there she continued joining with her partner John Stark, what is called the Writers' Rooms, with many of the most famous television sitcoms such as the Drew Carey Show and The Nanny. She won an Emmy with other Writers, the highest award in Television in the U. S., for the script for the ELLEN Show where Ellen announced to the world that she was a Lesbian. At the time, that was a risky and radical career decision for a popular entertainer. In this episode, Tracy takes us into the world of the typical Writers' Room of a sitcom comedy, a place she left years ago to return to songwriting and singing. She gives us an insight into the history of how television comedy was made and evolved. To hear her music, see her videos and purchase CDs, go to the website, www.tracynewman.com

Over a span of decades, Tracy Newman has used her creativity in folk song writing and singing, and in her pioneering work as a comedy writer for live performances and television audiences. The origins of much of the comedy we enjoy today in the United States, came from a blossoming of talent that arrived on the scene 50 years ago now. One of the places that became a hotbed of developing future comedic stars was a place called the GROUNDLINGS IMPROV THEATRE in Los Angeles, California, and Tracy was a founding member. It was there, like a farm team in sports, that future Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast members honed their talent and their performance styles in front of an audience. The likes of Melissa McCarthy, Will Farrell, Kristen Wiig, Phil Hartman and Lorraine Newman, to name a few, were plucked from the West Coast to arrive on the New York TV stage of SNL. Tracy Newman takes us down the path from her folksinging days, to her trail of television sitcom writing with her partner John Stark, for popular shows like, Cheers, The Drew Carey Show, and her Emmy Award for the Ellen episode where Ellen announces to the world that she is Gay. After leaving television writing she returned to song writing and has produced CDs with her band TRACY NEWMAN AND THE REINFORCEMENTS. She also has created CDs for kids through her company, RUN ALONG HOME. Incredible time talking to Jonathan Stark on Dystopia Tonight! Had the pleasure of seeing him perform improv at the Fanatic Salon when I first moved out to LA and was in awe then. We talk about his beginnings as an actor, and his trajectory from improv to writing with his partner Tracy Newman, writing “The Puppy” episode of Ellen where she came out to the world, creating According to Jim, the dying art of network comedy at the advent of streaming services, and the cult classic Fright Night! Enjoy!

Episode 60 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is actress, writer, comedian and voice artist Laraine Newman. An original SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast member, Laraine Newman grew up in Los Angeles with movie star neighbors, was witness to the 1960's music scene, saw the rise of comedy in the early 1970s, and studied mime in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Marceau.Already having older sister Tracy pursuing a career in entertainment, "do not go into show business,” was Newman's mother's advice to her. But, when she appeared on the TV show KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS at the age of 4 and got big laughs lying to host Art Linkletter, she knew something was up.While studying improvisation in the early 1970s with Gary Austin, she co-founded The Groundlings, the now-legendary Los Angeles–based improv and sketch-comedy troupe. Lorne Michaels, then a young producer, took along his friend Lily Tomlin one night and caught Newman's act and cast her for a spot on the 1975 Emmy Award winning THE LILY TOMLIN SPECIAL (Newman's television debut).Lorne would return months later to The Groundlings to recruit her for his new variety series for NBC, then titled NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT, where (at 23 years of age) she became one of the original cast members - known as The Not Ready for Prime Time Players - appearing on the show from its inception in 1975 through 1980.On, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Newman is best known for her roles as Connie Conehead, Valley girl Sherry, and Christie Christina, the ditzy co-host of E. Buzz Miller's (Dan Aykroyd) public-access television cable TV show. Newman also played a TV news reporter for WEEKEND UPDATE with anchor Chevy Chase (Season 1) and later Jane Curtin (Seasons 2 thru 5).As a member of the original cast of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Laraine Newman was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2017.On film she appeared in AMERICAN HOT WAX, WHOLLY MOSES!, PERFECT, Woody Allen's STARDUST MEMORIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and as Lawanda Dumore in PROBLEM CHILD 2. On television she was seen as Phoebe's step-mother on FRIENDS, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN, AMAZING STORIES, LOS ESPOOKYS, among other hit sitcoms. As a voice artist she can be heard on MONSTERS, INC., THE OBLONGS, DOC McSTUFFINS, AMERICAN DAD!, THE GRINCH, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, the DESPICABLE ME trilogy, MINIONS, INSIDE OUT, WALL-E, CARS, as well as countless others. Her acclaimed new Audible book MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES is not only a fascinating memoir of her growing up in Los Angeles along with her years at SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, but is also filled with incredible backstories and is a detailed snapshot of 1960s Los Angeles and 1970s New York City. Newman is also the mother of comedian, actress and writer Hannah Einbinder (of HBO Max's HACKS) and actress and writer Spike Einbinder (of HBO's LOS ESPOOKYS). Newman is also part of the Advisory Board of SF Sketchfest. THE RIPE REPORT returns on Episode 61. We went Live with multiple Emmy award winning writer/producer, Jay Kogen ~ The Simpsons, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm in The Middle, School of Rock, and what a fun ride it 'twas! Had a blast and learned so much about the business of show. Jay has fabulous stories of getting there, being there, and working to stay there. Great humility, huge talent, terrific suggestions. Tales of Tracey Ullman, The Simpsons, James L Brooks, writing for Homer, choosing between Frasier and Seinfeld and landed at The Single Guy. Say what? Back to Sophie's choice and choosing Frasier, and why... Brad Hall, Larry David, Mike Meyers, Garry Shandling, 3 act structure, film school, Jonathan Silverman, his comedy writing, Emmy-winning, one less than Jay, dad, Arnie Kogen, Dean Martin, Totie Fields, Jan Murray, Carol Burnett, Michael Palin, The Tonight Show, Bob Newhart, The Groundlings, Jon Lovitz, Phyllis Katz, Tracy Newman, rhyming the damn improv. He even does Hank Azaria doing an Al Pacino impression. Crazy, high energy, fun! And be sure to order Charlie Kogen's debut album, Songs From The Front Seat http://bit.ly/2lDk13M Jay guarantees you'll love at least 4 songs, all 10 probably, or you can write and bitch to him at JayKogen@aol.com - aol, really Jay? Tracy Newman discusses her Johnny appearances, being managed by Ed McMahon, Rodney Dangerfield, writing on Ellen DeGeneres' sitcom Ellen, & working with Bob Newhart.
While the Democrats were debating, I was going flat hair to flat hair with 6 time Emmy Winner, Dan O’Shannon. I believe the victor is clear. He has more height, and 6 other Emmy nods. Whilst running the room at Cheers, barely 30ish, the boss of our Tracy Newman, he coined the phrase, “I’m sorry, was that out loud?” I didn’t believe it either, but it’s documented. I know. From a lightning bolt moment at the age 8, Dan made the decision that the next day he was going to make people laugh. It may have been hit or miss for a few years, but it’s been hit after hit since. From Cheers, Newhart, to Fraiser, that’s quite a story, to Modern Family…. Dan shares suggestions on what to do, and what not to do, if you’re new in the writer’s room. Fueled by his father’s disbelief, Dan set out to prove him wrong and boy, did he ever. Too bad about the Jaguar, pops. Getting serious about the funny, Dan took us through his standup self discoveries to segueing to TV and killing it, his only prep, 3 spec scripts. Bringing us up to speed with his current gig, Seth McFarlane’s The Orville, I felt stupidly unaware, but, In my defense, it’s not yet on Dan’s IMDB or Wiki, so how’s a girl to know? We talked Ted Danson. Kirstie Alley, George Wendt, Bob Newhart, pissing people off, Fred Willard, Ty Burrell, Brooke Shields… and Mrs. Jesus. That’s fun! He’s authored two books to date, you can find all things Dan here http://www.oshannonland.com He claims to be a grandfather, but he still looks like a very young Harry Anderson to me. Night Court, anyone? For someone who’s known exactly what he wanted as a grade school kid, he’s manifested it all and is currently reflective and uncertain about where to lean next. Maybe… nothing? He’s earned it, but I don’t believe it. Not for one silly second. Speaking of silly, Dan channels his early Idol, Jerry Lewis, a couple of times. Now that’s edu-tainment. Age truly is just a number, the number of times the earth has gone around the sun since you’ve been on this planet. So why do we let how many times a planet goes around the sun determine what we do in life? Have you reached a certain age past what you believe is appropriate to start some things on your bucket list? If so pull that list out and start from the top! Our guest host song writer Tracy Newman has chosen to join us and share her wisdom on how new experiences in life can begin at any age. To join the discussion dial into 929-477-2476 and press 1.
We were having so much fun with our friend, Tracy Newman, we broke the internet. Or, Mercury is retrograde… or FB’s Live feed’s a whore. We jumped into the show with Tracy singing arguably my favorite of her tunes, Fire Up The Weed, *coughs* then got right into her Emmy win with co-writer, Jonathan Stark, and the stories around that ground-breaking coming out episode of Ellen, and the politics and personalities behind it, when BAM! We were thrown outta cyberspace. We revisited the conversation here, on our second attempt, but to hear that great Newman tune, it’s up top here https://goo.gl/cA3DZa . Tracy opens this edition with her Carpool song, another gem. More Ellen/Emmy insights followed…. did you know if you’re not a star you gotta pay for your lady? Worth the $300+ bucks, Man, is she a beauty. Ridiculously heady to hold. Tracy’s Peabody Award ain’t no slacker either, even if that one cost another couple of hundred. Who knew? We went back to childhood, her sister Laraine, and brother Dutch––twins. I didn’t know that, neither. Tracy started as a folksinger, did the Greenwich Village scene, also performing in the comedy clubs, where she got a taste for the funny and dated an unlikely fellow, landed an even more unlikely manager, and, a spot on The Tonight Show. A show biz nightmare sent her back to LA where she took up Improv with Laraine, and a group of funny others, founding The Groundlings, where Laraine was plucked for SNL––fun story there. Tracy spent years performing and teaching and at soon to be writing partner Jonathan’s invitation, wrote a script which got them staff positions at Cheers. Not a bad place to launch. Bob, starring Newhart, The Nanny, and Ellen followed, leading to them creating According to Jim, which was a game changer to an already stellar career. Great success and years later, Tracy returned to folk singing and has been living the life she loves ever since. Her current passion is her company, Run Along Home, which produces her CDs for kids. You can find them and her sensationally funny and oft moving tunes for grownups here www.tracynewman.com and www.runalonghome.com. There are a couple of other musical treats, a song for her sis, and loads of great stories about Johnny Carson. Ricky Jay, Skitch Henderson, Lily Tomlin. Lorne Michaels, Bob Newhart. Ed McMahon, Rodney Dangerfield, Fran Drescher, Ellen… and Tracy wants me to tell you, she meant narcolepsy. You’ll know when you get there. The time literally flies. Tracy’s a multi-faceted, multi-talented treat. This loaded slice of Newman’s a feast of fun. Hope for older writers: Tracy Newman broke in when she was 46. She also had other careers. She’s a fascinating Renaissance Woman who once lived with the great Ricky Jay, guested on THE TONIGHT SHOW, and wrote the famous Ellen-coming-out episode of ELLEN. Almost an hour of fun and inspiring stories.
Unfortunately, Tracy Newman has far less renown for her music than her other work, but that's not so surprising given her amazing success as a writer for TV shows like Cheers and Ellen, for which she received an Emmy. Tracy was also a founder of The Groundlings, effectively the farm team for SNL. Her music can be funny and moving, whether for adults (TracyNewman.com) or for kids (RunAlongHome.com).

It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. They started on Cheers, and worked on many shows, including Bob (Bob Newhart), The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show and Hiller and Diller (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.) In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for writing the ground-breaking -coming out- episode of Ellen. In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, According to Jim, which recently completed it’s eighth and final season of production. Tracy has been writing songs all along and is once again performing full-time. She has three CDs: “A Place in the Sun,” “I Just See You” and “I Can Swing Forever,” (which is for children). www.TracyNewman.com
