Expleo, a global engineering, technology and consulting service provider, has announced that it will invest €2M in an accelerator for team-led innovations and technologies that address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The company's annual hackathon in Ireland will determine which projects receive funding. Expleo's hackathon - launched in 2020 - has become a cornerstone of Expleo's ability to consistently bring industry-leading innovations to businesses in Ireland and across the globe. To support innovation, participants are equipped with the latest generative AI technologies and software development tools, along with comprehensive tutorials, hands-on training sessions and mentorship. All solutions are aligned with at least one UNSDG. Over the next two years, Expleo will invest €2M in sustainable solutions and other innovative ideas that are chosen for the accelerator. The investment will include deploying dedicated teams to develop the ideas and bring them to market, as well as understanding their sustainability impact, social benefit, and true market opportunity. Safe Hubs: providing peace of mind at night The winning solution at last year's hackathon was 'Safe Hubs,' a mobile app that can be used any time a person feels vulnerable walking or travelling on their own, usually at nighttime. Expleo deployed a team of experts to develop the solution and partnered with University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland's largest university, on a pilot to improve campus safety. The app enabled users to provide visibility and live tracking of their whereabouts to campus security and automatically alerted security if there were any unexpected changes to their movements. Following the successful UCD pilot, Expleo will trial and pilot Safe Hubs in Dublin, with the aim of extending it to all urban areas and communities in the future. Brian Kennedy, Head of Digital & Innovation, Expleo, said: "On the back of our success in coming up with ideas and then solutions that address issues in areas such as cybersecurity, health and personal safety, our Innovation Accelerator underlines our commitment to investing in sustainable solutions for people and our planet. We firmly believe that by collaborating and pooling our resources, we can find innovative solutions to address critical problems. Whether it's developing new green technologies, supporting sustainable agriculture, or promoting responsible consumption, at Expleo, we are driving positive change in the name of sustainability and the UNSDGs. "Our Innovation Accelerator is a fantastic opportunity for Expleo team members to collaborate, be creative, propose and then build innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Incredible ideas emerge when diverse perspectives come together. We hope that this Innovation Accelerator will not only stimulate new ideas and products but also foster collaboration within our functions and services. The Accelerator, along with events such as our annual hackathon, encourage participants from different areas and skillsets to approach problem-solving with a fresh human-centric mindset. A previous winning entry in Expleo's hackathon was 'ExpleoProtectUS,' a world-first cybersecurity tool specifically designed to thwart SMS phishing attacks. It was recently launched as part of a new security feature within the PTSB mobile banking app, 'PTSB Protect'. See more stories here.

On this episode of Food Lab Talk, Michiel speaks with Bernhard about how tech solutions  can support shifting diets, the importance of centering lived experiences in the change-making journey, and how to balance risk-taking and acute needs to fulfill a long-term vision. Bernhard Kowatsch: “What I would advise my younger self is to really embrace risk taking and not worry as much. There's inherent risk in so many aspects of entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial decision making. And sometimes, that may mean that you're taking risks that are really, really feeling uncomfortable. However, if you're working hard, if you're smart, if you're working with the right people, if you have the right partners, if you're looking for advice... I think there's so much impact that you can make. Just try it out. Make experiments if you don't know what the right solution is. My favorite quote from Kord in this interview - "it takes too long to have the conversation that you want to have" - meaning...we all wish we could sit down with the key executives who need to hear our ideas for 3 hours and get into the weeds, but in reality...that's never possible. When we think of the future of food, transformative technology, or game-changing innovations, we assume that advancements will arise out of traditional tech hubs in the Global North. This isn't necessarily true. The Global South holds tremendous potential and competitions like the XPRIZE Feed the Next Billion — discussed in the previous episode — are proving exactly that. With multiple semi-finalists from APAC and South Asia, it's clear that innovative solutions can come from anyone, anywhere.. In this episode of Feeding 10 Billion, we're joined by Bernhard Kowatsch, who champions this notion through his work at the Innovation Accelerator at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). As head of the accelerator, Bernhard is on a mission to identify, support, and scale startups working towards eradicating hunger and his work is closely aligned with our Mission for Smart Protein. Innovation Forum’s “Innovation Accelerator” action research programme recently published ground-breaking research on how companies can enable smallholder development beyond siloed purchasing and initiatives. Through 80+ interviews with those on the front lines of smallholder engagement, we uncovered opportunities for sourcing companies to link directly with smallholders growing a variety of crops. Many of these, beyond those sold as commodities, can help lift communities out of poverty if market access can be enabled. This is linked with the increasing interest in “decommoditisation” and how that can deliver the transparency needed in supply chains. Using a sustainable commodities marketplace approach, the discussions in this 60-minute webinar focus on how buyers can increase broad based economic development in supplier countries by sourcing multiple crops and collaborating on sourcing opportunities for smallholder communities. Speakers: Goetz Martin, head of sustainability implementation, Golden Agri-Resources Alison Ward, CEO, CottonConnect Ruth Thomas, director, Global Agribusiness Action on Equitable Livelihoods (GAA-EL) Silke Peters, team leader, sustainable agricultural supply chains initiative, GIZ Lea Rankinen, director, sustainability and public affairs, Paulig Group Dr Peter Stanbury, senior associate, Innovation Forum Moderated by: Toby Webb, founder, Innovation Forum For the recent report, see here: https://www.innovationforum.co.uk/research/innovation-accelerator And for a summary article and podcast see here:  http://sustainablesmartbusiness.com/smallholder-supply-chains-how-to-make-sustainability-sustainable/

In 2019, when I started thinking about doing a podcast on innovation in aid, I looked around to see what else was out there. At the time, one podcast stood out to me for its ability to capture the spirit of innovation in aid. It was the Terms of Reference Podcast, which Stephen Ladek ran from 2014 to 2018. Stephen recorded almost two hundred episodes with aid workers, social entrepreneurs, and other change-makers. His guests included CEO of FHI360 Patrick Fine, USAID's Chief Innovation Officer Alexis Bonnell, the President of Chemonics Bernhard Kowatsch, and the Head of the Innovation Accelerator at World Food Programme Jamey Butcher. As one does, I stalked Stephen relentlessly on the internet until he agreed to be on my show. In our conversation, Stephen and I talk about what it means to be a podcaster and an entrepreneur in the aid industry. Stephen shares his secret to success over the years. We gripe about how this sector has plenty of policies and policy makers, and how it has platforms for diplomats and executives to speak - but it doesn't have enough space to share the stories and lessons learned of real people working in the trenches. And, of course, we talk about the craft of podcasting, how far we've come, and how much farther we have yet to go.  This short episode is the second in our experimental 'side chat' format. In this special recording of 15 minutes with the doctor, we have two guests providing a snapshot of two unique products. From SkinVision, we have Program Manager, Loes Van Egmond. SkinVision is a smartphone app that allows users to upload a photo of a skin lesion and get an assessment within 30 seconds. They are trying to improve early detection of skin cancers and subsequently make treatment more affordable. From Needlesmart, we have CEO Cliff Kirby. NeedleSmart is a device that destroys a hypodermic needle in the fraction of a second by heating it to over 1300 degrees Celsius. The product potential to reduce costs and improve the process for sharps disposal. About the SkinVision App: A smartphone app that uses a machine learning algorithm to directly provide dermatological screenings to the public. Launched in 2015 and has 1.2 million downloads so far. 3.5 million pictures in their database, which allows them to constantly test their algorithm. If users receive a high-risk assessment, the app follows up with them to make sure they visit a dermatologist or a doctor. On the lack of progress in chemotherapy: “We’ve set a company mission to save 250,000 lives in the next decade.” Its effectiveness: 95% accurate in diagnosing melanoma and 97% effective in diagnosing non-melanoma. General physicians are 60% accurate and dermatologists are 75-90% accurate based on their experience. “By driving early detection, you can make the treatment much more affordable.” Challenges: The NHS is complex and difficult to work with, but progress is being made at SkinVision as part of the Innovation Accelerator program. “By driving early detection, you can make the treatment much more affordable.” About NeedleSmart: Destroys a hypodermic needle in a fraction of a second by heating it to 1300 degrees. Created to reduce the number of sharps and simplify the disposal process. Wifi enabled, which allows each unit to collect data and automatically reorder supplies based on usage. Its effectiveness: The NeedleSmart process destroys the needle completely, potentially allowing needles to be disposed more simply and cost-effectively. Challenges: The need for a process for early adopters to try out the product and provide feedback and recommendations. Difficulty of getting NHS approval or attention. “The challenge right now is to convince an old embedded process that this could really add value to the system.” For more information: https://www.skinvision.com/ http://needlesmart.com/ enquiries@needlesmart.com https://twitter.com/NeedleSmart Connect with us: http://vinayshankar.net/ https://www.instagram.com/doctor.vinay/ https://twitter.com/VinayShankar

“The challenge right now is to convince an old embedded process that this could really add value to the system.” For more information: https://www.skinvision.com/ http://needlesmart.com/ enquiries@needlesmart.com https://twitter.com/NeedleSmart Connect with us: http://www.vinayshankar.net/ https://www.instagram.com/doctor.vinay/ https://twitter.com/VinayShankar

Finding a way out of the rut of eating the same food as my children is a pain. But I know, that you know, we’re not here to talk about how I can become an Iron Chef. And indeed, in today’s 168th Terms of Reference Podcast episode, we are here to explore how innovation can be applied to making sure people don’t go hungry. My guest for today’s show is Bernhard Kowatsch. He’s the Head of the Innovation Accelerator at the World Food Programme.
