Today we pause to embrace him and all who served us so well.” To honor the values and ideals for which our country's sons and daughters sacrificed, to honor their commitment to duty and country, to thank them for their service and our freedom, and to make sure that they are never, ever, forgotten, the Reagan Library was honored to install a new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument honoring the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military. In this week's A Reagan Forum podcast, we go back to November 12, 2018, for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Memorial's unveiling. Program participants included Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel Woody Williams, actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise, singer John Ondrasik from the band Five for Fighting, and local Gold Star Family members.

On this day in legal history, November 29 marks a significant turning point during the Vietnam War era. In 1967, Robert S. McNamara, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, announced his resignation from the position to become president of the World Bank. This decision came amidst the escalating unpopularity of the Vietnam Conflict both in the United States and internationally.McNamara, who had a rapid ascent from being an automotive executive, had become one of the most powerful Defense Secretaries in American history. His tenure, starting in 1961 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, was marked by a strong managerial style and significant involvement in foreign affairs, particularly the Vietnam War. Initially, McNamara was a staunch supporter of U.S. involvement in the war and played a key role in advising President Johnson to escalate the conflict in 1964. However, as the war progressed, he began to privately question U.S. policy in Vietnam and eventually advocated for a negotiated settlement.In the summer of 1967, McNamara was instrumental in drafting the San Antonio formula, a peace proposal that sought to end U.S. bombing in North Vietnam and invited the North Vietnamese to engage in productive talks. However, this proposal was rejected by North Vietnam in October of the same year. Following this, in early November, McNamara submitted a memorandum to President Johnson, recommending that the U.S. freeze its troop levels, halt the bombing in the north, and shift the responsibility of the ground war to the South Vietnamese. These recommendations, however, were outright rejected by President Johnson.McNamara's resignation was a significant moment in the history of the Vietnam War. He had become a target for the ire of the U.S. anti-war movement due to his initial support for expanding the Vietnam War. His departure marked the end of his tenure as the longest-serving Secretary of Defense. He was succeeded by Johnson adviser Clark Clifford. McNamara's resignation highlighted the internal conflicts and changing views within the U.S. administration regarding the Vietnam War. It also underscored the increasing unpopularity and complexity of the conflict, which continued to shape U.S. foreign policy and legal considerations for years to come.Law firms are grappling with whether to inform clients about their use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in legal work. While AI promises to enhance efficiency and speed, it raises questions about disclosure practices. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, for instance, hasn't decided on a firm policy but emphasizes full disclosure in any AI use. This follows an appeal by President Biden's administration against a decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled in 2022 that the SEC's internal tribunal system violates the U.S. Constitution's Seventh Amendment right to a jury trial and infringes on presidential and congressional powers.The case centers on hedge fund manager George Jarkesy, who was fined and barred from the securities industry by the SEC for securities fraud. Critics argue that the SEC holds an unfair advantage in its administrative proceedings compared to federal court juries. The SEC conducted 270 in-house proceedings in the fiscal year ending September 30, exceeding the 231 cases in federal court.The Supreme Court's ruling could significantly impact enforcement actions against misconduct in various sectors, potentially hampering the SEC and other agencies. The court has previously expressed skepticism towards broad federal regulatory powers, including in a 2018 ruling on the SEC's selection of in-house judges and a 2021 decision facilitating challenges to agency actions in federal court.Jarkesy's challenge, backed by various conservative and business groups, reflects broader concerns about the regulatory reach of the federal "administrative state" in areas like energy, environment, and financial regulation. The Commission is concerned that the deal might reinforce Adobe's dominance in vector and raster editing tools, eliminating Figma as a competitor. Judge Timothy Kelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia denied Meta's motion for the court to oversee the dispute, leading Meta to file an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The core of the dispute is whether an FTC judge or a district judge should decide on potentially tightening a 2019 consent decree, which primarily affects Meta's earnings from users under 18. This legal battle began when the FTC proposed modifying the 2019 settlement, under which Facebook (now Meta) had to pay $5 billion. The world may not be at war yet, but we could be very close. Russia and Ukraine have been at odds for nearly a decade, and things escalated last year. Over the weekend, Hamas bombed Israel and reignited the Palestinian conflict, a fight that began back in the late 1940s. I grew up in the 60s and 70s when the Vietnam Conflict was always the lead story on the nightly news. As long as I've been alive, people and countries across the globe have been at war non-stop. However, it is obvious the photo has been fabricated, or the caption is fabricated. The facts of photo fabrication are the collapsible buttstock and cylindrical forward hand grips. These were not issued on the Military M4 until 1994, 27 years after this photo was taken The apparent full flash suppressor has never been in use on an M16 rifle. A three-pronged flash hider was used in 1967. And the length of the barrel identifies this as a short-barreled rifle. Not in production during the Vietnam Conflict. The photo is a fabrication or was taken after Vietnam, and the caption has been fabricated Compare the two photos to see what a standard-issue battle rifle of the time looked like. No, they are not the same. http://www.vietnamgear.com/ If this is an actual A.P. photo, why the fabrication. I think the photo historians at Associated Press (A.P.) would know better, or are they intentionally lying about the photo? Yes I did say lying. Another option, this being passed off as an A.P. photo by the editors of The Intercept? Someone is lying here. The real question is whether someone is lying. Surprised by the January 6th protests and eventual invasion of the Capital Building by those upset with how the 2020 election was handled?Join me as we walk through the Credit Mobilier Railroad scam, that involved a speaker of the house, and eventual Vice President. We'll review the Teapot Dome scandal, in which a member of the President's cabinet engaged in corruption by selling oil land leases through an illegal insider process for his private benefit. We then discussed the crisis of the Vietnam Conflict, which involved four presidents and the deaths of almost 58,000 members of the US armed forces and an estimated two-hundred to two-hundred fifty thousand South Vietnamese - all conducted without a Declaration of War by the Congress. President Eisenhower did not trust the people of Vietnam to decide their own fate through an election in 1956, fearing that Communism would win. JFK began the involvement of the US in order to to look tougher on Communism domestically. LBJ further escalated the war, but ultimately admitted defeat and withdrew early from the Presidential election of 1968. Richard Nixon misled the American people by continuing the conflct for another four years and escalating it through offensives and bombing campaigns, instead of withdrawing the US swiftly.

My brother was a combat pilot during the Vietnam Conflict and attended one of his Christmas shows. He talked about how meaningful that was. Our family always watched the annual show on television. On Friday, October 7, 2016, At Noon at The Union League Club The First Friday Club of Chicago Welcomes  Superintendent Eddie Johnson, Chicago Police Department    Who will address the issue    "Is There Any Light at the end of the Tunnel?"       During the years of the Vietnam Conflict the Defense Department released, on a weekly basis, the number of U.S. military forces killed and wounded in battle. Needless to say, many weeks, those figures were staggering.      Presently, media outlets in Chicago report the number of people killed and wounded in Chicago at the end of each weekend. Many weekends and weeks those figures are staggering. Sadly, they rival war zones. Over the Labor Day holiday weekend 13 people were killed, victims of gun violence.  Another 52 were shot in Chicago. After eight months and one week 500 people were murdered in the neighborhoods of Chicago.      In every video scene of the shootings in Chicago, there is one common picture: Chicago police officers. The expectation is that these men and women are called upon to stop this seemingly out-of-control situation.      The First Friday Club is honored that Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson will speak to this issue. It is no longer a Chicago neighborhood issue, or a city issue, or even a national issue. The violence in Chicago is now headline news internationally.           At the time of his birth, Superintendent Johnson was born into the toughest community in Chicago, Cabrini Green. At the age of nine his family moved to the south side of Chicago, where he still lives. During the last three decades he has held nearly every position within the Chicago Police Department, from ordinary cop to Chief of Patrol.        Lord, make me an instrument of your peace...

Congress and President Obama worked together to fast-track a new & unexamined NDAA into law. The new law essentially makes NSA data collection legal, cuts military pensions, and spends an enormous amount of money making sure the United States is able to destroy the entire world at a moment's notice. Links to Information in This Episode H.R. 3304: The National Defense Authorization Act of 2014 *The title has been changed to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2014 since it was signed into law. Previously, it was titled "To authorize and request the President to award the Medal of Honor to Bennie G. Adkins and Donald P. Sloat of the United States Army for acts of valor during the Vietnam Conflict and to authorize the award of the Medal of Honor to certain other veterans who were previously recommended for award of the Medal of Honor" The Cyber-security bill (Sections 932- 942) was added by Senator Jay Rockefeller. Section 1071 creates the "Conflicts Records Research Center" and allows states, foreign governments, and "any source in the private sector" to give money to the Department of Defense. Section 143 prohibits the military from retiring the RQ-4 Block 30 Global Hawk drones, which the Air Force doesn't want. Section 234 gives $15 million taxpayer dollars to "United States" companies so they can set up assembly lines for the Iron Dome missile defense system in Israel. No requirement for profit-sharing with the taxpayers was included. Section 242 says the United Stats shouldn't buy products that don't work unless the purchase is "to mainatin a warm line for the industrial base". Section 811 allows private contractors specializing in science, technology, engineering, math, medical, and cyber-security to be paid up to $625,000/year. The President of the United States makes $400,000/year. Section 813 makes it easier for the Department of Defense to hide their reasons for contracting with suspended or disbarred companies. Section 1011 extends the CIA/military program in Columbia for another year. Section 1013 expands the drug war to Chad, Libya, Mali, and Niger. Section 1033-1039 prevent prisoners from Guantanamo Bay prison from being transferred to prisons in the United States, but allows them to be transferred to their home countries if certain conditions are met. Section 1043 orders a report from the President regarding how he creates his kill lists. Section 1056 only allows the military to "prepare" to comply with the New Start Treaty, not to actually comply with the New Start Treaty. Section 1062 says that upgrading nuclear bombers "must remain a high budget priority." Sections 1701-1753 create new rules governing sexual assault in the military. The Congressional Research Service summary of the 2014 NDAA; note that the "Conference Report" numbers (H.R. 3304 is the conference report) are blank. The NDAA was passed via fast-track, which  means no amendments were allowed. H.R. 1960: The National Defense Authorization Act version that passed the House of Representatives earlier this year; it is officially a dead bill. Section 403 of the Budget Agreement - which has been signed into law - cuts the cost of living adjustments to pensions for military veteran's under age 62 by 1% per year.
