Lex interviews Josh Reeves, co-founder of Gusto, a company specializing in payroll, HR, and benefits solutions for small businesses. Josh shares his journey from academia to entrepreneurship, highlighting the challenges and strategies involved in building Gusto. The discussion covers the evolution of technology from Web 2.0, the importance of understanding customer needs, and maintaining strong unit economics. Josh emphasizes Gusto's mission to simplify payroll and HR tasks for small businesses, aiming to improve their survival rates and overall efficiency. The episode underscores the significance of product quality and customer satisfaction in navigating industry competition. Notable discussion points: 1. Solving Payroll as a Massive, Underserved SMB Pain Point: Reeves highlighted how in 2011, 40% of small businesses were fined annually due to manual payroll errors. Gusto addressed this pain using cloud and mobile tech, making payroll fast, accurate, and accessible—especially for non-experts. 2. Product Sequencing and the Power of a Payroll-Centric Ecosystem: Starting with payroll, Gusto built a sticky, horizontal product with strong retention. From there, they expanded into benefits, time tracking, and more—adding products based on customer pull and reinforcing their ecosystem. 3. Organizational Evolution: From Founder-Led to Functional and Matrixed: Gusto grew from 3 co-founders to 2,600+ employees by evolving from a hands-on team to a matrix structure. Reeves emphasized hiring leaders suited to each stage and giving small, focused teams autonomy to drive new product development. MENTIONED IN THE CONVERSATION Topics: Fintech, Gusto, Payroll, HR, Zazzle, SMB, CAC, Customer, Scaling, Growth, Web2.0 ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

As the buzz around Web3 grows, I thought it would be good to revisit the concepts of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. What do those terms actually mean? And does Web3 have any connection to them?  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you've been paying attention online, you might hear a lot of noise being made about something called web3... And NFTs... Not to mention cryptocurrencies. We tried our level best to make sense of them but decided this was too heavy a topic to leave to the feeble minds hosting the podcast, so we decided to bring on an expert - Ekalavya Bhattacharya. Eka is an entrepreneur in the web3 space, and also runs a fashion tech company. In the past, he's been heavily involved with various web ventures - from making money off squatted email IDs in school (!) to being a part of high-growth early internet companies like Contests2Win, Zapak, and heading the digital wing of MTV India. Chuck calls him one of the smartest people he knows. Recently, he's forayed into the web3 space, and he's got a lot to talk about it. Join us for this 2-part episode where we speak with Eka about the changing landscape of the internet, how it's evolved, what NFTs / web3 really means, and what the future holds. It gets geeky, so strap in!Find Eka at:https://www.instagram.com/ekalavya/https://twitter.com/ekalavyabhttps://www.instagram.com/FusedBulbMedia/?hl=enAdd one part news, one part bad jokes, one part Wikipedia research, one part cult references from spending too much time on the internet, one part Wodehouse quotes, and one part quality puns, and you get Simblified.A weekly podcast to help you appear smarter, to an audience that knows no less! We're getting back up to full speed this week, so Mary Ann and Alex along with Grace behind the scenes took on our Friday show. Next week Natasha and Chris are back, and we'll do our regular three-show lineup. Today, however, despite a smaller team we had just as much as always go chew through:OpenSea's epic new fundraise: Alex did a little Fun Math on the company's trading volume and possible revenue totals. The gist is that OpenSea is a big business. But with NFTs as volatile as they are, charting regular growth will prove difficult.During our crypto chat, we also dug into the Web 2.0 vs. web3 debate that has been raging. From there we pivoted to fintech, with notes on Petal's funding round, Ribbit's new fund, and how Mexican fintech Bankaya is going after its target customers via offline methods. Then it was notes on the private and public markets' dissonance, and a few moments to complain about COVID.We are back Monday morning! Chat you then!
