It's nice to have friends in high places, and in water, there are few places higher than the presidency of the Water Environment Federation, the core trade body for the wastewater industry. Ifetayo Venner and I got to know each other in 2017 when we both spoke at the opening session of WEFTEC, WEF's annual gathering for the wastewater world, and we spoke in a cavernous room filled with about 5000 pros talking through our stories of how we got into water. Ifetayo's was a lot better than mine, and no surprise. She is an enormously accomplished professional, Past President of WEF and a Senior VP at Arcadis, the massive engineering consultancy. She has led the creation of some very serious projects in wastewater, and I wanted to have her on The Fundamental Molecule to help us understand the role of engineering consultancies in the sector, what the world looks like from her point of view, the opportunities in infrastructure renewal, and of course, her own path through all of it. Earth Observation Science (EOS) is a rapidly growing field, with applications ranging from water risk assessment to sustainability reporting. Satellite data can be used to monitor drought and flood risk, water quality, and leak detection. The market for EOS solutions in the water sector is estimated to reach $2 billion by 2027. Utility and technology providers are increasingly interested in this space. This market potential is explored in detail in BlueTech's newly published report on EOS, which examines the technologies, market size, and key players. The report is especially relevant for municipal leaders, chief technology officers, R&D managers, and sustainability managers.Brine management and zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) are also important topics in the water industry. While the market for these solutions has grown more slowly than expected, the market opportunity is currently estimated at $600 to $800 million.  Technological advancements have led to the development of smaller capacity systems, now being applied in industries like textiles and food & beverage, largely driven by stricter environmental regulations.Another significant aspect of the discussion is the technology shakeout observed since the last report in 2018. Some technologies, such as forward osmosis, have evolved to find new applications outside traditional ZLD use cases, like concentrating fruit juices in the food and beverage industry. For listeners interested in exploring these topics further, the latest reports on Earth Observation Science and Brine Management & ZLD are now available for download. WEFTEC 2024 in New OrleansBlueTech will be hosting several events at WEFTEC, including the Innovation Pavilion and the CrockTank session, where emerging technologies will be showcased.Don't miss the Jamming for Water session on Saturday night, October 5th, and the Client Breakfast Briefing on Tuesday, October 8th.Reports & ResourcesEarth Observation Science Report: Download the ReportBrine Management & ZLD Report: Download the ReportWEFTEC 2024: Registration--Presented by BlueTech Research®, Actionable Water Technology Market Intelligence. Scaling UP! H2O

We have the technology to treat any type of water, so instead of focusing on 'water scarcity,' let's talk about 'water abundance'. - Walid Khoury In the latest episode of the Scaling UP! H2O podcast, we explore how to shift the narrative from "Water Scarcity" to "Water Abundance" with returning guest Walid Khoury, President and CEO of Desalytics. Walid's global perspective on water technology and treatment options provides invaluable insights for water professionals, industry owners, policymakers, and anyone interested in addressing global water challenges. Here are five strategies Walid provides to guide your thinking from the challenges of water scarcity toward the possibilities of water abundance: Embrace Long-Term Thinking and Planning: When addressing water issues or exploring new opportunities, consider both the mid- and long-term impacts. This approach is especially crucial in developing markets where sustainable growth and solutions are essential. Collaborate with Private Industry, Politicians, and Individuals to Achieve SDG 6: While one person cannot change the world, thousands working toward a shared goal can. Walid discusses the vital role these groups play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims to ensure safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene for all. Integrate Innovative Technologies: Embrace the innovative aspects of the water industry by implementing modern technologies and techniques. For instance, Hong Kong began using saltwater in toilets in the 1950s due to a scarcity of freshwater. Today, around 80% of toilets in Hong Kong use saltwater for flushing, which conserves fresh drinking water. Industrial water treaters can harness these advancements to enhance their practices and assist clients in achieving a "water positive" status, surpassing the goal of being "water-neutral." Advocate and Communicate Effectively: Promote water positivity by using language that raises awareness of the options available. Building connections and collaborating with local partners can help address local water challenges more effectively. Expand Your Global Understanding: Walid encourages industrial water treaters to expand their knowledge and experience beyond familiar markets by attending international water conferences and exploring global opportunities. By tuning in to this one-hour episode, you will gain actionable insights and practical knowledge on how to contribute to water abundance, reshape water management strategies, and make a positive impact on both local and global scales. Walid's involvement in the Water Positive Think Tank and his dedication to SDG 6 offers a roadmap for those looking to advance their careers and make a meaningful difference in the water industry. The question is, how can we effectively use and consume it locally rather than sourcing it from afar?" - Walid Khoury "We have access to a wealth of technologies; the key is in applying them effectively. I like to read the summary of methods and the interferences for water testing. I do! You should hang out at parties with me, I'm a real riot.  Anyway, there is a LOT to be learned by just reading these two sections of a test procedure. For example, did you know the FerroVer method for Total Iron “converts all soluble iron and most insoluble forms of iron in the sample to soluble ferrous iron?” Then the soluble ferrous iron reacts with 1-10 phenanthroline indicator to form an orange color in proportion to the concentration of iron in the sample? The summary said it converts “most insoluble forms of iron,” so right away, I could imagine exceptions to this caveat. Reading the interferences for the Total Iron test, I see that insoluble iron oxides in the sample may require a digestion to make them soluble. I also notice that molybdate at 50 mg/L has no effect on results, but what about over 50 mg/L? That's where the FerroMo Method for Total Iron comes in. I learned all of that by just reading those two little sections of the test procedure. What else is out there waiting to be learned?   2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! (don't) Waste Water!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2022 0:55

Patrick Decker is the CEO of Xylem. Xylem is the fourth largest water business in the World and a water and wastewater technology company that's well known for its motto: "Let's solve water." Eleven years ago, almost day for day, ITT spun off its water business to create Xylem. That move itself didn't change much, but the eleven years' journey that followed profoundly reshaped the company and, by extension, many aspects of the Water Industry itself.  Patrick Decker has been leading that transformation for now almost nine years, and in a sometimes very conservative Water Sector, he's bringing much of a fresh breath!  For instance, a couple days ahead of his WEFTEC visit, he shared on social media which days he would attend and invited anyone to come to talk with him at Xylem's booth. And as we'll discuss today, as walking the talk is a critical pillar of his values, he also really had those informal discussions: the perks of being approachable. Does Xylem need the exposure of this podcast? Not at all; they already draw 1 billion people to their campaigns through their partnership with the City Football Group. But I think we all need the inspiration Patrick shares today. Before even recording, he mentioned how he would be worse of a guest than his brilliant colleagues Austin Alexander and Sivan Zamir that already appeared on that microphone. It wasn't humble brag but a sound respect for his team. And during and after recording, he addressed me as a peer in this Water Industry - which arguably I'm by no means, as I would be aware if I was leading a 5 billion business.  What I want to underline here is how inspirational it is to see this kind of Water Leader. We know the challenges ahead, and it's good to see those qualities in the captains of the boats! Patrick was kind enough to stop by my microphone to share this wisdom shot. But he also had to continue his journey, as he was awaited on scene to give his talk, which makes for a short episode today.  As you can imagine, I have dozen more questions that I would love to raise him, and that's where you can help me to provide you with the answers. If you like that first session and enjoy Patrick's answers, share that episode around you. Recommend it to your friends and peers, and come leave me a comment under my LinkedIn post to encourage Patrick to come back! I'm pretty confident that with the right level of support from all of you, I can win him over for a deeper dive. So come one, do it, and I'll meet you on the other side! (https://www.theh2duo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Water_Nerds_Guide_WEFTEC2018.png) 2018 was our first WEFTEC experience, however, it occurred the same week as Water Smart Innovations which we were speaking at. We had 36 hours to take in one of the largest conferences in North America. Throughout our careers, although we included wastewater in our education efforts, most of our time was spent on the drinking water side where the perception was that WEF and WEFTEC were only about wastewater. We’ve learned that WEF and WEFTEC are so much more and are truly representative of the One Water message and mindset. We met some amazing people, connected with old friends and met our new friends in real life that we’d only known via social media. We aren’t journalists, we’re storytellers and the story of our experience at WEFTEC 2018 can be summed up in one word: people. We wanted to share them and their stories with you! WEFTEC is the largest conference of its kind in North America and offers water quality professionals from around the world with the best water quality education and training available today. Also recognized as the largest annual water quality exhibition in the world, the expansive show floor provides unparalleled access to the most cutting-edge technologies in the field; serves as a forum for domestic and international business opportunities; and promotes invaluable peer-to-peer networking among registrants. Curtis Smalley, City of Waco, says, “Everyone in the industry needs to attend WEFTEC at least once, but then WEFTEC is like potato chips: You can’t go just once!” Top Takeaways: Opening session keynote, Kevin Brown (http://kevinbrownspeaks.com/) , blew us away. Check out his book The Hero Effect and you’ll get a glimpse of the message he shared with the room. Water nerds are everyday heroes.  amazing video (https://watersworthit.org/resources/) that debuted at the opening session. Get involved!
