Send us a textJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with Chris Catron as we dissect the evolving dynamics of leftist movements, from the millennial wave to the emerging Zoomer left. We're making the bold statement that the recent Leninist turn intertwined with neo-Kautskyism is reshaping contemporary leftist politics. Exploring the rise of neo-Stalinist and Trotskyist tendencies, we also tackle the challenges faced by groups like the Democratic Socialists of America in integrating Trotskyist organizations. Our dialogue with Chris ventures into the heart of leftist ideological shifts, scrutinizing the friction between radical liberalism and Marxist-Leninism, especially in the wake of MAGA-Communism. There's an intriguing spotlight on historical figures such as Earl Browder and William Z. Foster, juxtaposed with modern platforms like the PSL and Monthly Review. The discussion critically examines the left's response to mainstream political figures, including the complexities of Bernie Sanders' and Jeremy Corbyn's influence on progressive politics. Finally, we unravel the layers of U.S.-Israel relations since the 1980s and the intricacies of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Chris offers insights into the paradoxes within leftist politics, from protest voting frustrations to the psychological barriers of breaking away from the Democratic Party. We also reflect on Marxist critiques, the frustrations with critical theory, and the cycles of generational shifts in political sentiment. This episode promises an enlightening exploration of historical memory, political norms, and the enduring challenges of building solidarity within leftist movements. On the second episode of Organized the Unorganized, we kick things off with an account of the institutional formation of the CIO, and then get to the organization's key personalities. John L. Lewis, the founding president of and driving force behind the CIO, unsurprisingly gets a fair amount of time, and we focus in particular on the reasons for his bold leadership at this decisive moment in history. We also introduce Sidney Hillman, the only other real center of power in the organization besides Lewis in the early CIO, as well as some of the key organizers of the CIO, most of whom hailed from the United Mine Workers of America. [Repost from Revolutionary Left Radio] - This episode aims to serve as an introduction to the Trade Union Educational League (TUEL) which was the vehicle through which the communists in the U.S. from 1920-1935 aimed to base themselves amongst the proletariat and transform the labor movement into, as Marx said, an "organizing centre of the working class for its broad interest of complete emancipation." We focus particularly on the TUEL's activity from 1920-1929.Topics discussed are the need for revolutionary theory for a revolutionary movement, the role of the industrial proletariat in a proletarian socialist struggle, the shortcomings of William Z. Foster's prior two syndicalist leagues that operated from 1912-1917, and the work of TUEL militants in the mining, needle trades, and textile industries.Interested in studying Marxism-Leninism-Maoism and applying Marxism to the labor movement? Chase from Mass Struggle joins Breht to discuss American labor history and communist political theory in relation to the trade union struggle through the lens of TUEL, or the Trade Union Educational League (1920 -1929). Together they discuss trade union consciousness, the necessity of a vanguard party, William Z. Foster, the limitations of spontaneity, specific actions taken by TUEL in their struggle against bosses and labor beurocrats, the importance of revolutionary theory, and then they even have a comradely back and forth over the differences between MLs and MLMs on the question of China. An edited live recording of our 7/2022 Red Start session on "Organizing Methods in the Steel Industry" by William Z. Foster.
Please enjoy the second part of our series where we host comrade Dr. Barry Lituchy from Brooklyn College for lectures on fascism in Europe. It is vitally important for us as Communists today to understand the significant role that fascism is playing in the current US/EU/NATO conflict with Russia. Comrade Georgi Dimitrov put it correctly when he said that "Fascism acts in the interests of the extreme imperialists, but it presents itself to the masses in the guise of champion of an ill-treated nation, and appeals to outraged national sentiments..." This lecture was recorded on March 17th, 2022. Long live the anti-fascist struggle! Down with fascism in Ukraine! The People's School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents selected articles from Volume 18, No. 12 of "The Communist," put out by the Communist Party USA in December 1939. This article by William Z. Foster entitled "Lenin and Stalin as Mass Leaders" goes into the particular historical significance of the contributions of comrades Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin to the world Communist movement. These comrades played an invaluable role both in the fields of Marxist-Leninist theory and practice, as well as in the building of socialism in the world's first worker's and peasant's states. Please enjoy this PSMLS reading of an article by comrade C.E. Ruthenberg entitled "The Bolshevists: Gravediggers of Capitalism," published in January 1919 in The Ohio Socialist. Today we celebrate comrade Ruthenberg's 140th birthday and we consider this video a tribute to his contributions to the Communist movement in America. This article was written prior to the establishment of what was then founded as the Communist Party of America (CPA), and gives the general reaction of the left-wing of the socialist movement in the USA to the events of the Great October Socialist Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Given the hindsight available to us, this article proves to be an outstanding forecast of the instrumental role in history ultimately played by the Bolsheviks. It is our duty to fill the shoes of those like comrade Ruthenberg, so as to carry on the Bolshevik struggle for the building of a Soviet America. We hope you learn something new! Please enjoy this PSMLS reading of A. Landy's 1929 article "The Right of Revolution: An American Revolutionary Tradition" published in that year's July edition of "The Communist," the former theoretical organ of the CPUSA, and the current theoretical organ of the PCUSA. Landy lays out a brilliant case as to why the right of revolution is indeed an American tradition, as well as why it is important to study and learn from our own revolutionary history. Going forward, it is our duty as working-class Americans to struggle for a workers' government, the only government that can truly be "of the people, by the people, and for the people." This is an unabridged audiobook-style reading of William Z. Foster's 1936 pamphlet 'Organizing Methods in the Steel Industry,' the first known how-to guide for organizers. In the years following the violently-busted 1919 steel strike, of which Foster had been a lead organizer, steel organizing in the USA had ground to a halt. After the signing of the National Labor Relations Act by President Roosevelt, a new generation of organizers were ready to give it another go and Foster shared what he had learned through the previous failed drive, carefully politicizing the courses of action that would be required in order to achieve union militancy. Please enjoy this PSMLS reading of comrade Moses Miller's 1950 pamphlet "N*zis Preferred: The Ren*zification of Western Germany." This text masterfully exposes the preferential attitude of American finance capital towards N*zi fascists in post-WWII Germany. Capitalist media feeds us the false history that the GDR was a repressive, barbaric state, etc. If you're looking for these traits, look no further than former N*zi officials and N*zi sympathizers who helped lead the West German government with the knowledge and encouragement of the USA's government. Nick Driedger joins the show to discuss the legacy and ideas of William Z. Foster, former president the Communist Party USA and trade unionist involved in the early IWW and AFL. We adopt a critical lens discuss Foster's concepts of a "militant minority" and "boring from within" as a strategy for pulling conservative unions to the left. Driedger also explains the reaction and criticism leveled against Foster's ideas when he presented them to the IWW in 1911. This and more on the latest episode of Laborwave Radio. The People's School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents Chapter 20 from comrade William Z. Foster's 1955 work entitled "History of the Three Internationals." What was the reason for the split between the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks? What role did the Party of a New Type play in the development of Marxism internationally? How did it relate to the opportunism of the Second International? Foster answers all these questions are more in this brilliant analysis of Lenin's Party of a new type. We've talked about the importance of unions being organized and run in a “rank-and-file” manner a million times on the show, but we hadn't really had a good opportunity to sit down and layout exactly what that means. On this episode, we discuss what exactly rank-and-file unionism is, what it is not, and why it's so vital if we want to build effective organizations that will fight for the working class. We go through counter examples of Consumer Co-ops, ESOPs, and the methodology used for many bureaucratically run unions here in the US, Business Unionism. We finish off by discussing a short guide to rank-and-file organizing used by communists during the Depression, Organizing Methods in the Steel Industry by William Z Foster, and how that methodology is still relevant today. On part two of this series, we will discuss several examples of rank and file unionism in practice in more detail. Does abandoning the "Communist" label further the interests of the working class? Or does this further the interests of the capitalist class? We hope this clip sheds some light on this crucial issue. Some of those in the broader American leftist community misunderstand Huey Long to be a friend of the working class. Far from being any sort of "socialist," let alone Communist, "In [Huey Long's] opinion, it was either Share Our Wealth in America 'or Communism.' " It is crucial that Communists be able to identify the difference between those who are fighting for the working class and those who are merely using the revolutionary fervor of the working class for the gain of the capitalist class.
