I’m Mary Lyn Jenkins, and I’m constantly creating. I’m a momma, a wife, a business woman, a catalyst for wellness through my company Big Fish Co., a yoga teacher, a bestselling author and a designer. I’m all these things and I’m still finding out who I am
In this episode honoring Father's Day, Mary Lyn has a beautiful conversation with the greatest influence in her life — her Dad, Dell Hill. He shares his life through stories — how he grew up and what his passion has created. His entrepreneur journey of creating Selwood Farm — his 40 year business that is also his home — just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Today's episode is his walk through the past 80 years of life, 40 years of creating and developing Selwood Farm, and his heart for family, life and relationships. Today's conversation is about the sweetness of growing up in smalltown Alabama and the vivid memories he has of neighborhood, high school, and community where everybody knew each other and supported each other. Dell shares about life as an entrepreneur — and how he's poured his life and creativity into his 40 year business alongside his wife of 57 years. As owner of his business, Selwood Farm, (and still working daily!) an 800 acre property that has held the name Selwood since 1834, Dell is synonymous with this beautiful place he calls home. With more than 10,000 guests at the farm annually, the specialness is experienced by everyone who breathes its fresh air, enjoys meals in the country house, attends an outdoorsman event or experiences a world class quail hunt on the property. Dell served as a lieutenant in the army, worked in the chemical corp, served in the Senate for the state of Alabama and also as Probate Judge; he graduated from Auburn University in 1964 and still bleeds orange and blue. Among many amazing titles, the best one he holds is Dad. Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there who are leading their kids and families with love, commitment, and selflessness. In this conversation you'll hear:How our fathers teach us through their actions How home and business can create a life well-livedWhat life in the 1940's was like; and its sweet simplicityWhat can be experienced through staying committed to relationshipWhy the great ride of life and enjoying every drop is the destination Resources:Selwood Farm's Website: selwoodfarm.comSelwood Farm's Instagram: @selwoodfarmOne Creative Act's Instagram: @onecreativeactMary Lyn Jenkins's Instagram: @marylynbigfishBig Fish Co.'s Instagram: @livebigfishcoBig Fish Co.'s Website: livebigfishco.com Mary Lyn Jenkins's Book: The Transformative Power Of Language

Brittany Palugod is a New Jersey native now living in New York City. She's a creative of the best kind — wildly organized, generous, thoughtful, very detailed, and an equal visionary with a big heart and full of infectious personality. She and the expertise she offers through her company, Clean Slate Consulting Co. has guided me from my bricks and mortar business website to my new (and lovely) Big Fish Co. website that launches this month! I actually met Brittany many years ago; we've worked together through leadership platforms, teaching yoga, coach training platforms, operating yoga studios, volunteer work and serving on a foundation board. We've laughed together and cried together, but if I have to come up with a theme, ours is a friendship that proves you SHOULD work with your friends. Today we talk about what has shaped her and impacted her recently. As a newlywed, Brittany has been through the heartache of miscarriage and shares vulnerably and courageously what she and her husband have moved through. We talk marriage and business; and moving through every moment of it together. She shares that softening was her greatest strength. Fabulous. That's what Diana Naramore is. She's also one of the hardest workers I know — in parenthood, marriage and business. She and her husband/business partner, Steve, built a model for what small business can be when sweat, tears, perseverance and lots of kindness are in the recipe — and it's something that was the experience of home for me when I first moved to Seattle, Washington in early 2000. The Sip & Ship, now with two locations — the flagship store in Ballard and the sister shop in Greenwood — is now 20 years old. With the perfect tagline — sip, ship, shop — The Sip & Ship is a neighborhood hub for grabbing a cup of coffee, an oversized warm chocolate chip cookie, while picking up a beautiful letterpress card and gift for a friend and mailing all your packages for personal or business needs all in one swoop. It's kid friendly, dog friendly, and people friendly. Everyone inside aims to please and provide every guest with the highest level of acknowledgement, interaction and care. It's a kindness store; and today, Diana shares her best practices, her family struggles and successes while building and believing in small business, and how she's persevered in creating life through the Sip & Ship and welcome people in with love every step of the way. Kimberly Mashek is the daughter of a U.S. Navy EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Instructor and as a result, has lived all over the country. She finished her bachelor's degree at the University of Florida, and worked as an Infant -Toddler Developmental Specialist for the State of Florida's early intervention program, Early Steps. After completing her Master's of Education in Counselor Education she was hired by Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, where she served three school years as the middle school counselor and for the last six school years as a high school counselor at one of the largest comprehensive high schools in the district. Kimberly is a wife, mom, a student advocate, a yoga teacher, and an avid DIY-er. As an extremely organized creative, her talents run deep. I met Kimberly a little over 10 years ago when she walked in to take a yoga class and soon thereafter, became my student through my leadership teacher training. Her heart is for the next generation. She is committed and passionate in making a difference in the lives of kids and so it's very fitting that today we talk about the seasons — the seasons of a school year and that another school year is wrapping up for her. We talk about how we each are the SOMEBODY a kid needs and in being that, we create a connection to home and a sense of security for a kid. She, along with other high school counselors, don't always get the credit they deserve for pulling kids to the finish line through challenging seasons. On this One Creative Act's first birthday episode, it's very appropriate to spend this time with Kimberly; and we acknowledge her and all of our school counselors who have worked from dedication and love to support families and our children throughout the school year. Karen Torrone's perspective is simple: see what needs to be trimmed in order to succeed, be a model for consistency and practice what you want to have happen. And her resilience and kindness almost seem supernatural. After experiencing the murder of her mom in 1998, she's got a thing or two we can learn regarding forgiveness and moving forward. She's dealt with pain, healing and forgiving. It was through the practice of yoga and renewal in her faith that she gained clear insight into not giving up and instead, giving love. Today, Karen also shares what it takes — and what it took to keep a community together, connected and wanting to come back after almost 400 days of closure due to Covid mandates.. She shares what it takes to forgive something that seems unforgivable. She shares how to stay in life living fully and to fully serve no matter what comes your way. Karen Torrone has a wealth of experience in life and business. Born and raised and now an eleven-year business owner in her home of Staten Island, New York, Karen serves her community through 5 Boro Power Yoga. She is also a co-creator and co-facilitator of Lit From Within Yoga, an upper level virtual training platform for yoga professionals and leaders. One of the common threads in my marriage to TF Jenkins is our love for building things together. Today's episode is a nod to our anniversary that we celebrate this month and our 24-year journey of creating home together. We've grown up together over the past two decades; and building things has always been part of our story. We love history, studying historical architecture, knowing where every antique we have originated — we love what our parents have passed on to us. We love adding to the harmony of the already-existing landscape versus being in opposition with it. Everywhere we've had the opportunity to build and create, we've shared a desire to put something back into that geographical area that looks like it's always been there; and today we share it all.TF studied Building Science at Auburn University and law at Cumberland School of Law. He combined his love for building, restoration and law and pursued historical preservation; later, with a cross-country move, TF transitioned into finance and wealth management while keeping his love for building things. TF always embraced creating home with me — with our first home in Washington, second in Colorado, and third in Florida. In seeing how structures were built throughout history when homes were designed because of where the sun set or how the wind blew, creating cool spaces when it gets hot so the house's design has sustainability and longevity, and also thinking about the durability of materials that make for a newly designed home to look like it always belonged — these are the things TF and I have loved studying as we've built through the years. Today we talk about building together and the people who supported each construction project and how special it has been. From craftsmen, beloved architects who we worked with and adore, and community visionaries — check them all out in the show notes below. I am so thankful for TF's partnership and creativity for 24 years and for all that we've built together. I hope you enjoy this love story of creating home through the years between me and my favorite project manager, TF Jenkins. Owner of two amazing yoga studios — the original in downtown Charleston and also a location in Mt. Pleasant — wearing and living her title – Director of Solutions — not only in business but in family and life, Beth has always been one to watch to see how it's done professionally, gracefully and always with humor and fun. Today she shares why she's chosen the high road in business for 19 years. I met Beth Thomas almost 20 years ago. She was a single lady, entrepreneur, and changing the landscape of Charleston, South Carolina, by building the first power yoga studio on King Street. She's seen a lot of change in her booming town during the past two decades and experienced the same amount of change personally — now, married, a mom, and spending time in two cities she calls home — Greenville and Charleston — Beth is now the sole owner of Charleston Power Yoga after her business partnership dissolved. Today, we talk about it; moving out of a partnership when it's not expected and how to handle it even when you don't know how to handle it. Through her business challenges and the impact of Covid on her team and business, Beth's grace, leaning into faith and a deep sense of humble leadership caused the doors of her business to remain open. Rebuilding a community space that is now thriving is a necessary message for every entrepreneur and there's no one better to learn from than Beth. A best friend is everything. And Sally is mine. I met Sally my first year of living in Seattle, Washington back in 2000. Our paths crossed because someone said we had to meet — so we did. She's smart, well-read, proactive, hard working, a great mom and wife and committed to her growth and elevating others. An entrepreneur and Representative of Creatives, Sally is the Founder and CEO of her own company Sally Reps — Representing Commercial Photographers, Photo Stylists and Creative Directors in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco. Sally Reps is now over 20 years old!Sally Bjornsen says she circles around creativity — she has had major success in being a representative of creatives instead of choosing a life of creativity for herself. I see things differently. Sally is wildly creative. She is an example of how to embrace creativity and love business while supporting others living into her daily choices of humor, color, and spice. This conversation is what happens when two best friends have an hour together. In today's episode, we talk about the good old days when she was my rep! We discuss raising kids — the differences from when we were growing up and the present generation, their pressures and influences, and how the impact of Covid is far from done on this present generation. We talk about music and the creative options that kids have today to pursue nontraditional education after high school. And we talk about what we, as parents, have let happen and what we can do about it to support our kids to bring back some sense of security for their future. Welcoming Season Three is amazing! I am so excited to bring this special season of green growth, hope, and creativity to you — and it's perfectly situated in the spring months. It's a season to grow gratitude, too — as the world continues to swirl and uncertainties are guaranteed, this season and the beauty that Home has become seems to be more important than ever. Creating Home is the theme this season. It's the first season I expand beyond the walls of Jacksonville, Florida; I introduce the people and places in my life who cause the experience of HOME — because of who they are, their talents, their commitment to live boldly, with humor and heart, and make every space feel like an invitation — like coming HOME. A lot of the people you'll hear from this season are why I feel at home — in my life and in my work, successes and celebrations and also through struggles and challenges. The season is full of authentic conversations with creatives who have blessed me with the experience of Home through the decades. These are some of my dearest friends and colleagues, teachers and inspirations. In this solo episode, I share five practices for creating and returning home. With simple things to remember, we have the opportunity to shift the space that matters the very most. Home is where the heart is. So what better creative act than to soften the heart and soften the home? Although home is a physical space that has the ability to awaken our senses, it also represents a space where we can just be ourselves with the ones we love most. This season is a combination of solo and guest episodes that invite listeners into the experience of creating home within the walls of your house and within the relationships that matter most to you. In this conversation you'll hear:Why Season Three is the right time to cultivate stories and experiences of Creating HomeWhat Five Practices Create Home and Bring me back Home (physically and spiritually)How we are all here to embrace home and it's the place we have been given to bloomHow to reclaim Home and grow it softer this springResources:One Creative Act's Instagram: @onecreativeactMary Lyn Jenkin's Instagram: @marylynbigfishBig Fish Co.'s Instagram: @livebigfishcoBig Fish Co.'s Website: livebigfishco.com Mighty Women's Website: livebigfishco.com/mighty-women

Almost 10 years ago, I knew Caitlin as a cool, surfer girl. And she still is; but what has changed is her confidence in claiming the life she wanted to create. And so she did. Cait pursued and has created an intentional, simple life in Puerto Rico and lives her choice in gratitude. She grew up surfing from age 8; and after her 21st birthday, she was drawn to the physical practice of yoga. With a little encouragement, Cait said yes to yoga teacher training in her hometown of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and experienced yoga and surfing as a powerful partnership for her life. Today, she shares how her choices have created her life of simplicity and health and how choosing simplicity can be just as much work to cultivate as a life of complexity. Social media platforms, as well as the online growth through the pandemic, has expanded Cait's perspective to teach yoga virtually. She has created and recorded classes for both The Salty Club App/online platform, as well as for RAD Roller's Mobility App. She is currently working on creating short pre-recorded classes available on her website, sunburntandsalty.com . Cait lives with her fiance and has attracted her parents into the lifestyle of Rincon. Her love for family, simplicity, and adventure are matched with her committed practices to live healthy, move daily and embrace being a contribution where she lives in serving others. In this conversation you'll hear:How a simple life takes practiceWhy consistency in anything is the only real road to fulfillmentWhy a physical practice of yoga, surfing, and mindful movement mattersWhy claiming gratitude every day is most importantResources:One Creative Act's Instagram: @onecreativeactMary Lyn Jenkin's Instagram: @marylynbigfishBig Fish Co.'s Instagram: @livebigfishcoBig Fish Co.'s Website: livebigfishco.com Caitlin Lawson's Instagram: @sunburntandsaltyCaitlin Lawson's website: sunburntandsalty.com

Photographer, painter, creative. Marilia Capeli is many things — beautiful and brave are at the top of the list. At a young age, Marilia flew to Jacksonville, Florida, away from her family and home in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She came to the US for school and began a creative journey. She took risks and steered herself in the direction of what her deep intuition and listening kept telling her — she was a Creative and there was no stopping her.Currently, as the staff photographer of Natural Life, a national lifestyle brand synonymous with passionate dreamers and bohemian inspired decor, Marilia is the epitome of the American dream — hard work, committed to the process — and it almost looks like it all landed in her lap. But challenges are nothing new to her; and none of this happened easily. Hers is a story of commitment, passion, and vision. She works with private clients, as well, with a keen eye for creating thoughtful, inspired therapeutic images — her clients love the love and beauty she captures.Through trusting the process, honoring her father, and committed to work to make her dreams come true, Marilia graduated from college, got her Masters Degree and successfully obtained her green card. She directs her steps from strengthening her listening to herself and shares how much family — especially her father — has been part of her growth in remembering what she loves. Friends are life's treasures. And today, I'm with one of my best, Rachel Roberts Mattox. She's the CEO of Oyl and Water, a beauty brand development and marketing agency; she contributed in Season One to the podcast and I wanted her back to discuss 2021. We share our reflection and completion of 2021. Specifically, we wanted to talk about our learnings — what we gained because of 2021; and also the things we leave in 2021. We used the word breakdown — because isn't it really a breakdown when things don't go the way you want them to go? And what we each recognize is without breakdowns, the deeper learning for life may not be born. What is born is a breakthrough. We shared today our breakdowns and the void that remained because of them — but ultimately the learning and greatness that we bring with us into 2022 because of those very things that challenged us last year. Deepened conversation is one of the most creative mediums there is. In fact, we each left this episode complete with 2021, deeper in our friendship and excited to create 2022. The invitation is that you, too, sit down with a good friend, allow for space and time to share and listen in a deepened conversation so you can hear yourself and each other acknowledge the work you put into last year; and your insights and wisdom that you've gained because of living during an amazing time in the world. Chapters in our life are always changing. After playing soccer professionally and dabbling in a number of marketing jobs, Kat Casey founded her first agency in 2007. Continuing to create, the uncertain chapter of cancer hit Kat on June 24, 2014. She woke up from passing out on her condo floor in indescribable pain and having trouble breathing. She ended up in the ER and heard the words, “You have cancer.” Her story is one of choice of attitude and a commitment to win through the uncertainty. Surrounded by family and friendship, Kat found her new ‘normal' through nine months of chemotherapy to be her involvement with work, friends, and a good glass of wine. Her sense of normalcy — friends and a glass of wine which she cleverly named her ‘chemo noir nights' — became the inspiration for her passion project and nonprofit organization, Chemo Noir. In 2016, Chemo Noir was born — a growing 501c3 nonprofit organization. Based in Jacksonville, Florida, hosts wine centric events that raise money to provide financial support to the families, friends and fighters in their battle with cancer. Hear her amazing story and her commitment to win through paying it forward for families who need it. Dan Nevins is a soldier and war hero. In 2004, an explosion took the life of his dear friend and changed him forever while serving in Iraq. After losing his legs, he entered a two-year journey, 36 surgeries, learning to walk again and learned that the wounds of war are far greater than physical wounds. He remembers vividly being met at his bedside by an organization, Wounded Warrior Project — a nonprofit organization in Jacksonville, Florida, that poured hope into Dan in a way that he did not know at the time. During a time in 2013, Dan had eight weeks at home alone and struggled immensely. A friend introduced him to meditation and ultimately, the physical practice of yoga. Quick to say he laughed at the idea and struggled through it, Dan had physical and mental breakthroughs unlike anything he's ever experienced because of yoga practice. Today, he believes in the healing and restoration that yoga and meditation provide anyone suffering; and particularly vets. He speaks his truth, "bring a vet to yoga; you might just save his life," every chance he gets. Now, as an internationally recognized speaker and yoga teacher, Dan shares today what's most important. His life as a dad, soon-to-be husband, working on his vision for his wedding day, what he wants and coming home to claim these things has him present and awake to what matters right now. Heartfelt and inspiring, Dan lives a life of service and shares in this episode what it's like to look downstream and take action from creating and managing your own life. In this conversation you'll hear:What happens when you forgive and look forwardWhy choice brings us to repeat the past or create the futureWhat a life of joy can be in the midst of challengesWhat results from listening, patience, and loveHow our story is always unfolding. Mal Washington is a cool guy. A real estate investor, entrepreneur, husband, father, philanthropist, pro athlete, business owner, olympian, and Wimbledon finalist, he started tennis at the age of 5 and became a 2-time all American and finished his sophomore year at the University of Michigan ranked as the NCAA #1 tennis player in the nation. Over a career that spanned 10 years, he won four career titles while reaching a total of 13 finals. He reached a career high #11 in the world in singles in 1992, 1993, and 1996; and in 1996, he reached the Wimbledon championship final becoming the first African American man to reach a grand slam singles final since 1975. He remains one of only two African American men to achieve this. A member of the US Olympic Team and US Davis Cup Team, Mal suffered a knee injury during his final Davis Cup appearance in 1997; following two knee surgeries, he retired in 1999. He shares in this episode his love for the greatest sport — tennis. But his voice now stands solidly in what to do with what you've been given. He's giving back through his Foundation, The Mal Washington Foundation, located in the urban core, Durkeeville neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. Now, this 25-year-old non-profit organization provides after school homework assistance and life skills programs to kids; and it all started simply to show kids the game of tennis who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. In 2020, after completion of a $5 million capital campaign, the Foundation opened a brand new state of the art Club 904 Teen Center to serve for decades to come. In this second part of the two-part series, Lindsay Hoyt takes us inside her vision — from building a school to what happens now inside the classroom. Finding the right people, building a team, and unlearning have been part of the valuable process in creating the classical education classroom and teacher. Lindsay shares what the learning curve has been for the teacher of Cornerstone, the differences between this type of teaching and other schools and what's most important — the beautiful impact on the children. The school's motto is: Learn the truth. Do the good. Love the beautiful. This is spoken daily in the classroom along with the Pledge of Allegiance. Cornerstone Classical Academy is now in its second year of operation and increased enrollment from last year's K-6th grade to K-7th this year with 646 students in total. It is publicly funded and expanding to 12th grade with a vision for a total of 1200 students when this happens. Lindsay shares today what's next — a gymnasium that would serve as a hub for student life; theatre, gatherings, sports, and pep rallies. Lindsay is up to ongoing big things for the next generation to experience a space where students love learning, think for themselves and understand big questions — not just the right answers. Making a difference — for her own kids, but also for all children — was her calling. And she stopped at nothing. Her vision — a tuition-free, classical education for children providing a school for deep learning and an option that didn't exist became a reality in 2020. In this first episode of our two-part series, Lindsay shares the start, laying the foundation, the challenges, and the miracles that brought Cornerstone Classical Academy into existence. Ask Bri O'Shea what it takes to create beauty sustainably. She knows how. Fashion was her calling. Her dreams of being a fashion designer started as a little girl.Today, as the designer and founder of Label B swimwear, she's creating what is appropriately described as swimwear that doesn't suck for the planet. In the US alone, 99% of clothing thrown away can be recycled and 85% ends up in landfills. She shares what led her to do things differently; how to be in the process of shifting from corporate to personalized and enjoy it all and the importance of leaving past employers on good terms. When Leslie's youngest daughter, Lanier, was almost two years old, she noticed distinct developmental and emotional changes. Lanier drastically shifted from normal function and growth into a space where Leslie knew something wasn't right. After months of chasing doctors, experiencing severe emotions and breakdowns in Lanier, and finally getting the attention needed, Lanier was diagnosed with autism — a diagnosis at the time that didn't have a lot of research or clarity behind it. So, Leslie became the woman who found it. She used her voice, her hands, her feet, her heart and her faith to be guided into something bigger. The HEAL Foundation was created as a result of Leslie knowing that all families of autism needed support. She knew she had received the Light; and she wanted to give it to others. First, she put her attention on camps and classroom financial support for autistic kids. And then incredible fundraisers and galas, inviting celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and thousands of guests through the years. Fundraising has allowed the purchase of hundreds of iPads to support autistic children in unlocking their voices. Now, Lanier at age 23, is capable of ‘speaking' through her iPad and does so with profound intelligence and wisdom. The documentary, Unlocked by Henry Corra, will feature Lanier's story and will be released next year. This is Leslie's extraordinary story of faith and perseverance — and her greatest joy of creating and serving through HEAL. Full of life and full of vision when most would consider wrapping up a career, Katherine Way was just getting started. In her mid-fifties, she needed a dress and couldn't find anything. The challenge came from her husband to make it herself; and thus began the quest for every woman to have a Katherine Way dress in her closet. Imagine a dress that fits (and looks great!) for all sized-women. Simplicity of care, made-in-the-USA, and SPF sun protection built into the fabric increase the feel-good factor. Colors and patterns that enliven and brighten every face. And a confidence that washes over the minute the woman and dress meet. The beauty that is seen in Katherine's designs is inspiring — but saying yes to adventure, building something to make women feel and look great, and doing so while remaining poised and trusting the process is the real story. Katherine's flagship shop is in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and her fashion treasures can be found online and throughout golfing and specialty boutiques nationwide. Although not an expert — just ask my kids — I am a dedicated parent of two teens; and I love what parenting teaches me daily. In this episode, I talk about the most under-practiced skill in parenting — listening. Just by bringing this into the spaces and interactions with my kids, connection fills the room and our relationship deepens. My top 10 simple summer additions to the home work (almost) every time to stir conversations and I can't wait for you to try them in your own home. TF Jenkins shares the top three values in most individuals: faith, family, and finance. What you put first shapes your whole life. Starting a family in Seattle and choosing to move back to his hometown of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida has given him a perspective of taking risks while trusting something bigger. His creativity in his profession as a wealth advisor is a choice — from the office he's made as a home away from home to his attention to detail with every client. His love for family is shared through encouraging his kids to try new things alongside him. And he shares that this is the most important thing for kids to experience — seeing their parents try something new first. His eloquent voice and calm demeanor are lovely to experience and are qualities he holds in success and under pressure. The relationship we share comes through our conversation. I'm so proud to call him my husband; and he really is the example of living a life of creative abundance. In this conversation, you'll hear:How work is artWhy your kids need to see you trying new things firstHow trying new things is the key to lifeWhat drives every person (in some way and in some order)What a shared vision with your partner can causeResources:One Creative Act's Instagram: @onecreativeactMary Lyn Jenkins' Instagram: @marylynbigfishBig Fish Co.'s Instagram: @livebigfish Big Fish Co.'s Website: https://livebigfish.com/TF Jenkins' Website: https://www.rivergrasswm.com/Starr Sanford's Website: https://www.starrsanford.com/Starr Sanford's Instagram: @starrsanforddesign Tacolu's Website: https://www.tacolu.com/Emerald Trail: https://www.groundworkjacksonville.org/emerald-trail/Church of Eleven 22's Website: https://www.coe22.com/
