This week, we dive into the Golden Age of Synthesizers, the period from the mid‑'70s to the mid‑'80s when synths became smaller, cheaper, and powerful enough to transform popular music forever. From early experimental machines that filled entire rooms, to the groundbreaking work of innovators like Bob Moog and Don Buchla, we trace how synthesizers moved from academic curiosity to pop‑culture force. Along the way, we hear key moments from artists who helped define the era: Wendy Carlos, Hot Butter, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, MGMT, and more. We explore how techno‑pop emerged alongside punk's DIY spirit. Our guides through this electronic frontier are Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), who were right at the center of the movement. They share insights into the gear, the sounds, and the creative mindset that shaped a generation of music, and still echoes through today's electronic and alternative scenes. From Autobahn to Electricity, from Mellotrons to MIDI, this is the story of how machines rewired music, and how the studio itself became an instrument. Learn more about your ad choices. In this second episode of our pirate series we explore the brutal realities of life during the Golden Age of Piracy and why so many sailors abandoned imperial service for outlaw life on the open sea. Far from romantic adventure, the Atlantic world of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was shaped by mercantilism, rigid trade monopolies, violent naval discipline, and extreme inequality. Mr. Palumbo examines how sailors endured disease, starvation wages, corruption, and harsh punishment aboard legal vessels, why piracy increasingly appeared to many as a rational alternative rather than simple criminality, and how pirate crews organized themselves through elected captains, profit-sharing systems, strict internal discipline, and survival contracts designed to align risk with reward. The episode also explores the blurry line between pirates and privateers, state-sponsored raiders legally authorized to attack enemy commerce revealing how governments themselves often encouraged maritime violence when it served imperial interests.

Egyptian print media has historically functioned as a cultural barometer, shifting from the early official bulletins of the 20th century into a relentless and aggressive form of capitalism on steroids. Professor Bahia Shehab discusses her book, "A Trade in Dreams: A Century of Egyptian Print Advertising", unpacking how visual culture has been both a witness to and a victim of political upheaval. Her research illuminates a century where advertising functioned as legalized psychological operations, deeply embedded in the daily life of Cairo. By dissecting the visual language of the past, she provides a necessary framework for understanding the mono-culture and flattening of aesthetic diversity in the modern era.   00:00 Introduction 01:32 Invention of the Egyptian Press 04:00 The Business Model of Early Advertising 05:50 Motivations for Researching Advertising History 08:20 Discoveries in Beauty Standards and Race 09:55 Sequential Chronology and Political Tectonic Shifts 12:13 Napoleon, Egyptomania, and Early Visual Communication 17:14 1920s–1940s: Agriculture and the Tobacco Export Industry 20:00 Professionalization and Multinational Ad Agencies 22:31 Hybrid Aesthetics: International vs. Local Design 27:21 The Nasser Era: Socialism and Nationalized Media 30:57 The Sadat Era: Peace Treaties and the Open Door Policy 32:33 Influential Figures and the Silencing of Female Voices 37:01 Domination of the Soap Industry 48:58 The 1940s: The Golden Age of Egyptian Advertising 57:04 Egypt's Leading Role in Regional Advertising 59:08 Book Tour and Future Perspectives   Bahia Shehab is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, political activist and historian whose work focuses on the interaction and intersection of modern identity and ancient cultural heritage. Her imaginative combination of calligraphy and Islamic art history produced cutting edge, beautiful, impactful street art during the Arab Spring and continues to inform her work as an educator and designer. Having always been concerned with identity and preserving cultural heritage, she investigates art history to reinterpret contemporary Arab politics, feminist discourse and social issues. Her culturally oriented work enables her to use history as a means to better understand the present and find solutions for the future. She believes that art may be employed for the purposes of social change and has explored this phenomenon through her artwork, which focuses on socially charged themes such as the Arab identity and women's rights. Her research is largely concerned with understanding the Arabic letters and has been preoccupied with Arabic calligraphy in much of her work. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions around the world and she has received several awards and recognition for her achievements.   Connect with Bahia Shehab

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when a family scrapbook opens a door into a forgotten chapter of aviation history?Author Cindy Weigand never intended to become a historian of women in aviation. While sorting through her late mother's belongings, she discovered scrapbooks and newspaper clippings connected to her great-uncle Jack, a barnstormer of the 1920s. What began as a family history project soon became a deep dive into the remarkable women pilots who shared the skies during aviation's Golden Age. In this conversation, Cindy and I discuss her novel Mavis Perkins: Flying Journalist, a work of historical fiction inspired by the real women aviators of the 1920s. Together we explore the world of barnstormers, air races, flying clubs, Billy Mitchell's controversial warnings about air power, and the women who flew alongside Amelia Earhart whose stories are rarely told today. The conversation also touches on Cindy's earlier work documenting Texas women who served during World War II, the challenges of historical research, self-publishing, and her efforts to adapt these stories for film.If this history piques your interest, you might enjoy my Aviatrix Classics discussions with Dr. Jacque Boyd and Captain Jenny Beatty. Growing a Business Without Losing What Makes It Special | Golden Age Wine In this episode of The Localist, Carrie Rollwagen sits down with Brandon Loper and Trent Stewart, co-owners of Golden Age Wine in Birmingham. Last time Brandon and Trent were on the podcast, it was during the pandemic. A lot has changed since then. They still have their original Mountain Brook location, but they also have Golden Age Wine Garden downtown, a national wine club and their own importing company called Vins de Lieu. Brandon and Trent talk about why they chose to scale through importing instead of opening more locations, how they think about pop-ups with local chefs, what makes Birmingham's small business community so supportive, why they hire for hospitality first and wine knowledge second, and how they keep both shops feeling personal even as the business grows. If you own a small business and you have ever wondered what it looks like to grow without losing what makes you special, this conversation is full of honest answers. Clinical innovation in orthodontics is moving faster than ever, but many practices are still relying on workflows built for a different era. In this episode of The Golden Age of Orthodontics, Dr. Leon Klempner and Amy Epstein sit down with Jake Gulick, president of GreyFinch, to discuss how outdated systems, disconnected tools, and manual processes may be quietly limiting practice efficiency and growth.Jake shares his perspective from nearly two decades in the orthodontic technology space, from helping scale Cloud9Ortho in its early years to leading innovation at GreyFinch, and explains how modern cloud-based practice management systems, AI-assisted workflows, automation, and smarter integrations are reshaping the operational side of orthodontics. The conversation explores how practices can reduce workflow friction, improve patient communication, gain better visibility into marketing performance, and rethink long-standing processes that no longer serve today's digital orthodontic practice. In this episode, you'll learn:Why many orthodontic practices are still operating with outdated workflow modelsHow AI can improve efficiency without replacing the human side of the practiceThe difference between cloud-based and truly browser-based softwareHow automation can streamline patient follow-up and case acceptanceWhy disconnected systems create hidden operational frictionThe importance of workflow design when implementing new technologyHow practices can better track marketing performance and patient conversion dataWhy practice management software should evolve alongside modern orthodonticsGo to www.pplpractice.com for more!

A candid, no-holds-barred memoir in which Hollywood icon Mamie Van Doren busts myths, settles old scores, and unveils untold stories from a life lived at the glittering and gritty edges of the Golden Age.You Thought I Was Dead is Mamie Van Doren as you've never seen her: unguarded, unapologetic, and gloriously unfiltered. From a South Dakota farm to Hollywood soundstages, Mamie's life has been anything but ordinary. In this tell-all memoir, the platinum-blonde legend shatters the polished myths of Old Hollywood, sharing the wild, poignant, and often shocking truths behind the glamour. She takes you inside the studios, onto the sets, and behind closed doors with movie idols, music legends, and power brokers-from Clark Gable and Tony Curtis to Howard Hughes and Quincy Jones. With her trademark wit and candor, Mamie recounts friendships and feuds, headline-making romances, brushes with danger, and the fierce independence that kept her career and spirit alive long after the credits rolled. Alongside the dazzling stories are moments of raw honesty about the loneliness, loss, and resilience that shaped the woman behind the bombshell image.llustrated with original cartoons by acclaimed artist Stephen B. Whatley, You Thought I Was Dead is part memoir, part Hollywood history, and wholly Mamie-bold, sexy, defiant, and unforgettable.Whether you're a devotee of the Golden Age, a rock and roll nostalgist, or simply a lover of great, unvarnished storytelling, this is more than a memoir-it's a front-row seat to a life lived without a script.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

In the early nineteenth century, engineers discovered that steam power and iron rails could be combined to move people and goods faster than any horse or ox could. Within a few decades, railways had spread across every continent. Cities were reorganised around stations, clocks were synchronised, leisure and luxury were redefined, and entire economies began to run according to railway timetables. This was the Golden Age of the railways — a period when steam and steel transformed landscapes and fundamentally altered the way the world worked.  But how did a strange experimental machine become the backbone of modern life? How did railways reshape everything from holidays, to warfare, to time itself? And why, long after the steam age ended, does so much of modern life still run on railway logic? This is a Short History Of the Golden Age of Railways. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins.
