In this episode of  the Green Life, we are diving into Lifestyle Medicine with a doctor who embodies it fully: Dr Michael Klaper. A rich conversation on topics that are sometimes source of confusion and can be not only simple to grasp but apply too! Dr. Klaper resolutely believes that proper nutrition — through a whole food, plant-based diet — and a balanced lifestyle are essential for health and, in many cases, can make the difference between healing an illness or merely treating its symptoms.Dr. Michael Klaper is a gifted clinician, internationally-recognized teacher, and sought-after speaker on diet and health. In addition to his clinical practice and private consultations with patients, he is a passionate and devoted educator of physicians and other healthcare professionals about the importance of nutrition in clinical practice and integrative medicine. Dr. Klaper is the author of Vegan Nutrition, and has produced numerous health videos, webinars and dozens of articles for both scientific journals and the popular press. As a source of inspiration advocating plant-based diets and the end of animal cruelty worldwide, Dr. Klaper contributed to the making of two PBS television programs, Food for Thought and the award-winning movie, Diet for a New America (based on the book of the same name). Dr. Klaper teaches that “Health Comes From Healthy Living” and he is dedicated to the healing and flourishing of all living beings and our planet.Dr. Michael Klaper graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. As his medical career progressed, Dr. Klaper began to realize (true to what science is bearing out today) that many of the diseases his patients presented – clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure (hypertension), obesity, adult-onset diabetes and even some forms of arthritis, asthma, and other significant illnesses – were made worse or actually caused by the high sugar, high fat, high salt, overly processed, animal product-based, Standard American Diet (S.A.D.).Dr. Klaper served as Director of the Institute of Nutrition Education and Research from 1992 through 2015, where he conducted a study that focused on people who ate a completely plant-based or vegan diet. Dr. Klaper practiced acute care medicine in New Zealand for three years and from 2009 through 2018, served on staff at the TrueNorth Health Center, North America's premier nutritionally-based medical clinic that specializes in therapeutic fasting and health improvement through a whole food, plant-based diet.A member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Klaper was a member of the American Medical Student Association's Nutrition Task Force and currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Plantrician Project and the "International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention." For over 10 years, Dr. Klaper hosted a popular medical information radio program “Sounds of Healing” on WPFW in Washington, DC and KAOI on Maui, Hawaii. Dr Gabriel Niles, MD has travelled many roads in his search for the ideal model of healing and flourishing. Prior to his training as a Medical Doctor at USC School of Medicine, he studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, China. He has organized and led multiple Circle of Healers retreats with the American Medical Student Association as a medical student, seeking to integrate the wisdom of healing traditions with modern medical science. In recent years, Dr Niles has been integrating the insights and benefits of Functional Medicine into his medical practice while remaining committed to keeping medical care affordable for his patients.  For this podcast, I caught up with Gabe after the Ancestral Health Symposium in Los Angeles to discuss his integration of Functional Medicine into a mainstream bill-to-insurance medical practice. We talk about areas where his approach differs from that of other family physicians, including his favouring of lifestyle changes over-reliance on pharmaceuticals. A nutrition-based medical clinic specializing in therapeutic fasting and health improvement through a whole-food, plant-based diet, TrueNorth is renowned for successfully navigating people to better well-being through non-intervention lifestyle protocols. In addition, Dr. Klaper served as an advisor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) project on nutrition for long-term space colonists on the moon and Mars. He was also a member of the Nutrition Task Force of the American Medical Student Association and served as the Director of the non-profit Institute of Nutrition Education and Research.Diet is key to reversing many of the most feared degenerative diseases known to medicine. And yet, applied nutrition is not typically integral to medical school curriculums. To solve this problem, Dr. Klaper partnered with PlantPure Communities to form Moving Medicine Forward, a medical school nutrition education initiative designed to change the way future doctors treat their patients through improved nutrition and lifestyle education. The most important work of his career, Dr. Klaper lectures at medical schools nationwide, educating students on using plant-predominant nutrition and positive lifestyle changes to truly heal their patients -- and ultimately improve the health of future generations.Early in his career, Dr. Klaper realized that many of the diseases his patients brought to his office were made worse, or actually caused by the high-fat, high sugar, overly processed Standard American Diet. When he began treating his patients not with pharmaceuticals and surgical interventions but instead with diet and lifestyle protocols -- specifically a whole-food, plant-based diet and active lifestyle -- he started getting unprecedented results.Over time, he observed his patients miraculously reverse a litany of chronic ailments, including atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, hypertension, obesity, adult onset diabetes, and even some forms of arthritis, asthma, and autoimmune disease.Today Dr. Klaper shares his wisdom and experience, picking up where we left off in our first podcast conversation, published six years ago to the day (RRP #77).We discuss his mission to help empower the next generation of doctors to better heal their patients. And we explore his dream of eradicating the chronic lifestyle epidemics that unnecessarily afflict millions of people every single year. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. The most energetic and youthful 72-year old I've ever met, I aspire to this beautiful and gentle man's enthusiasm for life and commitment to service.Note: Taped in late January, today's episode is one of many (14 total) conversations I recorded pre-pandemic. My current intention is to continue releasing such episodes in accordance with my regular schedule. However, I will also be publishing supplemental mid-week episodes to address our current unique situation contemporaneously.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange. In the meantime, stay safe everyone. Connect With Today's guest: Dr. Michael Klaper Website: www.DoctorKlaper.com On Twitter On Facebook On LinkedIn IN THIS EPISODE: On this episode, I'm talking again with Dr. Michael Klaper. He's such a generous guy and knows a ton about the medical practice of water fasting. Many people are afraid of fasting. They think it's unsafe and bad for your body. But the truth is that it's only been in the most modern era that humanity has had the luxury of eating as much as we do now. Our ancestors HAD to fast and it was actually good for them. And look what's happened as a result of our modern ways: we've gotten fat, lazy, and sick. Fasting is clearly not harmful. Water fasting is an amazing way to cleanse the body of toxins and reset its ability to regulate good health. More and more research is coming out every day about the benefits that come from a prolonged state of fasting. Dr. Michael Klaper is my guest today because I wanted to know more about the benefits of water fasting - and you know that I wanted to share it with you, too, right? Did you know that water fasting can be used to cure many of the maladies that beset our culture these days? Diabetes, high blood pressure, bowel issues, even some depressive conditions can be cured - yes, entirely cured - using a carefully supervised regimen that includes water fasting. Dr. Klaper's clinic in southern California specializes in helping people get the help they need through fasting, at very affordable rates. If you find yourself in a state of ill health without making much progress in the hands of conventional medicine, you need to reach out to Dr. Klaper to find out if water fasting under his care would be a way you could address your issues. On this episode I asked Dr. Klaper to share how people could get in touch with him or become a patient in his clinic, so be sure you listen to get all the details. Can fasting be used for weight loss? Yes - but no. You will likely lose weight when doing a water fast but the purpose of fasting is not for weight loss, it's for better health. If you approach fasting just to lose weight you're not addressing the real issue - the dietary habits you practice every day. On this episode, Dr. Klaper makes that distinction very clear and advises you how to think about weight loss as it related to fasting so that you can not only get healthy by fasting but also think about it in a healthy way, too. Remember? “Milk, it does a body good!” But is that true? My guest today is an expert in the field and has discovered just how much we've been lied to over the years. Not only is dairy NOT good for us, it actually causes much of the sickness we see in the world today. Dr. Klaper is someone I've wanted to have on my show for quite a while because he comes from a dairy industry background, having worked on his grandfather's dairy farm as a boy. He knows how brainwashed everyone in the industry is because he was once in the same shoes. He also knows how we as consumers have been led to believe the exact opposite of what is true. Not only that, he's got the experience as a physician to see the real life changes that happen when his patients get off dairy entirely. One of the things Dr. Klaper says about his medical practice is that he's one of the happiest doctors he knows. That's because he is constantly seeing his patients get well. The non-dairy recommendations he makes bring dramatic changes to all kinds of chronic conditions almost immediately. He's convinced how poisonous dairy is to the human body because he's seen the results of removing it from the diet. If you want to know what you can do to help wean our country off the poisons that exist naturally in dairy products it starts with you. You've got to commit yourself to getting off all dairy products for the sake of your own health first. While you're doing that you'll be sending a financial message to the dairy industry that won't believe their propaganda and lies anymore. There's nothing like a drop income to get somebody's attention. And the dairy industry needs that kind of wake-up call. It's been far too long that we've been lied to and deceived into eating something that does an enormous amount of harm to our bodies. Will you be one of the people who makes a difference? It can be hard to change dietary habits but for your own health and the health of those you love, it's worth the sacrifice. And you'll discover a whole new world of great tasting foods out there in the process. Outline Of This Great Episode [2:00] My welcome and introduction to this episode of the podcast.
