Ah, the bizarre love/hate life of the New Order fan. What's your most loved and least favorite song on Low-Life?! For our fourth Request Episode Election, we went through dozens of listener suggestions to nominate Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual and this 1985 Manchester classic, which won in a landslide election. While half of us moaned about the album choice from our mystery nominators (MIA), we all had lots of great memories to share of adoring and rolling our eyes at NO. Superfan Sam hosted and held up lots of New Order vinyl, old tshirts were dusted off and Adam delivered an avalanche of guest rankers, starting with internationally-loved San Diego superstars Koi Division, who donned their iconic fish heads for a filmed interview. Days later, he visited Gold Diggers Sound in Los Angeles to chat with Dave Trumfio of the synth-lovin' Pulsars, whose lone 1997 debut/farewell album has finally recently been reissued. The two full interviews will be on our Youtube channel. Just you wait. In addition to getting tribute band opinions from San Francisco's Temptation and San Diego's Thieves Like Us (Substance responded too late to have their support for "Sunrise" be included), he got first hand accounts of 91X FM's infamous 1985 year-end countdown switcheroo from DJs Dwight Arnold, Pam Wolf and Billy Bones. LA-based collective Beauty In Chaos release their fourth long-play record 'Dancing With Angels' on July 24 via 33.3 Music Collective. Their fourth album cements BIC's legacy for crafting captivating and imagination-stirring music with eight diverse, riveting tracks on offer. BIC has also just unveiled the video for 'Holy Ground', a lush offering featuring Patrik Mata of seminal darkwave band Kommunity FK, Beauty In Chaos was formed in 2018 by guitarist Michael Ciravolo (formerly of Human Drama and Gene Loves Jezebel and currently President of Schecter Guitars) with Grammy nominated producer Michael Rozon (Ministry) as a revolving evolving sonic entity. To date, Beauty In Chaos has involved numerous music luminaries, including members of The Cure, Ministry, Cheap Trick, The Offspring, Gene Loves Jezebel, Marilyn Manson, Human Drama, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Van Halen, A Flock of Seagulls, dUg Pinnick (Kings X), ICE-T, guitar icon Zakk Wylde, Rolan Bolan, and many others. "The title was inspired by a painting from a talented German artist Maren Platzhoff, which also became the album's cover. As Michael Rozon and I began writing the music for this release, I knew I wanted to blend artists from our first two releases with some amazing new members to our BIC family," says Michael Ciravolo. This eight song release features BIC alumni Ashton Nyte, Holy Wars firecracker Kat Leon, and both Wayne and Cinthya Hussey. Ciravolo shares “I love bringing in ‘less famous' but certainly no less talented artists to the fold, and I think this album does just that”. Leo Luganskiy, Julian Shah-Tayler, former Silence In The Snow frontwoman Cynthia Isabella, The Bellwether Syndicate's William and Sarah Faith, and Patrik Mata (main-man of seminal darkwave band Kommunity FK) bring immense and diverse talents to “Dancing With Angels”. Ciravolo describes this album as sort of a "sonic regression and a sonic progression", noting “I meant this as a positive thing, taking some of the post-rock elements of our debut album, the stark dark bits that run through ‘The Storm Before The Calm' and the gothy dreamy-gaze of 'Behind The Veil'. It was definitely going a bit backwards to take a few steps forward!”

TRACKLIST: 01 - The Woodentops - Give It Time (Adrian Sherwood Mix) 02 - Simple Minds - Someone Somewhere In Summertime (Extended) 03 - The Mission - Tower of Strength (Bombay Mix Edit) 04 - The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon 05 - Fiction Factory - (Feels Like) Heaven (12inch Version) 06 - Gene Loves Jezebel - The Motion of Love (Jezebel Mix) 07 - Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter (New Extended Version) 08 - The Bolshoi - A Way (Un-Edited Version - Live Length) 09 - The Psychedelic Furs - Heartbreak Beat (Extended Mix) 10 - U2 - The Unforgettable Fire 11 - The Cure - Lovesong (Extended Mix) 12 - Peter Murphy - Indigo Eyes (Single Edit) 13 - Echo & The Bunnymen - The Game

TRACKLIST: 01 - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust (12'' Eruption Mix) 02 - The Cult - (Here Comes The) Rain 03 - Echo & The Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar (Maxi Mix) 04 - Gene Loves Jezebel - Desire (12" Remix) 05 - The Bolshoi - Please (12' Single Mix) 06 - The Sisters Of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection (Extended Remix) 07 - The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (Berlin Mix) 08 - The Lords Of The New Church - Dance With Me 09 - Peter Murphy - All Night Long (Single Edit) 10 - The Mission - Wasteland (Anniversary Mix) 11 - Iggy Pop - Cry For Love (Extended Dance Version) 12 - U2 - Two Hearts Beat as One (Club Version) 13 - The Cure - A Forest

Towards the end of the 1980's, young people had become increasingly frustrated in England because of the effect of Thatcherism. For young lads up in Manchester, the music scene didn't reflect their own tastes and they were far removed from fashion and trends down in London. They began to form bands with a basic guitar-bass-drums setup and began playing a more garage rock style music and openly displayed their favorite 1960's influences like The Beatles, The Byrds and The early Rolling Stones records. The new bands became influenced by current bands of the time like Jesus & The Mary Chain, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Smiths and others. At the same time, Raves and "Acid House" music were started to be a regular occurrence throughout Britain and a new age of Psychedelia began. The Stone Roses were the first Mersey band to gain public notice and they were soon followed by The Charlatans. These bands helped to initiate a new movement and influenced the coming of bands like Oasis. Episode 158: The 80's alternative music festival Cruel World is this weekend in Pasadena, and although Joe and Kari will not be attending (cruel world, indeed), they thought that discussing a bunch of the acts that will be performing would be the next best thing! Put on some heavy eyeliner and listen in as they discuss acts like Berlin, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Church, and Echo and the Bunnymen.
It's been unusually dark, cold, and grey here in Atlanta, GA for the past few days, so the boys thought it best to bring on a guest who is an authority on all things grim and ghastly. They donned all-black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops and welcomed Mr. Brent Zius and his coffin full of goodies to the firehouse. Brent schools us on the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…What is it we do here at InObscuria? In most shows Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week is different as our guest, Brent Zius, provides the playlist for your 2 rock n' roll grave robbers to react to. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Don't forget to check out Brent's latest project album: Angelspit Vs. We talk to Jay Aston - Singer songwriter for the band Gene Loves Jezebel who rose to fame during the mid to late 80s with hits such as 'Desire' and 'Motion of Love'. The original band featured identical twin brothers, Jay and Michael, and would be embraced by the USA which, as we learn would be a far cry from their upbringing in South Wales. We hear of how after returning from a hitch hiking trip around the UK and Europe at the turn of the 1980s, the young Jay Aston would put wheels in motion to form a rock band which would see him arrive in London and eventually a record deal would bring Gene Loves Jezebel over to the USA and a relationship with a country that would forever change them. This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee. https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

We don't normally cover new bands on the Hustle, but we're making a special exception this time. Beauty in Chaos is the brainchild of musician Michael Ciravolo. Michael is steeped in the dark goth rock of the 80s, bands like the Cure, the Mission, Gene Loves Jezebel (who he also played with). He's taken that and released two great albums (as well as two remix albums), but what's amazing is who he's gotten to appear on these albums. Here's a list - Robin Zander, Michael Anthony, Simon Gallup, Ice T, Michael Aston, Al Jourgensen, Dug Pinnick and several former guests like Wayne Hussey, Tim Palmer and John Fryer. It's a collection of musicians you won't see anywhere else. Hear from Michael how he made all this happen and how he intends to move forward. www.beautyinchaosmusic.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

In the 80s Jay Aston launched into the flamboyant eccelctic glam band "Gene Loves Jezebel" with his twin bother Michael Aston. They broke into the music world with so many unconventional stories that his whole careear does not really fit any paradigm of an artist. I have seen him many times over the last 30+ years as Gene Loves Jezebel was actually the first artist I ever saw perform live. Still going strong with his performances *(When he could), one of the more interesting carachters in music. genelovesjezebel.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/OfficialGeneLovesJezebel https://genelovesjezebelwithjayaston.bandcamp.com/releases https://twitter.com/geneluvsjezebel
It's 2021! But not for your intrepid We Dig Music crew. We've stolen Doc Emmet Brown's DMC DeLorean and gone back to 1985 where we've been riding around in Sinclair C5's, wearing ridiculous baggy suits, and watching Live Aid on telly. We've also been talking about songs that sound like Adam Ant at the wrong speed, Guitars that sound like pointy spiders, & Electro classics performed in sadly missed Birmingham toy shops. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - A-Ha!, Anthrax, Beat Happening, Kate Bush, Celtic Frost, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, The Cult, The Cure, The Dream Academy, Everything But The Girl, Foreigner, Gene Loves Jezebel, Paul Hardcastle, Hüsker Dü, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Howard Jones, Killing Joke, Kino, Cyndi Lauper, Mental As Anything, Prefab Sprout, Prince, R.E.M., Saint Vitus, Skinny Puppy, The Smiths, S.O.D., Sonic Youth, Suzanne Vega & Tom Waits Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Mr106Uvvpqzt0p3nbBcvU?si=ztbbIDHNT4-yfL1l5Luskw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. This week we will look at 80's bands that have siblings in them. The goal for the month of November is to look for threads and themes of thankfulness. Bands with siblings have been happening since the beginning of organized music. The harmonies, creativity, synergy, and camaraderie are an essential part of the song writing process. I will attempt to provide insight into the sibling relationship, the band origin, and I will look to introduce in some instances some deeper cuts, when possible giving you you a deeper dive into some of you favorite bands from the 80's. Bands Covered Include: The Bangles, Felony, The B52's, Cowboy Junkies, The Del Fuegos, Devo, Flock of Seagulls, Gene Loves Jezebel, INXS, Jesus and the Mary Chain, The Meat Puppets, Men Without Hats, The Psychedelic Furs, Spit Endz, Crowded House, UB40, The Replacements, and the Ramones (Crandall's Crucial Cut)

Tim Palmer special - discussing The Mission, David Bowie, Pearl Jam & much more - with David Eastaugh Palmer started his career in London. In the early 1980s, Palmer was an assistant engineer at Utopia Studios in London where he worked with musicians such as Mark Knopflerand Dead or Alive. By age 21, he had his first number one single, mixing "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" (1986) for Cutting Crew. In the latter half of the 1980s, Palmer became a producer, and his ears and technical knowledge contributed to groups such as the Mighty Lemon Drops, The Mission, with whom he worked for several years, and Gene Loves Jezebel. In 1988, Palmer produced Now and Zen for rock singer Robert Plant (Top 10 U.S. album) as well as Tin Machine, David Bowie's debut LP with Tin Machine in 1989.
After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!
An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Our Luvva Cover, this week, was of a massive international hit in the 60's - the first ever hit for a black all-female singing group (The Shirelles). It's a beautiful song, written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, and the cover version is taken from a 2019 compilation album of covers, all by female artists and of songs originally by female artists, called 'Turn Her Up'. It was designed to raise awareness of the massive under-representation of women at all levels of the music industry. The cover version is really interesting and is by Lizzie Loveless. We also had special permission to play a 2020 version of a song by The Mission called Tower of Strength. This has been recorded by The Mission, together with members of The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Banshees, Slow Dive, Bauhaus, Midge Ure, Gary Numan and others. Gene Loves Jezebel special with Michael Aston in conversation with David Eastaugh Originally called Slav Aryan, Gene Loves Jezebel was formed in 1980 with the Aston brothers, guitarist Ian Hudson, bassist Stephen Davis and drummer Snowy White. The Astons grew up in Cornelly, and later Porthcawl, in Wales, and moved to London in 1981. With a new home, and shortly afterwards, the new name, the trio, with bassist Julianne Regan and drummer James Chater (later replaced by John Murphy (the Associates and Richard Hawkins), played several live shows and were signed by Situation Two. Gene Loves Jezebel underwent numerous lineup changes between 1981 and 1985. In May 1982, Situation Two released Gene Loves Jezebel's demo and single, "Shaving My Neck". The band then added keyboardist Jean-Marc Lederman. Regan left the band within a year to form All About Eve, leaving Ian Hudson briefly playing bass and Albie DeLuca as the guitar player until Stephen Marshall joined. In 1983, the band released two more singles, "Screaming (For Emmalene)" and "Bruises", and then their first album, Promise , which peaked at number 8 in the UK Indie Chart. In 1984, the band recorded a John Peel radio session for the BBC and toured the U.K. with fellow Welsh artist John Cale. The band's second album, Immigrant, was released in mid-1985. However, at the start of a long American tour for Immigrant, founding member Ian Hudson left the band and was replaced by former Chelsea and Generation X guitarist James Stevenson (who later also played rhythm guitar on tour with the Cult).
Gene Loves Jezebel special with Jay Aston in conversation with David Eastaugh Gene Loves Jezebel (GLJ) are a British rock band formed in the early 1980s by identical twin brothers Jay and Michael Aston. Gene Loves Jezebel's best-known songs include "Heartache", "Desire (Come and Get It)" (1986), "The Motion of Love" (1987), "Jealous" (1990) and "Break the Chain" (1993), as well as alternative club hits "Bruises" (1983), "Influenza (Relapse)" (1984) and "The Cow" (1985). "The Motion of Love" was the band's most successful UK single.
This time around, Bushy was just getting irritated with social media, and the constant bashing of "fans" that like the "wrong bands". Gene Loves Jezebel personified the 80s. A strikingly garish style mixed with a perfected merge of goth and pop music that many 80s bands tried to nail and couldn't. Along the way, alternative radio gobbled up hits like "Desire," "The Motion of Love" and "Jealous." Unfortunately, rock history is riddled with brothers that can't get along and GLJ are no different. Twins Jay and Michael Aston have been feuding at various levels for 30 years to the point where Michael maintains the Gene Loves Jezebel name in the States, while Jay runs with it in the UK. In this conversation, Jay and I discuss what's at the heart of this squabbling, but also great stuff like his 2017 album Dance Underwater, what it means to have "riff master" James Stevenson in the band, and his current tour with Modern English and the Alarm. It's a messy, frustrating and often confusing musical history overwhelmed by sibling rivalry, but the music itself lives on and is as bright and excellent as ever. Enjoy! https://genelovesjezebel.co.uk/
Modern English will forever be known as the band that gave us "I Melt With You." Those guys achieved the miraculous feat of recording a song that has been embraced by every generation since it's release in 1982 (contrary to popular belief, the song was not actually a hit originally). In this entertaining conversation, frontman Robbie Grey discusses the spoils of a song that's evergreen and we discuss a lot of the band's output that gets overshadowed including their 2016 album Take Me To The Trees. Modern English are hitting the road this week with The Alarm and Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel, which is sure to be an incredible show. Get to know the guy behind the song! http://modernenglish.me
Steve Cooper talks with musician Robbie Grey. Robbie is best known for being lead singer for the band Modern English. Modern English formed in England in 1979. Their second album, After the Snow, contained the hit I Melt with You. That song charted in both the UK and USA and was featured in the 80's classic movie Valley Girl. The group disbanded in 1987, only to reform two years later and then disband after another two years. They reunited again in 1995 and have continued in various lineups since that time, with four fifths of the original lineup currently back in the band. They have released eight studio albums throughout their career and are currently on tour with The Alarm and Gene Loves Jezebel.
This Is Modern Rock: Alternative Rock Music of the 80's & 90's
Will Westercauw and Orly talk about songs that peaked on the Billboard Modern Rock charts in August 1990. Songs under discussion include "Jealous" by Gene Loves Jezebel, "I'll Be Your Chauffeur" by David J, "Home" by Iggy Pop, and "Post Post-Modern Man" by Devo.
Mike Peters has a lot going on. His band The Alarm have a brand new album called SIGMA dropping on June 28th and lead single "Blood Red Viral Black" is an indication that the band is as fiery and powerful as ever. They are also kicking off a North American tour in July with Modern English and Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel. Plus he's still running his vital cancer organization the Love Hope Strength Foundation that finds bone marrow matches at Alarm concerts. And he was recently awarded an OBE by the Royal Family. Oh, and he's successfully fighting off cancer, as is his wife Jules. We discuss all of this as well as the prospect of a full Alarm reunion in this open and honest chat. Enjoy!
It's a classic two album format episode of We Have A Technical this week, with the Senior Staff discussing the glam goth of Gene Loves Jezebel and the minimalist dark ambient of m² (aka Squaremeter). There's also plenty of discussion regarding the new Threshold Archives set of Coil reissues, and all of the metaphysical questions related to Coil's posthumous legacy. We hope you wouldn't expect anything less from us at this point.

Gene Loves Jezebel were one of the most unique and infectious alternative acts of the 1980's, forging a unique mix of glam and goth resulting in memorable hits like 'The Motion of Love,' 'Desire,' 'Jealous,' 'Stephen,' and 'Twenty Killer Hurts'. The group fronted by Jay Aston (known in America as Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel for legal reasons--his twin brother and original co-founding member Michael Aston has his own band under the GLJ moniker in North America, but tours as Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel in Europe) are getting ready for their first North American tour in almost 10 years. On this week's episode I speak to Jay about why it's taken so long for the group to play the U.S., his thoughts on last year's well-received release 'Dance Underwater', what fans can expect as far as setlists, the 25th anniversary of their underrated album 'Heavenly Bodies' and more. *GLJ fans: check out my earlier podcast episode featuring guitarist James Stevenson: https://bit.ly/2KDC1C4. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support

UK’s Gene Loves Jezebel formed in the early 80’s and had their biggest success in the US with songs like 1986’s “Desire” and “Jealous,” which hit #1 on the Alternative charts in 1990.Now, the band is back with their first new record in 14 years, Dance Underwater, which contains a killer single, appropriate for the time, “Summertime.”We talk with Jay Aston about bringing the original lineup of the band back together for this new record, and working with David Bowie's producer, Tony Visconti. Plus, he sheds light on the difficulties of having his brother, Michael, tour with his own version of the band and the confusion that it causes fans of their music.
Steve Cooper talks with guitarist James Stevenson. James started his career with the London based punk band Chelsea in 1977 and joined Billy Idol in Generation X in 1980 around the time that band's "Dancing with Myself single was released. After Gen X he played with Kim Wilde and performed in all of Wilde's early videos including Kids in America and then formed Hot Club with former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock In 1985, he was asked to join post-punk band Gene Loves Jezebel and still plays with them today. In 1994 and 1995, he provided additional guitar playing for the Cult during their world tour and rejoined them in 2013 and 2014. In 2000 he became guitarist for The Alarm who he will be touring with the next few months. He has also been a member of The International Swingers, Holy Holy recorded a solo album.

Steve Cooper talks with musician Michael Aston. Michael Aston is the founding member, lead singer and leader of Gene Loves Jezebel. 1989 he left Gene Loves Jezebel due to his unhappiness with the direction of the band and strained relations with his twin brother, Jay. Moving to California, he started The Immigrants which eventually became Edith Grove. Edith Grove released its debut album to rave reviews and he eventually decided to tone things down a bit and he wrote and released his first solo album, Why Me Why This Why Now?. He reformed Gene Loves Jezebel instead of writing and recording a new Edith Grove album; the band's debut album was its only album. Between 1993 and 1997 Jay and him were working together on various projects and recordings, including an album that would eventually become VII. Both brothers did a reunion tour from February 1997 to October 1997 as Gene Loves Jezebel, however that ended with the recording and subsequent tour for VII. Another bitter falling out ensued. According to Michael, he refused to be pushed out of the band after all of the work he had put into the reunion and reformed GLJ with the backing band used on the first '97 Pre-Raphaelite Brothers tour. This caused much confusion amongst the fans as to who had the rights to the band name. Jay sued Michael to stop him from using Gene Loves Jezebel. Judge O'Brien in LA Superior Court denied twice the injunctions intended to stop Michael from using the Gene Loves Jezebel name. Jay withdrew the case with prejudice meaning that he could never sue Michael again. Jay released VII in 1998. Jay erased all of Michael's vocals and credits off the album however, a copy of this album with Michael's vocals was released as The Doghouse Sessions. Michael owns the exclusive rights to Gene Loves Jezebel in the US and continues to perform and release new material as Gene Loves jezebel throughout the world.
