Last week, one of their dear friends celebrated his 81st birthday, another friend had a brain tumor removed, and another friend died. So, you will forgive Dean and Phil if this isn't the most polished installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. It IS epic in length, and it is full of the heartfelt, the insightful, the irreverent and even the inspiring. Dean reveals that planning a home renovation a few months before getting married might have been a mistake. The winners of last night's awards get analyzed both for their historical context and for what they say about the art and commerce of motion pictures right now. Actors Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg, screenwriter and producer Roberto Orci, singers Robert John and David Johansen, and chess champion Boris Spassky get remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”.

Welcome to October 9, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a soft spot for wool and a warm spot in the Cold War.  In 1974, the sci-fi classic Doctor Who cast a new actor in the lead role. Costume designer James Acheson was given the task of creating a unique look for the Doctor. He thought the costume should have a scarf and he asked his friend Begonia Pope to knit one. Acheson dropped off several balls of yarn and went on his way. Begonia began knitting, and because she wasn't sure how long the scarf should be, she didn't stop until every last inch of yarn had been used. The result was a ridiculously long scarf that was about 18 feet long. This colorful accessory became the trademark look for Tom Baker's incarnation of Doctor Who. On I Love Yarn Day, express your own textile taste and don't be afraid to go over the top! During the Cold War, the Soviet Union seemed invincible at the game of chess. For decades, every single World Championship was won by a Soviet player. When an American named Bobby Fischer made it to the championships in 1972, the whole world was watching to see what would happen. Fischer lost the first two matches to the reigning champ Boris Spassky and it looked as if the Soviet streak would continue. Then Fischer staged one of the greatest comebacks in the history of competitive chess. His performance was so impressive that the crowd broke out into applause after his win. Even Spassky gave Fischer a standing ovation. On National Chess Day, celebrate the ultimate game of strategy that can still bring the world together.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. This is one of the many great historical chess interviews that I am posting on the Perpetual Chess Patreon page for those who donate $3.50 per month or more.  Fred WIlson's archive will also feature old interviews with GMs Andy Soltis, Arthur Bisguier, Maurice Ashley, Lubomir Kavalek and many more.  Here are a few of the questions that Fred asked of IM Dvoretsky in their conversation: Did Mark agree with GM Lev Alburt's suggestion that Boris Spassky had more chess talent than Bobby Fischer as a youth? How many positions did IM Dvoretsky have in his legendary file of positions for titled students to study? What were some of his favorite chess books of all time (besides his own)? What did he think of Peter Svidler's prospects of becoming World Champion in 2004? Was there any other young talent he thought might ascend to the highest title?  So much chess history is shared within this 90 minute conversation that it is difficult for me to do it justice in a summary.  Just listen and enjoy! The Perpetual chess t-shirt and hoodie sale ends on December 4- get one here while you can.

Sofa King Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2018 95:26

On this episode of The Sofa King Podcast, we take an in-depth look at the chess playing prodigy of Brooklyn, Bobby Fischer. Born to a single Jewish mother in Chicago, Bobby Fischer got his hands on his first chess board at the age of 6. By age 7 he knew that chess was his calling and he took to it like it was the very oxygen his body needed to survive. Neglecting childhood as well as his own sanity he became obsessed with every aspect of chess, from strategy to the history of it, he took the time to memorize and learn everything he could. When his mother took him to see a therapist, the therapist simply yawned and said, “Well, there are certainly worse things he could be into.” By the age of 15 Bobby Fischer became the youngest Grand Master in the USA and as his skills continued to grow, so did the countries hope of defeating the powerhouse of the chess world for 24 years running, the Soviet Union. In 1972 Bobby Fischer went to Iceland to compete and ultimately won against a formidable opponent in Boris Spassky, but only after Henry Kissinger personally called to encourage Fischer to go. The 20 years that followed would see Bobby Fischer slide out of the spotlight and into some pretty chaotic personal choices, from becoming a member of the Worldwide Church of God to collecting and obsessing over anti-Semitic literature and beliefs. To the point that he rejected his own Jewish heritage and chased away most of the people around him. In 1992 he re-emerged from obscurity to battle Boris once more in a chess match in Sveti Stefan and Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in spite of a United Nations embargo that included sanctions on commercial activities. The US Department of the Treasury warned Fischer before the start of the match that his participation was illegal, that it would violate President George H. W. Bush's Executive Order 12810 imposing United Nations Security Council Resolution 757 sanctions against engaging in economic activities in Yugoslavia. In response, during the first scheduled press conference on September 1, 1992, in front of the international press, Fischer spat on the US order, saying "this is my reply". His violation of the order led US Federal officials to initiate a warrant for his arrest upon completion of the match. After the match (which he won) Fischer took up residency in Hungary and settled in the Philippines. After the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2011 Fischer called in to a radio station in the Philippines and had some not so choice words about his feelings towards the USA and Israel which prompted George H.W. Bush to put out a call to Japan (where Fischer was trying to board a plane back to the Philippines and have him arrested and held. Fearing extradition to the US, Fischer wrote some desperate letters and called in a favor with Iceland and they ultimately made him a citizen. He spent his remaining years in Iceland, ranting and raving like a crazy person until ultimately he succumbed to a Urinary tract blockage and died. Only to be exhumed later for a DNA comparison that only showed that his supposed daughter from a previous marriage was not actually his.

Bobby Fischer Against The World is a new documentary about the rise and fall of the legendary American chess player and his 1972 match with Boris Spassky. The film explores Fischer’s rapid rise to national fame and the political significance of his clash with Spassky, which attracted global media coverage as a wider Cold War confrontation between America and Russia. It then delves into the later years of his life as he effectively retired at the peak of his career and became a wandering enigma, exiled from his own country, making controversial statements after 9/11, before eventually retreating to Iceland where he died in 2008. Directed by Liz Garbus, it premiered at Sundance earlier this year and mixes rare archive footage and photos with interviews from those close to Fischer as well as figures such as Gary Kasparov and Henry Kissinger. I recently spoke to Liz in London at the offices at Dogwoof, who are releasing the film in the UK on July 15th Find out more about the film at www.bobbyfischermovie.co.ukFile Download (0:00 min / 23 MB)
