Please donate to Aseel in Gaza here: https://chuffed.org/project/118973-save-aseels-family-from-genocide-in-gaza Guest: Sheila We're so back! First, a Sumerian poem about Gilgamesh which mentions his trip to see Ziusudra (also known as Atrahasis, Utnapishtim, and/or Noah), which some have interpreted as evidence for the kind of mass human sacrifice we see in these tombs. Then, the famous Royal Tombs of Ur, first excavated a century ago, with their famous treasures and aforementioned mass human sacrifice! For the first time, we're able to look at the royal family through the generations rather than dealing with isolated kings' names. We might even be able to identify some of their bodies, unlike their dozens of unlucky victims. Then, we look at several of the famous artifacts which these tombs produced: the Standard of Ur, the Royal Game of Ur, and several bull-head lyres, including the Great Lyre, along with other musical instruments. We finish up with a look at four tombs: Personal Grave (PG) 1236, possibly the early king Aya-Anzu; PG 1237 (or the Great Death Pit), possibly King Meskalamdu; PG 755, possibly a later member of the royal family also named Meskalamdu; and PG 800, tomb of the famous Pu-abi with her famous jewelry. Then: Gilgamesh, he of well-proportioned limbs, has lain down and is never to rise again! Sheila (who had just got back from visiting family in India when we recorded this way back in 2023) compares modern Hindu practices with the style of Sumerian oral performances like this one. It's that time of the year when many of us are at home with friends and family, losing track of time, eating leftovers, and, of course, playing games. This festive season, we look at the science of games and, of course, play some ourselves. It's presenter Marnie Chesterton versus producer Florian Bohr at Marnie's kitchen table.... Who will win the Inside Science games special?Irving Finkel from the British Museum tells Marnie about the Royal Game of Ur, one of the most ancient board games which is strikingly similar to more modern examples of race games. Also, why we play games with author and neuroscientist Kelly Clancy, and why we struggle to comprehend the randomness of dice with author Tim Clare. To finish it off, mathematician Marcus du Sautory explains the geometry behind the game Dobble and leaves listeners with a Christmas puzzle: Can you figure out the symbols on the two missing Dobble cards? If you think you've found the solution, please email insidescience@bbc.co.ukPresenter: Marnie Chesterton Producers: Florian Bohr Editor: Martin Smith Production Co-ordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth To discover more fascinating science content, head to bbc.co.uk search for BBC Inside Science and follow the links to The Open University.

Welcome to this special fiction episode of I'd Rather Be Reading—specifically part two in my latest fiction subgenre obsession: royal family fiction. We've already had Katharine McGee on the show of the four-part American Royals series, and we will later have the writing duo behind The Royal We and The Heir Affair; today we have the writing duo behind The Royal Game, my latest royal family fiction favorite. (I'd also throw Red, White, and Royal Blue onto this list, as well.) It is a subgenre that is growing and growing in popularity, and not surprisingly, considering how ubiquitous the royal family has become in culture, especially lately. Today you get the chance to meet Linda Keir, a writing duo who has now written four books together and has been writing together since 2016. Linda Keir is a portmanteau of Linda Joffe Hull and Keir Graff, both of whom have successful writing careers on their own and as a team. The Royal Game—which came out on January 30 of this year—is their first foray into royal family fiction, but hopefully not their last. I won't give too much away, but the loose plot of The Royal Game involves the love story between American pop singer Jennie Jenson and Prince Hugh of England, the heir to the throne. Someone is determined to keep Jennie from becoming a princess, and to have the happy ending to her fairytale, Jennie will have to play “the royal game.” Not everyone is excited about the prospect of an American princess, apparently. Jennie finds parallels between what's happening to her and Hugh's mother, Princess Penelope, who died in a mysterious plane crash. (Don't worry, I ask Linda and Keir if my theories that Jennie and Hugh and Penelope are based on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and Princess Diana are true.) Jennie wants to know if Penelope is murdered—and worries she might be next. It's a thrilling mystery, a romantic love story, and really, really good. Today on the show we talk about their process of being a writing team, what they think about the royal family and if they follow it outside of their work on this latest book, why they chose to get into the royal family fiction subgenre, and what, exactly, “the royal game” is, anyway. The Royal Game by Linda Keir We also mention On Duty with the Queen by Dickie Arbiter on the show!
Get ready to get board! Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate explore the FIRST BOARD GAME, which might be The Royal Game of Ur OR Senat OR Mancala... OR it could even be YOU! No... that's silly. It's not you. It's definitely one of those three games we just listed. We discuss games we've loved, and even almost kinda invent our own! Board games have been around way longer than you realize. But are some of those historic games still being played? First we look back at some of the oldest games in human history that are still being played today. Dice has definitely been around the longest, dating all the way back to prehistoric times. But if you want something with an actual board, that would be the Royal Game of Ur, which has been played since 2650 BCE! Backgammon may no longer hold the title of oldest, but it sure has been around for a long time. There's even an annual, world-wide game award from Germany, called the Spiel des Jahres. One game a year has been picked as the best since 1978. There's some great games that we grew up with that may not make it on the Spiel des Jahres list, but they were fun nevertheless. Classic, mainstream games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Mousetrap, Yahtzee, and more start our board game discussion with some nostalgia. But it's Star Wars month, so we pick some of the Star Wars favorites from the last 46 years. From the original Escape From Death Star game to the heyday of Revenge of the Sith products, these classic games give us so many varieties of game play. Listen in to see if your favorites made the list. Which board games do you Enjoy playing? This week Alex and Kaz blow the dust off the classic of classics, the ancient and engaging Royal Game of Ur.
RJ and Elle begin their coverage of Astragalomancy, divination with Dice. RJ begins by describing his father's passion for Craps and Elle describes a dice tarot variant that used to be available in her store. RJ then begins the long, complex history of dice which goes well into pre-history. RJ describes the egyptian game of Senet and the Royal Game of Ur as some of the earliest examples of board games we know of. RJ then describes Astragali, the earliest dice which were made from a very specific knucklebone from a sheep. He then describes the ancient greek practice of Astragalomancy, where these bone dice were rolled to divine messages from the gods. RJ describes the statue of Hermes which has 56 different dice rolls and what they mean. Next, RJ describes the culture of gambling that grew from this divination practice and how it eventually grew into the Craps tables we know of today. RJ and Elle then roll the Astragali and see what messages the statue of Hermes has for them. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/mancy)

Dice are popular throughout the world. Ancient dice were not significantly different from modern forms, and the concept of a six-faced cube with dots has been the world's most famous pastime and gambling tool for centuries. The oldest known set of dice comes as a part of the Royal Game of Ur, the oldest existing board game dated at approximately 4,400 years old. The most popular medium for dice up until the 20th century seems to have been bone. Most dice are cast from plastic or synthetic resin. You may love a game that uses dice, but have you ever wondered about its history? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
On this week's podcast, I'm talking to Anne O'Brien about the Wars of the Roses, and the family at the heart of her new book, The Royal Game. We also discuss Historical Fiction, as we both disagree strongly with some historians such as Niall Ferguson who dismiss the genre.Head over to our website to find more articles, short stories, book reviews and interviews, and all absolutely free.
Play is older than humanity, but among the ancient Mesopotamians, a handful of games are attested throughout the ancient period, from all the way to the beginning with the Royal Game of Ur, to various gambling games and pastimes. Today we will look mostly at the board game called the Royal Game of Ur and see how it may have been played. Things are a bit up and down with the show right now, but I will be doing my best to keep us on a fortnightly release schedule either through guest episodes or bonus episodes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oldeststories/message
Tennis has a beautiful history, and Jim McCready is at the forefront of keeping that history alive and in front of tennis and sport fans across the world. Former Director of The APTA and a legend both on the tennis and platform tennis courts, Jim states that "tennis has been his life." His collection subtitled, Tennis At The Turn, started at The Belle Haven Club in Greenwich, Connecticut with a couple of 19th Century beautifully crafted wooden racquets. 40 years later, Jim is still accumulating racquets, memorabilia and art all connected to the history of tennis and sport. Jim was way ahead of his time, doing the "year-round gig" teaching paddle and tennis at not only the Belle Haven Club, but also at Armonk Tennis Club (NY), Montclair Golf Club (NJ), and Spring Brook Country Club (Morristown, NJ). As a paddle and tennis instructor, Jim was well placed to become a historian of racquet sports. His love for the game pours over into his curatorial power over a dynamic, historic collection. Jim believes that racquet sports are unmatched in teaching life's lessons. Whether part of the industry or just a player, racquet sports teach that individualism required as we tread the floorboards of life. Belle Haven Club, Greenwich CT - where The Driftway Collection was born. In regard to the collection, "trying to find a pristine racquet from the turn of the century is getting harder and harder." Having exhibited the collection around the world including in London, the former Family Circle stadium in Charleston, SC, and elsewhere, Jim is looking to possibly find a permanent locale and gallery for his tremendous trove of tennis treasures. Jim takes us through the evolution of tennis from the Royal Game, otherwise known as Real or Court Tennis and how the racquets changed from angled and small heads to where the head straightened out and were enlarged for lawn tennis and those early Wimbledon competitors. Where did the scoring come from? Jim is the man to take us through the evolution of tennis just prior to the first Wimbledon in 1877. The game hasn't changed much - a slightly lower net and the composition of the racquets, but much has not changed since those lofty days in the English countryside. You can find out all about Jim and his collection at The Driftway Collection online or check out his Instagram and Facebook pages of the same name.

Would you like to learn more about faith? You've come to the right person. No, not me, Abraham. This is a daily devotional podcast supporting a teaching series for the Watford church of Christ and the Thames Valley churches of Christ called "Adventures in faith with Abraham". It is also part of my quiet time coaching series. What is it about Abraham which is so admirable? Many things. But perhaps above all else his adventurous faith, “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8 NIV11) Join me as we step out on a faith adventure with Abraham. Episode 2 Most preaching and teaching about Abraham begins in Genesis 12. Understandable, but we are missing something. Abraham first comes on the scene in Genesis chapter 11. Let's take a few minutes today to consider how the story of Abraham is set up. “Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. Sarai was barren; she had no child. Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there. The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.” (Genesis 11:26–32 NAS95) The writer of Genesis portrays Abraham as an historical figure. The amount of geographical and genealogical data and level of detail makes most sense that way. Some people doubt the actual existence of Abraham, and point to the lack of archaeological evidence. But then, there is very little archaeological data for any individual figure from 4000 years ago. The absence of evidence is not evidence of the absence of Abraham. Let's spend a few moments today talking about geography and history. The ancient city of Ur is equated with today's Tell al-Muqayyar, situated on the Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia. It may have had a population of around 25,000 at the time Abraham lived there. Many buildings, a ziggurat and Royal tombs have been unearthed. Take a trip to the British Museum, or to its online gallery, and you will find what is called, "The Royal game of Ur". It is not too fanciful to imagine Abraham and his brothers playing this game as they grew up. The Royal Game of Ur, 2600BC-2400BC Use this image 1460257001 | British Museum Devotional thought for today The Bible is not a book of fantasy stories, neither is it a theological treatise. At times it uses poetic (e.g. Psalms) and apocalyptic language (e.g. Ezekiel, Daniel, Revelation), but most of the time it tells us about people to whom we can relate. Take some time to imagine Abraham playing a board game with his father Terah. Perhaps it was his dad who taught him how to play. Maybe he had a competition with his brothers Nahor and Haran. If they were anything like siblings I know, they will have argued over the game, possibly even fought over it, scattering the pieces and overturning the board. Picture playing the game with them - picking up a counter and placing it on the board. Of course, for this particular game the instructions have been long lost (!), but our imagination can supply the reality of the scene. Prayer point for today Ask God to help you see the humanity in Abraham and his contemporaries. Pray to approach their stories as people like you and I. If you have any questions or feedback please contact me: malcolm@malcolmcox.org. The apostle Paul said of Abraham, “He is the father of us all.” (Romans 4:16 NIV11) Let's allow him to be the father of Faith to you and me in January and February 2021. Many thanks for listening today. See you tomorrow as we continue our adventure of faith with Abraham. Take care and God bless, Malcolm

Well, we came in last this month, but this episode has finally arrived - time to discuss racing games! (Although, as we mention at the end, almost all games can be defined as racing games in one way or another.) Sadly, we are still limited by lockdown audio quality, but hopefully you still find it listenable. Thanks for bearing with us! In this episode: The world's oldest recorded trash talk. ("Observe my three!") If you want a groovy new copy of ancient board game, these guys can help. A pair of great videos about the Royal Game of Ur and how its rules were reconstructed. This whole Shut Up & Sit Down video is great, but I've skipped to the part about the Game of Goose. The cutest little dashboards from Formula-1. And, of course, some Top ASS Dollars! (Apologies to Altenburger Spielkarten; we are American, and also apparently about nine years old.) As always, we appreciate your listening and would love to hear your comments on any or all of these items, and especially a review on iTunes if you have the time and inclination! We return to the podcast to explore the connection between three videos we made: playing the Royal Game of Ur, visiting Rob's 3d printing lab, and Chesterton's Fence. Amazingly, there is a connection--all three have to do with how to approach the problem of incomplete information. Surprise! It's an off-week upload to line up with the release of a new video from our good friends Joseph Bjork and Joseph Fisher with Good and Basic! In this episode, Tom sits down with the Josephs to talk about a game that has been around 5,000 years, The Royal Game of Ur. Is it good? Is it bad? Does it deserve to have hung around for 5,000 years? What does it all mean? Find out the answers to those questions, or at least our best guesses, and more in this week's episode of the Dog and Thimble Podcast! You can find the playthrough of this game on the Good and Basic YouTube channel at: https://youtu.be/6Vq_jlfAJSk
In the third episode of our holiday series of excerpts from William Caxton's The Game and Playe of the Chesse, we learn about how the king and queen move, which was a bit different in the 15th century than it is today. We also consider the difficulty of working out the rules of an ancient game, even when you have the remarkable fortune to find them written down, as seen in the case of the Royal Game of Ur.

There is, and always has been, a war between the needs of the individual and the needs of the group.
