Scott notes, "If I had to give up something, as far as being in the know about what's really going on, I think social media would be the first thing I'd give up. It has great entertainment value but when it comes to making decisions about things where you need to really rely on what's truthful and accurate. It can come up lacking." Factors that Drive Newsworthiness Slade outlines five key news values that attract the most attention: locality, universality, celebrity involvement, conflict, and oddity. Stories that meet these criteria are more likely to engage and inform the public. Scott shares, "If your story can fill one, or even better, more of those slots, it's usually a good one." We talk about how confusing it is to get in and out of MSG and how much of a “dump” MetLife Stadium is and that it's difficult to get to if you're in Long Island. Congestion pricing also comes up and how terribly dirty an experience using the subway is. Jerry's back and starts with the Yankees win with some quotes from players. Also a very excited fan after the perfect game. The Mets losing the game when they had a chance gets a mention including Howie's call featuring the entire stadium booing in the background. Another Shohei Ohtani home run. The Rays announcer lost his voice and had to leave during the broadcast. An odd error loses it for the Padres which makes Adam Schein very upset. Harvard University addresses abuse in their women's hockey program. The coach quit because of it. Celtics introduce Porzingis and other NBA notes. In the final segment of the hour Shohei Ohtani comes up regarding where he ends up and how great of a player he is. If he ends up on the Giants, would be the greatest player who was on a team named the Giants. Hour 3: Pete Hoffman's swollen tongue becomes the topic of discussion along with how fast he speaks. Is Tiki a “fraud” Yankees fan? According to Carton he is.  The last Carton & Roberts show is discussed as well as the upcoming Evan & Tiki show and Brandon Tierney with Sal Licata. Jerry's got remarks from Kiner-Falefa regarding the Yanks win and the team feeling positive right now. Mets simply not doing well. Even good players have given up. A stolen home plate in extra innings to no avail as Royals score two in the bottom of the tenth. Discussion about arguing balls, strikes and challenging calls. Some NBA notes as well. MSU alumna Sheri Jones is a broadcasting and journalism icon in the Greater Lansing area. She's been anchoring the news at Lansing's CBS affiliate, WLNS-TV 6 for 35 years. And she's now also on Lansing's ABC affiliate, WLAJ. We last spoke in 2018 when Sheri was inducted into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Now in 2023, Sheri is being inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.“It feels great because of the true sense of the word journalism. I really believe that journalists, as I once heard, write the first draft of history. We're watching things as they unfold, and we're writing it down from a factual experiential point of view. And so, for me to have done that for 35 years and tackled some pretty big issues in our community and to be recognized for the journalism part of it, I'm awestruck by it.”Where did you grow up and why was MSU the place for you when college came around?“Well, it just felt like the place. When I came for my visit, I felt very comfortable here. It was a gut feeling. And I always tell parents, you have to let your child decide with their gut. I was accepted to the school down the street, and I went there with my parents and my dad was like, ‘Do you like it? Do you like it' and I'm like, ‘Dad, I don't. I just don't feel right here.' I'm a country girl from a small community on the west side of the state. There are trees and the Red Cedar and open spaces and fresh air. I just felt like this is where I belonged. And looking back, it was the correct decision for multiple reasons.”Did you always know you wanted to do broadcasting and journalism or did that develop later after you got here?“When I was in high school, I knew I liked a lot of different things. And remember I went to high school when there was no internet. My mom said, ‘Why don't you take a full day aptitude test, take an educational aptitude, take a personality aptitude, an interest aptitude.' I went all day, and it came back lawyer or journalist. I came to Michigan State to study journalism and communications and figured I could always go get my law degree. I thought I would try TV first because you just don't know how that's going to work out. And here I am 35 years later.”People who know you know that you like to say you'd rather be right than first with a story. Talk more about your philosophy of covering the news and being accurate.“Anybody who works with me knows that's right. And we will hold off. In this world of Twitter and Facebook - and as we've lived through here recently with 911 scanners and people reporting stuff on the scanner - you have to have an official affirm your story and make sure the facts that you're reporting are true. And I will always hold back until we know it's right, and then we can go. I'm not going to report on something that I have not vetted. I just won't do it. I don't care if we're going to get beat. Well, what if you're wrong? I can't afford that, and my station can't afford that.”How have you seen broadcasting and journalism evolve over the years and where is it going? “Yeah, via that live-streaming, my sister in Florida can watch me as I do the news. The shaping of the news and leads through Facebook and Twitter are something we have to follow. We'll follow those and vet those out. But the accessibility? When I grew up, my parents sat down, had dinner, and watched the 6:00 news and then the evening news. And now you can watch the news wherever you are, whenever you want. If you're standing in the checkout lane, you can watch it. You shouldn't do it when you drive, but you can be anywhere around the United States or around the world. It is the accessibility. But again, it has to be a trusted source. At the local level, we don't have an agenda. And as you move up that chain of media sources, you have to really understand what you're watching. And the algorithms of Facebook. Let's say you like a certain story, well, Facebook will feed you that information and continue to feed you that information in the vein of which your brain is telling you like. You're not going to get an opposing opinion. You have to seek that out. And that's just the way that it's set up.”Are there some favorite memories along the way or things you're proud of? I think of Crime Stoppers, for one.“Dr. Bob Trojanowicz, who was the head of the Criminal Justice Department here at Michigan State, really understood community policing. He understood how in order for the law and law enforcement to work, the community has to be kind of our eyes and ears. “Our success rate when we air three or four felons who are on the run on Wednesday nights at 11:00, by the next day or the next week, they either turn themselves in or their moms or ex-girlfriends turn them in. Sometimes they call themselves and ask, ‘How do I get my picture off the TV?' And I say, ‘Well, maybe turn yourself in.' But right now, our success rate is at like 78 percent. If we air four, three will be caught within a day or two or a week. It's very powerful in making our community safer. And then hopefully those people go get the rehabilitation and help that they need so they don't come back in into the system. But I feel very proud of helping to make our community safer through that effort.”What's your advice to the students at MSU now as they prepare to enter broadcasting and journalism?“The world is their oyster, as they say. We call them multimedia journalists, and they have to be well versed. The first thing is to understand journalism. Number one, you need to understand the ethics of journalism and what it takes to get a story and to make sure that you have your sources. I had some of the toughest professors here. If you misspelled a word, you got a point off. It went from a four to a three. Journalism and English are critical. The rest of it, you can learn. You can learn how to be on camera.You can learn how to talk into a microphone. You can learn the acting part. Definitely take acting classes now because you don't just sit behind a desk. Now, I stand, and I move all around the studio. You need to be a good storyteller. But at the beginning of that, the base of that, is journalism. To succeed, you need to be a good journalist, bottom line.”We talked about your long career at WLNS. No plans to stop, right? I mean, you're still engaged and love doing this.“Oh, I'm still so engaged. I believe I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I love my community. I love being able to help the university. You and I get to do the parade together. Dick Irvin, Jr. is a retired Canadian sports broadcaster and author. Dick was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988 under the broadcasters category. In 2004, Dick was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Dick is also a graduate of McGill University where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce. While attending university from 1951 to 1953, he played hockey for McGill's varsity team and worked part-time as an assistant to the equipment manager of the Montreal Canadiens, the team his father coached at the time. Dick talks about his experience playing hockey at McGill University and explains why it was so memorable to him. Then, Dick speaks about why he was a Maples Leafs fan before becoming a Montreal Canadiens fan. Afterwards, Dick describes what his father, Dick Irvin Senior was like as a coach and how he motivated/developed his players.  Dick explains how he got started in broadcasting the game of hockey and who his favourite broadcaster was growing up. He talks about what it was like working with Danny Gallivan and shares a couple of stories. Dick had many fond memories of broadcasting games with “ Hockey Night in Canada” discusses some memorable hockey moments. This special bonus episode will so much meta on so many levels.   Let me start by rewinding about a year back. I was approached by someone who was in the process of starting a brand-new radio station in the UK. The plan was to build their programming around good podcasts from around the world. And they said that they would like to have The Radio Vagabond on the program.   I thought it sounded quite exciting and different – so I said I was in. And right from the launch of the radio station in February, The Radio Vagabond has been a part of the program daily.   The station is called Podcast Radio and they broadcast online to the whole world and on DAB radio in London, Surrey, Manchester & Glasgow.   In between the various handpicked podcasts, they do news and interviews. And one of their hosts is a radio legend. Literally.   His name is Gene Baxter – and went by the artist name Bean for many years. He is an Anglo-American born and raised in West Yorkshire, England. When he was 15, the family moved to the United States and he started doing radio.   For about 30 years he was part of a legendary morning show "Kevin & Bean" on an at least as legendary radio station… KROQ in Los Angeles.   It was such a huge success that in 2015 they were inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. That's a huge deal, so he's truly a legend.   In March 2019, Bean announced that he would stop later in the year and move home to England with his wife. Because even though he sounds very American, he also feels very British.   Now he is one of the hosts on Podcast Radio. And as you will hear, he is an amazing natural talent behind a microphone – and I was honoured to speak to one of my personal heroes in the industry I have worked in since 1985.   So welcome to Meta-Monday… Here is an interview with me… so an old radio dude being interviewed by another old radio dude… from a radio station that broadcasts this podcast and now this interview is here too. With Osgood as anchor, “CBS Sunday Morning” reached its highest audience levels in more than two decades, and been three times named the Outstanding Morning Program on television by Daytime Emmy voters.  He joined CBS News in 1971 and has been an anchor and reporter for every broadcast on the network, including the “CBS Morning News,” the “CBS Evening News With Dan Rather” and the “CBS Sunday Night News.” Before joining CBS News, Osgood was an anchor and reporter for WCBS News Radio 880 in New York. He also earned an Emmy Award in 2004, for his story “Net Gain,” about a basketball group created by Americans to bring strife-torn children of different religions and races together. He also received two News Emmy Awards in 1997 for “Wyeth at 80” and “Princess Diana.” On radio, “The Osgood File” has earned its author five coveted Washington Journalism Review Best in the Business Awards. Osgood received a 1999 Radio Mercury Award, a 1996 President's Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for outstanding coverage and support of music creators and a 1993 Marconi Radio Award. Osgood made his big screen debut as the narrator of Dr. Seuss' “Horton Hears a Who,” the animated feature film adaptation of the beloved children's book. He also wrote “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House” (Hyperion, 2008), a compendium of anecdotes from the last 70 years of presidential campaigns.
