It came out of nowhere, right as hundreds of Forest School Leaders were preparing for the Autumn semester:   An opinion piece in The Guardian ominously titled "I'm All For the Concept of Forest School, Just Not the Kind I Pulled My Kids Out Of." by Emma Brockes. It's just six paragraphs of cynical observations around schools, camps, forest schools and misunderstanding, but it packs a lot of criticism for nature education without a lot of detail, nuance or substance.    It's the kind of piece that can and did get under the skin of a LOT of dedicated, passionate educators who did not take kindly to the views expressed.    Asa Hardy-Brownlie and I discuss this and nature education media narratives in detail and talk about the challenges we face as a profession to effectively respond to these kinds of pieces that can really skew the understanding of parents, teachers and schools.    What sorts of ways do we want to communicate what we do and why it's important and valuable to children and families?      We talk about websites, social media and ideas and ways of shaping our messaging so it sticks and is effective, which are some of the gold nuggets we can glean from this experience. Nature is a literacy-rich environment, a place where we can experiment with language in many ways.  Our land provides us with an inherently play-based environment where we can explore literacy in an informal way.  We can expand our vocabulary, develop conversational skills, recount stories and events, and the list goes on and on. And this isn't just for our youngest learners, we can all develop our language through play and our outdoor environment is a very powerful tool that we can use to help us on that learning journey.  Our guest tonight is Faye Brownlie, a literacy superstar! She has worked all over Canada as well as internationally to support and coach K-12 teachers in their journey towards creating an inclusive literacy framework for their classrooms. Join in our conversations at: HauntersToolbox.com UK Haunters is a vlog style documentary that explores the UK Haunt scene from the POV of filmmaker Dan Brownlie as he opens up the UK haunt scene for the world to view. While shooting a feature film at the London Tombs scare attraction (entitled 'The Tombs'), director Dan Brownlie got a peek into the inner workings of how scare attractions work and some of the tricks of the trade. Bowled over by the ingenuity and inventiveness he decided he needed to know more. After searching for more information, Dan found there were no documentaries covering the huge UK scene, so he decided to take a year to document what he found. Heavily inspired by found-footage horror films, this documentary has an often unique visual style that mirrors the diverse nature of the industry it's representing. What he found was shocking, amazing, heartwarming and inspiring. Want to know more? You'll have to watch and find out. Watch: https://www.amazon.com/UK-Haunters-Andy-Cookie-Rawlings/dp/B08HW1Y7MS

Little by little he began creating more cards of actors who were on the convention circuit and for movies that didn't have cards of their own. Due to the demand of other folks who liked his creations, he opened up a storefront so people could order more easily. Jeremy Brownlie of Griffıth University in Brisbane, Australia, talks with Jeff Fox about how bacteria influence aggressive behavior in an animal. Fruit flies infected with the wMelPop strain of Wolbachia were less aggressive than their uninfected peers. The neurotransmitter octopamine regulates fruit fly aggression, and Brownlie and his collaborators found that the infected flies produce less of the compound than their uninfected peers, and expression of two genes that encode enzymes responsible for producing octopamine are present at lower levels in infected flies. “That suggested that Wolbachia directly affects fruit fly gene function,” he says. This story was featured in the September 2015 issue of Microbe magazine.  Visit http://microbeworld.org/mmp for complete show notes.
