Guest: Todd Bermont Guest Bio: Houston‐based, High Technology Sales and Business Development Leader with over 30 years of sales management, business development, and sales experience in Data Center Design/Build, IT, Mission‐Critical Power Infrastructure (UPS, PDU, and Solar), Professional Services, and SaaS. Recruited and hired six times by former colleagues. Sales management accomplishments include achieving record sales and profit each year for the first three full years as VP of Sales for Solarcraft and growing the OEM division of APC from $10 Million to over $100 million in four years. As Director of Business Development/Marketing for Lee Technologies, helped the company grow from $55 Million in sales to over $100 Million in two years. Having conducted business in over 20 countries, noted accomplishments include: winning several multi‐million‐dollar, new business clients, authoring numerous books, being featured on TV (CNN, FOX, & CBS) and in print (Fox Business, Forbes, and 7x24), and speaking at AFCOM Data Center World. Key Points: Sales Success and Key Strategies: Team Composition: Hiring the right people is crucial. Todd emphasizes that success is built on a solid team and that turnover, while challenging, is part of finding the right fit. Focus on Leverage: Rather than pursuing small sales, the team focuses on targeting decision-makers who can purchase in larger volumes. This approach maximizes the return on each sales effort. Sales from Existing Customers: Todd highlights the importance of expanding within current accounts. Selling more to existing clients, especially those already approved as vendors, often leads to significantly higher revenue. Customized Compensation Plans: Salespeople's compensation plans are customized to what motivates them most, ensuring a higher level of ownership and motivation. Incentives, or "kickers," are tied to specific achievements like securing large deals or meeting quarterly revenue goals. Hiring and Firing: Todd stresses the importance of not tolerating poor performance. He follows a principle similar to his day trading experience: when something isn't working, cut your losses quickly. Key indicators in hiring include assessing how candidates perform during the interview process (e.g., their sales skills and engagement). He has learned the importance of listening to his gut during interviews and avoiding the temptation to forgive red flags due to strong referrals. New hires are expected to produce meaningful sales activity (quotes, meetings) early on. Lack of activity often signals that someone isn't putting in the effort. Sales Culture: Coaching and Continuous Improvement: Todd sees sales as a mental game, emphasizing the need for salespeople to believe in the product they are selling. His book, Cognitive Selling, focuses on how mental preparedness and belief in the product are key to success. Salespeople must be coachable and open to learning. Todd also emphasizes creating a strong sales strategy and requires new hires to submit a 90-day business plan to outline how they will succeed. Key Insights: Sales growth at Solarcraft was driven by having the right people, focusing on large deals, and working to grow revenue within existing accounts. The importance of an effective, tailored compensation plan cannot be overstated—when salespeople have ownership over their earnings structure, their performance improves. Todd believes in leading by example and insists that salespeople who don't believe in what they're selling won't be successful. AVCOM, the premium event production agency, has announced a new €7.5 million deal with Croke Park Meetings & Events. This five-year partnership, secured after a competitive tender process, focuses on hosting, revolutionising, and promoting sustainable events. It is expected to initially generate €1.5 million for AVCOM by the end of 2024, with annual revenue expected to grow year on year in excess of €2 million. In recent years, Ireland has witnessed an increasing demand for sustainable events, with sustainability offerings influencing event attendance, particularly for overseas events. According to insights from AVCOM's 'Experience More: The Future of Events Report 2023', a notable 13% of attendees claim their companies restrict overseas travel for events due to sustainability considerations, while 31% require special permission. Moreover, for local events, companies are actively promoting responsible transportation choices, with 38% advocating for public transport or walking, and encouraging virtual attendance where feasible. As Ireland's leading event production agency, AVCOM was chosen by Croke Park Meetings & Events for its production services, technical expertise, and extensive national and international client base. Over the past nine years, AVCOM has delivered extensive support for both in-person and virtual events at Croke Park Meetings & Events. The company's on-site team collaborates seamlessly with the Croke Park Meetings & Events staff, hosting between one and seven events each day - totalling 300 events last year alone. These events span a diverse range of events including corporate conferences, exhibitions, match days, and concerts. With 100 meeting rooms and eight suites, Croke Park Meetings & Events can accommodate live, hybrid, and virtual gatherings of various sizes. The upcoming addition of the Cusack Stand event space, scheduled to open in May, further enhances this offering. This partnership enhances AVCOM's service offering, allowing it to propose Croke Park Meetings & Events as a venue to its extensive roster of 2,500 businesses. Companies who have already benefited from this collaboration include GAA, PWC, Failte Ireland, AXA Insurance, Tidy Towns, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Olivia Breene, Head of Business Development & Marketing, AVCOM, said: "This news is very welcome, as it not only enhances our client offerings but also adds to our recent string of successful tender wins, including Enterprise Ireland and Trinity College. Collaborating with venues allows us to provide a diverse range of experiences, which, we believe, reinforces our position within the industry. We look forward to extending this success to our partnership with Croke Park and collaborating on delivering exceptional events." Paul Murphy, Managing Director, AVCOM, said: "Croke Park Meetings & Events stands out as one of Ireland's most unique and sustainable venues. The venue's impressive track record for hosting eco-conscious events underscores our shared commitment to sustainability. This partnership elevates our offerings, enabling us to introduce our national and international clients to experience the electrifying ambiance of Croke Park. Together, we're set to accelerate and transform the events landscape in Ireland, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future." Marie Smyth, Head of Venue Business, Croke Park, said: "Teaming up with AVCOM for the second time is a testament to the continued partnership and represents a major milestone in our expansion journey. Its position as Ireland's premier event production company and a key advocate for eco-conscious events perfectly matches our own sustainability objectives. AVCOM seamlessly integrates with our team, providing invaluable expertise every step of the way. With their enhanced skills and experiences, we look forward to combining our strengths to deliver value to our clients across the country." See more stories here.

Electrify America is installing more rapid chargers across the United States than you can poke a stick at. They currently have over 800 charging stations with around 3,500 individual chargers from 150 kW up to 350 kW. They are currently installing 4 new charging stations or hubs every week. This is a seriously rapid roll out. Electrify America have developed ways to reduce strain on local grids with their installation of multiple rapid chargers. Robert Barrosa is the Senior Director of Sales, Business Development & Marketing for Electrify America, and in this week's episode of the Fully Charged Show Podcast, he explains how this is being achieved and a little bit about the history of the funding that has made much of this expansion possible. In late 2016, the U.S. Justice Department fined VW $30 billion after the company was caught rigging two of its diesel engines to pass U.S. emissions tests. That figure included the funding new zero-emissions vehicle technology and in particular charging networks. Quite a sensible way of using the money from a corporate fine.

In this episode I speak with Jay Harrington who is one of the country's leading consultants and strategists in the areas of legal marketing, PR, and business development. His consulting work includes helping clients define strong market positioning, develop effective thought-leadership strategies, gain visibility through public relations, and generate new business through the execution of marketing tactics. In addition to running his own agency, he is the author of three books (The Productivity Pivot, the Essential Associate, and One of a Kind) that teach lawyers how to develop their business, manage their time, and stand out both in their firm and in the legal world more broadly. I first learned about Jay through his wonderful LinkedIn profile where he posts thought provoking (but not cookie cutter) ideas about how to succeed in the practice of law daily to more than 13,000 followers. Jay started his legal career at the law firms of Skadden Arps and Foley & Lardner and also opened his own boutique law firm in Detroit focused on bankruptcy and restructuring before moving to legal marketing work and coaching full-time. In our conversation we covered a lot including: his path from Big Firm lawyer thrust into bankruptcy work in the wake of 9/11, to boutique bankruptcy lawyer in Detroit during the automative bankruptcy crises, to leading an agency that teaches and supports lawyers in building brands and marketing themselves better; the importance of finding and serving a niche instead of being all things to all clients; how to build a personal brand as a junior lawyer without coming of as sleazy or disingenuous; how to gain expertise and then position yourself as an expert that clients want to work with; the power of investing in yourself as a lawyer while also doing good work and being an integral part of your team; and more. With 37,000 restaurants in over 100 countries serving 69 million people every day, McDonald's understands how great an impact they have. The last time John spoke with Emma Cox, North American Sustainability Manager at McDonald's Corporation during the 2019 Innovation Summit, the company was primarily focused on energy efficiency within the U.S. Since that beginning, their focus has had a global shift that will positively affect the environment. Listen to hear how McDonald's is changing the world one community at a time. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... McDonald's focus on using its scale for good [2:21] From national to global sustainability [6:15] McDonald's new Global Impact Team [10:32] What's next for McDonald's sustainability? [13:25] The importance of community [20:33] Building a sustainability team [23:18] The beginning of McDonald's and sustainability How did McDonald's start this journey of global sustainability? Emma discusses the first goal McDonald's established as their science-based target. Their goal is to reduce their greenhouse emissions by 36% by the year 2030. Working toward this original project has taught them a lot about what does and doesn't work. This learning process has propelled McDonald's to achieve a wider range of impact. In 2019, McDonald's announced their first-ever power purchase agreements. In 2020 they made more agreements that equate to 8,000 restaurants worth of electricity. These 1,130 megawatts of wind and solar energy are enough to power 275 million homes! Not only does this progress provide renewable energy, but it also provides thousands of jobs in the communities. Good world for good food McDonald's focus goes beyond just making a good burger. They want to focus on doing more in the world and for their customers. McDonald's wants to find more of what they can do and how they can positively impact the environment. To do this, they've created a Global Impact Team. Part of this team is focused on social impact. Their goal is to find how they can best serve their community and add value to the environment locally. Another aspect of the team is focused on government and policy. They put their efforts into what changes can be made in regulation that will help promote green energy. Finally, the communications and relations part of the team focuses on sharing the mission of working together to make the world better. McDonald's Global Impact Team isn't large. It's a small group of individuals who are passionate about renewable energy goals. Alongside their team, McDonald's consults with experts to make sure that the best, most effective decisions are made. McDonald's example shows that even a small group of people can help guide a company towards a sustainable future. By learning through the process and asking the right people for guidance, any company can make a difference. Sustainability for each community McDonald's has a unique opportunity to bring renewable options to local small businesses and cities. These sustainable options can be accessible in otherwise unavailable places due to the importance McDonald's places on community impact. This connects directly with McDonald's brand purpose to make delicious, feel-good moments for everyone. Customers can feel good about the company they're investing in because they're also helping to create a healthier environment. For years McDonald's has supported communities through actions like sponsoring Little League teams and hosting community events. Community impact is a huge part of the consideration before placing a McDonald's. Each restaurant location begins by identifying the needs of the community and defining ways to be helpful. By combining this focus with their large scale, McDonald's is helping people, animals, and the environment thrive. Resources & People Mentioned McDonald's Global Impact Team Connect with Emma Cox Emma Gillespie Cox on LinkedIn Emma Cox is the North American Sustainability Manager at McDonald's Corporation. She leads Renewable Energy globally for the company. Last year, under Emma's leadership, McDonald's announced its first two PPAs, together totaling 380 MW, in the US. She believes McDonald's can use its Scale for Good to transform the renewable energy market. After graduating from Columbia University in New York, she worked for the U.S. Green Building Council specifically on programs, events, and continuing education. From there, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for an energy and sustainability tech start-up called Green Per Square Foot—leading their Business Development & Marketing team. She went on to lead the Energy & Sustainability consulting group for Cushman & Wakefield before eventually ending up at McDonald's, where she has the unique opportunity to use its scale for good. Having worked in many areas within Sustainability, Emma has a diverse skill set but has always had a passion for making the world a better place. At home, she is Mom to two young kids and enjoys traveling whenever they let her get away. Bruce knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur since as far back as when he was in college at West Chester University, and would purchase clothing to sell on campus to other students. That experience taught him how to market himself, brand himself, and how to make a profit. Bruce created his first tech startup, while at West Chester, UniversityBay (basically a Craigslist for college students). It was essentially an exchange platform, where students could exchange sneakers/watches/gear for textbooks, or simply buy/sell items to other students. Additionally, students could look for jobs, internships, and housing, on the platform. Bruce likes to say that it “failed gloriously.” At the age of 19, Bruce also managed Patti LaBelle’s Philadelphia based studio for a while. Bruce then worked as a media planner and marketer (doing search engine marketing) for companies and brands that were new to him (like J&J, and some others). Bruce believes that marketing should be HR’s big brother. Data should also drive HR, and you should treat your employees like customers. First and foremost, you should stop “fucking up job postings” and tell people about the jobs that they will actually be doing. Bruce also co-founded several other tech startups, for example: Defined Clarity (a software firm that built, customized, and provided support services for web frameworks and enterprise applications); and, gatherDocs (a mobile hiring tool that simplified the hiring process for the hourly workforce). Bruce was also the VP of Business Development & Marketing for Efficient Hire, which started from a partnership, which then eventually merged into another. Soon thereafter Employee Cycle was born. Bruce frequently speaks at Disrupt HR, at other tech or startup conferences, is an active member of Philadelphia’s startup community. Employee Cycle is dedicated to helping organizations leverage HR data to make data-informed and data-driven business decisions. They do this by creating user-friendly workforce dashboards, that are super easy to use, with internal and external HR data, financial data, and other relevant information that shows the impact on the bottom line. If you're interested in better understanding and optimizing the efficiency of your workforce, you should email Bruce right after you finish listening to how awesome he is.You can read more about Bruce here: (https://employeecycle.com/about/). Show AgendaOn today’s episode we will:• Get to know Bruce and Employee Cycle • Discuss HR data – specifically why HR needs to be data driven (similar to the way Marketing campaigns are run); and how HR data storytelling helps visualize the story around diversity (ethnic groups and level of engagement), engagement, performance, employer reputation, etc.• Learn about how HR data helps increase employee retention and engagement, and why you need to create EE goals from the start (because Bruce believes that “having a transparent and organized career path creates an environment of retaining key employees”)• Then we will dive into the trials and tribulations of co-founding tech startups as well as some best practices for tech startups (because Bruce has a lot of experience in the startup space) What you will learn on this episode:• How Employee Cycle transforms “disconnected HR Data into one centralized source of truth• Some of the HR mistakes that organizations commit, which Employee Cycle helps fix• Looking at EE retention, why goal setting early in the EE/ER relationship and ensuring that there is a transparent career path is so important to retaining key EEs• Necessary milestones to get a tech startup off the ground (necessary steps to take, necessary agreements to set up, and what are your thoughts on seeking out investors early on vs bootstrapping, etc.)• The ideal team size and mix of co-founders (Bruce has co-found many startups)• How to test your ideas before going to market• Once you know a market exists, and you need to start doing business development, where to start pitching and prospecting• Best practices for being prepared for your pitch meetings• Why marketing is critical for tech startups, and what the necessary best practices• Lessons learned throughout Employee Cycle’s seed round process, and Bruce’s advice to other tech startups looking for funding (e.g.: how to get VCs to pay attention, how to stand out, etc.)• The three things Bruce wishes someone would have told him as he was co-founding his startup companies and trying to scale the brands he has been involved in• And so much more! After you’ve listened to the episode, make sure you visit Employee Cycle (https://employeecycle.com/) to get more information about their amazing HR Dashboard and tools. Why a Lack of Corporate Digital Marketing Inspired Tammy to Build her Personal Brand Florida-based Neuro International is a post-acute provider for brain or spinal injury patients. Like many companies in the healthcare industry, NI’s executives have not yet embraced digital marketing strategies for corporate brand elevation. In this episode, Tammy explains that because she’s a competitive person, she wanted to seek out areas where competitors weren’t succeeding and move NI into those sectors. She discovered digital marketing and personal branding while attending a national conference as an exhibitor. She noticed that throughout the conference the organizers were tracking the top 20 social influencers via Twitter and thought to herself, “I could learn how to do this and earn a place on that list!” By the end of the conference, she accomplished that goal and fell in love with communicating messages through social media. From there she attended workshops, studied voraciously, and was determined to build a rock solid personal brand in order to add value to her industry and company. Her journey is understood best by listening to this episode, don’t miss it.
