For many, practices like meditation and yoga are among the most thrilling avenues for deepening spiritual awareness. At their best, these techniques can serve as a neurological and biochemical reset—enhancing self-awareness and empowering transformation. But at their worst, they can cause a loss of personal grounding, leaving individuals vulnerable to exploitative relationships or mental, physical, and even sexual harm under unethical or authoritarian figures. As a result, people often find themselves wagering between powerful tools for psychological growth and the risk of undue influence. In this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum, I speak with my longtime friend and colleague, David Christopher Lane, PhD—Professor of Philosophy and Sociology at Mt. San Antonio College—about this delicate balance. David is the author of numerous books, including The Making of a Spiritual Movement: The Untold Story of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar, The Radhasoami Tradition, Exposing Cults: When the Skeptical Mind Meets the Mystical, The Unknowing Sage, and The Virtual Reality of Consciousness. Cambridge University Press published his most recent book, The Sound Current Tradition: A Historical Overview, in 2022. He also co-authored an annotated bibliography on the Radhasoami movement for Oxford University Press. Beyond academia, David is a world champion bodysurfer with titles spanning from 1997 to 2016. David is also an expert on neuroscience and virtual reality technology. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
"The hardest part to overcome is the feeling of lack or scarcity. Also be careful you are not trying to manifest from a place of feeling if you have this thing/experience you will then be enough. You have to feel abundant and whole before manifesting. Practice on small items first and slowly get bigger." - Carolyn Wilman, Source: Winning a House/YouTube I was fortunate to interview Helene when I started podcasting. Mid 2000 something. I first read about Helene on Joe Vitale's blog. "Helene is fascinating. She personally knew many of the great teachers of the New Thought Movement, from prolific prosperity author Joseph The Power of Your Subconscious Mind Murphy to Silva Mind Control creator Jose Silva to the mystical founder of Eckankar, Paul Twitchell. Helene is delightfully fearless. She calls it the way she sees it, even if what she sees is invisible." - Joe Vitale's Blog This is a 2nd reference to Helene. Carolyn and I connected because of Helene. She plans to celebrate what would have been Helene's 100th birthday - in June 2024. Bio: Carolyn Wilman loves teaching others about Mindset, Marketing, and how to WIN! (both in life & sweepstakes.) As a Digital Marketer—under the banner of her agency Idea Majesty—Carolyn provides viral marketing programs that help companies in different industries maximize their promotional budgets while increasing their loyal customer bases. Destined to help others live out their potential, Carolyn founded a publishing company—Words For Winning—that purchases publishing rights from out-of-print authors and thought leaders. She then updates and reintroduces their books to a new generation of readers. To date, she has re-published all of Helene Hadsell's books. Helene was famous for winning every prize she ever desired, including a fully furnished home. Carolyn has also purchased the rights to many of Drs. Tag & Judith Powell's books. Interestingly, Tag was Helene's second publisher and an author in his own right. Additionally, Carolyn is a Sweepstakes Teacher and is known as—The Contest Queen—she also wrote two award-winning books, You Can't Win If You Don't Enter and How To Win Cash, Cars, Trips & More! Her proven online entry system has helped others win more than $1M in cash and prizes. "At the end of March I drove through 18 states in 12 days": https://wordsforwinning.com/winning-in-life-2024-road-trip/ Joe Vitale - Mr. Fire: "Contesting: The Name It and Claim It Game, the best book ever written on using mind power to win contests and get lucky. That book changed my life, as well as the lives of about 3,000,000 others." Link. Carolyn's interview with Helene - from 2008. YouTube. Podcast guest 495 is Rodney Jones, jazz musician and faculty member at Julliard. He is a long time student of the Eckankar teachings and for decades he has sung HU, an ancient mantra and sacred sound, for spiritual upliftment and connection to God. During this podcast we also talk about his near death experience and his past life revelation. We also talk about what is Eckankar. HU is an ancient name for God and has been used for thousands of years as a prayer, mantra, and sacred chant to attune oneself to the presence of God. In many spiritual practices, sound plays an important part in uplifting the individual. HU is a key to open your heart to God's loving presence in your life. Anyone can sing “HU,” regardless of their age, background, or religion. The HU Chant or Mantra is a simple technique that can be used as part of your daily spiritual practice. It has the power to uplift one spiritually for inner peace, healing, and insight. On this weeks episode of Exit the Cult, we head to Minnesota to learn about the Eckankar movement that plagerized... I mean, promotes the idea that one can separate their soul from their body and experience "light and sound." We ask ourselves why someone as insanely popular as Joe Rogan would Neil Young to the cancel mob before hearing a stark warning from the globalist royal, Prince Charles, urging UN nations to unify for "his" next phase to save the world. This week we look at the inspiring story of a man who went from stripping naked in an airport and battling demons in a psych ward to becoming not just a living Eck Master, but the last living Eck Master: Sri Harold Klemp, the current leader of Eckankar. According to former members, Klemp spends his days astral projecting himself to the other side of the world to conjure shadow demons and cause poor former eckists to poop their pants while they sleep. Nothing about that is an exaggeration, this one gets kind of weird. At the very least we learn that Eckankar isn't nearly as squeaky clean as they like to present and demons might be real.
This week we're bringing you spaghetti fights, country music, diarrhea curses, and corn-fed masters as we jump back into the world of American New Age religions and begin our look at Eckankar, which boasted tens of thousands of adherents in its heyday and continues to exist. While Eckankar shares quite a few similarities with some other groups we've covered, it's a bit different. They have Eck Masters, you see. Not ascended masters, Eck masters. And in fact they even have a living Eck Master. On the surface, they seem to be pretty innocuous and just kind of goofy, and hey, at least they teach you the magic. But dig a little deeper and things get real weird, real fast. In part 1 we learn about Eckankar's founder Paul Twitchell, a man who first incarnated on this earth thousands of years ago as an "unspecified mineral" and who owned so many hats that he lost a job because it. He also used his super special astral projection powers to scare barnyard animals as a kid. This one is both incredibly goofy, and deeply unsettling. Also incredibly difficult to summarize. Enjoy!

King Crimson - Cadence And Cascade (1970) There are versions with Greg Lake and Gordon Haskell singing lead floating around. Now the rarely heard version with Boz Burrell, who I think was being groomed as a kind of heartthrob in mid-60s England but ended up learning bass from Bob Fripp of King Crimson. Then he joined Bad Company and didn't sing a note. KC must have really believed in this song. Their second album was a virtual carbon copy of their first. Don Potter - Unchain My Heart (1978) Caravan - The Love in Your Eye (Live) (1974) A more energetic Moody Blues, a far better band than Barclay James Harvest, Caravan never reached any sort of appreciable sales, but they were pretty interesting. Using a full orchestra in the studio and live before even Renaissance, listening to them reminded me of that same old pop vs. prog de-evolution that so many prog bands ended up suffering. Elizabeth C. Farrell for New York State Assembly (1968) Anti-hippie political campaign flexi-disc. Elizabeth C. (Betty) Farrell was a New York State Assembly candidate for the 138th district in 1968. Embryo - Wajang Woman (1976) Family - In My Own Time (1971) Family - The Weavers Answer (1970) Sri Darwin Gross - With Eckankar(1972) Religion ruins everything. It's a constant scam with willing, gullible fools who keep pumping money and mindpower into what they hope is salvation of a permanent kind. But it's all a big grift. All of it. And so it was with a fellow named Paul Twitchell, who started a loony off-shoot of Scientology called Eckankar. This was around 1964. When he died in 1971, his wife chose Darwin Gross as his successor. And this album was released. It's pretty high-quality backing for such a mediocre singer. Judge for yourself! Family - Burlesque (1972) The bass player is our own prog god John Wetton! This was what he was doing between Mogul Thrash and King Crimson. I wonder if HE sang "Cadence and Cascade" at one time. This is a combination of boogie and prog if there ever was one. Wetton's playing style is instantly recognizable. Frank Pellico - Shaft (1976) Pellico played the stadium organs for both the Chicago Cubs (Wrigley) and the Blackhawks (United Center). Funny Bone – Ride On Bones (1977) I love this record. Calvin Arnold recorded singles until the '80s. Worked with Fats Domino in 1970. I owe Fats a show. Chatham - Hump Up (197?) Johnny Watson - Unchain My Heart (1967) Before recording his own hits in the '70s and doing stuff with early acolyte Frank Zappa, he was sort of like James Brown on this release, an instrumental album without the "Guitar" part in his name. Lennie Macdonald - Sad City Woman (1975) Featuring Mike Giles on drums. You know. MICHAEL Giles, the first drummer for....King Crimson. The violin solo features Wilf Gibson, who played with Electric Light Orchestra on their first two albums. Wilf played on LOTS of stuff in the decade. Including CARAVAN, and, most notably, on Kiki Dee's most popular album, I've Got The Music In Me. That was released on Elton John's label. The singer sounds just like Gerry Rafferty. Or vice-versa. De Maskers - Unchain My Heart (1967) I should have played this, their 1965 collaboration with what must have been an increasingly desperate Chubby Checker. Next time. I just love this cover. De Maskers (The Masks) was a Dutch pop group. The mask gimmick lasted a year, maybe? Streetwalkers - Me and Me Horse and Me Rum (1976) From Discogs: In 1974 Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney formed a band with a fluid line up including Family and King Crimson members. They released an album "Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers" the same year. In 1975 guitarist and vocalist Bobby Tench from The Jeff Beck Group. They released three studio albums as Streetwalkers, before disbanding in 1977. Also on this record: Wilf Gibson. Boz - Isn't That So (1966) Neoton Familia - California Dreamin' (1978) Hungarian disco for you. NGC-4594 - Skipping Through the Night (1968) The name refers to the designation for the Sombrero Galaxy in the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars or NGC. I hate The Doors and their influence on bands that tried the same thing they were trying to do. Painted Faces - Lost You In My Mind (1967) Chapman-Whitney - Parisienne High Heels (1974) Another collaboration featuring John Wetton and Michael Giles who played in different iterations of King Crimson. Great song. Roger Chapman's voice is a little offputting at first, but these songs are uniformly interesting. Roger Chapman and The Shortlist - Prisoner (1981) More good stuff despite the cheesy '80s synth, and more John Wetton on bass. Sakura (櫻花) - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (1971) Shankar Ganesh - Coca Cola (198?) From the liner notes of the compilation: "Play That Beat Mr. Raja" is the very first compilation dedicated to Tamil recordings in the West. It explores the wild shores of these late 80's Kollywood music productions. With an avalanche of cinematic strings, analog synths, mind-blowing vocal punchlines, and drumkit earthquakes mixed with folkloric percussive elements, it reveals the audacity of composers such as Ilayaraja, Shankar Ganesh, or Hamsalekha. Covering an impressive range of styles, it features Kamal Hassan's vocoded rap "Vikram Vikram", Shankar Ganesh's disco stomper "Coca Cola", and the irresistible Bontempi instrumental "Love Theme", among many other hits. Straddling boundaries between traditional southern Indian identity and digested western influences, these selected oddities remain a lesson of creativity and freedom in the world of soundtracks, with their stunning incorporation of the most typical of 80s tools in a classical context, and constant love for daring structures and demented arrangements. Sri Darwin Gross - At The Grassroots (1972) You are Soul, an eternal, creative being. Unlimited. Divine. Does something inside you long to know life’s purpose? To make sense of the world around you? Eckankar is an active, individual, creative spiritual practice. A companion and road map for your journey home—to the heights of Self-Discovery and God-Discovery, and beyond. Come along and discover the most secret part of yourself. The key to spiritual freedom lies within you. Shigeko Toya - Unchain My Heart (1973) Mell Martin - Space Oddity (1980) Sri Darwin Gross - It Just Is! (1972)
http://eckinmass.org Fortunately on this path of Eckankar we have tools which can help one with fear and stress. One of the main tools is singing the word HU. Singing HU, pronounced like the man’s name Hugh, has many spiritual benefits, among them a feeling of comfort and peace, and a release of fears. It also offers us much more than this. Sung over time, and with the guidance of our spiritual leader, we can realize our true nature which is Soul, an atom in the body of God. A benefit of this realization is a sense on freedom, spiritual freedom, and a feeling of unconditional love. This is not a state of selfish realization, but one where our greatest joy is in serving others, in being a channel to bring this unconditional love into the world.

Sometimes you have to look your former spiritual mentor in the eyes and say, "Hey, buddy. I'm thoroughly plagiarizing your work so I can make some cash off this cult. And that's OK." Other times you have to sing over the Berlin Wall at an old East German woman who's been through both world wars about how you have to work hard for your freedom. It's a complicated life, this crazy ride we call a podcast. Join us, won't you?

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews author of Tom Blake: A Surfer’s Philosophy, Dr. David Christopher Lane. Dr. Lane is a professor of philosophy and sociology at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California who specializes in the study of new religious movements including cults and the interface between science and religion. He is known for his book The Making of a Spiritual Movement: The Untold Story of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar which exposed the origins of Eckankar and demonstrated the plagiarism of its founder, Paul Twitcell. Dr. Lane is also an avid surfer and bodysurfer, having won the World Bodysurfing Contest in 1999 and the International Bodysurfing Contest 8 times between 1997-2016. In this episode, Derik and Dr. Lane chat in detail about American swimmer, lifeguard, stunt man, inventor, writer, early vegetarian, philosopher and one of the most influential surfers in history and founder of California surf culture, Tom Blake. Described by his biographer Gary Lynch as the obvious link between the ancient South Pacific waterman and the twentieth century Anglo waterman, Blake was born March 8, 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Lane informs us that Blake’s mother died when he was only 11 months old and his father abandoned him when he was still a toddler. He didn’t graduate high school. His marriage lasted less than a year and he had no children. He had very little money. He lived most of his life by himself. Some regarded him as a beach bum. Yet, his simple philosophy radically changed the lives of millions in less than a century. His achievements include: 1922 – set the world swimming record in the ten-mile open 1926 – first person to surf Malibu, along with Sam Reid 1928 – won the first Pacific Coast Surfriding Championship 1928 – invented the hollow paddleboard 1929 – invented the water-proof camera housing 1931 – invented the sailboard 1931 – patented and manufactured the first production surfboard 1932 – won the Catalina Paddleboard Race 1935 – invented the surfboard fin, aka. Skeg or keel 1935 – published his first book solely devoted to surfing, Hawaiian Surfboard (republished in 1983 as Hawaiian Surf Riders) 1937 – produced and patented the first torpedo buoy and rescue ring, both made of “dua-aluminum” 1940’s – behind the first production sailboards 1969 - in Surfing magazine, authored an early draft of Voice of the Atom, a wave-riding-inspired religious philosophy, the core equation of which, Nature = God, he later carved this into a rock in Wisconsin 1982 – published Voice of the Atom Being a leader in physical fitness, natural foods and healthy diet Virtually began the surfing lifestyle as we know it For more on Blake, get a copy of Tom Blake: The Uncommon Journey of a Pioneer Waterman by Gary Lynch or the Tom Blake Scrapbook, both available online at https://shacc.org/ from Croul Publishers in Newport Beach. In our last episode, we talked about Duane the Great Writer, the purveyor of a series of online books and a philosophy that may well have been outright lifted from Eckankar and Paul Twitchell. We left off on the discovery that there is a massive other side to Duane's materials, and that's on YouTube. But it's not published by him. It's the channel of Kelsey Lynne Brown, a writer in her own right and the host of lots and lots of material on Duane. This week we explore the extended Duaneverse, other people in his orbit, and the only whiff of scandal that Dave can trace to them (but a significant one)
In this presentation given at Atheists United, Ross extols the benefits of intellectually consistent cherry picking and details some of the helpful lessons learned from the world of belief, including Scientology, Mormonism, Laughter Yoga and Eckankar.

Reincarnation is the philosophical or religious concept that an aspect of a living being starts a new life in a different physical body or form after each biological death. It is also called rebirth or transmigration, and is a part of the Saṃsāra doctrine of cyclic existence. It is a central tenet of all major Indian religions, namely Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The idea of reincarnation is found in many ancient cultures, and a belief in rebirth/metempsychosis was held by Greek historic figures, such as Pythagoras, Socrates, and Plato. It is also a common belief of various ancient and modern religions such as Spiritism, Theosophy, and Eckankar and is found as well in many tribal societies around the world, in places such as Australia, East Asia, Siberia, and South America. Although the majority of denominations within the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam do not believe that individuals reincarnate, particular groups within these religions do refer to reincarnation; these groups include the mainstream historical and contemporary followers of Kabbalah, the Cathars, Alawites, the Druze, and the Rosicrucians. The historical relations between these sects and the beliefs about reincarnation that were characteristic of Neoplatonism, Orphism, Hermeticism, Manicheanism, and Gnosticism of the Roman era as well as the Indian religions have been the subject of recent scholarly research. Unity Church and its founder Charles Fillmore teach reincarnation. In recent decades, many Europeans and North Americans have developed an interest in reincarnation, and many contemporary works mention it.

From anger to understanding. The second clear message is received. Telling the family. Never stop seeing the human in the human. I am in God’s class trying to understand the lesson being given.
Deciding on the treatments. The tumor is still growing. Learning to surrender deeper and to listen better. I think I have to move. I am grateful and “I am all in.”

In the last episode of the season we discuss religious and spiritual psychedelia. As you know, we have already talked about the Christian psychedelic scene in an earlier episode but here we take a broader perspective and tough upon some other religious and spiritual beliefs as well, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Eckankar. There is plenty of good records with religiously and spiritually themed psychedelia and in this episode we’re listening to some Jesus Rock by Wilson McKinley and Last Call of Shiloh and the more meditative mindset of the Christian community Trees. We also have a listen to the Eckist Michael Dobbins singing about Tarot cards, ESP and UFOs, as well as the Siddhartha of South Bronx - Bobby Callender and the floating mind of the Amazing Grace. Episode 29: Gary begins by discussing his recent participation in the Hay House "I Can Do It" conference in San Diego, and then talks about a new movie he has been interviewed for, called, "Luminous World Views". (Gary also recently did an interview for the Spiritual Cinema Circle with actress Mariel Hemingway!) Gene and Gary get into a discussion regarding the application of the Course's teachings in our everyday lives, and how forgiveness - once it becomes a habit - is actually easier than judging... and a lot more beneficial. Questions for Gary start off with one from a 15 year old listener and Course student, who asks: at what point did Jesus obtain enlightenment? Gary and Gene then also discuss the fact that many younger people are now becoming more interested (and knowledgeable) in terms of spiritual awareness. Next question asks about a quote from Pursah in DU, involving medicines and their role as effects in the perception of bodily healing and/or suffering. Gary's answer includes discussion of the concept that all bodily suffering and illness can be traced back to unconscious guilt resulting from the original belief in separation from God. Final question for this episode deals with other spiritual practices such as Silva Mind Control and Eckankar, and how those teachings compare to A Course in Miracles. Gary's answer also addresses his own previous involvement with EST training, and Gene's earlier experiences with Scientology. Gary and Gene wrap things up with some brief discussion about a new podcast spoof that's recently been posted (hello, Steven!), as well as some comments about the recent Happy Dream Cruise (hello, Martin!)... and then Gary closes out with a reminder of the importance of putting the Holy Spirit in charge of all events at the beginning of every day.
