A Note from James:"In this episode, Tim Collins and I discuss what I believe is a great business idea that could solve the main problems of the world, including student loan debt and possibly even inflation. It's a very interesting concept, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.Additionally, we have a call for participants in this episode. So here we go: the ultimate business idea that solves every problem in the world." Episode Description:In this podcast episode, the hosts discuss a groundbreaking business idea with the potential to solve significant world problems, including student loan debt, debt in general, and possibly inflation. They explore the concept of meme coins, like Dogecoin, and their underlying technology, highlighting their dependency on cultural value while lacking intrinsic utility. The conversation shifts to the innovative use of 'runes' on the Bitcoin blockchain to create more efficient and cost-effective digital currencies. Additionally, they delve into the notion of tokenizing future income as a novel solution to the student loan crisis, suggesting a business model where individuals can sell a percentage of their future earnings. This system could gamify career prospects and provide a more dynamic way of dealing with student debt. The episode concludes with a call to action for participants interested in being part of this pilot project, aiming to test and refine this business idea. Episode Summary Hosts: Winnie Chung, Senior Associate, Corporate Solutions Nicholas Gandolfo, Vice President, Corporate Solutions Growing Innovation with Sustainable Finance Instruments In this episode, Nick and Winnie chat about the latest news and transactions in the sustainable finance space. With a focus on innovation, they discuss the new ways in which issuers are leveraging sustainable finance instruments to fund their green and social projects. For instance, the World Bank's recent bond issuance will forgo investor coupon payments, instead using the funds to finance a project manufacturing water purifiers in Vietnam. Using purifiers will replace biomass burning (traditionally used to boil water to make it safe to drink), resulting in lower carbon emissions. The carbon emissions saved will be turned into carbon credits and sold to fund a coupon payment to bond investors. Nick also notes innovation picking up in the areas of blue bonds and the maritime economy as well as biodiversity-focused finance activities. Investors Swing Back to Use of Proceed Instruments Winnie and Nick also touch on the growing ambivalence towards sustainability-linked instruments. In 2022, sustainability-linked bonds and loans seemed to lose some of their appeal as scrutiny of targets and performance indicators intensified and accusations of greenwashing arose. Adding to the discontent – slipping targets. Analysis from Barclays finds that nine out of 12 SLBs with target measurement dates in 2023 are off track to hit those targets. Consequently, we're seeing a swing back toward traditional use of proceed instruments. This is particularly true within the green bond market which took less of a hit compared to other types of labelled bonds in 2022. With more green bond disclosure guidance and regulations expected from more jurisdictions, such as India, Bolivia, EU and Latin America, investors will likely continue to seek security in the more structured green bond market. Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
This was the seventh session of the day from our Artemis London 2022 conference, held on September 6th, 2022. The event was Artemis' first insurance-linked securities (ILS) conference held in the City of London and saw more than 240 attendees enjoy a wide-range of sessions and networking opportunities. Themed largely around the catastrophe bond, attendees heard from expert speakers that have been in the sector for years, as well as newcomers with ideas of how to innovate the cat bond and ILS market going forwards. Attendees came from as far afield as New Zealand, Hawaii, Asia, North and South America, Bermuda, as well as a large European contingent, plus as you'd expect numerous London marketplace leaders in ILS and reinsurance. This seventh video from the event features a panel discussion around the future evolution of the catastrophe bond marketplace and asks what comes next? The panel discussion was moderated by Guillaume Courtet, Portfolio Manager ILS, Schroders. He was joined by: Adam Bornstein, Lead, Innovative Finance & Systems Change, Danish Red Cross; Brian Kirwan, General Manager, Europe, Vesttoo; and Mike Rich, Head ILS, Commodities & Environmental Strategies, K2 Advisors. The discussion focused on where the panellists feel there is potential for the catastrophe bond and also broader insurance-linked securities (ILS) market to expand its scope. The panellists also discussed potential niche use-cases for catastrophe bonds, including real-world examples of the evolution of the cat bond and ILS structure from their own experiences. Listen to the full audio of this evolution of the catastrophe bond focused panel discussion for more insights into the potential for the ILS market to continue expanding its remit.
Increasingly more companies and governments have come to realize that the global economy must become more sustainable or risk an environmental-related collapse. That was one of the key takeaways from the 2021 Milken Global Institute Conference panel on Investing in a Sustainable Business Transition. The panel featured Dan Barclay, CEO and Group Head at BMO Capital Markets, Jorge Mesquita, CEO, Blue Triton Brands, Hiromichi Mizuno, Special Envoy of U.N. Secretary-General on Innovative Finance and Sustainable Investments – Special Advisor, Milken Institute, Anthony Pratt, Executive Chairman, Visy Industries and Executive Chairman, Pratt Industries, and Shally Shanker, founder and managing partner, AiiM Partners, and was moderated by Milken Institute Senior Director, Innovative Finance, Caitlin MacLean.
COP26 saw announcement after announcement from the financial sector, but we have questions. First off, why the sudden wake-up? What will follow? And, critically, will it be enough to address the climate crisis? Here to help us make sense of the fast-moving developments is Hiro Mizuno, Special Envoy of U.N Secretary-General on Innovative Finance and Sustainable Investments. Hiro shares his deep insights into the financial landscape since the shift towards recognition of the systemic risk posed by the climate crisis. Reaching back to the Industrial Revolution, Hiro talks us through the role of the finance industry in accelerating change. Financial institutions' competitive nature may well drive their transition to net-zero business models and portfolios – but it'll be the next twelve months that prove the worth of the COP26 announcements, Hiro reminds us.

The degree of inequality among businesses is troubling. In most industries that Steve has studied, eighty percent of the economic profit is earned by the top twenty percent of companies. This means that the other eighty percent of companies are just playing to play, working hard to survive but not truly capturing the financial rewards that are possible in business. It doesn’t have to be this way! Organizations that foster strategic financial leadership at all levels empower their people to make real time, data-driven decisions that result in a greater customer experience and higher profitability. In this episode, Steve discusses the concept of strategic financial leadership and how the art of story telling behind the numbers can have a huge impact on the bottom line.Support the show (http://www.stevecoughran.com)

Rehana and I have a wide ranging conversation, but dig in deep on the Case Foundations newest project, the Impact Investing Network Mapp. Fueled with publically available data, it's the first attempt to put all of the data around impact deals into one visual tool. It's a bold new project, currently in the final leg of its open feedback period, after you listen to the podcast, make sure you go check out the map. Play with it, dive into it. What do you love about it, what's missing, and what potential do you see? For me, I'm excited to see where impact deals are happening outside placed like the Valley and New York. Maybe we'll find some unlikely hotspots of impact. I'm also excited to see the definition of an "impact deal" continue to evolve and be solidified. I'm of the firm belief that there are far more "impact" companies out there that "non-impact" - and this map will be a tool to help increase and expand the public awareness of the space.
