Today I'm joined by Flexport, an exciting and innovative software brand that is on a mission to make global trade easy for everyone. Flexport is building the platform for global logistics, empowering buyers, sellers and their logistics partners with the technology and services to grow and innovate. Companies of all sizes – from emerging brands to Fortune 500s – use Flexport technology to move more than $10B worth of merchandise across 112 countries every year. Today Will Urban, Chief Revenue Officer at Flexport, joins me to chat all about the company and what they do; making sustainability a priority; the importance of providing visibility and control in a fragmented industry; and why global trade is a force for good. Guest bio: Will Urban is Chief Revenue Officer at Flexport, where he's responsible for driving go-to-market strategy and maximizing the value Flexport delivers to clients. Will is a 25+ year freight forwarding and logistics industry veteran; prior to Flexport, Will was the Regional Vice President of Northwest USA, Expeditors, one of the largest territories for the company. He oversaw all sales and operations, sponsored Fortune 500 global accounts and led an organization with nearly 1,000 full time employees under his leadership. Will is a licensed U.S. Customs Broker and holds an IATA/FIATA certificate.   IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:   [06.55] The current landscape, and challenges, of global trade; how Flexport are helping their customers to tackle those challenges; and their vision to create a seamless experience in a fragmented industry. “The last 6 months… has shown two things: that our infrastructure in the US is over-taxed, and that visibility is not where it needs to be, when that system is taxed.” [10.19] Flexport's recent leadership changes; and what they mean for the company, and for the industry. “Dave [Clark] is all about scale and using technology to enhance what we're doing, so he's making the bridge between traditional freight forwarder and digital supply chain company.” [14.43] An overview of Flexport, what they do and how they help their customers; their mission to improve the supply chain industry; and what sets them apart. “What's really different is that we think about our competitors as our partners… we want to give our customers the very best experience, visibility and tools to help optimize their supply chain, end-to-end.” [19.00] Flexport's commitment to collaboration; and why harnessing the power of third-party partnerships is the way to better serve customers. “It's invisible to our clients, they don't have to worry about looking at a different system, receiving different reporting or updates in a different manner – it's that consistency that really drives the value.” [23.04] Why Flexport.org was established; how it's making a difference with sustainability and humanitarian work; and why global trade is a force for good. “We can be a very profitable business, and at the same time make a really great impact on the world.” [25.50] Teresa Carlson's appointment as head of Flexport.org, and exactly how her role will increase its positive global impact. [28.20] The importance of sustainability; what Flexport customers are doing, and asking for, when it comes to ESG goals; and how Flexport supports them. [33.19] Flexport Capital: how it has helped to keep small and medium-sized businesses afloat; and the importance of offering a holistic suite of solutions, all under one roof. [38.01] A case study detailing how Flexport helped a client analyze their supply chain to identify key areas to optimize, diversify and reduce cost. [41.15] The future for Flexport. “We're doubling down on technology… to make the platform the most meaningful, easy to use customer-centric supply chain tool.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:   Head over to Flexport's website now to find out more and discover how they could help you too. Cyber attacks have been on the rise since 2020, occurring with increasing frequency and having a more detrimental impact to the companies affected. Cyber risk regularly tops C-level risk rankings as a high priority and short term concern. Almost 20% of all data breaches are associated with third-parties in a company's supply chain. We can see how this plays out by looking at the case of Expeditors International and how a 2022 cyber attack not only impacted them as a company, but it also led to a lawsuit brought by a customer: iRobot. In this week's episode of Dial P for Procurement, host Kelly Barner covers: What happened to Expeditors International of Washington just over a year ago How the cyber attack impacted iRobot's business The options available to companies, like cyber risk insurance and internal safeguards, and how industries may respond when a cyber attack takes down one of their own

Contract automation and building an alternative legal service provider (ALSP) within a law firm is the topic of Episode 52. Eric Baker and Michael Case, transportation attorneys with Frost Brown Todd, talk about their journey founding Transaction Expeditors, an AI enabled contracts automation platform for the transportation industry. Before joining Frost Brown Todd and before launching Transaction Expeditors, both Eric and Mike were in house attorneys. Eric served as GC for transportation and logistics companies SIRVA and CRST. Mike was also in-house doing legal work and running claims for a transportation insurer Protective Insurance. There has been much talk over the last couple of years about the interplay between law firms and alternative legal service providers. Should law firms use them? If so, should the create their own? When Eric and Michael, along with their colleague Stacy Katz, founded Transaction Expeditors, they were not thinking about those questions. They just wanted to create a more efficient contract management solution for their transportation clients. But in the end they created an ALSP within their law firm. Having Eric and Mike on the show also brings the podcast full circle because Transaction Expeditors' technology partner is the AI engine Legal Sifter, a company we had on the show way back on Episode 15 in 2018.
