In the 1970s, a network of radical extremists terrorised the West with plane hijackings and hostage-takings. Among them were the beautiful young Leila Khaled with her jewellery made from grenade rings, the hard-drinking philanderer Carlos the Jackal sporting shades and open-neck shirts, and the radical leftists of the Baader-Meinhof Gang. Taking Israel, capitalism and ‘western imperialism' as targets, they orchestrated spectacularly violent attacks that held governments to ransom and the world gripped to their television screens. In October 2025 one of the foremost writers on terrorism and International Security Correspondent for the Guardian Jason Burke came to the Intelligence Squared stage to uncover the insider stories from the terror attacks which shaped this tumultuous decade. From the Munich Olympics and the raid on Entebbe, to the Iranian Embassy Siege in London and the Beirut bombings of the early 1980s, Burke shed light on the lives and minds of the perpetrators of these attacks, as well as the government agents who sought to thwart and assassinate them, drawing on declassified archive material and original interviews with key actors and witnesses. --- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Seattle's new socialist mayor just called fraud investigators 'extremist influencers' while hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars disappear into ghost Somali daycares. You read that right. Katie Wilson issued a statement defending alleged fraudsters instead of demanding answers about why these 'daycares' have no children, no car seats, and luxury vehicles in the driveways. We're talking $800,000+ per facility with zero kids present. Meanwhile, YouTubers like Nick Shirley, Cam Higby, and Jonathan Cho are doing the actual journalism—knocking on doors, asking questions, and exposing what could be a multi-billion dollar fraud scheme stretching from Minnesota to Washington State. The same pattern seen in the $9 billion Medicaid fraud is now playing out in childcare subsidies, and Seattle's mayor responds with 'I stand with Somali childcare providers.' Are you kidding? When did asking 'where are the children?' become extremism? Why won't officials investigate facilities pulling in taxpayer money with zero accountability? Is this the biggest cover-up in recent Washington history? Drop your thoughts below, hit subscribe, and let's keep exposing government waste together.

In this episode, Katie talks with Clare O'Donoghue Velikić about the shifting landscape of political advertising in Europe—and what's driving those changes. They trace how Brexit, the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and rising public scrutiny of tech platforms set the stage for today's regulatory environment. Clare breaks down the stark differences between U.S. and European campaign practices, the ripple effects of GDPR and data rules, and how policymakers are thinking about political communication in a post-scandal world. They also unpack Meta's recent decision to ban political ads in the EU, exploring why it matters, who it affects, and what transparency risks emerge when legitimate political messaging is pushed out of public view. The conversation offers a grounded look at the future of digital campaigning in Europe—and the tradeoffs ahead as platforms, regulators, and political actors navigate a rapidly changing system.Takeaways* Regulation intended to increase transparency can lead to less transparency.* Europe's political advertising landscape is significantly different from the US.* Data protection laws in Europe limit campaign strategies.* The early days of Facebook were marked by excitement and innovation.* The Cambridge Analytica scandal raised serious concerns about data use in politics.* Building political ad transparency tools was a complex process.* The current political ad ban in Europe poses risks to democratic discourse.* Extremist content may thrive in the absence of regulated political ads.* Finding a compromise between tech companies and regulators is crucial.* The removal of political ads silences moderate voices in social media.Chapters* 00:00 Introduction to Political Advertising in Europe* 03:38 Differences Between US and European Political Campaigning* 06:12 The Early Days of Facebook and Political Campaigning* 08:56 The Impact of Cambridge Analytica and Foreign Interference* 11:14 Building Political Ad Transparency Tools* 13:59 Challenges in Regulating Political Advertising* 16:49 Personal Experiences in Political Campaigning* 19:02 The Role of Data and Privacy in Political Advertising* 25:43 Political Ad Authorization and Campaign Dynamics* 29:29 Challenges of Political Advertising in Europe* 33:08 Meta's Political Ad Transparency Initiatives* 39:05 Impact of New Regulations on Political Advertising* 44:12 The Future of Political Advertising and Social Media* 48:53 The Role of Moderation in Social Discourse* 52:15 The Evolution of Political Advertising on Facebook* 52:44 Challenges of Transparency in Online AdsAnchor Change with Katie Harbath is a reader-supported publication. The Trump administration is deprioritizing domestic terrorism to serve a political agenda, scaling back investigations of far-Right extremism while redirecting DHS agents to immigration crackdowns. As programs tracking domestic extremism are dismantled and January 6 rioters are recast as "patriots," journalists find themselves on the frontlines — and their attackers are now people in power. Jordan Green is an investigative reporter for Raw Story whose coverage on far-Right extremism has spanned from Charlottesville to January 6. He is currently working on a book about militant accelerationism. Green also reported on a story we've covered extensively on the show: the attack on two power stations in Moore County, North Carolina. A correspondent for the Texas Observer, investigative journalist Steven Monacelli has been tracking extremism, disinformation, social movements, and the influence of dark money in politics. He received the The Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award for revealing the identities of far-Right extremists, including government employees. Freelance journalist Amanda Moore embedded with the far Right in 2020 and has faced backlash from far-Right groups for her reporting. Synopsis:  Journalists Investigating Far-Right Extremism Face Growing Threats: As the Trump administration scales back investigations into far-right extremist groups, journalists on the front lines are facing increased attacks and threats from powerful figures.Make a tax deductible YEAR END DONATION and become a member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate. This show is made possible by you! Description: Today's guests have paid a price for their reporting on far Right extremists. But if journalists don't do this critical work, then who will? Her reporting at present focuses on ICE and Border Control, and her work has appeared in the Nation, Politico, and the Intercept. Join us for this chilling conversation on threats against journalists and the implications for democracy, plus a commentary from Laura.Guests:•  Jordan Green: Investigative Journalist, Raw Story•  Steven Monacelli: Freelance Investigative Journalist; Correspondent, The Texas Observer;  publisher of Protean Magazine, a nonprofit literary magazine; co-founder of Apprentice Creative Space•  Amanda Moore: Freelance Investigative Journalist Full Conversation Release: While our weekly shows are edited to time for broadcast on Public TV and community radio, we offer to our members and podcast subscribers the full uncut conversation. Security officials now fear these pupils could be used as human shields to deter a military intervention being threatened by the United States. At the same time, aid is being slashed, and extremist groups and criminal gangs have disrupted food supplies, leaving 35 million people projected to face “severe food insecurity” next year. This week, Arthur and Venetia speak to Chi Lael, Head of Communications for the World Food Programme in Nigeria to get a clearer picture of the crisis.Plus Global Health Reporter Lilia Sebouai explains how tensions have worsened since she visited the area last year. What happens when a political party nominates a candidate in its primary who is ideologically extreme? Do donors, especially those outside the party's base, react — and if so, how? That question is explored in a new paper by Andy Christopher Wayne Myers, Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at Stanford University. He uncovers how donors respond when a relative “moderate” is replaced by a more extreme nominee and if the force of donors is actually weaker than it once was. Olive harvest season has become a flashpoint in the West Bank in recent years as extremist Israeli settlers regularly threaten and physically harm Palestinian harvesters, but this year, “the situation on the ground is out of control,” Anton Goodman of Rabbis for Human Rights said on the Haaretz Podcast. “We have never seen anything like this,” Goodman emphasized, noting that in the past, “We've seen settler attacks, and we've seen unnecessary army aggression and restrictions, but we've never seen such a peak moment of violence affecting so many communities.” Goodman described the situation as a “perfect storm” with “extremists at the heart of the Israeli government, who have sent clear policy recommendations to the police” to refrain from arresting violent settlers so that “the rule of law is totally diminished.” He also outlined the ways in which mainstream Religious Zionist institutions and their leaders are complicit – such as when the prominent rabbi Yaakov Medan encouraged his yeshiva students to spend the High Holidays at outposts that are illegal even under Israeli law. Also on the podcast, Leila Stillman-Utterback recounts her experience as an 18-year-old Jewish American volunteer who was recently arrested at an olive harvest and then deported and banned from Israel for 10 years. While Israel has deported non-Jewish solidarity volunteers for years, Stillman-Utterback’s case is believed to be the first time Israel has deported a Diaspora Jew from the West Bank. Speaking from the United States, Stillman-Utterback said a court challenge to banning her entry to Israel is underway. Maintaining her connection to Israel, she said, is “incredibly important to me, even though I am extremely frustrated with the actions of the Israeli government, both in terms of the impunity for settler violence and their actions in Gaza.” Read more: Erased: Israeli Settlers' Brutal War on Palestinian Communities in the West Bank IDF Reports Surge in West Bank Settler Attacks Against Palestinians, Says Police and Shin Bet Looking Away Amid Political Pressure 'We May Have Reached the Point Where Settlers Try to Kill Jews' Analysis | There Will Be No Middle East Peace if Trump Turns a Blind Eye to Wild Settler Violence in the West Bank Op-ed by Anton Goodman: How Israel's Violent West Bank Settlers Place Minors in the Line of FireSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan exposes how America's shutdown is revealing shocking welfare data, investigates a Socialist-Islamist power alliance in New York City, breaks down the arrest of a radical British speaker, and answers listener questions about his years inside the CIA. Union Revolt and Welfare Shock: The largest federal workers' union — normally a Democrat ally — is now demanding an end to the shutdown, while new data reveals that most U.S. food stamp recipients live in foreign-born households. Bryan explains how this exposes a broken immigration system and a growing dependency crisis, citing research showing that long-term aid actually keeps people poorer. Socialist and Islamist Alliance in New York: Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani leads New York's mayoral race with heavy backing from radical leftist and Muslim groups, including CAIR and Students for Justice in Palestine. Bryan unpacks the money, ideology, and political networks behind Mamdani's rise — and warns what his victory could mean for America's largest city. Trump Deports Radical British Preacher: Federal agents detained British Islamist Sami Hamdi, who was touring the U.S. with CAIR to rally Muslim and leftist activists. Citing post-9/11 counterterror policy, Bryan explains why Trump's DHS acted swiftly to revoke his visa and how Western leaders are finally confronting political Islam's infiltration strategy. Fearlessness and a CIA Life: Bryan closes with a reflection on courage, truth, and the lessons he learned as a CIA officer — from recruitment and fieldwork to his most memorable operation abroad.
